- Chapter 2 - Counterattack (2)
“If you come, I’ll let him go.”
Tang An was missing.
It wasn’t until ten minutes before the wedding was supposed to begin that the Tang family realized something was wrong.
“How could a perfectly fine person just disappear?!”
Tang An’s father suppressed his voice, roaring in anger.
Like his son, he was arrogant, convinced that with the tight security tonight, no one could have possibly abducted Tang An. It was more likely that Tang An had left on his own.
Considering his son’s flirtatious nature, Tang An’s father felt a flicker of uncertainty could Tang An have had a change of heart?
He glanced toward the dressing room, recalling how resolute his son had been about marrying Xiao Chan, and dismissed the thought.
It probably wasn’t cold feet but then, where had he gone?
“Find him now!!” Tang An’s father bellowed.
At first, everyone tacitly agreed to keep Xiao Chan in the dark. But when the scheduled wedding time came and went, and no one came to fetch her, even a fool would have grown suspicious.
“Tang An is missing?!”
After a fit of rage, someone finally told her the truth.
Xiao Chan’s eyes widened in disbelief, tears slowly welling up.
“What does this mean? Does he not want to marry me anymore?”
Tang An’s father quickly explained, “No, Xiao Chan, it’s just that something urgent came up at the company. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure Tang An returns immediately!”
But Xiao Chan wasn’t convinced. In a burst of anger, she tore off her veil. “Uncle, there’s no need to lie to me. If Tang An doesn’t want to marry me, then so be it.”
Despite her words, she remained seated, unmoving. Only after being coaxed by those around her did she reluctantly agree to wait a little longer.
Time ticked by. Over an hour had passed since the scheduled ceremony, and the guests grew restless, murmuring among themselves.
Yet Tang An was nowhere to be seen.
By now, even Tang An’s father began to entertain grim possibilities but he didn’t call the police.
For a conglomerate like theirs, involving the police was a last resort. Over the years, the company had inevitably been involved in some shady dealings. Calling the police now would only invite unwanted scrutiny.
Suppressing his unease, Tang An’s father ordered another thorough search, demanding that Tang An be found at all costs.
The Tang family sat together in tense silence. Even Xiao Chan had emerged, leaning against Tang An’s mother as silent tears rolled down her cheeks.
Amid the suffocating atmosphere, someone’s phone suddenly rang.
Xiao Chan wiped her tears and realized everyone was staring at her.
She reached for the vibrating phone beside her, an unfamiliar number flashing on the screen.
Just as she was about to decline the call, Tang An’s father fixed her with a piercing gaze. “Answer it!”
Xiao Chan froze, a suspicion forming in her mind. If something had really happened to Tang An, the caller might very well be targeting her.
She pressed accept and switched the call to speakerphone.
Silence.
No one spoke on the other end, the quiet stretching unnervingly long.
Xiao Chan swallowed hard. Under Tang An’s father’s urging gaze, she finally spoke. “Who… who is this?”
A cold chuckle came through the line.
The voice was unmistakable. Xiao Chan’s heart clenched as she blurted out, “Jiang Mengyu!”
“Congratulations, you’re right.” Jiang Mengyu’s voice dripped with mock praise. “Here’s your reward.”
Xiao Chan barely had time to ponder what reward Jiang Mengyu was referring to when, in the next second, she heard a strange sound from the other end, something like a squelch, followed immediately by Tang An’s blood-curdling scream.
“Ah!!!”
The shrill cry startled the entire Tang family, quickly giving way to overwhelming worry and fury.
“Jiang Mengyu!” Tang An’s father roared, both shocked and enraged. “You have Tang An with you?”
He threatened, “You should know the consequences of crossing the Tang family. Even now, do you still refuse to see reason?”
His answer came in the form of another agonized scream from Tang An.
“Ahhh! It hurts so much!!!”
Accompanying the cries was Jiang Mengyu’s soft, amused tone. “I don’t like what you’re saying.”
Her voice was lazy, tinged with an odd sense of regret. “Since I can’t reach you, I’ll just have to give your son a few more cuts.”
“Jiang Mengyu!” Tang An’s father was so furious he nearly passed out.
“You!”
Before he could finish, Tang An’s tortured scream cut him off again.
“Ah!! Stop talking!! Don’t provoke her!!”
Jiang Mengyu was insane! She really dared to stab him with a knife!!
At this point, the Tang family didn’t dare act rashly. No one had expected Jiang Mengyu to be so ruthless.
How could she have the audacity?!
…
Tang An wanted to know the same thing.
How could Jiang Mengyu dare to do this?
Right now, Tang An was bound tightly to a chair, hands and feet tied behind him so securely he could barely twitch a finger. A black cloth covered his eyes, leaving him unable to see his surroundings. The place felt eerily silent likely just him and Jiang Mengyu.
That madwoman Jiang Mengyu! She had actually kidnapped him!!
Hatred burned so fiercely in Tang An’s chest it felt like his blood was boiling.
He refused to believe Jiang Mengyu could have pulled this off alone. Someone must have betrayed him!!
Who was it?!
Tang An’s face darkened with rage. Once he got out of here, he would make sure that person paid dearly!!
The excruciating pain from the wound on his leg made him gasp for breath. Even now, he still couldn’t believe Jiang Mengyu would truly harm him.
But the silence around him was suffocating, broken only by the sound of his own ragged breathing.
Where was Jiang Mengyu right now?
She stood right in front of him, looking down at the man who had once carried himself with such arrogance in her presence. Now, he was pitifully bound to the chair like a stray dog.
Tang An’s tailored suit had long been stripped off and tossed aside like rotten cabbage. His custom-made shirt, unique in fabric and design, was now crumpled and torn, with several large gashes on the sleeves. Warm blood seeped relentlessly from the wounds, soaking the fabric and sticking uncomfortably to his skin.
Blood loss had left Tang An’s face pale, and the blindness only deepened his fear. He had never suffered like this in his life. Right now, he wanted nothing more than to tear Jiang Mengyu apart with his bare hands.
But that was nothing more than a delusion.
Jiang Mengyu held a phone in one hand and toyed with a sharp scalpel in the other. The blade still bore traces of blood, but she paid it no mind, merely studying Tang An with detached amusement.
The place they were currently in was actually an abandoned warehouse, filled with stacks of boxes. It seemed no one had been here for a long time, as a thick layer of dust covered everything, making the already dilapidated space feel even more cramped and suffocating.
The warehouse had no other light source except for a small bulb hanging above Tang An’s head, swaying gently on a long wire, casting flickering shadows on the ground.
Jiang Mengyu’s face was half-hidden in the darkness. She had strikingly beautiful and alluring features deep, expressive phoenix eyes, a delicate upturned nose, and lips in the most naturally lovely shade of pale pink. Her neck was slender, and her figure was perfectly proportioned. The form-fitting, long red halter dress she wore accentuated her long legs and slender waist, making her utterly breathtaking.
This dress had been chosen by Tang An, who had ordered someone to put it on her.
He wanted to sell Jiang Mengyu for a good price, so naturally, he had to dress her up properly.
Yet now, this carefully selected red dress was stained with suspicious wet spots, scattered here and there, mirroring the blood on Jiang Mengyu’s hands.
It was Tang An’s blood.
Jiang Mengyu studied Tang An for a long moment before suddenly tightening her grip on the scalpel and plunging it into his thigh without hesitation. Her movements were swift and ruthless, showing not a trace of fear.
“Ahhh!!” Tang An screamed again in agony.
The Tang family members on the other end of the phone were nearly frantic. “We’ve stopped talking! Why are you still hurting Tang An?!”
“Why aren’t you talking?” Jiang Mengyu’s cheek was splattered with a few drops of blood, and in the flickering light, her face looked as eerie and terrifying as a vengeful ghost.
Her voice was low, but her words sent chills down their spines. “Your silence displeases me.”
“What do you want?” In the end, it was Xiao Chan who couldn’t hold back. “If you hate me, take it out on me. Don’t hurt my husband.”
“Then come here,” Jiang Mengyu said lightly. “Come alone, and I’ll let him go.”
“As long as you come, I’ll release him.”
Xiao Chan froze. She looked up and met the Tang family’s expectant gazes, but her throat felt blocked, and for a long moment, she couldn’t utter a sound.
Silence.
After a pause, Jiang Mengyu let out a mocking laugh. “Seems your love for Tang An isn’t as deep as you claim. Pretty words, but no action.”
Xiao Chan desperately wanted to explain, it wasn’t that she didn’t love Tang An!
She was just… just a little afraid. Given Jiang Mengyu’s ruthlessness, she had even hurt Tang An, she might really kill her.
But to the Tang family, Xiao Chan’s hesitation was proof that she didn’t love Tang An enough.
Tang An’s mother, abandoning her earlier gentleness, pointed at Xiao Chan and shrieked, “My son only targeted Jiang Mengyu because of you! This mess is your fault, you should be the one suffering!”
“Go and bring my son back right now! If anything happens to him, don’t think you’ll get off easy!”
Xiao Chan couldn’t believe this was the same woman who had always doted on her. Instinctively, she touched her belly. “But… I’m pregnant…”
Compared to an unborn grandchild, Tang An’s mother naturally cared more about her son. Her fondness for the grandchild stemmed primarily from it being Tang An’s child, it didn’t mean the grandchild was more important than her own son.
At the critical moment, it was Tang’s father who remained somewhat composed.
He and Tang’s mother played good cop and bad cop, she berated sharply while he pleaded with a sorrowful expression.
“Please, Xiao Chan, you’re the only one who can save Tang An now. You don’t want anything to happen to him, do you?”
Someone nearby immediately turned their phone screen toward Xiao Chan, displaying a line of text: Don’t worry, we’ll have people follow you.
Xiao Chan felt as though she were being roasted over a fire. Of course, she cared about Tang An after all, everything she had now came from him, and he had always treated her well. But she was even more afraid of death, terrified that Jiang Mengyu would kill her to avenge Jiang Wanjing.
Yet whether Xiao Chan was willing or not, in the end, she had no choice but to leave.
Jiang Mengyu was bold, directly revealing the warehouse’s location to them. With Tang An in her hands, she held the ultimate leverage, no one dared act recklessly.
The night grew deeper.
The car wound along the narrow mountain road, the inky-black sky looming overhead like a dangerous hand, toying with them in its grasp.
There were no stars tonight, and even the moon was shrouded by dark clouds. The thick, oppressive darkness carried an ominous air. As the surroundings grew increasingly desolate, Xiao Chan’s fear swelled.
She wanted to back out, but the Tang family wouldn’t grant her that right.
With nothing but terror and dread in her heart, she let the car carry her toward the abandoned warehouse.
Jiang Mengyu was waiting there for her arrival.
