- Chapter 14 - My Heart is Beating So Fast, Is It Not Good to Sleep With Me?
The moonlight was faint and eerie, and the cries of owls drifted in from outside the cave.
Cang Lan kicked off her shoes and outer garments, climbed onto the bed, lifted the quilt, and slipped inside. Just then, Yu Xuanji happened to turn over, and Cang Lan naturally took her into a full embrace, her chin resting right against Yu Xuanji’s brow.
It was unclear whether Yu Xuanji was awake or asleep; she didn’t say a word, her eyes remained tightly closed as she snuggled into Cang Lan’s arms.
Cang Lan moved her lips, originally intending to say a few more words of apology to make Yu Xuanji happy, but at this moment, her limited vocabulary offered nothing beyond a simple “I’m sorry.”
Stories of “bearing thorns to plead for forgiveness” flashed through her mind. Cang Lan held her breath, preparing to speak, when Yu Xuanji’s clear, cold voice drifted up from below: “Why is your body so cold? Did you sleep in the Frost Pond again?”
Yu Xuanji’s cheek was currently pressed against her neck. Her light, warm breath spilled entirely over the skin of Cang Lan’s throat, sending waves of dense, tingling sensations through her.
Goosebumps rose across Cang Lan’s body as she gave a soft, muffled “Mhm.”
Yu Xuanji seemed to let out a sigh. She wrapped her arms tightly around Cang Lan’s body and said softly, “Don’t sleep in the Frost Pond anymore in the future. It’s too cold. Is it not good to sleep with me?”
Cang Lan stammered, “It’s… it’s wonderful…”
In the darkness, Cang Lan’s bright golden pupils flickered. She took a deep breath, slowly closed her eyes, and began to report to Yu Xuanji where she had gone today and whom she had met.
Cang Lan whispered, “After I left the Dragon Pond today, I went to the Old Phoenix’s place. I saw that the vegetables in her garden were exceptionally green, so I thought… I’d bring some back for you to taste.”
Yu Xuanji chuckled softly. “Didn’t you plant some a few days ago? They will grow big in a while; there’s no need to rush.”
Cang Lan rubbed her chin against the top of Yu Xuanji’s head and continued, “Oh right, I handed the White Bone Spirit I caught the other day over to the Old Phoenix. She hasn’t figured anything out yet, though. That spirit can’t talk and is timid as a mouse; it has no idea of its own strength.”
Yu Xuanji asked curiously, “The Old Phoenix—who is she? A good friend of yours?”
Cang Lan explained, “A friend… I suppose so. Sometimes she’s like a mentor, but more often than not, I feel like she’s like my mother. I talk back to her quite often.”
Yu Xuanji asked again, “So you actually have a mother?”
Cang Lan shook her head. “No. The Old Phoenix said I was nurtured by the spiritual energy of Heaven and Earth. I was an egg from birth and stayed in the shell for tens of thousands of years before hatching. So, I have no mother, and no family.”
A hand gently patted Cang Lan’s back, as light and soft as if soothing an infant. Yu Xuanji comforted her softly, saying, “If that is the case, then Heaven and Earth are your mother, and this world is your home. You are not without family; you still have me by your side.”
Upon hearing this, Cang Lan felt a surge of joy, but soon her eyelids drooped and she grew dejected. “But… you are a human, even if you eat Lon—”
Her words came to an abrupt halt. Cang Lan bit her lower lip and held her breath, her brain racing for a moment. Before she could speak, Yu Xuanji asked, “Lon-what?”
Cang Lan’s eyes darted around as she pretended nothing had happened. “Nothing. I said I’m a bit deaf. Right… I just came out of the Frost Pond, and I’ve got water in my ears.”
She didn’t even believe her own words, but Yu Xuanji seemed to believe her. Instead of pressing further, she reached up and touched Cang Lan’s ear, asking with a worried expression, “Water in your ear? Which one? Let me see, I’ll help you get it out.”
The touch on her ear made Cang Lan feel itchy and tingly. She couldn’t help but hunch her shoulders and dig at her ear with a finger. “Wife, I’m fine now. The water has dried up… don’t touch it anymore, it tickles!”
Once Yu Xuanji’s hand left her ear, the itch gradually faded, yet Cang Lan found herself slightly unaccustomed to its absence. She grumbled inwardly, thinking this must be because Yu Xuanji was usually far too fond of being “hands-on” with her.
Yes, this was definitely Yu Xuanji’s fault.
The human and the dragon lay on their sides facing each other. In the darkness, Cang Lan could see Yu Xuanji’s face perfectly, even down to each individual eyelash. She breathed in small sips, her heart thumping wildly.
Cang Lan was nervous, but thinking that a human’s night vision was very poor—almost blind to things right in front of them—she gradually relaxed and began to stare at Yu Xuanji’s face wantonly.
Yu Xuanji’s skin was so white, her nose so straight, her eyes so large, her lashes so long, and her lips so red. Cang Lan racked her brain but could only come up with these simple words to describe a person. She truly regretted not studying poetry and literature properly with the Old Phoenix; then she could have spoken elegantly or written poems to praise Yu Xuanji and make her happy.
Cang Lan knew she wasn’t a “cultured dragon.” If Yu Xuanji ever discovered her illiteracy and looked down on her, or truly wanted to divorce her, what would she do?
Hmph, it was Yu Xuanji who fell into the Barren Lands. Since Cang Lan had saved her and nourished her body every day with so many precious herbs and dragon blood, she must surely repay the debt by marrying her.
Want to dump her? Not a chance!
Cang Lan didn’t realize how vivid her expressions had become in that short span of time. Taking advantage of the darkness—thinking Yu Xuanji couldn’t see—she plucked up the courage to touch the other woman’s soft, warm palm.
Sensing that Yu Xuanji didn’t react and was instead letting her touch and hold her hand, Cang Lan grew bolder. Her fingers shifted upward, taking Yu Xuanji’s entire hand into her own palm. She curled her lips in satisfaction, grinning from ear to ear.
Since it was so dark, Yu Xuanji surely couldn’t see how beautiful her expression was right now. Cang Lan hadn’t really felt Yu Xuanji’s hand properly before; the skin on the back of it was so soft and smooth—it felt wonderful, even smoother than the gems she hid in the depths of the Dragon Pond.
Possessed by some sudden impulse, Cang Lan lowered her head and pressed a light kiss onto the back of Yu Xuanji’s hand. The moment she realized what she had done, her lips trembled, her neck stiffened, and she slowly backed away, her palms beginning to sweat.
Fearing that Yu Xuanji would notice her abnormal behavior, Cang Lan quickly withdrew her hand and silently turned around, putting her back to Yu Xuanji.
Cang Lan thought that would be the end of it, but unexpectedly, a soft body pressed against her back, and her waist was tightly embraced by an arm. That arm slid slowly up from her abdomen, eventually coming to rest over her chest.
Cang Lan took a deep breath and pinned Yu Xuanji’s hand down firmly, warning fiercely, “Stop it! If you keep touching me, I’ll really bite you!”
Something cool pressed against the back of Cang Lan’s neck—it was likely Yu Xuanji’s nose, rubbing slowly against that patch of smooth skin.
Then, Yu Xuanji’s fingertips pressed against the spot over Cang Lan’s heart, seemingly concentrating on feeling the thunderous heartbeat. Cang Lan bit the tip of her tongue, wishing she could swap her tongue for Yu Xuanji’s so the other woman could taste the pain too.
Cang Lan was startled by this terrifying thought. What was she daydreaming about? Why would she think about biting Yu Xuanji’s tongue? If she was going to bite anything, it should be this misbehaving hand.
Physical action often moves faster than the mind. Cang Lan grabbed Yu Xuanji’s wrist, pulled the hand out from inside her collar, and bit down directly.
The moment her lips touched the back of Yu Xuanji’s hand, Cang Lan’s teeth felt a wave of numbness. This tingling sensation instantly spread throughout her body; she thought she had been struck by lightning again. However, this “lightning strike” felt rather pleasant.
Yu Xuanji simply let her gnaw. Her thin voice came from behind, carrying a hint of subtle confusion: “A-Lan, are you sick? Your heart is beating so fast. Also… are you using my hand to grind your teeth?”
Cang Lan chewed fiercely on the back of Yu Xuanji’s hand for quite a while. When she let go, she left behind two faint red tooth marks and a hand covered in dragon saliva.
Feeling the hand become sticky, Cang Lan felt a wave of guilt. Holding Yu Xuanji’s wrist, she began to lick the back of the hand over and over again like a kitten grooming itself, cleaning it off.
