- Chapter 19 - Disappeared Again
“I’ll leave once you answer the question.”
Leaning back leisurely with her arms crossed, like a wicked big cat teasing its prey, Jiao Jin looked at Cui Yu’s deepening blush with a beaming smile, waiting for her answer.
It was obvious this person just wanted to embarrass her. But when she had secretly crawled over to sleep here, how could she have anticipated this scene? Cui Yu’s fingertips gripped the quilt tightly, her voice muffled and thick. “Then why don’t you just stay? Just stay here and keep me company instead.”
This was, of course, the best choice, she wouldn’t have to answer such an embarrassing question, and Jiao Jin wouldn’t have to leave.
However, reason told Cui Yu that while she didn’t know why this person was still standing there chatting with her, the reason certainly wasn’t a desire to stay.
“You certainly have a beautiful imagination.”
Jiao Jin laughed noncommittally. Seeing the flash of disappointment in the woman’s eyes, Jiao Jin habitually brushed the dust off her shoulder. “Alright, remember to pick up your sister tomorrow morning. I’m leaving now.”
“Mm.”
A response that sounded like a sigh exposed all of Cui Yu’s emotions. She didn’t remember Jiao Jin’s habits and mistakenly thought that gesture meant Jiao Jin was disgusted by the spot she had just hugged, as if it were dirty. Her heart seemed to shrink in pain, she pulled her knees to her chest and began to cry helplessly.
By the time Jiao Jin returned to her own apartment, it was already late at night. However, the warm yellow lights were still on inside. A quick thought told her it was her sister waiting up, so Jiao Jin quickened her pace and opened the door.
She saw Jiao Ran wrapped in a quilt with only her head poking out, looking like a Teru Teru Bozu doll. She was so sleepy her head was nodding, yet she forced her eyes open the moment the sound of the door opening rang out.
Her voice was full of pleasant surprise. “Sister! You’re back?”
“It’s so late and you’re so tired, why aren’t you sleeping?”
Reprimand was hidden beneath heartache as Jiao Jin gently stroked the girl’s head. Sitting down on her own bed, she added, “Xiao Ran, you don’t have to wait for me.”
“But it was a promise. We’re supposed to sleep together, so of course we have to fall asleep together.”
“But I still need to take a shower. How about Xiao Ran goes to sleep first?”
“No. You go wash up, Sister; I’ll just play by myself for a bit.”
Though Jiao Ran’s voice was soft, it brooked no argument. Jiao Jin nodded helplessly and took her clothes to the shower. Fortunately, technology was advanced nowadays, a one touch dryer saved her time on blow drying her hair. After a five minutes “combat shower,” the two sisters lay down in bed.
“Sister, I still can’t fall asleep. Let’s chat?”
“About what?”
“For example, what did you do today? Is Cui Yu okay? Did something happen?”
“Nothing happened to her. I met Shen Yu today, do you remember her? My university classmate.”
“Mm, I remember. Back when you and Cui Yu were dating, the two of you almost had a falling out because of it.”
Laughing helplessly, Jiao Jin turned over to lie on her side, facing Jiao Ran in the other bed. “Why do you only remember that? I recall Shen Yu giving you quite a few books and snacks.”
“Because Sister is the most important. She almost hit you back then!”
“She even wanted me to introduce you to her. It seems your impression of her isn’t great.”
Jiao Jin didn’t hold the view that her sister was too young to date, and her friend was considered reliable. She had originally intended to play matchmaker, but then she saw Jiao Ran also turn over to face her with a serious gaze. “Sister, do you want me to start dating?”
“Not necessarily. Just a casual mention in conversation.”
Jiao Jin felt a sudden, inexplicable wave of nervousness. Her sister’s expression wasn’t one of shyness or jitters, but rather one of “facing a great enemy,” as if she were about to confess something. Jiao Jin didn’t know what her sister was hiding, yet she was afraid it was something serious, her sixth sense whispered that it might be better not to know.
“Xiao Ran, focus on your studies for now. It’s better to date after you start working, it’s more stable then, unlike now where everything is full of variables, right?”
“Stable? Variables?”
She seemed to be mulling over those two words. After a moment of thought, Jiao Ran nodded. “Mm, I understand.”
Jiao Jin had no idea what she had understood, but assuming her words had been taken to heart, she nodded as well. “It’s too late. Let’s sleep.”
The two of them were truly talking at cross purposes.
In the morning, Jiao Jin was woken up by a sharp sting on her wrist. By then, she was the only one left in the room. Frowning, she dialed Cui Yu’s number, her tone a bit impatient. “Have you ever heard the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf? If you press the alarm a few more times like this, I won’t bother coming next time.”
But the voice on the other end was panicked. “A-Jin, Peining… she’s gone!”
“What?”
“My sister… she’s not… not at the Detention Bureau.”
“Where are you now?”
“I’m at the entrance of the Detention Bureau.”
Dammit. She hurriedly pulled on her uniform. Another task on a non-working day. Jiao Jin couldn’t spare time to wash up or eat the breakfast Jiao Ran had left in the living room, she took the teleportation point directly to the Detention Bureau.
As soon as she stepped through the main gates, her hand was grabbed by the anxious woman. Cui Yu’s fingertips were pressing down so hard they were trembling, revealing her insecurity and tension. “A-Jin, will something happen to Peining?”
“Calm down first, okay? I don’t know the situation yet, but I will do my best to ensure Cui Peining’s safety.”
Jiao Jin never brought personal emotions into her work. Regarding the victim, Cui Peining, she would put in one hundred percent effort to find and rescue her.
However, more importantly, the Detention Bureau, which required specific authorization to open, seemed to have an insider.
She called over a subordinate to pull up the surveillance footage of the space where Cui Peining had been held these past few days. The subordinate stammered for a while before finally revealing the truth, it turned out the second young miss had been released by Madame Cui using her influence as early as the second day of her detention.
Feeling a bit speechless and like she had worried for nothing, Jiao Jin walked out and told Cui Yu bluntly, “That precious sister of yours went back to the Cui household.”
But just then, the vibration returned to her wrist. Jiao Jin checked, it was none other than Director Cui. She figured he had only just realized his wife had released Cui Peining without telling him.
However, once the call connected, her tone returned to being flat. “Director, what is it?”
“Xiao Jiao, Peining… Peining has been snatched!”
“Wasn’t she released by Madame Cui and currently at the Cui residence?”
The other side was silent for an awkward moment before explaining, “It was because the Madame was worried for her daughter. I’ve been busy with the election lately and only just found out it’s too late. But Peining has disappeared from the Cui house!”
“You mean to say, Cui Peining was taken… from inside your own home?”
After receiving a positive confirmation, Jiao Jin thought back to how Cui Yu had also been mysteriously kidnapped from home. She could now roughly understand why the Director kept trying to push his two daughters toward her. Jiao Jin sighed and said, “I’ll bring a team over immediately.”
