- Chapter 33.1 - Can't Take It Anymore – A Month-Long Rut
Inside the study, An Zhi and Ting Lan were playing a small game with the Ginseng Baby.
Ting Lan actually quite liked children, but An Zhi couldn’t bring herself to like them at all. Seeing Ting Lan pull out a bundle of red string to tie little braids for the Ginseng Baby, An Zhi leaned against the side, dangling a carrot from her mouth, even though she couldn’t taste anything.
Watching the two of them having so much fun with just a piece of string, An Zhi couldn’t help but say, “It’s just a string; what’s so fun about it?” As she spoke, she lay down in the Ginseng Baby’s little nest and sighed. “The Great Barrens are so boring. Before I came, I thought this place would be like a Western cowboy world—riding horses, hunting for treasure, things like that.”
Hearing this, the Ginseng Baby suddenly had a bright idea and said, “Sister An Zhi, although there are no horses in the Great Barrens, there are plenty of demon beasts! Why don’t you just subdue one to ride for fun?”
An Zhi pinched the Ginseng Baby’s ear and said, “You little brat, listen to yourself—is that human speech? Do I look like I’m tired of living?”
Ting Lan wound the red string up and said, “You’re already dead; where would you get a second life?”
“I was just using a figure of speech.” An Zhi leaned in mysteriously, pulling the Ginseng Baby close. “Ting Lan, listen. We’re stuck here in the Great Barrens anyway; we can’t just live every day in such boredom. How about we go out treasure hunting? Who knows, maybe we’ll find some secret martial arts manuals or something along the way, and the two of us will become number one in the world.”
As the Ginseng Baby listened, she didn’t understand half of what was being said, but she still nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah, Sister Ting Lan, let’s go play! I know many fun places, and there are many lost treasures buried in the sand.”
An Zhi’s eyes lit up. She hugged the Ginseng Baby and gave her chubby cheek a big kiss. “Ginseng darling, Sister An Zhi loves you the most! Can you take Sister to find treasure right now?”
Ting Lan shook her head helplessly and sighed. “Sigh, who was it that just said they hated brats? What was that person’s name again?”
An Zhi kissed the Ginseng Baby again, nuzzling her soft cheek. “I don’t know, never heard of her. Let’s pack our things and go.”
Ting Lan was helpless but followed along anyway.
Seeing An Zhi start packing, Ting Lan leaned against the wall with her arms crossed and said, “We should still discuss this with the Master, so she doesn’t come looking for us and find us gone.”
While packing, An Zhi pulled a strawberry-flavored lollipop out of her bag and put it in the Ginseng Baby’s hand. “Ginseng darling, Sister is giving you a candy. Go tell Xuanji for us that we’re going treasure hunting so she doesn’t worry.”
The Ginseng Baby had never seen such a thing. She stuck out her tongue and licked it; it had no taste, but she still obediently tucked it into the small pocket on her chest. With a giggle, she kissed An Zhi on the cheek and ran out of the cave.
Inside the bedroom, Yu Xuanji was tightly entwined by a vicious dragon that had revealed its original form. Her lips were a congested red, and there was a tiny tear at the corner of her mouth that had mostly healed and scabbed over.
The vicious dragon coiled around Yu Xuanji was still snoring lightly, occasionally rubbing its dragon horns against her neck and chest in its sleep. Not long ago, the two had been in a state of extreme chaos. Yu Xuanji had been pinned down by Cang Lan, unable to move; only her eyes and mouth were free.
Cang Lan had been fine at first, but for some unknown reason, she had suddenly seemed to go berserk. After transforming into her true dragon form, she stopped listening to anything Yu Xuanji said.
In the struggle, the corner of Yu Xuanji’s mouth had been torn. She had to bite the dragon’s tail hard just to barely escape the beast’s shackles.
Looking at the soundly sleeping Cang Lan, Yu Xuanji licked her swollen lips, which were hot and painful. The moment her tongue touched them, they felt numb; she could no longer feel their presence.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. Looking at Cang Lan sleeping so comfortably, Yu Xuanji raised a hand, preparing to slap the dragon’s head to teach her a lesson.
The moment her hand touched the dragon’s head; however, she merely nudged it gently. Her palm pressed down to rub it twice; she still couldn’t bring herself to strike hard.
The Ginseng Baby poked her head in quietly and saw a massive dragon coiled on the bed, its tail draped on the floor. Its body rose and fell like a small mountain; it appeared to be sleeping.
Tiptoeing inside, the Ginseng Baby first hugged the dragon’s tail and nuzzled it, taking the opportunity to absorb a bit of spiritual energy. With a beaming smile, she climbed up along the tail, only to find herself staring straight into Yu Xuanji’s eyes.
Seeing the Ginseng Baby jump in fright, Yu Xuanji smiled and said, “Why are you here?” Currently, except for her head and one arm, the rest of her body was wrapped airtight by Cang Lan. “Is something the matter? I… can’t really move right now. If you’re hungry, go find An Zhi and Ting Lan and have them get you something to eat.”
The Ginseng Baby looked at the sight of the human and dragon entwined with a face full of horror. She backed up a few steps, tumbled to the ground, and stammered, “Xuanji, are you okay? What… what are you doing?”
Yu Xuanji gave a light laugh. “We are… making a dragon baby.”
The Ginseng Baby’s eyes widened, and her jaw nearly hit the floor. “Ma… making a baby?”
Yu Xuanji nodded with difficulty. “Mhm.”
The Ginseng Baby blinked, her expression shifting instantly from shock to joy. She skipped in a circle, dancing with excitement. “Wow! Doesn’t that mean there will be a little dragon soon? That’s great! I want a little dragon to play with me!”
After a moment of excitement, the Ginseng Baby remembered something more important. “Xuanji, I didn’t come here to eat. Sister An Zhi said she’s too bored and wants to go treasure hunting. She told me to tell you.”
Yu Xuanji mused, “There are indeed many treasures in the Great Barrens, but it is also full of danger. There are many ancient great demons hidden here. You must be careful and not offend them.”
Before she could finish her sentence, An Zhi poked her head in with Ting Lan, whispering, “Why has it taken so long to come out? I’ve been waiting so long the flowers have with—”
The massive black dragon coiled around Yu Xuanji slowly opened its giant eyes, staring death at the “invaders” who had entered its territory.
It exhaled a loud, scorching breath, frightening the birds and beasts for a thousand miles around into fleeing.
Ting Lan’s pupils shrank at the sight. She grabbed An Zhi’s wrist to flee, but they were knocked to the ground by a dragon’s roar.
An Zhi and Ting Lan both fell. They struggled to scramble backward, but they were easily suppressed by the dragon’s breath; even their souls were trembling.
At that moment, Yu Xuanji stood before them, reaching out to stroke the black dragon’s icy nose. “A-Lan, it’s me.”
The black dragon was currently somewhat delirious. It only knew that the woman stroking its face carried an extremely familiar scent. It rubbed its cheek against her palm longingly, wishing it could take her into its mouth from head to toe in one breath.
But the black dragon couldn’t bear to, nor did it dare to. Its remaining rationality forced it to slowly settle down, crouching at Yu Xuanji’s feet and lowering its eyes.
Seeing this, Yu Xuanji curled her lips into a smile. She opened her arms to embrace the black dragon’s massive head, her lips gently touching the pair of dragon horns that were as hard and cold as black jade. “Be good, it’s me.”
An Zhi and Ting Lan were so frightened their souls nearly tore apart. They watched as the once-manic black dragon was completely tamed, and they climbed up from the floor with trembling legs.
Yu Xuanji turned her head slightly, her lips moving to mouth the words: “Go, quickly.”
As the two helped each other up to leave, the black dragon suddenly snapped its golden pupils open, staring intently at the intruders with a low growl.
Seeing this, Yu Xuanji hugged it even tighter, constantly stroking its horns and reverse scales. She kissed its nose and cheek, her voice as gentle as water. “A-Lan, it’s me. Don’t be nervous, they aren’t bad people. Behave.”
After soft murmurs for a long while, Yu Xuanji looked back, only to see the two of them sitting on the ground again, unable to move. An Zhi, in particular—her paper-made body wasn’t sturdy to begin with, and this scare had caused her to deflate like a piece of thin paper skin.
Ting Lan managed to get up. She quickly crumpled the paper skin into a ball, grabbed the Ginseng Baby, and fled the scene with the two “burdens.”
Yu Xuanji smiled helplessly. Before she could fully breathe a sigh of relief, the black dragon opened its mouth, clamped onto her waist, and carried her back to the stone bed.
An Zhi carried the two paralyzed burdens out of the cave. As soon as they were out, her legs gave way and she fell to her knees. The Ginseng Baby and the paper ball rolled for a while until they stopped against a Bodhi tree.
The Ginseng Baby wailed in fear, her lips trembling. “Dragon! The dragon is so scary! Was the dragon going to eat us just now?”
Trapped inside the crumpled paper ball, An Zhi struggled to stretch her limbs but found she couldn’t get out. In her desperation, An Zhi’s true form left the vessel, but her soul was still shivering.
The terrifying scene was still fresh in her mind. An Zhi sat limply at the foot of the Bodhi tree and worried, “Master is still inside. That black dragon seems to have lost control. We should go back in and take Master away, otherwise, things look grim.”
Ting Lan shook her head. “We can’t go back. If Master hadn’t stood in front of us just now, the dragon’s breath of a true dragon would have melted our souls.”
An Zhi said anxiously, “But Master…”
Ting Lan said, “It’s impossible for Cang Lan to hurt her; we can rest easy on that. However, let’s put the treasure hunting on hold for now. Your body is ruined; we need to craft a new one.”
An Zhi looked at the paper ball and sighed. “Fine. I’m never using a paper man as a body again.”
The Ginseng Baby giggled. “We can use wood! It’ll definitely be sturdier than paper.”
Ting Lan and the Ginseng Baby worked for most of the day, gathering quite a bit of wood under the Bodhi tree for An Zhi to pick a piece she liked.
