- Chapter 15 - More Grievance than Dou E — This Child… Whose Is It?
While Yu Xuanji was fast asleep, Cang Lan had originally planned to slip out quietly for a walk. However, Yu Xuanji held her so tightly that she couldn’t break free at all, leaving her with no choice but to sleep in the other’s embrace.
Cang Lan’s heartbeat was deafening. She arched her body, keeping her chest away from Yu Xuanji, terrified that the sound of her heart might wake her.
Yet, Yu Xuanji loved nestling in her arms while sleeping; her head rested against Cang Lan’s chest, her ear pressed exactly over the spot where her heart beat.
Cang Lan moved back only slightly, but Yu Xuanji seemed to sense it even in her dreams, instantly tightening her grip around Cang Lan’s waist. When they first started sleeping together, they hadn’t been this familiar, and Yu Xuanji would have to feel around for a long time before finding her; now, it was almost second nature.
Taking advantage of Yu Xuanji’s deep sleep, Cang Lan reached out and felt for the small white jade medicine bottle at the head of the bed. Shaking it and finding it empty, she gently plucked off a dragon scale, transforming it into her own likeness to perform a deceptive switch.
Seeing that Yu Xuanji noticed nothing, Cang Lan stood on her tiptoes and crept stealthily toward the secret chamber on the other side of the cave.
Inside the secret chamber was a world of its own. After walking several hundred paces, the space suddenly opened up.
This hidden paradise was filled with countless Ganoderma and celestial herbs, all of which Cang Lan had sent her subordinates to find from various parts of the Barren Lands.
Cang Lan was a True Dragon with abundant spiritual energy. Any celestial herb touched by her aura would grow exceptionally lush. There were even many small Ganoderma and ginseng spirits that had gained sentience, transforming into human forms, capable of speaking human tongues and performing human tasks.
However, Cang Lan did not like coming here, because these pesky “little dumplings” loved to swarm her, clinging to her waist, arms, and legs. Some bolder ones would even jump up to hug her neck or sit directly on her head.
As expected, the moment one of her feet stepped inside, the air was filled with chirping laughter. She could even hear several sprites joyfully shouting, “Long-long is here! Long-long is here!”
Cang Lan pinched the bridge of her nose hard, starting to regret leaving her clone with Yu Xuanji. She should have sent the clone out to pick the celestial herbs for her.
A chubby little ginseng baby was the first to rush forward, shouting in a soft, milky voice, “It really is Long-long! Everyone, get her!”
Taking advantage of the little dumplings’ distraction, Cang Lan flew up into the massive, towering Fusang tree. Sitting on a branch, she watched the group of plump little dumplings jumping up but unable to reach her, a faint smile curling on her lips.
These little sprites didn’t have much cultivation; they could only fly a few dozen meters in the air, nowhere near the height where Cang Lan was perched.
Among the ingredients for the Dragon Blood Pill that Yu Xuanji took, a certain type of ginseng was the most important. Cang Lan narrowed her eyes slightly, instantly locking onto the ginseng baby that had rushed forward first.
The ginseng baby had no idea it had been targeted and was still craning its neck looking for the Black Dragon King’s shadow. In the next second, a giant dragon descended from the sky, extending a sharp claw to snatch the chubby little dumpling with white hair and white eyebrows.
The sound of wailing echoed in her ears. Cang Lan looked down and saw that the little dumpling had been frightened to tears.
Cang Lan gave a sly smile. “This King provides you with so much spiritual energy daily; it’s time you gave something back, isn’t it?”
The ginseng baby wailed loudly, pleading for mercy, “Uwahhhh! Great King, I was wrong! Please don’t eat me!”
Cang Lan continued to intimidate it. “Who told you to grow so fair and chubby? Out of all the ginseng, you are the fattest and most delicious. You must have absorbed the most of my spiritual energy. If I don’t catch you, who should I catch?”
The ginseng baby shook with fear, its lips trembling. Originally rosy-lipped and white-toothed, it turned pale from Cang Lan’s threats, its brow furrowed and eyes tightly shut, looking as if it had aged several hundred years.
After bringing the ginseng baby out of the cave, Cang Lan tightly covered its mouth to prevent it from making a sound. The little ginseng made muffled noises through its nose, and with a plip-plop, two large tears fell onto the back of Cang Lan’s hand.
Cang Lan gave it a “shh,” tucked it under her arm with one hand, and transformed into a black whirlwind, racing through the ink-like night.
By the time she reached Ming Huang’s residence, the horizon was beginning to pale.
Lu Xuan was drawing water in the courtyard. From a distance, she saw a black dragon flying toward them, seemingly clutching a terrified child in its claws.
After Cang Lan landed, she held the ginseng baby by the scruff of its neck, dangling it before Lu Xuan’s eyes, and said, “Is the Old Phoenix awake? I’ve brought the medicinal ingredients. This is a ginseng that has taken human form; using it as a medicinal catalyst will surely enhance the potency.”
The ginseng baby screamed in terror, the noise waking the disheveled Ming Huang inside the bedroom. Looking closely, she saw a wicked dragon bullying the weak.
Standing beside Ming Huang, Lu Xuan whispered in her ear, “This wicked dragon is becoming more lawless by the day. She’s scared this little monster so much its hair and eyebrows have turned white.”
Ming Huang couldn’t help but chuckle. “Ginseng babies are supposed to look like that—white hair, white eyebrows, and white skin. Even the blood they bleed is white.”
Seeing Cang Lan scaring the ginseng baby into screeching and shouting things like “Don’t eat me,” Ming Huang knew the wicked dragon had been threatening it again.
Ming Huang reached out, took the ginseng baby into her arms, and wiped the tears from its face with her sleeve, comforting it softly, “There, there, don’t be afraid. With me here, she won’t eat you.”
The ginseng baby began to cry with snot and tears, burying its face in Ming Huang’s chest. This made Lu Xuan fume with anger, glaring intensely at the little dumpling that was milking its cuteness. A moment ago, she thought it was pitiful; now she wanted to kick it to the next mountain—or let the wicked dragon eat it.
Cang Lan followed Ming Huang into her alchemy room. As usual, she pricked her fingertip to draw blood, handing it to Ming Huang to be refined into pearl-like pills.
As the ginseng baby was being held by Ming Huang, Cang Lan watched as Ming Huang took out a pair of scissors and snipped off a lock of the baby’s snow-white hair.
Cang Lan asked curiously, “Just a lock of hair? I thought you were going to throw the whole thing into the furnace.”
Hearing this, the ginseng baby was on the verge of tears again, clinging tightly to Ming Huang’s arm, begging her not to kill it.
Ming Huang comforted it gently, “Don’t be afraid. We only need your hair. The things this little dragon just said were only to tease you.”
Cang Lan stood to the side with her arms crossed, huffing, “Who’s a little dragon? This King has lived for thousands of years. Where exactly am I ‘little’?”
Ming Huang chuckled. “Fine, fine. Just get through your estrus period first before talking.”
The Dragon Blood Pills required nine days to refine. Before leaving, Cang Lan picked up the ginseng baby as she went. Just as she was about to transform into a dragon, Ming Huang called out to her from behind.
Ming Huang asked, “A-Lan, do you truly intend to become her companion and never part in this lifetime?”
Cang Lan froze for a moment, bit her lower lip, and said, “I have never cherished anyone so much. She is different from everyone else, including you. When she is happy, I am happy; when she is suffering, I suffer with her. Old Phoenix, I feel like I can no longer live without her.”
Ming Huang smiled faintly and said, “Good. As long as I have those words from you, it is enough.”
On her way back, Cang Lan carefully recalled Ming Huang’s words, feeling more and more that the Old Phoenix was definitely up to something. She was always so mysterious, constantly saying things like “Heaven’s secrets must not be revealed,” which really annoyed Cang Lan’s impatient nature.
The ginseng baby sobbed quietly all the way back. It sniffed, biting its lower lip hard to keep the tears from falling.
Cang Lan brought it back to the Dragon Pool. She didn’t dare enter through the main entrance, so she took a detour and crawled through a hole in the back mountain. A flash of white light appeared before her eyes, and the moment Cang Lan looked up again, she came face-to-face with Yu Xuanji, who was reading a storybook in the study.
Cang Lan: “…”
Great. She took the wrong path.
Cang Lan hurriedly hid the ginseng baby she was dangling behind her back, but Yu Xuanji’s gaze had already swept over, her face showing confusion. “A-Lan, weren’t you in bed? Why are you here?”
The moment the ginseng baby saw Yu Xuanji, it broke free from Cang Lan’s grip and jumped into her arms, hugging her neck and wailing loudly, hiccupping between sobs.
Holding this milky baby who looked less than two years old, Yu Xuanji’s lips gradually lost their color. She stared unblinkingly at Cang Lan. “A-Lan… whose child is this?”
