- Chapter 29.2 - The Miraculous Use of Dragon Saliva — A Sacred Mating Ritual
An Zhi opened her mouth to say something, but Cang Lan flicked a pancake into her bowl. “Here, this one’s for you.”
This pancake hadn’t been fried well; several parts were burnt. An Zhi said indignantly, “Why do I get the ugliest one? And my name isn’t ‘Hey,’ it’s An Zhi!”
Cang Lan propped her chin on her hand. “I don’t care what you’re called. Eat it or don’t, I don’t care.”
The Ginseng Baby held her tiny bowl, looking at Cang Lan with eyes full of anticipation. “Dragon-Dragon, me, me, me! What about mine?”
Cang Lan looked at the short-legged fat radish at her feet and gave her a scrap from her own pancake. “There, that’s yours.”
The Ginseng Baby sat happily on her small stool and started eating the pancake with her hands.
An Zhi couldn’t take it anymore and whispered, “Stingy, miser, petty ghost.”
Yu Xuanji, sitting beside her, shot her a cold look, and she immediately shut her mouth, not daring to say another word.
Although An Zhi and Ting Lan were half-ghost immortals, they were not living people. Their way of eating was the same as ghosts; they could see the “qi” that living people couldn’t. With a gentle inhale, they could draw the essence from the food to fill their stomachs.
Cang Lan chewed on a carrot pancake and asked curiously, “How did you two die?”
The question sounded a bit offensive, but An Zhi and Ting Lan had been ghosts for so many years and had never been reincarnated; they had been asked this countless times.
An Zhi took off the white silk scarf around her neck, revealing a bloody ligature mark. “I’m a hanged ghost.”
Cang Lan frowned and turned to Ting Lan. “And you?”
Ting Lan said, “I’m a water ghost. That year, a natural disaster struck, and floods raged. My parents abandoned me and ran. I couldn’t escape in time and drowned.”
An Zhi finished inhaling the last bit of food-qi and said, “My stepfather sold me to a landlord to be a concubine to pay off a debt. I hid a hemp rope on the way to the wedding and hanged myself in the bridal sedan chair.”
Silence fell over the table. Only the Ginseng Baby remained innocent and simple-minded, asking foolishly, “Then why weren’t you reincarnated?”
Ting Lan looked at Yu Xuanji and said, “After we died, we became vengeful spirits. Later, we were subdued by a master who purged our resentment, and we have wandered this world ever since.”
Cang Lan’s gaze also landed on Yu Xuanji. She propped up her chin with an expression of pride. “So Wife is that powerful.”
Yu Xuanji’s lips curled. “It wasn’t me. I’m just an ordinary person; how could I have such profound cultivation?”
Ting Lan glanced at Yu Xuanji again. Realizing she had said too much, she pressed her lips together tightly and stared down at the tasteless carrot pancake in front of her.
After eating, An Zhi and Ting Lan took the initiative to wash the dishes. Cang Lan stretched, chased the Ginseng Baby out, and asked with a shy face, “Wife, you said earlier that my… thing made you look radiant. Does it really have such a miraculous effect?”
Yu Xuanji laughed. “Would I lie to you? Although I was exhausted at first, upon waking up, it felt as though I had been reborn.”
Cang Lan’s cheeks were burning. She felt too embarrassed to speak; she wanted to tell Yu Xuanji to stop, yet her heart wanted to keep listening.
Yu Xuanji added, “Just a little bit had such a powerful effect. If it all went inside…”
Cang Lan buried her face in her hands and wailed, “Wife, please don’t say anymore!”
Yu Xuanji rested her chin on one hand and used the other to stroke Cang Lan’s fingertips, slowly moving from her fingers to her wrist and forearm. She couldn’t help but laugh. “What’s there to be shy about? You wanted to run before we even finished last night. Do you still find it hard to accept me?”
Cang Lan shook her head violently. “I don’t!”
Yu Xuanji drew a heart on the back of Cang Lan’s hand with her fingertip and said with a smile, “Then tonight…”
The end of her sentence was soft and thin, her voice rising slightly at the finish. It made Cang Lan’s heart leap and bound in her chest. She wished she could pick Yu Xuanji up right now and jump into the cold pond for a sacred mating ritual.
But a dragon’s estrus period was very long; she had to endure for a while longer until Yu Xuanji’s health was fully restored.
If she suddenly lost control and transformed into a giant dragon, she couldn’t bear the thought of Yu Xuanji getting hurt.
Seeing that Cang Lan seemed to be spacing out, Yu Xuanji gently pinched the back of her hand and asked with a smile, “A-Lan, what are you thinking about?”
Cang Lan shifted her gaze guiltily. “N-nothing…”
Yu Xuanji pressed, “Really nothing?”
Cang Lan shook her head. “Really nothing!”
The two red patches on her face already gave her away. Yu Xuanji had guessed what was on her mind. However, this little jealous dragon was thin-skinned; if she pushed any further, the dragon might jump into the cold pond and never come out.
A few days ago, the Golden Eagle had helped pull up an entire acre of carrots. All the carrots were piled in the cave, preserved by Cang Lan’s spiritual energy so they wouldn’t shrivel. They were as crisp and sweet as if they had just been pulled from the ground.
Cang Lan loved carrots and enjoyed raw cabbage; she wasn’t picky about meat or vegetables. Over the years, she had swallowed many great demons in the Great Desolation, but she had never tasted them and didn’t know that food could be cooked into delicacies.
Yu Xuanji stared at her with a beaming smile. Cang Lan felt uncomfortable being watched; she scratched the obsidian-like scales tightly arranged on her wrist and vanished in the blink of an eye right before Yu Xuanji.
Cang Lan arrived at the field. She took off her outer robe and tied it around her waist, pulling her jet-black hair back. She transformed her long spear into a hoe and began digging holes to plant vegetables.
A dragon’s energy was infinite and inexhaustible. She wasn’t a war-mongering Dragon King now; she couldn’t fight or bully other monsters in front of Yu Xuanji.
With no other outlet for her energy, Cang Lan could only use farming to sweat more, hoping to clear Yu Xuanji from her mind.
Cang Lan possessed immense strength and worked quickly and accurately. Before the sun had set, she had hoed an entire acre, sown the seeds, and finished watering.
It wasn’t dark yet, and Cang Lan hadn’t broken a sweat. She decided to take over a few more mountain peaks to plant potatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots, just to show Yu Xuanji how capable she was.
A dragon as strong, smart, capable, and loving as her—you couldn’t find a second one even if you searched with a lantern. Yu Xuanji must be head-over-heels in love with her by now.
At this thought, Cang Lan let out a “he-he” laugh. She hugged her hoe and kissed it twice, preparing to pull the cabbage from another field.
An Zhi and Ting Lan stood quietly under a Bodhi tree not far away. Their gaze shifted from Cang Lan to Yu Xuanji’s back.
Ting Lan thought Cang Lan was as cute as an innocent child, but An Zhi hesitated. “Master, look at her… one moment she’s frowning, the next she’s grinning, and she’s kissing a hoe. Could there be something… wrong up here?”
As An Zhi spoke, she pointed a finger at her own temple.
Yu Xuanji didn’t speak. Her eyes remained fixed on Cang Lan, who was bending over to pull cabbage, and her lips curled into a smile.
After a moment, Yu Xuanji asked, “Why did you come to the Great Desolation? I told you before not to disturb me unless there was something major. Did Bai Lin send you?”
Ting Lan said, “Director Bai said that Lin Lang has broken her seal and escaped. Her whereabouts are currently unknown. He hopes you can help, Master.”
Yu Xuanji’s brow furrowed slightly. Her finger lightly tapped the stone table. “One can only enter the Great Desolation, not leave. I have long planned to spend my life here with A-Lan. As for the Investigation Bureau… Bai Lin has so many people under him, yet they couldn’t even keep watch over one Yu Linlang. A bunch of useless trash.”
An Zhi said, “What if she comes looking for revenge? What if she harms you, Master?”
Yu Xuanji looked at the lines on her palm and said nonchalantly, “Then… let her die once more.”
Ting Lan was about to speak when she saw Cang Lan glance toward them. The dragon’s work became even faster and more efficient.
Yu Xuanji’s lips curled. “For the time being, stay by my side. If Yu Linlang truly comes for revenge, she will find a way to track me down.”
After An Zhi and Ting Lan left, Yu Xuanji stood up and walked toward Cang Lan, who was planting rice in the field. She had just reached the edge and was lifting her skirt to step in when Cang Lan rushed over and swept her up into a princess carry.
Cang Lan’s hands were filthy. Afraid of dirtying Yu Xuanji’s clothes, she refrained from touching her directly. “Wife, what are you doing here? It rained yesterday, and the paddy field is very muddy. Your shoes will get ruined if you step in.”
Yu Xuanji looped her arms around Cang Lan’s neck and kissed the corner of her mouth, laughing softly. “You’re working too hard. I am your wife; naturally, I should share your burdens. I want to plant with you.”
Cang Lan swallowed hard. She stiffened her neck and secretly licked the spot Yu Xuanji had just kissed with the tip of her tongue, only to be caught red-handed.
Yu Xuanji’s voice was soft and enchanting as she spoke into Cang Lan’s ear. She let out two soft chuckles and asked, “A-Lan, do you like it when I kiss you like this?”
Cang Lan pressed her lips together, her eyes darting around. Flushed with shame, she stammered, “Wife, this… in broad daylight, if someone sees us, how could we…”
Just as she finished speaking, a dense flock of crows flew overhead. Seeing them spoil her moment, Cang Lan chased them away in a fit of rage.
Cang Lan fumed, “Those damn crows are so annoying! Ugly, with terrible voices, and they’re a bunch of gossips. They spread rumors in the Great Desolation all day long. I’m going to knock them all down and turn them into roasted birds!”
Yu Xuanji held Cang Lan’s slender neck, her nose rubbing against the dragon’s nose and cheek, feeling like soft feathers brushing against her—itchy and pleasant.
Cang Lan kept swallowing, taking a few steps back.
Yu Xuanji’s palm rested on the back of Cang Lan’s neck, lightly pressing and massaging it. She smiled. “What’s wrong? You don’t want me to kiss you?”
Cang Lan shook her head violently. She squeezed her eyes shut and puckered her lips toward Yu Xuanji, seeking a kiss.
Looking at the nervous, contorted expression of the silly dragon, Yu Xuanji laughed helplessly. It was just a kiss, not drinking poison or going to the gallows—why was she so terrified?
Before their lips could even touch, Cang Lan took a step back, slipped, and fell backward. Holding Yu Xuanji, they both tumbled into the mud.
Cang Lan lay there motionless, soaked in muddy water. Yu Xuanji sat on her abdomen, her lower half partially stained. She steadied herself and stood up, looking at the mud-covered Cang Lan with a mix of disdain and heartache. “A-Lan, are you okay? Let me pull you up.”
Cang Lan rolled around in the mud, refusing to let Yu Xuanji touch her. She was like a slippery loach covered in slime, impossible to fish out.
Yu Xuanji grabbed her back collar and said, “Stop fooling around. Get up and come back with me. Wash up and change your clothes.”
Cang Lan turned into a limp noodle. She covered her face with both claws to hide from Yu Xuanji and thrashed around in the air, throwing fits of crying and shouting, splashing mud all over Yu Xuanji’s face.
“So embarrassing for a dragon!”
