- Chapter 45.2 - Imported Shrimp Meat, Fed Mouth-to-Mouth
Yu Xuanji had expected this. She tried to pull her hand away helplessly, but the dragon held on tight. “Oh, let go.”
Cang Lan licked Yu Xuanji’s fingers for a moment before chewing the shrimp with relish. She said with a grin, “Wife’s hand tastes better. I want you to feed me more, ah—”
Seeing her unsatisfied expression, Yu Xuanji peeled a small bowl of shrimp meat, poured some sauce over it, and placed the bowl in front of Cang Lan: “Eat it yourself.”
Cang Lan looked at the bowl of shrimp, then stared at Yu Xuanji’s lips, pleading, “I want my wife to feed me mouth-to-mouth.”
Yu Xuanji helplessly wiped her hands with a damp cloth. Pretending to be cold, she turned her head away and said expressionlessly, “Eat it yourself. You’re not a three-year-old child.”
Cang Lan smirked and rubbed her shoulder against Yu Xuanji’s, nuzzling her chin against her shoulder. “But I just turned three this year. I don’t even know how to use chopsticks. I need my wife to feed me.”
Yu Xuanji kept her face turned away, her gaze cool, but the corners of her lips were uncontrollably curling upward. “Eat it yourself. If you can’t use chopsticks, use your hands.”
Cang Lan turned back dejectedly, looking at the bowl of shrimp meat Yu Xuanji had peeled for her. She took a bite and then flashed a cunning smile.
Yu Xuanji caught a glimpse of the restless dragon from the corner of her eye. Seeing her finally settle down, she breathed a sigh of relief, though her heart felt uneasy. She knew Cang Lan was not one to give up easily.
“Hiss—” A sudden gasp came from Cang Lan. Yu Xuanji didn’t even have time to put down the shrimp in her hand before turning around, only to meet Cang Lan’s mischievous, smiling eyes.
Cang Lan held a large shrimp in her mouth. She pressed a hand to the back of Yu Xuanji’s head and fed the shrimp into her mouth, lip to lip.
“Mmph.” Yu Xuanji let out a muffled hum, covering her mouth with one hand. She hadn’t expected Cang Lan to pull such a move. A faint blush quickly spread across her cheeks as she swallowed the shrimp that had been fed to her.
Cang Lan asked with a grin, “Does my wife like it?”
Seeing red oil on Cang Lan’s face but not a single shell on the table, Yu Xuanji couldn’t help but ask, “What did you use to peel the shells?”
Cang Lan bared her teeth at Yu Xuanji, showing off her pearly whites and two sharp canines. She laughed, “I bit them open with my teeth!”
Yu Xuanji asked further, “And the shells?”
Cang Lan showed off her iron-strong teeth and laughed, “I chewed them all up and swallowed them! From now on, wife eats the meat, and I’ll eat the shells!”
Yu Xuanji nearly pried Cang Lan’s mouth open to make her spit out the shells. “Shells are dirty, hard, and taste terrible. You are not allowed to eat them anymore, do you understand?”
Cang Lan said pitifully, “I understand.” Then she quickly changed the subject: “So, did my wife think the shrimp I fed you was delicious? Answer quickly!”
Yu Xuanji’s face heated up. She nodded. “Imported shrimp meat… it tasted quite good.”
Cang Lan added, “I knew it. Since you like it, how about I continue feeding you like that?”
Yu Xuanji swallowed hard, unsure whether to nod or shake her head. If she nodded, Cang Lan would become unstoppable, perhaps wanting to feed her like that every meal. If she shook her head, Cang Lan would likely “force” her just as she did before.
Looking at the pair of old lovers still reminiscing outside, Yu Xuanji called out to them, “Tushan Bai, Xiuxiu, come in and eat. You can talk after.”
Cang Lan said unhappily, “Why did you call them in?”
Yu Xuanji couldn’t very well say she didn’t want any more “imported shrimp,” so she made up an excuse: “Both Tushan Bai and Xiuxiu worked hard. How can we eat alone?”
Cang Lan thought about it and agreed. She walked outside and pushed the two of them in, pressing down on their shoulders. “Eat quickly. Opportunities like this don’t come twice.”
Yu Xuanji thought to herself, Why does she make it sound like their final meal?
At the table, Cang Lan peeled shrimp for Yu Xuanji while Tushan Bai peeled shrimp for Shen Xiu. The two seemed to be competing to see who could peel faster and better, nearly coming to blows.
By the end, the shrimp meat in front of Yu Xuanji and Shen Xiu was piled up like small mountains.
Rain and Watermelon
As expected, the dragon and the fox eventually started fighting again.
In the Barren Lands, heavy rain poured amidst thunder and lightning. Yu Xuanji sliced the cold watermelon she had taken from the well and arranged the pieces on the stone table in the pavilion. Looking up, she saw two small mountains—one black and one white—clashing in the sky like shifting clouds.
Shen Xiu sat in the pavilion, watching the fight with concern. Just then, a piece of bright red watermelon was offered to her.
Yu Xuanji smiled. “What are you looking at? Eat the watermelon. We’ll eat first and leave the rinds for those two later.”
Shen Xiu looked worried. “Sister Xuanji, I’m worried about them. What if they get hurt?”
Yu Xuanji glanced up and said, “It’s fine. They know what they’re doing. It’s just a spar; they won’t hurt each other.”
Shen Xiu took the watermelon and took a bite, tasting its crisp sweetness. She said in surprise, “Sister Xuanji, I can taste things now.”
Yu Xuanji stroked the top of her head. “It’s good that you can.”
The two finished half a watermelon in silence. The other half was left on the table untouched; Yu Xuanji had saved it for the two troublesome ones.
Shen Xiu stared at her hands and murmured, “Sister Xuanji, how long can I maintain this body?”
Yu Xuanji replied, “Not for long. Your body is made of paper; it will melt if it touches rain. Once this form is completely ruined, I’ll have Lan help you forge a body of mystic iron. What do you think?”
Shen Xiu turned and gave Yu Xuanji a small smile. “Thank you, Sister Xuanji. Thank you for helping me despite the past.”
Yu Xuanji lowered her eyes and said calmly, “It has nothing to do with you; you were just a victim. However, I am curious—why didn’t you reincarnate after you died? Why did you remain in the world as a white bone spirit?”
Shen Xiu sat on the steps, her legs dangling and swaying slowly. She curled her toes and laughed. “I was cursed. Even if I reincarnated, I wouldn’t live past twenty. Tushan Bai was originally a nine-tailed fox; every time she forcibly extended my life, she had to lose a tail and endure heart-piercing pain. I didn’t want to see her like that.”
Yu Xuanji looked at her and said, “So you tricked her into looking for the Elixir of Immortality, then ended your own life while she was away, becoming a wandering ghost just so you could spend another hundred years with her. Am I right?”
Shen Xiu asked in surprise, “Sister Xuanji, how did you know I committed suicide?”
Yu Xuanji placed her palm on the girl’s back. “Those who take their own lives have a soul shackle on their backs. To reincarnate, they must cross the waters of the River of Forgetfulness and endure the pain of soul erosion, followed by the tortures of the eighteen levels of hell. The waters of the river alone have destroyed countless ghosts.”
Shen Xiu was shocked. After a moment of thought, she said, “I lingered by the Bridge of Helplessness for a long time and didn’t cross. I saw many ghosts jumping into the river, including a female ghost in black who seemed familiar.”
Yu Xuanji froze for a moment, then smiled. “Perhaps what you saw wasn’t a ghost.”
Shen Xiu asked in shock, “Can someone enter the Underworld without being a ghost?”
Yu Xuanji nodded. “Indeed. I have descended to the Underworld countless times. Like you, I waited by the Bridge of Helplessness until even Granny Meng got to know me. She invited me to her home, but I never had the chance to go. So, I burned a smartphone for her, taught her how to use it, and even added her as a contact.”
Shen Xiu nearly dropped her jaw. She stammered, “Sister Xuanji… you… you must be joking, right? How is that possible?”
Yu Xuanji winked at Shen Xiu and laughed. “Why shouldn’t it be possible—”
“What are you talking about?” Cang Lan arrived in the courtyard, drenched in sweat. Seeing the cold, bright red watermelon on the table, she waved at the trailing Tushan Bai. “Halftime! Let me eat some watermelon first.”
Tushan Bai didn’t back down and grabbed a piece, sitting next to Shen Xiu and eating in large gulps. “You wicked dragon, this is the watermelon I grew!”
Cang Lan finished her piece in a few bites, not even leaving the rind. she stuck her tongue out at Tushan Bai. “This was sliced by my wife!”
Seeing the two rivals about to fight again, Yu Xuanji stepped in front of Cang Lan, coaxing her with gentle words. “Lan, don’t be impulsive. Peace is precious!”
Cang Lan snorted coldly. Facing Yu Xuanji, she turned into a blooming flower, grinning as she pointed to her lips stained with red watermelon juice. “If my wife kisses me, I won’t be impulsive.”
Seeing this, Tushan Bai refused to be outdone. She pestered Shen Xiu, pointing at her own cheek and saying somewhat awkwardly, “If that stupid dragon gets it, I must have it too.”
