“Were you looking for me?”
“Stand-In Turned True Love” is a highly popular romance novel.
It tells the story of Xiao Chan, a recent college graduate who catches the attention of Tang An, the CEO of Tang Corporation, because she bears a striking resemblance to his unattainable first love. Tang An forcibly takes her as a substitute, but eventually, the stand-in becomes the true love, while the original love fades into insignificance.
Unsurprisingly, Xiao Chan and Tang An are the protagonists of this novel. They overcome numerous obstacles, strive to bridge the distance between them, and ultimately end up together.
The plot’s twists and melodrama leave readers enthralled, while the antagonists provoke such intense hatred that readers gnash their teeth in frustration.
However, as antagonists, they are, of course, no match for the protagonists. Their fates are inevitably tragic and bleak.
And if there’s one character in this novel whose downfall is the most devastating, it’s undoubtedly Jiang Mengyu.
Who is Jiang Mengyu?
She is the second daughter of Jiang Jian, the CEO of Jiang Corporation, born to his ex-wife.
Like every clichéd story, Jiang Jian is a scumbag of a man who rose to success through his wife’s support, only to discard her once he made it big, attempting to rekindle a romance with his first love.
Jiang Mengyu’s biological mother, tormented by her husband’s infidelity and the mistress’s provocations, spiraled into severe depression and ultimately chose to end her own life.
As the saying goes, a stepmother means a stepfather and Jiang Jian was never much of a father to begin with. So, in Jiang Mengyu’s life, the role of a father was nonexistent.
Not only that, she also had to constantly guard against the mockery and schemes of her stepmother.
With no father’s love and no mother by her side, she was fortunate to have an older sister who played both parental roles, raising and caring for her.
According to Jiang Mengyu, her sister was nothing short of perfect.
Gentle in temperament yet exceptional in ability, she co-founded a gaming studio with a few classmates during college. In the years that followed, the studio made waves in the industry like a boulder dropped into a lake, with every game they released becoming a massive hit, leaving competitors trembling in their wake.
A woman of such intelligence and capability should have had a bright and dazzling future, if not for the cruel twists of fate.
Jiang Mengyu’s sister died.
She was stabbed thirty-eight times with a knife and bled to death.
Before she died, her last phone call was to Jiang Mengyu. Unfortunately, she fell into a coma before she could say anything.
Jiang Mengyu lost her mind.
She knew her sister had been in Country M for business negotiations. Later, Tang An called her sister, claiming he had a pair of her earrings and insisting she return to City S to retrieve them personally or he would throw them away.
Those earrings had belonged to Jiang Mengyu’s mother but were later lost. Her sister had blamed herself for it for a long time. No one expected Tang An to have hidden them.
Yes, that’s right, Jiang Mengyu’s sister was the unattainable first love that Tang An, the male lead of “Stand-In Turned True Love,” pined for endlessly.
They had been university classmates, dated for two years, and later parted ways amicably due to irreconcilable differences.
Jiang Mengyu’s sister had long since moved on from Tang An, but no one could have predicted that he would still cling to his lingering feelings for her so much so that he sought out a substitute.
Of course, this was just the average person’s perspective. To Jiang Mengyu, Tang An’s actions were nothing short of despicable and revolting.
When they had broken up, Jiang Mengyu’s sister had given him a chance. Unfortunately, Tang An’s male ego had flared up, he believed a man should never lower his head. In the end, her sister had accumulated enough disappointment to walk away.
If Tang An had truly loved her sister, he should have worked to change himself and earn her forgiveness not sought out a substitute who bore a seventy percent resemblance to her, using this as a way to mourn his first love.
What kind of mourning was this? It was just an excuse to indulge his lust.
Playing the role of a devoted lover while simultaneously keeping a mistress, how hypocritical and disgusting.
Of course, this was ultimately Tang An’s private affair. As long as he didn’t disturb Jiang Mengyu or her sister, she would have simply treated him as if he were already dead.
But he had crossed the line, dragging her sister into his and Xiao Chan’s love story, ultimately costing her sister her life.
So Jiang Mengyu hated Tang An and Xiao Chan with every fiber of her being. She used every means at her disposal to exact ruthless revenge on them. Unfortunately, the two were the author’s beloved protagonists, and Jiang Mengyu, the biggest obstacle to their love, was inevitably destined to fail.
Tang An, the domineering CEO in the novel who held the economic lifeline of the business world, was someone the Jiang Group dared not challenge. To avoid offending him, Jiang Jian, that despicable man even sided with outsiders against his own daughter.
In the novel’s finale, the villain Jiang Mengyu was cold-heartedly sold to Myanmar by Tang An. After enduring the horrors of being trafficked for both her body and organs, she died a miserable death in a garbage heap.
Upon hearing the news, Tang An sighed wistfully and remarked, “She was Wan Jing’s own sister. I never intended to go this far, but her malice was too great, she repeatedly tried to harm Xiao Chan. I had no choice but to uphold justice, even at the cost of family.”
Jiang Mengyu’s sister was named Jiang Wanjing.
The two sisters, one, a cannon-fodder “white moonlight,” appearing when the protagonists’ relationship hit a deadlock, helping Tang An realize his true feelings for Xiao Chan; the other, a cannon-fodder antagonist, constantly creating obstacles that only deepened the protagonists’ bond through adversity.
One could say that Tang An and Xiao Chan’s happy ending owed much to the “enthusiastic assistance” of Jiang Mengyu and Jiang Wanjing.
But all of this had come to an end with Jiang Mengyu’s defeat. In the future, few would likely remember them, leaving Tang An and Xiao Chan to enjoy a blissful and radiant future.
That was how the story was supposed to go.
If Jiang Mengyu, the cannon-fodder character, hadn’t awakened.
Linjiang Grand Hotel, City S.
Today was the day of Tang An and Xiao Chan’s wedding.
In truth, they had already held an engagement ceremony two months prior, but thanks to Jiang Mengyu’s interference, it had ended in disaster.
Naturally, Tang An couldn’t let his beloved wife suffer. After dealing with Jiang Mengyu, he organized an even grander and more lavish wedding banquet than before.
Today, Tang An was the picture of triumph. He was about to marry his true love. After enduring so many hardships with Xiao Chan, they were finally on the cusp of a sweet future.
Thinking about that biggest “obstacle,” Tang An couldn’t help but frown, though he soon let out a long sigh.
Jiang Mengyu should have already been sold to Myanmar by now, right?
Though she wasn’t favored by her biological father, she had been well taken care of by Wanjing. She had never suffered any hardships growing up. Tang An wondered if this spoiled young lady could endure such suffering.
But that was her own fault, who told her to repeatedly oppose him?
At this thought, Tang An couldn’t help but glance up at the moon in the sky, silently murmuring in his heart: Wanjing, don’t blame me for being ruthless.
I just wanted to use you to provoke Xiao Chan a little. I never truly wished for your death. Your death pained me deeply, why should Jiang Mengyu blame all of this on me?
He believed he had done nothing wrong. After hypocritically lamenting for a moment, he immediately pushed the matter aside, his heart now filled with nothing but joy and anticipation for his upcoming marriage to Xiao Chan.
However, Tang An’s triumph didn’t last long. Just one hour before the wedding was set to begin, his phone suddenly rang, a sharp, urgent chime that seemed to hint at something ominous.
Everyone in the hotel was bustling about. Xiao Chan had already been brought over from the old residence and was now changing in the dressing room, waiting for the ceremony to begin so she could make her grand entrance in her most beautiful state.
Tang An was finalizing the wedding procedures with the emcee when the phone rang. A flicker of confusion crossed his face, but the moment he saw the caller’s name, his expression darkened.
He gestured for the emcee to step out. Only when the lounge was empty did he answer the call.
“What is it?” he demanded impatiently.
The person on the other end sounded even more panicked, their voice heavy with ragged breaths. “Boss Tang, something terrible has happened!”
“That person you handed over to us, she’s gone missing!”
“What?!”
Jiang Mengyu was missing?!
Tang An’s heart clenched. Having fought against Jiang Mengyu for so long, he knew all too well her capabilities. If she had escaped now, given her temperament, she would likely reappear to ruin his wedding.
At this thought, a flash of ruthlessness crossed Tang An’s face.
He absolutely would not allow such a thing to happen again!
After hanging up, he immediately called the head of security in charge of the event. However, whether due to being busy or some other reason, the call went unanswered for a long time.
Cursing under his breath, Tang An couldn’t shake his unease, especially considering Jiang Mengyu’s unpredictable nature. He pocketed his phone and hurried downstairs.
The wedding was to take place in another banquet hall. The corridor was relatively empty at the moment. Tang An stopped a passing waiter carrying a tray. “Have you seen Qin Fang?”
Qin Fang was the security captain he had just tried to contact.
Tonight, the Tang family had booked the entire venue. Every guest here was either wealthy or influential, and all the staff had undergone rigorous training, familiarizing themselves with the names of key figures.
“Captain Qin seemed to have gone toward the back garden,” the waiter replied.
Without suspicion, Tang An turned and headed straight for the garden.
He was overly confident after all, this hotel belonged to the Tang Group. In other words, it was his territory. With numerous bodyguards stationed at every entrance, Tang An believed no one could possibly harm him.
He was wary of Jiang Mengyu, but only because he feared she might barge in and cause trouble.
Last time, Xiao Chan had already been quite upset. If Jiang Mengyu were to break in again, Xiao Chan would surely be angry with him once more.
The thought of this made Tang An’s head throb faintly, and a surge of irritation rose in his chest.
Why couldn’t Jiang Mengyu just behave and listen?
He wanted Qin Fang to catch Jiang Mengyu immediately and then arrange for someone to send her off to Myanmar. But since this matter couldn’t be known by too many people, Tang An had no choice but to go find Qin Fang himself.
The wedding was less than an hour away, and most of the guests were already waiting in the banquet hall. Compared to the lively scene up front, the back garden was eerily quiet. Warm-toned lights illuminated the crosswalk, and the crisp tap of leather shoes echoed against the pavement.
“Qin Fang!” Tang An called out, but there was no response.
“Damn it!” he cursed under his breath.
Where the hell had that idiot Qin Fang run off to?
Unable to find him, Tang An decided to turn back. But just as he passed a corner, his foot slipped on something slick on the ground. Moving too quickly to notice, he lost his balance and landed hard on the ground in an undignified heap.
Now he really wanted to swear.
But before Tang An could utter a single curse, a sudden chill ran down his spine. A sense of extreme danger enveloped him, his instincts screaming at him to duck and cover his head.
Yet the assailant was faster.
Something hard pressed against his back. Even through layers of his suit and shirt, Tang An could feel its icy coldness.
“Mr. Tang.” A sticky, sinister female voice whispered in his ear, like the shadow of a reaper’s scythe before the final strike, freezing his heart with dread.
“Long time no see.”
“Were you looking for me?”
