- Chapter 4 - Taking Her Home
Deeply helpless, Jiao Jin felt as though she had become a “Cui Yu magnet.” The person being held looked toward Director Cui as if seeking rescue. “Director, you see it too. This is the current situation.”
It was actually quite a novel sight. Director Cui had always felt her eldest daughter was cold and lacked a certain human touch. Seeing her now, peeking out curiously from behind Jiao Jin’s back with an uneasy yet adorable expression, she looked like a little white rabbit hiding behind a tree, thinking she was invisible while quietly watching you.
“It’s alright. This is the first time I’ve seen Xiao Yu act like this.”
Perhaps because Director Cui appeared more kind and gentle than the fierce, eyebrow-knitting Cui Peining from earlier, Cui Yu finally let go of Jiao Jin’s wrist with one hand and slowly stepped out. “You are…?”
Finally freed from the restraint around her waist, Jiao Jin breathed a sigh of relief and tried to pull her hand away. To her surprise, what she thought was a loose grip was actually quite firm. She even received a delicate, reproachful look from Cui Yu, a silent, coquettish plea not to let go.
“Xiao Yu, I am your mother.”
It was only after fully realizing that Cui Yu had lost her memory that a sense of sadness set in. Mrs. Cui had received a message from Cui Peining and had gone to learn more about the medical condition. Director Cui wanted to reach out and pull her daughter down to sit, but before she could even extend her hand, she saw Cui Yu hide behind Jiao Jin in fear, not even daring to peek her head out again.
The three persons hospital room fell into a sudden silence. Jiao Jin moved a few steps to the side, trying to expose Cui Yu, but as she moved, the woman behind her shifted in perfect sync to stay hidden. In Director Cui’s eyes, the scene was both ridiculous and endearing.
The older woman smiled and sat down in a nearby chair, keeping a moderate distance, far enough not to make Cui Yu feel uneasy.
“Xiao Yu, don’t be afraid. I won’t come over.”
Hearing this, Cui Yu finally ventured to show her head, though she still gripped Jiao Jin’s hand tightly. Her voice was soft, carrying the innocent confusion of a small animal. “I’m sorry… I, I don’t remember you.”
To say it didn’t matter would be a lie. Director Cui sighed. “Xiao Yu, are the injuries on your body serious?”
Sensing the kindness and feeling less afraid, Cui Yu’s throat bobbed nervously as she shook her head. “I’m okay. It just hurts a little bit.”
“Xiao Jiao, I’m going to have to trouble you.”
Jiao Jin hadn’t expected Director Cui to suddenly turn the conversation toward her. She had been wanting to withdraw her hand for a long time, but since her superior was right in front of her and was this woman’s mother, she had been enduring it. Hearing the words of concern now, she felt a sudden pang of guilt. “It’s no trouble. It’s just holding hands for a bit.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Huh?”
On the way over, Director Cui and Mrs. Cui had already considered the worst-case scenario. Director Cui decided to test the waters: “Xiao Yu, I see your injuries aren’t too bad. How about we go back to the Cui residence today? It will certainly be much safer there, a situation like this will never happen again.”
As she spoke, the woman’s body began to tremble more violently. Her eyes reddened, and her grip on Jiao Jin’s hand tightened significantly. Her soft voice, however, was firm. “I’m not going. I… I want to be with her.”
Jiao Jin, who had assumed she was just an outsider, suddenly found herself dragged into the center of it. She tried hard to extract her hand, but it was impossible, instead, a red mark began to form around her wrist.
Inexplicably, the scene had turned into a pair of eloping young lovers meeting an elder.
“Cui Yu, hey, let go! This is your mother. Why are you pestering me?”
“No! Jiao Jin, you… you can’t abandon me…”
As she spoke, her mouth puckered as if she were about to burst into tears. Her wet eyes and flushed nose made her look utterly pitiful. Jiao Jin looked at Director Cui helplessly, signaling that she truly wasn’t the one trying to keep Cui Yu from leaving.
However, the older woman simply sighed, as if she had anticipated this. “Xiao Jiao, this is the ‘trouble’ I mentioned. Xiao Yu clearly cannot leave you right now. So… can you take her home with you?”
What?
Jiao Jin almost let a curse slip. She never expected Director Cui to be so “open-minded.” She was stunned. “Are you serious?”
“I know about you. You don’t have much family, only a younger Omega sister, Jiao Ran, who is still in university. The tuition is quite expensive, isn’t it?”
Although the content sounded like a threat, Director Cui’s voice remained gentle, as if she were merely chatting about family matters and genuinely cared. Jiao Jin lowered her head, offering a silent admission.
“Given your age, I can’t raise your military rank any further. How about I give you a larger bonus instead? Consider it compensation for looking after Xiao Yu.”
While she did have difficulties with the tuition fees, Jiao Jin didn’t want the trouble of Cui Yu entering her quiet life. She shook her head. “I’m sorry, Director Cui, I can’t accept.”
“Is it because of how things ended between you and Xiao Yu before? I heard from Peining that you two had a relationship three years ago.”
Jiao Jin’s gaze dropped to the floor. She hadn’t expected that even this was known. Unable to act completely indifferent, she once again offered a silent admission. “Yes. Our breakup was very ugly. I don’t have any good feelings toward Cui Yu now.”
“How about this, if you are willing to take Xiao Yu home, I will grant you access permissions to the Memory Bureau. After all, Xiao Yu was the one in charge of it before. In her current state, she obviously cannot work. I know you have always wanted a position there.”
In front of a person who held all your weaknesses, Jiao Jin ultimately found it impossible to refuse a second time. She pondered for a moment, glancing at the woman still clutching her hand. Cui Yu’s eyes had dimmed when she heard Jiao Jin say she had no feelings for her, yet she still looked at Jiao Jin with expectation.
Cui Yu still hoped Jiao Jin would take her home.
For a multitude of reasons, Jiao Jin accepted the outcome. Under Director Cui’s thanks, she led Cui Yu to her car.
Inside the car, the seatbelt buckle required the owner’s fingerprint to unlock. Having never driven anyone else before, Jiao Jin had forgotten this. She started to lean over to press her forefinger against the sensor, but as Cui Yu’s light, fresh breath brushed against the tip of her nose, she realized the movement was too intimate. She got out of the car instead and pressed her print from the side door.
“Jiao Jin, do you hate me that much?”
Having become innocent and naive, Cui Yu had grown much bolder. The old Cui Yu would have likely only guessed privately and never spoken up, but now she was direct. Her gaze was clouded, looking profoundly sad.
After all, at the moment their distance closed, she had become so tense her back went stiff and a faint itch prickled her skin, yet this person chose to pull away.
She couldn’t quite say if it was disappointment or sorrow, but whenever Jiao Jin distanced herself, she felt uneasy and afraid. Cui Yu grabbed the hand resting beside her, her fingertips slowly tightening to secretly increase the area of contact. The corners of her lips curved up slightly as she suppressed the tremor in her voice.
“Jiao Jin, can you… can you just treat this as the first time we’ve met? Please don’t hate me, okay?”
