- Chapter 16 - Jealousy — "Am I Not Your Most Beloved Little Sweetheart?"
The chubby ginseng baby, realizing it had found a protector, wrapped its two thick, short, lotus-root-like arms around Yu Xuanji’s neck, clutching her tightly and refusing to let go.
Cang Lan stared at it fiercely and said, “What are you crying for! Get down this instant! You’re not allowed to hug my lady!”
Yu Xuanji supported the milk-baby’s bottom with one hand while patting its back and stroking its head with the other. She asked in confusion, “A-Lan, whose child is this? Where did you get her from? Looking at how hard she’s crying, she must be lost; her parents must be worried sick.”
With one hand on her hip, Cang Lan’s head throbbed from the noisy wailing of this little sprite. The moment she took a step forward, the milk-baby shrieked and cried as if she had seen a malevolent, terrifying ghost.
As Yu Xuanji gently patted the baby’s back and used her sleeve to wipe the tears from the corners of its eyes, Cang Lan’s teeth itched with irritation; the more she watched, the more bitter she felt.
She hadn’t expected this little sprite to learn how to play the pity card. She, the dignified Great Black Dragon King, was not someone that Lu Xuan—that little calico cat—could compare to. Lu Xuan might swallow her pride and remain silent, but Cang Lan was not to be provoked. She was determined to scare this loathsome ginseng out of its wits so it wouldn’t dare approach Yu Xuanji again.
Grinding her teeth, Cang Lan explained, “This is a ginseng I raised. After absorbing my spiritual energy for a long time, it eventually transformed into the form of a child. I caught her today to use as a medicinal primer to refine those little pills you eat every day.”
Holding the milk-baby, whose sobs were gradually weakening, Yu Xuanji gave a helpless smile. “But she has already taken human form. Using her as a medicinal primer… I’m afraid…”
Cang Lan stared at her own sharp dragon claws. Right in front of the milk-baby, she sharpened her claws against the hard rocks of the cave and smirked. “Humph, it’s precisely because she has a human form that the medicinal potency is strongest. Eating one of her is worth ten-thousand-year-old ginsengs.”
The moment the words fell, Yu Xuanji felt the milk-baby in her arms trembling all over. She chuckled and said, “Alright, A-Lan, she’s just a child. She can’t handle your intimidation.”
Cang Lan couldn’t help but say, “She absorbed so much of my spiritual energy for nothing and grew so white and chubby. Doesn’t she know how to write the word ‘gratitude’? Don’t be fooled by the fact that she looks like a child; if you count her cultivation time, she’s already several hundred years old. For her to make you coax her like this is truly shameless!”
Yu Xuanji stood up holding the ginseng baby, swaying her gently in a soothing motion. She freed one hand to tug at Cang Lan’s sleeve and said with a smile, “A-Lan, for my sake, don’t be angry with her. How about I cook your favorite dishes for lunch?”
Cang Lan’s originally fierce gaze instantly turned as soft as water. She sheepishly grabbed Yu Xuanji’s wrist, retracted her sharp black dragon claws, and nodded with a bashful expression.
Yu Xuanji’s voice was thin, soft, and light, and she was even tugging at her sleeve and swaying—could this be the legendary “acting spoiled”?
It was simply… simply…
At this thought, Cang Lan quietly turned her head away, not letting Yu Xuanji see her reddening, burning cheeks.
Yu Xuanji naturally saw it, but she didn’t say anything. Instead, she carried the ginseng baby into the bedroom. Cang Lan followed behind and saw the loathsome little sprite making faces and sticking its tongue out at her, causing her to grind her teeth fiercely.
She hadn’t expected Yu Xuanji to like children so much. Noisy, fussy, with short arms and legs, looking like a chubby enchanted radish—what was there to see? It was practically a little monster!
In the kitchen, Yu Xuanji put on an apron and busily began stewing fish and stir-frying vegetables.
In the bedroom, Cang Lan lay prone on the bed, staring at the ginseng baby who had already been washed and dressed by Yu Xuanji, lightly stroking her own chin.
Yu Xuanji had asked her to watch the ginseng baby, so Cang Lan gnawed on a carrot, occasionally sparing her a sidelong glance.
The ginseng baby was wearing a red belly-warmer, and its originally loose hair had been tied by Yu Xuanji into two round little buns with red ribbons, looking exactly like the dolls on New Year paintings.
It was cute enough, but Cang Lan had no heart to appreciate it. She was plotting how to kick this annoying brat out without Yu Xuanji finding out.
The carrot was gone after a few grinds of her teeth. Cang Lan didn’t like eating the carrot greens and couldn’t find a place to throw the trash, so she casually stuffed the leftover leaves into the ginseng baby’s mouth. Cang Lan pinched the baby’s chin with one hand and pressed her head with the other, helping her manually chew a few times. “Don’t you dare spit it out!”
The ginseng baby’s cheeks were bulging. She swallowed the carrot greens, smiled, and said “delicious” in a milky voice. She leaned in, hugged Cang Lan’s arm, and said giggling, “Long Long, Long Long’s body smells so good and feels so comfortable!”
Cang Lan frowned and dodged to the side, not wanting the little brat to touch her. She continued her threats: “Aren’t you afraid I’ll eat you?”
The ginseng baby laughed and said, “I’m not afraid! Xuanji said just now that you have a ‘bean-curd mouth but a heart like a knife’—no, wait—that you won’t bully me, and you certainly won’t eat me.”
Cang Lan gave a cold snort through her nose. “Uneducated. It’s called ‘a knife mouth but a bean-curd heart,’ you ignorant bumpkin.”
The ginseng baby giggled and secretly shuffled her feet, quietly creeping closer to Cang Lan. After Cang Lan discovered her intentions, she stood upright by the bed and endured a scolding.
Cang Lan pointed at her nose and said, “No going on the bed! This is where I sleep with my lady. If you dare take one step closer, I’ll have you as a snack!”
The ginseng baby’s mood instantly plummeted, and she looked as if she were about to burst into tears, but Cang Lan wasn’t falling for it. She peeked at Yu Xuanji cooking in the kitchen and whispered, “You little brat, what kind of sweet nothings did you whisper in my lady’s ear? She just asked for my opinion on whether we should let you stay.”
The ginseng baby wrinkled her face pitifully and shook her head. “Long-Long, I didn’t. Xuanji only said I was very cute and felt very comfortable to hold… Hey, Long-Long, where are you going?”
With a gust of wind, Cang Lan flashed into the kitchen. She stood silently behind Yu Xuanji, slowly approached her, and then pulled her directly into an embrace.
Yu Xuanji was in the middle of chopping vegetables. Being hugged so suddenly by Cang Lan, the snow-white, sharp blade almost cut her finger. Her body was already hot from the kitchen steam, and now a warm body was pressed against her back. Yu Xuanji smiled helplessly. “A-Lan, what are you doing? I haven’t finished cooking yet.”
Cang Lan’s chin rested against Yu Xuanji’s cheek, rubbing against her soft, smooth skin. She leaned on her shoulder and said with a face full of grievance, “My lady said just now that the little vixen is cute and comfortable to hold. I’m unhappy.”
Yu Xuanji asked in surprise, “Who did you hear that from?”
Cang Lan said angrily, “That fat radish! She’s short, fat, and has stubby legs. She’s an uneducated bumpkin. How is she cute? I have long arms, long legs, a thin waist, and I’m as beautiful as a flower with great skills, yet you’ve never praised me for being cute. I’m unhappy; I want you to coax me!”
Before Yu Xuanji could speak, Cang Lan continued as if it were only natural, “Clearly, I am the cutest dragon in my lady’s heart. I don’t allow you to say any other demon is cute, even behind my back. Otherwise, I’ll be angry!”
Yu Xuanji tried to turn around, but Cang Lan was holding her too tightly. She had no choice but to put down the kitchen knife, gently place a hand on Cang Lan’s cheek, and say with a smile, “It’s all my fault. You are the cutest in the whole world; one couldn’t find another like you in heaven or earth.”
Cang Lan rested one hand on Yu Xuanji’s lower abdomen and, taking her by surprise, gave it a pinch through the clothes. Then she moved her hand to Yu Xuanji’s waist and gave another light pinch.
Yu Xuanji’s body went weak. She leaned into Cang Lan’s arms and took a slow breath, pleading, “Mmm… it itches… stop messing around…”
Cang Lan smiled mischievously, surprised to have discovered a secret about Yu Xuanji’s body. She asked beamingly, “Then tell me, am I your most beloved little sweetheart? Speak quickly! No lying!”
Yu Xuanji’s eyes shimmered with tears. Tickled by Cang Lan at her waist, she nodded, caught between laughter and tears. “Yes, yes, yes, you are, you are.”
Cang Lan remained relentless. Her hand grew even more active as she gave a firm but not heavy pinch to the soft flesh of Yu Xuanji’s waist, saying with satisfaction, “That’s more like it. But that sounded a bit perfunctory. I demand you repeat exactly what I just said, or I’ll let you see just how formidable I can be!”
