- Chapter 31.1 - The Fertility Pill—"A-Lan, do you want a baby?"
The gale raged outside, and the rain beat down violently upon the tree canopy as if it had gone mad. The leaves of the bodhi tree teetered on the verge of falling, rustling loudly; a few leaves landed on Yu Xuanji’s head and shoulders.
Yu Xuanji crouched before Cang Lan, taking the other into her arms with her cold body. She had rushed over through the violent storm and was soaked from head to toe, droplets of water trickling down from the ends of her wet hair.
Cang Lan was currently drowning in the grief of being a substitute; held by Yu Xuanji, she didn’t even notice that the other’s body was freezing cold.
Icy rainwater mixed with scalding tears, pitter-pattering down and splashing onto Yu Xuanji’s equally cold back of the hand. Her lips were pale. She cupped Cang Lan’s cheeks with both hands, forcing her to lift her head.
Yu Xuanji said, “A-lan, look at me.”
Cang Lan lifted her head, startled by Yu Xuanji’s deathly pale complexion: “Wife!”
Yu Xuanji leaned her body forward slightly, gently blocking Cang Lan’s mouth with her cold lips. She was unwilling to close her eyes, wanting instead to take in every bit of Cang Lan’s panicked expression.
Cang Lan’s face gradually grew hot; she held her breath and dared not move, her body stiffening as she stared wide-eyed at Yu Xuanji. It wasn’t until Yu Xuanji’s tongue-tip probed into the seam of her lips, attempting to pry open her teeth, that Cang Lan snapped back to her senses.
Yu Xuanji’s soft and flexible tongue-tip swept gently across her warm gums, then curled around her slightly protruding, soft labial tubercle, slowly taking it into her mouth and incessantly teasing and sucking on it.
“Mm-nnh! Wife!” Cang Lan gripped Yu Xuanji’s shoulders tightly with both hands. Her mind thought of pushing her away, but in reality, those two arms uncontrollably and quietly wound around the other’s back, pressing Yu Xuanji against herself: “Wife… Wife…”
In the gap of her opening her mouth to speak, Yu Xuanji closed her eyes, and her tongue-tip easily breached Cang Lan’s final line of defense.
Yu Xuanji got her wish, teasing Cang Lan’s tongue with her own. Seeing that the other’s reaction seemed somewhat intense, she smiled and gently licked the roof of her mouth.
With just that light lick, the dragon in her arms cried out in alarm, struggling violently beneath her.
Cang Lan’s scalp felt like it was exploding. Dense, pitch-black scales climbed from her chest up to her neck. Her two eyes were wide open, constantly seeping tears; in a short moment, she had cried herself into a tearful dragon.
Yu Xuanji held her. Having just tasted the saliva in Cang Lan’s mouth—even just that tiny bit—after swallowing it, her entire body began to emit heat.
The water on her body gradually evaporated. Yu Xuanji pressed her forehead against Cang Lan’s, caringly cupping her chin, and asked: “A-lan, come home with me.”
Cang Lan stubbornly refused to go back with her, saying: “Tell me, do you have another dragon in your heart? Otherwise, why is even the sleep-talk you speak related to her? What exactly are you hiding from me?”
Yu Xuanji’s arms tightened around Cang Lan as she explained: “I just had a nightmare. I dreamed that something happened to you, so I… I…”
Cang Lan asked with a sob: “Is it true? Don’t lie to me. I’m actually not easy to fool at all. Don’t think that because I’m silly you can tell me lies. If I find out you lied to me, I will definitely…”
Yu Xuanji kissed Cang Lan’s cheek and earlobe, likewise sobbing as she said: “Fine, whatever you want is fine. As long as you aren’t angry anymore, I’ll do anything.”
Cang Lan brushed her lips against Yu Xuanji’s neck, saying coyly: “I’m not angry. I’m not some small-minded dragon.”
Yu Xuanji couldn’t help but laugh, caught between tears and laughter as she comforted her: “Yes, you are the most magnanimous.”
At the nearby cave entrance, An Zhi and Ting Lan watched the pair of lovers weeping in each other’s arms and sighed slowly.
An Zhi asked, “Do you think they’ve reached a positive outcome now?”
Ting Lan shook her head: “I don’t know. It looks like it, but I feel like the Master doesn’t seem to intend to let her recover her memories. What do you think?”
An Zhi leaned against the cold stone wall, pondering for a moment. She felt this matter was unfair to Yu Xuanji: “But the Master has endured all of this alone in silence. She waited for so many years in loneliness; her life has been too bitter.”
Ting Lan sighed: “This matter has nothing to do with you or me. The Master said to keep an eye on you. Do not reveal any information. If the black dragon asks, just say you don’t know.”
An Zhi frowned: “But… is the Master really content with this?”
Ting Lan said: “This is the Master’s wish. Don’t overthink it. They’re coming back; let’s hurry back to sleep.”
The two vanished from the cave entrance in the blink of an eye. Cang Lan returned carrying Yu Xuanji on her back, her body enveloped in a barrier of pale gold cloud patterns, isolating them from the rain and wind.
Yu Xuanji leaned peacefully against Cang Lan’s back, resting her chin in the crook of her shoulder, her two arms tightly hugging her neck. Yu Xuanji was very familiar with this movement, as if the two had done this intimately many times before.
A drop of tear silently slid down Yu Xuanji’s cheek, landing on the back of Cang Lan’s neck and disappearing deep into her collar.
Yu Xuanji leaned affectionately against the side of Cang Lan’s face and said smilingly: “Alan, how much do you like me?”
Cang Lan didn’t know why Yu Xuanji was suddenly asking this. With a red face, she said: “Naturally, I like you very much. I’ve even let you touch my reverse scale and dragon horns. Is that not enough to show I like you?”
At this moment, Yu Xuanji seemed to have the posture of a young girl. She tightened her hold on Cang Lan’s neck by a few degrees, her palm pressing against the spot where the reverse scale was on her neck. She said with a smile: “A-lan, besides me, has anyone else ever touched your reverse scale?”
Cang Lan shook her head. She hooked her arms under Yu Xuanji’s knees and gave her a couple of upward bounces; the other’s arms hugged even tighter, her body pressing firmly against her back—soft and very comfortable.
Realizing that by bouncing Yu Xuanji like this, the other would hug her tighter, Cang Lan began to play a little trick, stopping to give a couple of bounces every few steps, secretly rejoicing where Yu Xuanji couldn’t see.
After a while, she stopped and said: “Wife, you always ask these questions. I’m telling you, from the day I hatched, no one has ever touched me. Not even the Old Phoenix. If she touched me, I’d bite her. If any other monsters dared to covet my reverse scale, their end would be to be ground to dust.”
Having said that, Cang Lan pondered for a moment and continued: “In this life, I have only you. If a dragon recognizes a partner, they will guard her for a lifetime, never leaving or forsaking her.”
Yu Xuanji asked: “But what if there are birth, aging, illness, and death?”
Cang Lan laughed: “Dragons have a heart-protecting scale. If they encounter someone, they want to spend their life with, they will pluck the heart-protecting scale and give it to her, protecting her peace for all lifetimes. So even for a human, the concept of birth, aging, illness, and death would not exist.”
Yu Xuanji lay prone on Cang Lan’s shoulder, rubbing her ear with her cheek. Before she could speak, she heard Cang Lan say with a look of annoyance: “But Wife, I’ve never seen a heart-protecting scale since I was little. Could it be that the Old Phoenix lied to me and the legend is fake?”
Yu Xuanji smiled: “Perhaps the right time hasn’t come yet. Maybe one day it will come out on its own; there’s no need to rush.”
Cang Lan said regretfully: “But Wife, it doesn’t matter to me whether I have a heart-protecting scale or not, but you…”
Yu Xuanji heard Cang Lan’s words cut off in the middle, as if hesitating. She asked with a smile: “What’s wrong? Are you afraid I’ll age too fast?”
Cang Lan nodded: “Mhm. Didn’t you say so, Wife? A human life is only short a few decades. I see you look to be about twenty-something years old. If we count it as twenty, won’t you… after another few twenty-year periods…”
Yu Xuanji didn’t speak. Cang Lan thought she was secretly grieving and hurriedly comforted her: “But don’t worry, Wife. I won’t let that happen. I want to be with you forever.”
After a long time, Yu Xuanji, lying on her back, slowly spoke: “We will.”
The Wilderness had entered the deep of night, but the world outside was just entering daylight. At the moment of the sun and moon’s rotation, a streak of red light slowly rose from the horizon.
A tall woman dressed in a uniform and wearing a police cap slowly got out of a car, carrying a bag in her hand, and entered a private club in the most prosperous part of the city center.
The group of “rich second-generation” youths who had been sloppily drinking and singing all regained a serious appearance upon seeing the woman enter: “Director Bai.”
Bai Lin placed the bag on the table. After opening it, an image projected by spiritual power slowly rose into the air, showing the footage of unidentified dangerous elements attacking the Demon Management Bureau headquarters.
In the footage, Yu Linlang was imprisoned in the “18th floor” of the Demon Management Bureau, guarded by countless barriers. But in the next second, all the mechanisms and barriers were easily destroyed. The surveillance screen only left a pitch-black figure; from the fleeting profile, the black shadow seemed to be a woman.
The projector turned off. Bai Lin braced both hands on the table and said calmly: “Xuanji is currently trapped in the Wilderness and won’t return to the human realm in the short term. Jin Wu, starting from today, you will take over Xuanji’s position and go to Danxue Mountain to investigate.”
The woman named Jin Wu by Bai Lin nodded and replied, “Understood,” instantly turning into a ball of flame and disappearing into the air.
Danxue Mountain is recorded in the Classic of Mountains and Seas; legend says it is the residence of the divine bird Phoenix. This mountain is hidden outside the three realms and is unreachable by mortals; divine power is required to reach the mountain directly.
After Jin Wu left, Bai Lin closed her handbag and said earnestly: “I hope that this time, the world can be at peace and not cause another disturbance in the three realms.”
Ten thousand miles away, on Danxue Mountain.
The mountain was filled with parasol trees as tall as the sky. In the forest, a woman in black stood with her hands behind her back, her face covered by a pure gold phoenix mask.
Yu Linlang stood behind her, asking in great confusion: “Why did you rescue me? Who exactly are you?”
The black-clad woman slowly turned around, still holding a broken parasol branch in her hand. She gave a light laugh: “That is not important. This Seat rescued you because I need you to find someone for me.”
Yu Linlang asked: “Who?”
The woman in black: “The Phoenix.”
Yu Linlang said in doubt: “Your strength is far above mine; why must you use my hand? And you must be joking—after the Phoenix’s nirvana a thousand years ago, she disappeared from the world. No one has ever seen her.”
The woman in black said: “I was sealed here by her; my true form cannot leave Danxue Mountain. I need you to open the gates of the Wilderness and draw her out.”
Yu Linlang was completely baffled: “Since you are enemies, she would surely stay far away from you. Why would she deliver herself to your door?”
The woman in black said: “Just go and do it. Do not ask about the rest.”
Yu Linlang turned to leave, but a talisman filled with black energy was struck into her back. She knelt on the ground in agony, clutching her neck as her pupils dilated and turned pure black.
The woman in black laughed: “This Seat knows all about your affairs. I also know you are a treacherous and cunning villain. If you fail to complete the task, you will suffer the pain of raging fires consuming your body. Take care of yourself.”
After Yu Linlang left, the woman in black took off the mask and hung it on a branch of the parasol tree. She transformed into an all-black cat, climbed the tree, curled up on a branch, and teased the phoenix mask with her paws.
At the same time, in the Wilderness Oasis, Ming Huang sat on a swing under the parasol tree in the courtyard, swaying back and forth. The friction between her clothes and her chest caused a faint, unignorable sting.
Ming Huang lifted her clothes to look, gritted her teeth, and tapped the swing frame with her finger.
Lu Xuan, in a single layer of black clothing, instantly appeared beside her and said softly: “Master.”
Ming Huang pinched her chin and said: “So you still know I’m your Master. Look at the ‘good’ work you’ve done—no sense of restraint. Fortunately, I am a Phoenix; if it were anyone else…”
Before she finished speaking, Ming Huang froze. She saw that Lu Xuan’s eyes seemed to hold a mist that wouldn’t disperse: “In this life, I only want Master. I only want to make love with Master alone.”
