- Chapter 2 - The Sense of Being Needed
The confusion on the woman’s face was vivid, lending a touch of loveliness to her mature and cold beauty. Cui Yu seemed not to understand her meaning, tilting her head as she asked, “A statement? Why do I need to make a statement?”
Her fingertip hovered over the recording button on the screen. Jiao Jin looked up, her expression indifferent. “You are the victim in my case. Do you consent to being recorded?”
“The victim?”
“Yes. The mission I received involved a kidnapping case. I tracked the suspect and found you.”
“So, are you a police officer?”
Seeing the genuine curiosity in Cui Yu’s eyes, Jiao Jin finally believed she had truly lost her memory. She nodded, giving an ambiguous “Something like that,” before directly turning on the recording function. She asked, “Do you remember why you were kidnapped?”
“I don’t remember. I didn’t even know my own name until you told me.”
“You have no memory at all?”
“None. Only some general knowledge and common sense.”
Realizing she wouldn’t get any useful information, Jiao Jin turned off the recording. She pulled over a stool, sat down, and looked directly at the obedient looking Cui Yu on the hospital bed. “Then you don’t remember me either?”
Cui Yu felt inexplicably nervous, as if those eyes could see right through her. However, since she truly had no memory, she tried her best to maintain a composed front. “No, I don’t remember.”
“Fine. Then let me tell you. I am your ex.”
Cui Yu’s eyes widened instantly. She hadn’t expected them to have such a relationship. Her voice carried a hint of hesitation as she asked, “Are we… still lingering on each other then?”
Jiao Jin’s dark, sharp brows furrowed. She hadn’t expected that the woman, once a blank slate, would become much bolder than her formerly reserved self. Jiao Jin shook her head. “There is no lingering. We treat each other as if the other were dead.”
“Did we break up… very badly?”
Memories of the past suddenly flooded back, the sight of Cui Yu’s eyes rimmed with red and the gloomy emotions that had stained Jiao Jin’s own heart. She didn’t know how to answer. Fortunately, a figure appeared at the door. When the knocking sounded, Jiao Jin replied with a “Come in” and turned around.
The woman in the white lab coat also possessed a haughty and cold beauty, though she had a sharper edge of aggression compared to the currently soft and vulnerable Cui Yu. Standing at the door, Cui Peining immediately noticed that something was wrong with her sister.
“Sister, what happened? Did this person upset you again?”
Jiao Jin felt someone quickly hide behind her; the hand clutching her shirt was trembling slightly. Jiao Jin’s furrowed brows did not relax. She heard Cui Peining’s unfriendly voice again: “Jiao Jin, what did you do this time?”
Jiao Jin tried to pull her hand away, but Cui Yu held on too tightly, as if clutching a literal lifeline. Left with no choice, Jiao Jin laid out the situation for Cui Peining. “I didn’t do anything. It’s your sister who won’t let go of me.”
“You must have done something! My sister hates you so much, how could she possibly cling to you?”
Seemingly frightened by the harsh tone, Cui Yu shrank further behind the only person who could give her a sense of security. Her voice was tremulous: “Who… who is she?”
“Jiao Jin!”
Being glared at by Cui Peining, Jiao Jin found herself unable to explain her way out. With a look that said believe it or not, she said, “Your sister has amnesia. She’s been like this since she woke up. I’m annoyed too.”
After explaining to the second Miss Cui, Jiao Jin turned back to the eldest Miss hiding behind her. “This is your younger sister, Cui Peining.”
“My sister?”
As if she only trusted Jiao Jin’s words, Cui Yu’s trembling gradually subsided. She plucked up the courage to look at Cui Peining, who was clearly worried about her. Although this woman was fierce toward Jiao Jin, she seemed very gentle toward her.
“Are you… my sister?”
“Sister, do you really not remember anything? Are you sure this person hasn’t cast some kind of spell on you?”
Cui Peining moved toward Cui Yu in her excitement, only to scare the rabbit like woman again. Jiao Jin, referred to as “this person,” felt her hand being gripped once more. Truly irritated by the suspicion, she deliberately wrapped an arm around Cui Yu’s waist. “Look at how much you’re scaring her.”
“You!”
Cui Peining didn’t dare step forward again, but she couldn’t stand Jiao Jin’s provocative attitude. She opened her communicator to call for medical staff. Previously, they had focused only on external injuries and hadn’t checked for memory damage.
“Fine. You Cuis can solve your own family matters. I have work to do.”
Jiao Jin intended to leave, but the hand clutching her remained firm. Helplessly, Jiao Jin looked at Cui Yu, whose eyes were turning red. The beauty seemed to blush when her waist was held, at this moment, she was like a red rose with its thorns removed, aggrieved yet radiant, silently pleading for touch.
“This fierce woman is your sister, and I am just your ex. You’re smart; you should know who you ought to rely on, right?”
Cui Yu shook her head firmly, her pupils already shimmering with unshed tears. Her grip tightened. “Don’t… don’t go.”
“Why won’t you listen to reason?”
Even if this woman had forgotten, Jiao Jin hadn’t. There were things from the past she could never forget. She thought she had moved on, but the current surge of hostility and impatience proved otherwise. She forcefully pried Cui Yu’s hand away, her gaze cold. “Give me back my coat.”
Under a pitiful gaze, Jiao Jin retrieved her khaki military coat, which bore the rank of Second Lieutenant. She glanced at Cui Peining, who still wore an expression of disgust, and smiled sardonically. “Oh right, and you, remember to pay me back.”
“Bah! Who wants to owe you money?”
However, Cui Peining had deleted Jiao Jin’s account three years ago. She crossed her arms with a disdainful look. “I don’t have your number. Give it to me again.”
“Since when did the second Miss become even more arrogant than the first?”
Jiao Jin knew that in the eyes of these two daughters of the Cui family, she was like an ant. But the more she was looked down upon, the more she wanted to laugh. She indifferently opened the payment code on her wrist. An avatar appeared in the air, a field of burning flames. “Pay up.”
After transferring the medical expenses to Jiao Jin, Cui Peining’s impatience became even more obvious. “The money is returned. You should leave now, shouldn’t you?”
Jiao Jin nodded. She had intended to leave, but a large group of doctors suddenly swarmed into the room, blocking her path. Because of the influx of strangers, Jiao Jin’s hand was grabbed once more. She was equally frustrated as she looked at the trembling Cui Yu.
The woman’s thin frame was swallowed by the oversized hospital gown. The collar was slightly loose, revealing the beautiful shape of her collarbones and skin so pale it was almost translucent. What was most heart-wrenching was the clear anxiety and sense of need in her eyes. Her pure, clean gaze appeared bright and enchanting due to her natural beauty. Cui Yu refused to let go, her fingertips turning white from the force. Her voice held a fragile, pleading tone.
“Don’t leave… please?”
