- Chapter 46.1 - Kneeling on a Washboard; The Tail Is Too Thick, It Will Break
The sky had originally been a vast expanse of clear blue until two demonic beasts, one black and one white, appeared, rampaging and brawling across the horizon.
Many small demons, eager for a spectacle, poked their heads out and looked up at the black dragon and white fox, both as massive as high mountains. They couldn’t help but marvel, “Is Tushan Bai trying to usurp the throne?”
Another small demon chimed in, “It looks like it. So, what do we do?”
The first demon looked up at the overwhelming raindrops falling from the sky and said, “What else can we do? It’s raining; time to go home and take in the laundry.”
The little demons, balancing broad tree leaves on their heads, scurried home in groups through the heavy rain.
Yu Xuanji and Shen Xiuxiu sat in a pavilion as the rain began to subside, watching Cang Lan and Tushan Bai fertilizing the flower trees in the courtyard.
Cang Lan looked at the lush, thorny trees and asked in confusion, “It is currently the third month of spring. Why have these trees not yet bloomed?”
Tushan Bai was equally puzzled. “I don’t know why. Ever since I transplanted this flower tree into the yard, I haven’t seen it bloom. I water and fertilize it every day, taking meticulous care of it, yet I haven’t seen a single bud. Perhaps it’s not suited to the soil and doesn’t like the environment of my courtyard.”
Cang Lan knew nothing about gardening. She turned to Yu Xuanji and asked, “My lady is well-informed and knowledgeable. Can you tell why this flower won’t bloom?”
Yu Xuanji approached the thorn-covered plant, observing its leaves and vines. She lightly stroked a large, verdant leaf with her fingertip and shook her head. “I have never seen this species before. However, looking at the leaves, it resembles a type of rose. I wonder what kind of flower it produces.”
The moment she finished speaking, she felt a sharp prick. Yu Xuanji took a sharp breath and pulled her hand back. The index finger that had touched the leaf had been pierced, and a drop of bright red blood slowly welled up.
Seeing this, Cang Lan took Yu Xuanji’s finger and put it in her mouth, slowly sucking and licking the tiny wound.
Upon seeing this, Tushan Bai instinctively began to bare her teeth. She covered Shen Xiuxiu’s eyes, picked her up, and turned to leave.
Only Cang Lan and Yu Xuanji remained in the courtyard. As Cang Lan licked her fingertip, a tickling sensation washed over Yu Xuanji. She curled her finger and tried to pull away, but Cang Lan used her teeth to gently nip the knuckle.
Dragon saliva began to seep into Yu Xuanji’s muscles and blood through the needle-like wound. A wave of heat surged in her lower abdomen, and the corners of her eyes seemed stained with a layer of rouge. She said helplessly, “This small wound doesn’t need licking; it would have been fine in a moment. Tell me, are you doing this on purpose?”
Cang Lan wrapped an arm around Yu Xuanji’s waist and smiled. “My lady asks what she already knows. Even if I am doing it intentionally, what of it? Would my lady truly cast me away?”
Yu Xuanji helplessly poked her forehead, but her gaze was drawn to the back of the plant’s leaves. The plant was covered in thorns, but the leaves themselves were exceptionally smooth—except for a tiny, sharp spine hidden perfectly behind the leaf’s surface.
Yu Xuanji pointed at the leaf and said, “A-Lan, look, there is a thorn.”
Cang Lan simply picked Yu Xuanji up in a horizontal carry and flew toward the side chamber. “Not looking, not looking!”
Yu Xuanji was gently placed on the bed. With a wave of her hand, Cang Lan closed the door and pulled the quilt over them, covering them both completely.
In the darkness, Yu Xuanji’s lips were softly captured. She instinctively wrapped her legs around Cang Lan’s waist, arching her body to press closer.
Opening her eyes to the darkness, Yu Xuanji felt Cang Lan biting her neck and couldn’t help but ask, “Why cover us with the quilt? Don’t you love looking at my face the most?”
Cang Lan made short work of removing Yu Xuanji’s clothes. She pressed against her and whispered playfully, “My lady said we must be low-key outside, especially when we are guests in someone else’s home.”
With her legs clamped around Cang Lan’s waist, Yu Xuanji listened to the wooden bed creaking beneath them and smiled. “Why so cautious today? Are you still the little bad dragon I know?”
Cang Lan held Yu Xuanji’s legs, keeping them, both tightly shrouded in the bedding, leaving not even a head or foot exposed. “Since my lady thinks I am being too reserved, then I shall carry my lady outside.”
With that, Cang Lan hooked her arm around Yu Xuanji’s waist, fished her out from the depths of the quilt, and held her horizontally while wrapped in the blankets.
Seeing this, Yu Xuanji quickly reached out to hug her neck, shaking her head. “I was just saying! You’re not allowed to go out; we’ll be seen.”
Cang Lan had only intended to tease her, but she hadn’t expected her usually proactive lady to actually blush. She smiled and said, “It’s fine. Do not fear, my lady. I have divine power; no demon outside will be able to see us.”
Yu Xuanji’s eyes widened, and she shook her head. “No!”
Cang Lan continued, “How about this then? Let us return to the Dragon Pool. High up in the canopy of the Bodhi tree—what does my lady think of that?”
Yu Xuanji was so shocked she couldn’t say a word. She swallowed hard before being placed back on the bed as Cang Lan pressed down upon her. “I knew my lady was thin-skinned. But sooner or later, you will be willing.”
As evening fell, the nights in the Barren Lands arrived quickly and lingered long. In the dead of night, intermittent, fragmented soft moans and silver-bell-like laughter echoed from the side room.
In the courtyard, a dark fragrance drifted. The plant that had only grown leaves during the day began to sprout dense flower buds along its stems. In the night sky, they quietly bloomed into eerie, crimson flowers.
Late at night, a small grey mouse appeared in the yard seeking food. It sniffed the air, preparing to enter the kitchen to steal Tushan Bai’s grain.
A sharp squeak rang out, and in the blink of an eye, the mouse vanished, leaving only a blur. The blooming red roses grew even more enchanting in color, their scent thick and sweet. As their petals opened, dense, pale yellow filaments silently retracted.
The next morning, Cang Lan was awakened by a cry of surprise.
The two of them had tossed and turned until late the previous night, and Yu Xuanji was still fast asleep. Cang Lan rubbed her eyes, sat up, threw on an outer robe, put on her shoes, and stepped lightly out into the courtyard.
Her eyes were met with a sea of brilliant red, spreading from the base of the wall to the top. The rose bush that hadn’t even had a bud yesterday was now in full, magnificent bloom.
Cang Lan’s eyes widened in stunned silence. “Is this the rose from yesterday? How did it bloom so much overnight? Is it an illusion?”
Tushan Bai shook her head. “I’m not sure. I didn’t use any magic to force the buds. It’s truly strange. Why did it bloom and spread like this overnight? Could it be due to your Dragon Breath?”
Cang Lan remained silent. She turned to see Yu Xuanji emerging from the room in only a thin undergarment. She hurried over and draped her own outer robe over her shoulders. “It’s cold outside; be careful not to catch a chill, my lady.”
Yu Xuanji touched Cang Lan’s wrist and smiled. “Why are you up so early? What happened outside?”
Cang Lan turned her gaze toward the left wall of the courtyard. Yu Xuanji followed her look, her expression freezing slightly. She murmured, “It… bloomed.”
With one arm around Yu Xuanji’s waist, Cang Lan helped her down the steps, whispering, “Slow down, my lady. Don’t tire yourself.”
Tushan Bai stood to the side with her arms crossed, watching the two of them acting all lovey-dovey. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes and grumble, “Looking at this, one would think she’s pregnant. Even if she were, she wouldn’t be this delicate—”
Her words cut off abruptly as several leaves flew through the air, piercing toward Tushan Bai with lightning speed. The sharp edges of the leaves sliced through several strands of her hair, which drifted to the ground.
Tushan Bai caught one of the leaves between two fingers and frowned. “Cang Lan, you shot this? We’ve been neighbors for so many years; why ambush me?”
Cang Lan looked genuinely confused. “Who ambushed you? I haven’t even gone near that rose bush. Besides, this King is not some petty person; do not slander me in front of my lady.”
Tushan Bai took the leaf to the rose bush to compare it and found it was indeed one of its leaves. “That’s not right. If it wasn’t you bullying me, who in these Barren Lands would dare move against me?”
Seeing a battle about to break out, Yu Xuanji stepped in front of Cang Lan. “I believe in A-Lan’s character. I know she would never do such a thing. You have lived near her for many years; you know that while she is mischievous, she does not take lives lightly.”
Cang Lan embraced Yu Xuanji from behind, nuzzling her chin against her neck and cheek. She nodded. “My lady is right. Only my lady understands and supports me, otherwise I would truly be wronged by this stinking fox.”
The statement was thick with feigned innocence. Tushan Bai gnashed her teeth, threw the leaf to the ground, and stood aside indignantly. “Could it be someone is actually trying to assassinate me? But I changed Yu Yaoguang’s fate back yesterday, and I did it right in front of all those demons.”
The rose bush trembled, and bright red petals rustled and fell, moving even without a breeze.
Yu Xuanji’s gaze faltered. She stared at the bush for a moment, then a shallow smile appeared. “Perhaps it is an old enemy seeking revenge. Tu Shan, we should stay inside for a few days. With A-Lan here, nothing will happen to you.”
Cang Lan laughed. “My lady is right. However, since she just accused me of using underhanded tricks, I can’t stay in this fox den any longer. My lady, let’s go back to the Dragon Pool and let her fend for herself.”
Seeing Cang Lan holding Yu Xuanji’s waist and preparing to leave, Tushan Bai hurriedly blocked their path, her face full of apology. “I spoke out of turn! I’ll apologize, alright? Just stay in my fox den for now. That thousand-year-old sandalwood bed—you can shake it however you want, I promise I won’t say another word!”
Cang Lan and Yu Xuanji exchanged a look. Cang Lan smiled. “Since this fox is so hospitable, then my lady and I shall accept.”
During the day, everything returned to normal. Tushan Bai handled the cooking while Shen Xiuxiu assisted at the stove.
Yu Xuanji had wanted to help, but Cang Lan held her back. “My lady, as they say, the guest is king. Since we are guests, there’s no need to do these things. We just need to wait to eat. Besides, you gave that stinking fox the Lingshui Jade the other day—that was my favorite jade.”
Yu Xuanji had never even seen Cang Lan touch that jade, let alone take it out. Where did “favorite” come from? She pulled a ledger out of a drawer and said, “This is the account book Tu Shan gave me. It lists everything you owe her.”
“What!” Cang Lan snatched the ledger, saying in disbelief, “This stinking fox actually recorded every single thing! She even noted down how many bowls and pots I took! She’s truly obsessed with money!”
Yu Xuanji pointed to a page in the middle, pondering, “Breaking her fence: twenty gold coins for repairs. Two hand-forged iron pots: fifteen gold coins each. Has inflation in the Barren Lands become this bad?”
Cang Lan said indignantly, “Exactly! Greedy ghost! Simply unforgivable!”
Yu Xuanji stroked Cang Lan’s hair soothingly. “It’s fine, our family has plenty of money. I saw the gold coins piled up in the Dragon Pool the other day; they were practically overflowing.”
Cang Lan said morosely, “Those are my treasures, and my lady’s treasures. I don’t want to give her any. Giving her a piece of jade was enough. That fox has plenty of treasures hidden away; there’s a natural gold mine right under her den that hasn’t been exhausted in centuries.”
Cang Lan added, “There are gold and silver mines everywhere in these Barren Lands, along with countless gemstone mines. But here, water and food are the most precious things. No demon wants gold or silver.”
Hearing this, Yu Xuanji laughed. “I see. Next time, I’ll use gold to make fun things for you. It’s very malleable; I quite like it.”
Cang Lan immediately said, “Then what is my lady waiting for? I’ll order Huang Liu and the others to send people to mine the gold right away!”
Yu Xuanji pressed her back down by the shoulders. “No need for that yet. We can’t leave for now anyway, so that much gold is useless. Mining gold causes soil erosion, and there’s already so much sand here. What if it causes a disaster?”
Cang Lan didn’t quite understand “soil erosion,” but she listened to whatever her lady said. Whatever the lady said was right.
Thinking of this, Cang Lan asked curiously, “My lady, in your previous world, was gold very important?”
