- Chapter 24.1 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Secretly in Love with the Female Lead Omega (21)
“I really want to devour you, Ayan.”
Everyone’s impression of Jiang Mengyu was still stuck on her relentless pursuit of Chu Muyao. So, when they saw Jiang Mengyu now completely ignoring Chu Muyao, they couldn’t help but feel puzzled.
And what about Chi Jingyan? Wasn’t she Jiang Mengyu’s love rival?
Bringing Jiang Mengyu to Class Nine wasn’t she afraid Jiang Mengyu would start pestering Chu Muyao again?
It felt like watching a three-person battlefield unfold before their eyes. Their gazes kept darting between the three, afraid they might miss even the slightest bit of drama.
But in reality, nothing happened.
Neither Chi Jingyan nor Chu Muyao were the type to argue and embarrass themselves in front of others, and Jiang Mengyu had no interest in putting on a show for the crowd. So in the end, silence settled among the three.
Coincidentally, a student from Class Nine had taken a leave of absence a couple of days prior, leaving an empty seat. Jiang Mengyu moved her desk to the vacant spot. Her deskmate happened to be another Alpha, the class’s academic monitor, Chen He’an.
Chen He’an wore large black-framed glasses, her hair tied into a ponytail at the back of her head. Her expression seemed stern, and her attitude toward Jiang Mengyu was neither warm nor cold.
Jiang Mengyu noticed that while most people had been watching the spectacle earlier, Chen He’an hadn’t even looked up. She appeared completely uninterested in any gossip, merely giving Jiang Mengyu a brief glance before burying herself in her test papers again.
Jiang Mengyu liked people like this quiet and uncomplicated. She settled in and began organizing her things. Before long, someone walked in from outside the classroom and said to her, “Jiang Mengyu, the teacher wants you to go to the office to collect your textbooks.”
It was the class president.
Jiang Mengyu glanced back at Chi Jingyan, who remained seated without moving, not even lifting her eyes to look at her. So she nodded at the class president and got up to leave the classroom.
Only after Jiang Mengyu left did the atmosphere in the classroom liven up a little.
Someone who was relatively close to Chi Jingyan seized the opportunity to sidle up and ask, “Sis Chi, what’s going on here? Jiang Mengyu, she…”
“It was all a misunderstanding before,” Chi Jingyan lowered her eyelids. “Don’t bring it up again.”
The questioner fell silent. Since Chi Jingyan, the victim in this situation wasn’t making a fuss about it, naturally, no one else had any right to comment.
But while the drugging incident could barely be called a misunderstanding, what about Jiang Mengyu’s relentless pursuit of Chu Muyao?
Did Chi Jingyan not care about that anymore?
Unconsciously, everyone’s eyes turned toward Chu Muyao again.
Chu Muyao had already returned to her seat, her back facing Chi Jingyan. Even knowing the other girl was watching her, she didn’t turn around.
The tense atmosphere lingered until Jiang Mengyu returned with her new textbooks, the homeroom teacher following behind her.
The first period was the homeroom teacher’s class. Before starting the lesson, she introduced Jiang Mengyu to everyone. Regardless of what people were thinking internally, at least on the surface, no one showed it, the applause was reasonably warm.
Jiang Mengyu kept a low profile. None of the scenarios everyone had imagined came to pass. For the entire morning, she simply listened quietly and did her assignments, never once bothering Chu Muyao again as if she had truly turned over a new leaf.
The system only required Jiang Mengyu to obtain her graduation certificate, but she didn’t slack off. It had been several years since she graduated from high school, and she had nearly forgotten much of the knowledge. However, after reviewing the textbooks all morning, she managed to recall most of it.
As the class neared its end, Jiang Mengyu got stuck on a problem. She tried solving it several times without success and was about to switch methods when a quiet female voice suddenly spoke beside her: “Wrong.”
It was Chen He’an.
Seeing Jiang Mengyu look up at her, Chen He’an’s expression remained unchanged. “Your approach is fine, but you miscalculated the numbers.” She lightly tapped Jiang Mengyu’s test paper twice with her fingertip. Jiang Mengyu quickly reworked the problem in her head and realized Chen He’an was right, she had substituted the wrong values.
“Thanks, Class Rep.” Since the other girl had kindly pointed it out, Jiang Mengyu didn’t ignore her.
“No problem.” Chen He’an had no ulterior motives; she simply noticed Jiang Mengyu’s earnest attitude toward studying.
She had heard that Jiang Mengyu used to have good grades. If she hadn’t lost focus later on, she wouldn’t have been expelled. Now that Jiang Mengyu seemed to be turning over a new leaf, Chen He’an didn’t mind helping her after all, they were going to be desk mates from now on.
Not that she did much, just pointed out the mistake. After speaking, Chen He’an left.
Jiang Mengyu lowered her head to continue working on the problem, but unexpectedly, a shadow fell over her desk. She looked up to find Chi Jingyan standing in front of her.
Instinctively, Jiang Mengyu glanced toward the door and spotted Chu Muyao standing not far away, quietly watching them clearly waiting for Chi Jingyan.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t put down her pen. “Aren’t you going to eat?”
Chi Jingyan frowned. What kind of tone was that? But since Chu Muyao was waiting, she didn’t comment. Instead, she placed her meal card on Jiang Mengyu’s desk. “I’m leaving first.” After a pause, she added, “No need to follow me.”
“I know,” Jiang Mengyu replied softly.
She watched as Chi Jingyan walked away with Chu Muyao. The Alpha was nearly half a head taller than the Omega, tilting her head slightly as she listened attentively to the other girl’s words. Their figures looked perfectly matched.
“They make a great pair, don’t they?”
Jiang Mengyu turned her gaze to the boy now standing before her, the one who had just spoken. Seeing Jiang Mengyu silently staring at him, the boy smirked mockingly. “Jiang Mengyu, I don’t know what sweet talk you used to bewitch Chi Jingyan, but a low-tier Alpha like you, with no family background, what right do you have to covet the moon in the sky?”
Jiang Mengyu hadn’t expected to encounter such a cliché scene. Wasn’t being provoked by brainless cannon fodder usually the protagonist’s role? She felt nothing inside, so her expression remained indifferent. Casually, she asked, “Are you jealous?”
Though the boy’s words were scornful, the envy in his eyes was unmistakable. Jiang Mengyu wasn’t sure whether the “moon in the sky” he referred to was Chi Jingyan or Chu Muyao, but it didn’t matter.
She quickly averted her eyes and returned to her test paper. Finishing this problem was far more important than arguing with someone.
Jiang Mengyu was feeling a bit hungry and planned to grab a meal after finishing this problem.
The boy hadn’t expected Jiang Mengyu’s reaction to be so calm. He had assumed she would either be crushed or angrily argue with him. He had even prepared how to make her recognize her place, but to his surprise, Jiang Mengyu simply ignored him.
“You!”
Furious, he reached out to snatch Jiang Mengyu’s test paper.
Only then did Jiang Mengyu’s expression turn cold. With a flick of her wrist, a flash of silver glinted at her fingertips.
“Ah!!”
The boy cried out in pain, his eyes widening as he yanked his hand back. Looking down, he saw a fresh cut on his previously smooth fingertip, blood steadily seeping out.
In Jiang Mengyu’s hand, a small silver knife had appeared at some point.
“Jiang Mengyu!” The boy glared at her, his eyes a mix of shock and fury.
Jiang Mengyu had actually held back, she could have sliced off his finger. Frowning, she said, “Get lost.”
The boy’s chest heaved with anger, but wary of the knife in Jiang Mengyu’s hand, he didn’t dare make another move.
Was Jiang Mengyu insane? She actually hurt someone at school!
“I won’t let this go!” he gritted out through clenched teeth.
This wasn’t the first time Jiang Mengyu had been threatened. Chi Jingyan had even shot at her multiple times, and yet here she was, still sitting unharmed.
“Suit yourself,” she murmured, lowering her gaze to the blood on the knife, her brow furrowing slightly.
Dirty.
After wiping the blade clean and putting it away, Jiang Mengyu returned to her test.
She didn’t know who the boy had gone to tattle to, but Chi Jingyan found out about the incident quickly.
Just as Jiang Mengyu stepped out of the cafeteria after lunch, she received a message from Chi Jingyan, just two short words:
[Come here.]
An address followed.
Jiang Mengyu followed the directions and arrived at what turned out to be an art studio. Chi Jingyan was sitting by the window, scrolling through her phone. At the sound of the door, she looked up at Jiang Mengyu.
“Close the door.”
Jiang Mengyu shut the door behind her and walked toward Chi Jingyan. As she got closer, she noticed a small bag of cookies on the table in front of Chi Jingyan homemade, by the looks of it.
The bag was slightly open, and a faint milky sweetness lingered in the air.
Considering Chi Jingyan had left earlier with Chu Muyao, it wasn’t hard to guess who had given her the cookies.
Chi Jingyan set down her phone. In her hand, she twirled a craft knife, its sharp blade spinning deftly around her fingers like an obedient pet, never once cutting her.
“First day back at school, and you’re already causing trouble?” Chi Jingyan’s expression was unreadable as she watched Jiang Mengyu.
“I gave you that thing for self-defense.”
Not for hurting classmates.
Jiang Mengyu was silent for a few seconds. “He started it.”
Chi Jingyan clearly already knew the full story. She arched a brow. “He wasn’t wrong.”
Except for one thing, Jiang Mengyu wasn’t the B-rank Alpha everyone assumed she was.
But for now, only Chi Jingyan knew that. Even Chu Muyao was in the dark.
Jiang Mengyu fell quiet again. After a long pause, she asked softly, “So, are you going to make me apologize to him?”
Chi Jingyan fell silent. If she had wanted Jiang Mengyu to apologize, she wouldn’t have called her here in the first place.
Jiang Mengyu had gone too far, but that was only because that boy had run his mouth first. No matter what, the people under Chi Jingyan’s wing weren’t to be disciplined by others.
But Chi Jingyan didn’t voice these thoughts. She merely gave Jiang Mengyu a deep, lingering look before deflecting the topic. “Getting along well with your new deskmate?”
So she had indeed seen Chen He’an explaining the problem to Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu replied, “The class rep is decent.”
At the very least, Chen He’an didn’t look at her through tinted glasses like the others did.
A faint smirk tugged at Chi Jingyan’s lips, though the emotion in her eyes remained cold. “You admire her?”
Her irritation was inexplicable. After all, Jiang Mengyu and Chen He’an had only exchanged a few words. In contrast, the dynamic between Chi Jingyan and Chu Muyao was far more ambiguous, they shared lunches and snacks in empty classrooms.
Jiang Mengyu stared silently at the bag of cookies on the table.
Chi Jingyan followed her gaze and pressed her lips together. “Don’t forget why you were allowed back in school.”
Her tone carried a warning. “Focus on your responsibilities. Don’t waste your attention on irrelevant people.”
The words were blunt, as if Jiang Mengyu were nothing more than her possession someone who shouldn’t have independent thoughts, only eyes for Chi Jingyan and obedience to her commands.
Jiang Mengyu’s voice was quiet. “Understood.”
Seeing Jiang Mengyu’s submissive demeanor, the restlessness in Chi Jingyan’s chest finally eased.
Of course, she knew there was nothing between Jiang Mengyu and Chen He’an. But for some reason, Chi Jingyan was irrationally annoyed especially after hearing Jiang Mengyu praise Chen He’an.
She exhaled slowly, recalling how Chu Muyao had asked her earlier in this very room why she had brought Jiang Mengyu back to school.
Why?
Because unpredictable elements were best kept under close watch. It was better to have Jiang Mengyu where she could see her, rather than letting her stir up trouble behind her back.
To Chi Jingyan, Jiang Mengyu was like a rabid dog prone to losing control at any moment, yet willing to leash herself and hand the other end of that leash to Chi Jingyan.
And Chi Jingyan wasn’t opposed to the idea of taming this mad dog.
She tossed aside the craft knife in her hand, stood up, and brushed nonexistent dust from her sleeves. “Alright, let’s head back to class.”
As she spoke, she grabbed the bag of cookies from the table and threw it into Jiang Mengyu’s arms.
“Hold this for me.”
She was always like this, first making Jiang Mengyu prepare gifts for others, now tossing someone else’s homemade cookies at her.
If she treated Jiang Mengyu this way, fine. But she didn’t even seem to care about Chu Muyao’s efforts.
Watching Chi Jingyan’s retreating figure, Jiang Mengyu’s eyes darkened with contemplation.
Just as she was lost in thought, Chi Jingyan suddenly turned back, impatience lacing her voice. “Are you coming or not?”
Jiang Mengyu followed.
They walked single-file toward the classroom building. Just before reaching the door, Chi Jingyan halted and glanced back, about to say something only to find Jiang Mengyu’s hands empty.
“Where are my cookies?” Chi Jingyan narrowed her eyes.
“Threw it away.” Jiang Mengyu’s tone was calm.
There wasn’t the slightest hint of deception in her words.
Chi Jingyan’s expression tightened, displeasure flashing in her eyes. “I told you to hold onto it, not to throw it away.”
Jiang Mengyu met Chi Jingyan’s gaze steadily, her expression unchanging. “I’m your personal bodyguard. It’s my duty to protect your safety.”
Food safety counted too.
Chi Jingyan took a deep breath. “Muyao made it herself. How could there be any problem?”
Jiang Mengyu was clearly doing this on purpose!
Jiang Mengyu curled her lips slightly. “That glass of wine last time was also handed to you personally by Chu Muyao.”
And what happened? Chi Jingyan still ended up having her sensitive period triggered early after drinking it.
Chu Muyao wasn’t some antidote, who knew if the things she gave were safe?
Chi Jingyan was furious. Of course, she knew Jiang Mengyu was simply trying to stop her from accepting anything from Chu Muyao. But what Jiang Mengyu said was also undeniably true, leaving Chi Jingyan with no room to argue.
