The Cannon Fodder Became the Empire's Beloved Omega - Chapter 29
Gu Yu didn’t say anything, lowering his lashes as he took the rice ball from the chopsticks into his mouth.
He chewed slowly, with a kind of careless laziness that was still elegant. Yu Ruan watched him slowly swallow the food and couldn’t resist giving him another piece.
Gu Yu’s dark blue eyes fixed on him, long lashes fluttering slightly.
Yu Ruan blinked.
Somehow, in this pattern of feeding and eating, he inexplicably recalled the feeling of going to the flowerbed to feed cats in the past.
Although the Alpha before him now appeared noble and unapproachable, that languid demeanor made it easy to imagine him as a large feline that had retracted its claws.
Yu Ruan happily served the young master more glutinous rice balls, secretly feeling the joy of “cloud petting” a cat.
Soon, the plate of snacks was nearly empty.
Just as Yu Ruan was about to give him the last piece, he subconsciously poked the plate only to find it completely empty. Aside from the soybean powder scattered in the brown sugar syrup, not a single rice ball remained, all had ended up in the other’s stomach.
He was instantly stunned.
He had made a large batch of these little desserts, divided into three plates. Each plate had contained about six glutinous rice balls.
That meant Gu Yu had just been force-fed six pieces of sticky rice balls coated in syrup.
Even though Yu Ruan loved sweets, the thought of that quantity made him feel it was a bit too much.
Feeling embarrassed, he quickly poured a glass of lemon tea and handed it to Gu Yu. “If you can’t eat anymore, you don’t have to force yourself.”
Gu Yu lowered his head. “I wasn’t forcing myself.”
“?”
“It was delicious,” he said indifferently, biting the straw. “Thank you for the treat.”
Hearing this, Yu Ruan breathed a sigh of relief.
He had been worried that his actions might have made the other feel overwhelmed. Starcloud University didn’t allow pets, and if he lost even the joy of imaginary petting, it would be truly disheartening.
Just then, Yu Ruan suddenly felt two pairs of eyes filled with complex emotions staring at him from afar.
He instinctively looked over and met the gazes of Cheng Mu and Han Ran. Cheng Mu looked as if his jaw had nearly dropped, while Han Ran’s expression was complicated.
Both were staring intently at the empty plate in his hand, lost in thought.
Yu Ruan: “…!”
Oh no, had they discovered his secret daydreaming?
Yu Ruan’s face instantly flushed bright red.
He immediately tossed the empty plate into the sink, grabbed another plate, and set it in front of the two. “Would you like to try some?”
Cheng Mu glanced at him, then at Gu Yu, who was casually wiping the corner of his mouth in the distance, and couldn’t help muttering under his breath, “I feel like a giant third wheel, shining brightly and radiating heat.”
Han Ran kicked him hard under the table. “Shut up.”
Cheng Mu: “…”
Han Ran pulled the plate closer and gave Yu Ruan a reassuring smile. “Thank you. Don’t just keep busy come sit down and join us.”
Yu Ruan nodded and pulled out a chair.
Even so, he was still worried that the others might notice something amiss. So, he kept his head down while eating, cautiously stealing glances at Gu Yu from the corner of his eye.
The other person bit the straw and slowly finished the lemon tea he had handed over. A moment later, they suddenly lifted their gaze, catching Yu Ruan off guard as their eyes met.
Yu Ruan: “Help me, QAQ.”
He really didn’t want to count how many times he had been caught red-handed today.
He was so embarrassed he wished he could find a crack in the ground to crawl into.
Noticing the flushed face of the person he had embarrassed, Gu Yu blinked, and the gloom that had hung over him all afternoon inexplicably lifted a little.
Placing the glass in the sink, he walked over to the four-person table and took the last remaining seat.
Cheng Mu immediately wore an expression of utter disbelief.
Gu Yu pretended not to notice. As if it were his first time joining the group, he properly took a set of utensils, sat down, and began to eat.
Dinner proceeded in an extremely awkward atmosphere until the very end.
Yu Ruan kept his eyes fixed straight ahead, focusing intently on the food in front of him. He tried to hypnotize himself into thinking he was a quail as long as he had thick enough skin, none of the earlier incidents had anything to do with him.
Whether the quail tactic actually worked or not, Gu Yu indeed didn’t bring up the matter again afterward.
Yu Ruan finally breathed a sigh of relief.
After dinner, Han Ran proactively stood up and shooed Yu Ruan out of the kitchen, even though he had intended to help clean up with everyone else.
Her reasoning was sound: since he had already taken on most of the dinner preparations, there was no way they would let him handle the cleanup chores as well.
Cheng Mu agreed with her. So the two of them worked together to escort Yu Ruan out of the dining area, leaving him and Gu Yu standing outside the restaurant at the same time.
When Yu Ruan was pushed out, he was still in a daze. Glancing at the indifferent Gu Yu beside him, the embarrassment of being caught red-handed surged up once again.
After hesitating for a moment, he asked, “Well, shall we head back together?”
“Mm.”
The two walked to the elevator, rode it up to the residential floor, and headed toward their respective rooms. The faint chirping of insects from the garden drifted into their ears, making the night feel especially tranquil.
Stopping in front of his door, Yu Ruan hesitated for a moment before turning back. “Um!”
Gu Yu glanced sideways, giving him a questioning look.
“About what happened earlier.” Yu Ruan felt his face burning so hot it might as well have been on fire, and he could only lower his head in shame. “I didn’t mean to, I hope you don’t mind.”
“What thing?”
“…?”
“Which specific incident?”
Yu Ruan paused for a second, suddenly realizing that Gu Yu might have misunderstood.
He had been agonizing over whether he had been caught, but from Gu Yu’s perspective, perhaps the other only remembered the earlier incident where he had fed him something.
Instantly, the little figure in Yu Ruan’s heart that had been kneeling in apology straightened up with newfound confidence.
He immediately shook his head, smoothly adapting to the other’s train of thought. “Next time, if you can’t finish something, you have to tell me. I was really worried you’d find it too rich earlier that thing was pretty sweet, after all.”
Gu Yu didn’t respond. His dark blue eyes fixed on Yu Ruan, and he suddenly leaned forward slightly.
The other was quite tall, nearly half a head taller than him. As he bent down, an overwhelming sense of pressure washed over Yu Ruan.
Startled, Yu Ruan instinctively took a step back.
His back pressed against the door, a cool sensation seeped through from behind. The distance between them closed without restraint, and Yu Ruan nervously watched Gu Yu, fearing that his reckless words would provoke the Alpha to settle the score later.
The faint scent of the other’s pheromones drifted to his nose, and the gland at the nape of his neck gradually warmed. Staring at the face so close to his, he began to fret over how to patch up the lie he had just spun.
A cool finger brushed against his lips. The other lowered his lashes, studying his face intently as if deep in thought.
Yu Ruan froze for a moment. Before he could react, the person in front of him suddenly took a step back and handed him a tissue.
“You’ve got something on your lips. Wipe it off,” he said.
His voice was light, drifting over like the cool night breeze, yet it made Yu Ruan’s face flush instantly, turning a deep shade of red.
Song Si stepped out of the shower, irritation written all over his face as he turned on his computer screen.
Getting into Xingyun University should have been a joyous occasion, and being fortunate enough to enter Class A was the cherry on top. Even though he was at the bottom of the class, in a merit-based institution like Xingyun, it was a symbol of his capability.
But an incident a while ago had stripped away all his joy.
Xingyun, known for its strict standards and refusal to pander to the powerful, had actually lowered its standards to admit an Omega student. And this Omega hadn’t even earned their place through academic merit they had been parachuted in through connections!
And to top it off, they had ostentatiously squeezed into the best class for freshmen, Class A.
It was important to note that at Xingyun, classes were divided by ability, with only thirty students per class. As the lowest-ranked student in Class A, Song Si had no choice but to pack his bags and get kicked out.
A happy event had instantly turned into a disaster.
But that wasn’t the end of it. A few days ago, because he had posted a mocking thread about the parachute student on the university forum, his account had been suspended by the moderators for three years.
Three years!!
This meant that the suspended user could no longer post in any section of the university forum except for the appeals section. All the sub-forums on Xingyun University’s official forum were now closed to him, and he could no longer voice any opinions.
It was adding insult to injury.
Though rage was boiling inside him, Song Si, knowing he was in the wrong, obediently wrote a humble appeal. He planned to reclaim his school account first and then deal with the parachute student issue later.
But as soon as he opened his user dashboard, a glaring message jumped out at him. It read in bold letters: Appeal Denied.
Below it was a line of smaller text:
[After review by the moderators, your suspension period has been extended to 3652 days. Remaining time: 3652 days.]
Seeing that line, Song Si nearly fainted from anger.
His lips trembled slightly, and his hand gripping the mouse spasmed as he furrowed his brows in fury.
His roommate, noticing his sudden change in mood, curiously leaned over. “Hey, did you get your account back? Didn’t you say it got suspended?”
Mentioning it only made things worse. Song Si almost slammed the mouse in his hand. Pushing the screen away angrily, he snapped, “No!”
This remark immediately piqued his roommate’s curiosity. Leaning in, he managed to catch a glimpse of the screen before Song Si closed the page, then exclaimed in astonishment, “Holy shit, no way they actually added ten years!”
The moment these words were spoken, they instantly captured the attention of everyone in the dorm. Immediately, everyone turned their heads curiously, directing their gazes toward Song Si’s computer, eager to see what was going on.
