The Black Lotus Omega Always Wraps His Tail Around Me - Chapter 38
Ji Yanwan looked down at the marked section of the script in her hands.
The scene described Fu He’s failed mission. She had drugged Lu Ming’s coffee, but the dose was too weak. As a result, Lu Ming regained consciousness in the middle of the mission.
During their previous interactions, Lu Ming had already begun to sense that something was off about Fu He. This time, she caught her in the act.
Lu Ming saw her girlfriend dressed in black, holding the painting that had once been auctioned for an astronomical price. It was her own painting.
But instead of reacting, Lu Ming chose to close her eyes and pretend to be asleep.
Before shutting her eyes, she quietly said, “Remember to come back for dinner.”
Fu He was supposed to disappear after completing the mission. But she came back. Lu Ming had left the door unlocked for her.
Without saying a word, the two returned to living as if nothing had happened.
This scene focused on the emotional struggle between the two main characters. One was unaware of her growing feelings and remained committed to the mission. The other was deeply in love and silently hurting.
The emotional pull between them had to reach its peak.
Ji Yanwan was nervous. It was her first time acting. But whenever she looked at Fu Suihe’s face, her eyes naturally softened.
She had no issues with the earlier parts of the scene. But each time she got to the moment where Lu Ming discovers Fu He’s betrayal, something always seemed to be missing.
Director Chen Fei shook his head again and again. For a beginner, Ji Yanwan’s performance was already quite good.
Her unrefined delivery gave a sense of sincerity and empathy.
Still, something wasn’t quite right.
Chen Fei called out “Cut” and said, “Yanwan, for now, forget who you really are. Think like Lu Ming. React to Fu He as Lu Ming would.”
Ji Yanwan glanced at the script, then looked up at him.
Chen Fei sighed and said, “There’s no complexity in your expression. When you look at Suihe, all I see is love.”
His words were blunt, and everyone on set already knew about her relationship with Fu Suihe. The teasing started immediately.
Ji Yanwan blushed slightly from the attention.
However, Fu Suihe showed no reaction. She simply frowned and said, “Director, may I try this scene again with the stand-in? I’m not satisfied with how it turned out.”
Ji Yanwan, who had just been quietly pleased with herself, froze. Her smile faded.
She looked at Fu Suihe, who was clearly already in character.
Chen Fei nodded and brought in the stand-in.
The stand-in gave a powerful performance. She portrayed the betrayal, the shock, and the love buried deep within with intense emotion. Fu Suihe’s acting was equally strong. Her guilt when caught, her inner conflict, and the cold decision to carry out the mission came through perfectly.
The emotional tension between them was so real that everyone on set began to get drawn in.
When the scene ended, Chen Fei clapped his hands with satisfaction.
Fu Suihe walked over to the stand-in and reached out her hand. “Thank you. That was a great performance. You were wonderful to work with.”
The stand-in had heard of Fu Suihe before. Being complimented by her made her blush as she shook hands with her.
Everyone around them was still lost in the moment.
Everyone except Ji Yanwan. She sat quietly with a hint of sadness in her expression.
Zhao Mumu, sitting beside her, noticed her disappointment and gently said, “It’s alright, Wanwan. No one is born knowing how to act. You did great. That stand-in has been in the industry for over ten years. She’s very experienced.”
Hearing her comforting words, Ji Yanwan suddenly remembered how Zhao Mumu had stayed with her all night to take care of her. And yet today, she had treated her coldly.
A wave of guilt swept over her. “Thank you, Mumu. I haven’t even thanked you properly for last night.”
Zhao Mumu smiled and replied, “If you really want to thank me, then buy me dinner.”
Her tone was lighthearted, and her request was simple.
Ji Yanwan nodded and agreed.
After the scene, Director Chen Fei looked very pleased. The assistant director came over to inform everyone that the next set was ready.
Chen Fei waved his hand and called everyone to get into position.
The next scene was the first meeting between Lu Ming and Fu He.
Fu He, carrying out her mission, was watching the café where Lu Ming often appeared.
Through her earpiece, her team continued to describe the mission and the features of the target.
Lu Ming, the young artist, was known for her usual outfit of overalls and a beret. So when someone wearing a beret walked into the café, Fu He immediately took action.
Sitting at a nearby table, she picked up her coffee and pretended to make a phone call. Then she stood up and bumped into Lu Ming.
Fu He spilled coffee all over her.
Before Lu Ming could react, Fu He panicked and tried to help her wipe it off. During the moment of contact, Fu He’s earpiece fell out, and music began to play from it.
It was a husky female voice, the voice of Lu Ming’s favorite underground singer.
Hearing the familiar sound, Lu Ming’s eyes lit up. The frustration from being soaked in coffee vanished.
They started chatting about the song and quickly found they had much in common.
As the sky darkened, the two finally parted ways.
After they left, Lu Ming realized that Fu He had left behind an earbud. But they hadn’t exchanged any contact information.
The camera lingered on the single earbud left behind on the table.
“Cut,” Chen Fei called out.
For the first scene of the shoot, Chen Fei had chosen a long, uninterrupted take.
It was a difficult shot. Fu Suihe, with her years of experience, handled it with ease. But Ji Yanwan’s performance surprised even her.
Lu Ming, at this point in the story, was already a mildly successful artist stuck in a creative slump. At first, Chen Fei worried that Ji Yanwan’s features were too sharp for such a gentle role.
But the moment she stepped on set as Lu Ming, he was stunned.
She wore loose denim overalls. Two pencils stuck out of her pocket casually. A khaki beret sat low on her forehead, covering her bangs and casting a shadow over her eyes. From the angle of her lowered head, only her elegant nose bridge and sharp jawline were visible.
With a slow, casual knock of her long fingers on the table, she effortlessly captured the look of an introverted, laid-back artist hiding her emotions beneath the brim of her hat.
Not only was Director Chen Fei impressed, but screenwriter Zhao Mumu was as well.
Through Ji Yanwan’s portrayal, Lu Ming had come to life.
Her acting still showed a bit of inexperience, but that very rawness added something special. It suited the character of Lu Ming, who had social anxiety and emotional trauma from childhood. It felt like a perfect match.
Chen Fei applauded without hiding his excitement, openly acknowledging Ji Yanwan’s growth as an actress.
Finishing the first scene on a cheerful note left Ji Yanwan in high spirits.
She had never acted before, so this moment gave her a strong sense of satisfaction.
As the scene wrapped, Director Chen Fei waved his hand and called it a day.
Originally, he had only planned to rehearse, but unexpectedly they managed to perfect the first shot.
Chen Fei was in a good mood, and the atmosphere on set was just as positive.
As soon as the shoot ended, Ji Yanwan walked over to Fu Suihe, eagerly waiting for her praise.
However, Fu Suihe didn’t respond to her expectant look. Bai Li’s sudden appearance earlier had left her feeling uneasy.
She let Ji Yanwan lead her forward in silence, her mind spinning.
Recently, she had asked Abu to send various gifts to Cheng Qi under the name Ji Hesong. Flowers, chocolates, all sorts of romantic and ambiguous items.
But Cheng Qi hadn’t reacted to anything sent by “Ji Hesong.”
Had she given herself away somehow? Did Abu forget to stay anonymous?
While Ji Yanwan wrapped an arm around her waist, Fu Suihe was still lost in her tangled thoughts.
She brushed the hand away, sounding irritated. “I want to go out for a bit. I’ll be back later.”
Ji Yanwan’s hand paused midair, her expression stunned.
“If you have free time, maybe you should study the script more. Ask the director if you don’t understand something.” Fu Suihe shoved the script into her hands.
Ji Yanwan looked confused and responded in a low voice, “Can’t I ask you?”
Fu Suihe was texting Abu while putting on her shoes. “Just study it yourself for now. Ask me when I get back.”
Ji Yanwan tried to say something else, but the door had already closed behind her.
A quiet sense of disappointment settled in her chest. Since joining the film crew, Fu Suihe had started to feel like a different person.
She was no longer glued to her side.
Thinking back to how Fu Suihe reacted to what happened last night, Ji Yanwan felt uneasy.
She tossed the script aside, grabbed her coat, and walked out alone.
Ji Yanwan rested her chin on her palm as she sat on the rooftop, gazing at the layers of rooftops in the distance.
“Sis, how do you tell the difference between love and just liking someone?” she asked.
Bai Li, sitting beside her, opened a can of beer and took a long sip. “With a kiss.”
“A kiss?” Ji Yanwan repeated the word slowly, trying to process it. “So kissing means it’s love?”
Bai Li replied indifferently, “Then do you love Fu Suihe deeply?”
“Do I?” Ji Yanwan muttered softly.
She wasn’t sure how to describe her feelings. Like last night when she fell into the water, Fu Suihe didn’t find her until the next morning.
Wuzhen wasn’t a large town. Bai Li had managed to find her within half an hour. So why did Fu Suihe search all night?
And Fu Suihe didn’t even seem particularly worried about the accident.
Still, Ji Yanwan felt like she shouldn’t be too critical. She had no experience in relationships. Everything was new to her.
But why did her feelings for Fu Suihe feel so overwhelming?
It was as if someone had planted a seed in her heart. Before she even noticed, it had started growing wildly, taking over her chest with an unstoppable force.
Ji Yanwan took a gulp of beer, then turned her head and asked, “How are the others?”
Bai Li nodded. “They’re alright.”
Ji Yanwan lowered her head after asking and said nothing more.
Bai Li noticed her strange mood and turned to ask, “Did something happen?”
Truthfully, Bai Li didn’t have strong feelings about this Third Miss.
As a child, Ji Yanwan had always been mischievous and treated Ji Mingtao, who returned later, with open hostility. Especially since Ji Mingtao was strict and always clung to Ji Hesong.
Ji Yanwan would constantly pull pranks on Ji Mingtao. Whenever she got caught, Ji Mingtao would beat her up. Then Ji Hesong would come in at the right moment to mediate.
Watching little Ji Yanwan with her tiny limbs flailing around was actually kind of cute.
The three sisters had always had a dynamic. Ji Mingtao played the strict older sister. Ji Hesong acted as the peacemaker.
But once Ji Yanwan hit her rebellious phase, everything changed. She started drinking, gambling, and hanging out with the wrong crowd. Ji Hesong constantly worried about her.
Ji Mingtao quickly became distant, and over the past few years, they often clashed whenever they saw each other.
Eventually, Bai Li was assigned by Ji Mingtao to handle secret operations and spent less time at home. Occasionally, she’d hear Ji Mingtao complain about Ji Yanwan, but nothing more.
Now, looking at the grown Ji Yanwan, Bai Li still saw her as a child.
Ji Yanwan nodded, then shook her head.
She didn’t know how to put it into words. Speaking it out loud would make her feel overly dramatic.
Seeing her struggle, Bai Li sighed and gently patted her head.
“You came here to challenge yourself. If you’re not happy, just go home.”
“You have plenty of choices.”
