- The Alpha Who Played Me Has Re-Differentiated Into a Delicate Omega
- Chapter 20 - One Wave After Another
The team conducted a carpet search of Director Cui’s home, but even with various high-tech devices, they couldn’t find a single clue. Cui Peining seemed to have vanished into thin air, leaving behind no signs of a struggle.
This was completely different from Cui Yu’s previous kidnapping case, it appeared they weren’t dealing with the same culprit.
After spending the entire morning at the Cui residence, Jiao Jin felt there would be no further gains. She led the team back to the Detention Bureau and ordered her subordinates to pull surveillance footage from the streets near the Cui home to look for suspicious individuals. Meanwhile, she went to the Transport Bureau to retrieve data from various teleportation points.
For three consecutive days, they found nothing.
Still at the Detention Bureau, staring at surveillance footage they had already scrutinized countless times, a subordinate rubbed his dry eyes. The words of surrender died in his throat when he saw the bloodshot veins in Jiao Jin’s eyes.
Equally tired and frustrated, Jiao Jin noticed their exhaustion and sighed. “Everyone, head home for the day. You’ve worked hard these past few days. I’ll follow up on this matter myself.”
Amidst a chorus of “It’s no trouble,” there was an urgent knock on the meeting room door.
Looking up in confusion, Jiao Jin rose to open it. Outside stood a subordinate from the Intelligence Department, brows furrowed and expression grim.
“What happened?”
“Major, news of Cui Peining’s kidnapping has somehow leaked. It’s all over the reports outside now.”
Jiao Jin’s temples throbbed with pain. She rubbed them, baffled. “We blockaded the news the entire time, and the investigation was internal. How could the outside world know?”
“I don’t know, but the quadrennial Interstellar Election is in two days. A kidnapping occurring at this critical juncture will have a massive impact on Director Cui’s selection.”
Jiao Jin understood perfectly that this kidnapping implied Director Cui had failed in her governance, especially since the victim was her own second daughter. Jiao Jin nodded to acknowledge the information, then turned to look at her most trusted team. “Did you all hear that? I believe none of you would leak a secret mission to the media, but how exactly did this get out?”
The only people who knew besides them were the members of the Cui family.
The team members looked at each other, clearly all at a loss. Seeing this, Jiao Jin stopped dwelling on it. “Forget it. I’ll face the media tomorrow and explain. Go home for today.”
With a sour expression, Jiao Jin arrived at the three bedrooms apartment via a teleportation point. She had seen many reporters at the entrance of the Detention Bureau, if not for her icy expression, they would have swarmed her for an interview.
Opening the door, she saw Cui Yu sitting cross-legged on the sofa watching a projection. The simple pajamas emphasized her slenderness. Hearing the noise, the woman turned back, her delicate lips curving into a shallow arc, her voice soft and sweet. “A-Jin, you’re back?”
It was a redundant question, but strangely, it felt very warm, as if she had been bored, watching the same reports over and over, just waiting for Jiao Jin to finish work.
Jiao Jin rubbed her nose, suppressing the stray thoughts in her mind. She walked over. “Yeah. What are you watching?”
“The reports about Peining. By the way, why does the media know about her disappearance? Shouldn’t this kind of thing be kept secret?”
“Something went wrong in the chain, and the information leaked.”
Seeing Cui Yu consciously move over to make space, Jiao Jin sat down in the spot that still held a trace of body heat. She asked casually, “Did you go to the hospital today? It was time for your follow-up.”
However, seeing Cui Yu’s look of sudden realization, as if she had just remembered. Jiao Jin shook her head helplessly. “I reminded you this morning, didn’t I?”
“I… I forgot…”
Cui Yu lowered her head. In truth, she remembered, but after Cui Peining was kidnapped, she didn’t dare go out alone. Her fingertips slowly tightened, and she looked up, her voice trembling slightly. “Do… do you have work tomorrow?”
Jiao Jin didn’t need her to voice the request for company to guess it.
Tomorrow was Wednesday. If they weren’t actively investigating the kidnapping, there wasn’t much to do. Jiao Jin didn’t know why she surrendered to those expectant, soft eyes, but she said, “Nothing much. I’ll go with you, so you don’t forget again.”
“Okay.”
The beauty did not skimp on her smile. The sweet yet reserved grin was exceptionally bright. Seeing Cui Yu’s joy, Jiao Jin gave a light cough, a strange tenderness spreading through her heart.
Honestly, the post-amnesia Cui Yu was quite likable.
At that moment, she felt the chip on her wrist vibrate. She looked down; it was a call from Director Cui.
“Director, is something wrong?”
“Xiao Jiao, the election speech is the day after tomorrow. Can you do me a favor?”
“Please, go ahead.”
“As you know, Peining’s kidnapping has caused some controversy for me. If you explain to the media tomorrow, could you help me omit the part about my wife abusing her power? Please.”
Jiao Jin knew she was referring to Mrs. Cui going to the Detention Bureau to privately release someone. Jiao Jin was silent for a moment, then spoke in a deep voice: “Director, I’m sorry. I can only tell the truth.”
“Xiao Jiao…”
The other side didn’t speak further, and after a sigh of “Never mind,” the call ended.
Jiao Jin looked at her wrist before the screen dimmed, only to have her hand caught. She looked up to see Cui Yu’s firm gaze, full of gentle strength. She said, “A-Jin, you are right. They shouldn’t have abused their power. Just tell the truth tomorrow.”
Is this girl thinking I’m conflicted?
Is she trying to comfort me?
Feeling a bit helpless yet finding it funny, Jiao Jin laughed. “I don’t regret my choice just now, because I was right to begin with. You don’t need to comfort me.”
“Eh? Then why were you staring at your wrist like that?”
That look just now, though partially hidden by her long lashes, was one Cui Yu imagined was full of dejection and confusion. She had wanted to tell her she wasn’t wrong, but now?
“I was just thinking about things.”
Jiao Jin pulled her hand away, her handsome brows knitting slightly. She had suddenly realized that her second year of having memories was an election year. That is to say, could her own amnesia be related to the election?
After all, perhaps Cui Peining was kidnapped just to throw mud at Director Cui, to prevent her from being re-elected or moving to a higher position in the Galactic Central Government.
After thinking for a while and deciding this theory wasn’t entirely baseless, Jiao Jin stood up. She decided to go to the Detention Bureau’s Intelligence Department to see who Director Cui’s competitors were.
“A-Jin, what’s wrong? Do you have something to do?”
Not understanding why she suddenly stood up, Cui Yu looked up with an innocent gaze.
“I have some ideas regarding Cui Peining’s case.”
“Eh? A-Jin, do you know who did it?”
“I don’t know yet, I just have a direction to investigate.”
As she spoke, she walked to the door to put on her shoes. Jiao Jin saw the woman who was just sitting on the sofa rush over, her eyes full of eagerness. “Where are you going? Can I come along?”
“Just stay home.”
As she leaned down to put on her shoes, Jiao Jin’s eyes involuntarily lingered on Cui Yu’s slender, pretty ankles close by. She saw Cui Yu take a step forward, her waist almost brushing against Jiao Jin’s lowered head. “I’m going to grow mold staying at home. Just take me with you, okay? Please?”
Jiao Jin finally stood up uncomfortably and looked at the woman gazing up at her. The look was so pitiful it felt as if she’d be a legendary sinner if she didn’t take her along.
“Fine. I’m going to the Detention Bureau. You follow behind and don’t ask a million questions.”
“Okay! I’ll definitely be good.”
It wasn’t that she was bored, she just didn’t want the person she’d just seen to leave again. Deep down, she wanted to be with her constantly, no matter where they went. Following Jiao Jin’s insistence, Cui Yu changed into clothes suitable for going out and obediently put on her shoes and socks. They traveled through the teleportation point to the Detention Bureau.
“Major, why are you back again?”
The subordinate on night shift was surprised to see her. Jiao Jin tilted her head toward the Intelligence Department. “I have some ideas. I came to check some files.”
Then, having the authority to enter, she brought the wide eyed, curious Cui Yu inside.
There were night shift staff inside as well, though Jiao Jin wasn’t familiar with them. She walked over and said, “Hello. I need to handle the election speech the day after tomorrow. Can you give me a list of the candidates running for Director?”
“Certainly.”
The staff member didn’t delay and handed the list containing the candidates’ information to Jiao Jin.
After thanking them, she took Cui Yu to her private office in the Pursuit Department. In the space occupied only by the two of them, the woman’s beautiful face slowly flushed. “A-Jin, I feel a little bit hot.”
“Hot?”
The ventilation here wasn’t bad, and it had been several days since the temporary marking. Logically, the pheromones left in Cui Yu’s body should have been negligible. Jiao Jin reached out to touch the woman’s forehead; it was indeed quite warm.
“A-Jin, your hand feels so good…”
Unaware of how erotic her voice sounded, hazy and laced with desire. Cui Yu grabbed the hand on her forehead, clinging to it with a greedy longing, refusing to let go.
It was strange, even Jiao Jin felt a slow heat rising within her. Irrational thoughts screamed that a sweet prey was right in front of her. Jiao Jin shook her head, feeling grateful she had developed the habit of carrying inhibitors after that accident.
The cold medicine extinguished the fire in her body, but Cui Yu seemed to have lost her senses entirely, fumbling at Jiao Jin’s buttons as if trying to strip her clothes off.
Jiao Jin grabbed her hands firmly. There was no way she could look at the files now. She tucked the data into her virtual space, then hooked her arms under Cui Yu’s knees to pick her up. Ignoring the woman’s constant struggling, they arrived at the hospital.
As expected, after drawing blood, the doctor found that both of them contained components of aphrodisiac drugs. Realizing that Cui Yu’s abnormality began after entering her office, Jiao Jin’s brow furrowed. She didn’t understand who was trying to harm her.
Furthermore, only members of her own team had access to her office.
Her gaze grew colder, but at that moment, her wrist was caught by a soft hand. Jiao Jin looked worriedly at the weak woman on the hospital bed and asked, “Cui Yu, how are you? Are you still hot?”
Cui Yu wasn’t stupid, she realized she had been drugged. Her face was red, yet she was worried about the person in front of her. “I’m okay now, but A-Jin, who is trying to harm you? Why would they put drugs in your office?”
The woman’s weak, powerless voice was full of lingering fear. If they hadn’t gone in tonight, every unknown of tomorrow would have been a danger.
