- Chapter 3 - Unable to Leave
In the past, during their long time together, Jiao Jin had only ever heard Cui Yu tell her to “get out.” This was the first time she had ever heard her plead for her not to leave. A faint, curious smile played at the corners of Jiao Jin’s lips. She didn’t pull her hand away immediately, instead staring at the trembling gaze before her eyes that were flickering and filled with uneasy trepidation.
“You… you’re staying, right?”
In an instant, Cui Yu’s eyes were filled with starlight. Not being rejected was the best possible outcome. She smiled joyfully, yet the strength in her grip didn’t lessen at all. For some reason, she felt that only by touching this person could she glean any semblance of security.
Jiao Jin was not easily moved. Possessing significantly more strength, she broke free from the restraint and opened the communicator on her wrist. Finding Director Cui’s account, she explained the current situation without hesitation.
However, it seemed Cui Peining had also informed Director Cui, albeit in a much more hostile tone.
Fortunately, Director Cui was a person of great integrity. She first apologized for her younger daughter’s recklessness and then mentioned that she and her wife would arrive at the hospital in half an hour.
Hardly caring about such things, Jiao Jin replied with a simple “Okay.” She then looked toward Cui Peining, who was glaring at her, and Cui Yu, whose eyes were red from crying but was suppressing her grievances. The latter looked quite well-behaved, though her eyes never stopped chasing Jiao Jin.
“Cui Yu, your family will be here soon. I…”
Before she could finish saying “I’ll head out first,” a pair of arms wrapped around her waist again. The woman, who had clearly been standing some distance away, seemed to crash into her. Even with Jiao Jin’s physical conditioning, she had to take a few steps back to steady herself. Her heart rate quickened slightly from the sensation of weightlessness. Frowning, she looked down and saw a mess of hair tickling her neck.
Then came a sensation of damp heat. Clearly, Cui Yu was crying; the trembling of the body in her arms confirmed it.
“Cui Yu…”
Helplessly calling the woman’s name, Jiao Jin intended to push her away. But when Cui Yu looked up, lips pressed tight, eyes shimmering with tears, and her red-tipped nose twitching occasionally. Jiao Jin finally understood the meaning of the phrase “a sight to move one to pity.”
There was still some lingering sentiment, after all. Jiao Jin simply lowered her hands and said, “Cui Yu, why won’t you listen to reason? I am your ex. Cui Peining is your sister. She’s the one you should be hugging right now.”
Unexpectedly, upon hearing this, the woman in her arms held on even tighter. Her voice, thick with tears, sounded like a frightened kitten. “I… I don’t know. I only feel safe when I see you right now.”
It was likely a case of “imprinting” having lost her memory, she had developed a dependent attachment to the first person she saw. Jiao Jin looked helplessly at Cui Peining and, as expected, met a gaze full of resentment. Based on her understanding, that look meant: “If you make my sister cry again, you’re dead.”
It was actually quite funny. This haughty and insolent second miss was actually a total “sister-con,” willing to swallow her insults just so her sister wouldn’t cry.
Jiao Jin wasn’t sure what nerve had misfired, but she actually raised her hand and gently patted Cui Yu’s back to comfort her. The woman felt thin, her bones clearly defined. At the touch, the woman in her arms shivered before shyly burying her face into the warmth of Jiao Jin’s neck.
Her collarbone was occupied by warm, somewhat rapid breathing. She could feel Cui Yu’s tension and joy.
The woman in her arms soon leaned her entire weight against her, her breathing becoming steady. She had likely fallen asleep. Indeed, all that crying and fussing must have been exhausting. Jiao Jin hooked her arms under Cui Yu’s knees and, with a relatively gentle motion, placed her back on the hospital bed.
“Hey, come out here.”
Just as she finished tucking her in, Jiao Jin was summoned by Cui Peining in a hushed whisper. The two went to a far corner of the corridor, one calm and composed, the other fuming with rage. The atmosphere was a one sided standoff.
Nonchalantly folding her arms, Jiao Jin leaned against the wall. Three years ago, she might have felt nervous, but now she thoroughly understood the personalities of the two Cui daughters. “Second Miss, what is it?”
“Did you drug my sister? Or did you put a spell on her? Why on earth does she only trust you?”
“You’re still hung up on that? I’d say you should spend your time thinking about how to get the people who kidnapped your sister a few more years in prison.”
Jiao Jin’s candid manner made Cui Peining realize that she certainly hadn’t done anything underhanded. In truth, the three of them were old acquaintances. Although the person in front of her was annoying, she was upright and resilient, otherwise, she wouldn’t have reached the position of Deputy Director based on ability alone.
Sighing, Cui Peining lowered her head. Her tone was sincere, though her voice was quite small. “Sorry, I misunderstood you. And… thank you for saving my sister.”
Being “indifferent” meant that whether Cui Peining was being arrogant or truly humble, Jiao Jin didn’t care. She nodded. “Fine. I’m leaving then. I have a lot of work to do.”
“Hey, wait a second.”
Helplessly turning back, Jiao Jin asked, “What now?”
Cui Peining fidgeted with her hands, but considering her sister, she cleared her throat and looked at the floor. “Give me your contact info. I’m afraid my sister might need you for something.”
“But I have no desire to maintain contact with her.”
Her voice was cold. Memories of the hysterical scenes between the two of them three years ago surfaced in Jiao Jin’s mind. Looking back rationally, it felt almost laughable. She shoved her hands into her pockets and turned to walk away.
Whatever guilt Cui Peining had managed to muster vanished instantly. She watched Jiao Jin’s retreating back, fuming. “Who wants to stay in touch with you anyway?! Give her an inch and she takes a mile! Ptooey!”
However, mid-curse, she saw Jiao Jin stop in her tracks. She thought the woman was coming back to argue, but then she saw her own two mothers. “Yikes…”
The Director’s hearing was naturally excellent. The cursing just now hadn’t been quiet. Meeting Director Cui’s icy gaze, Cui Peining gave an awkward laugh and hurried back into the office.
As for Jiao Jin, she could only lament her string of bad luck. Just as she was about to leave, another obstacle appeared. But since this was her superior, she bowed slightly. “Director Cui.”
“No need for formalities. Thank you for looking after Xiao Yu.”
“No, it was just my duty.”
Though both said there was no need for formalities, they were exceedingly polite. Director Cui looked appreciatively at the tall, poised, and humble Jiao Jin. “Can I call you Xiao Jiao? I saw your file, you’re five years younger than my eldest daughter. Truly a case of being young and promising.”
Lowering her head a bit further, Jiao Jin nodded. “Of course. It would be my honor.”
Exchanging a glance with her wife, Director Cui started walking toward Cui Yu’s ward. She added, “Xiao Jiao, can you come in with me to see Xiao Yu? I heard she’s currently only reliant on you. I’m afraid she might feel uneasy facing us.”
The older woman appeared mature, steady, and kind. Jiao Jin’s stiffness was merely her usual way of conducting herself. She followed half a step behind, feeling a twinge of envy that the Cui sisters had such a family.
Opening the door, they saw the woman on the bed still asleep, her cheeks slightly puffed out, looking innocent and cute.
“Is Xiao Yu asleep?”
“Yes, she’s likely exhausted.”
Even though they kept their voices very low, Cui Yu seemed extremely sensitive to the frequency of Jiao Jin’s voice. She struggled to roll over, her brow furrowing.
Noticing this, Madam Cui signaled to go outside to talk. However, just as Jiao Jin took two steps, she heard stumbling footsteps behind her. Then, she was hugged once again. Cui Yu wasn’t fully awake yet, but she knew one thing for certain…
“Jiao Jin, are you… are you going to leave again?”
