- Chapter 14 - Why Does It Hurt?
“No.”
Having rejected the tentative words without hesitation, Jiao Jin realized she had actually let her guard down because of this woman’s act of playing cute. Folding her arms, her expression turned cold. “Cui Yu, if you had your memory, you would look down on your current self.”
“But I don’t have my memories right now.”
Becoming equally stubborn, Cui Yu furrowed her beautiful brows. “Is it not enough that the current me likes you very much?”
“It’s not like that.”
Leaning against the door, Jiao Jin wasn’t surprised by the woman’s temperament. She even let out a light chuckle, her voice sounding quite pleasant. “Cui Yu, have you considered me? You like me now, but if I were moved by this cheap, sudden affection, what happens later when you recover your memories and grow to loathe me? How am I supposed to deal with that? You can’t be this selfish.”
Perhaps only realizing this issue now, Cui Yu fell into silence. The two confronted each other wordlessly as time slowly ticked by.
Later, a growl from a stomach interrupted their gaze. Jiao Jin shook her head helplessly, her voice flat. “Hungry? Did you not eat today?”
For some reason, a sense of grievance welled up along with sour bubbles in her heart. Knowing the person in front of her didn’t like crying, Cui Yu lowered her head to hide her reddening eyes. “I only ate the breakfast you bought today.”
“What about lunch? You just don’t eat if I’m not around?”
“No, I… I didn’t have an appetite.”
“Why no appetite?”
Although meal replacements that could solve a day’s energy needs with a single pill had been developed, people still preferred flavorful meals. Especially back when they were dating, Jiao Jin knew Cui Yu loved sweet and spicy food; she usually never missed a meal.
“I…”
Tears overflowed from her moist eyes. When Cui Yu looked up, her cheeks were flushed from crying. Despite her cool and elegant features, she looked pitiful at this moment, like an abandoned Ragdoll cat, beautiful yet aggrieved.
“I… I heard you being so intimate with that girl.”
“Heard?”
Jiao Jin’s ability to catch the key point was clearly different. Folding her arms once more and adopting a scrutinizing, “keep-away” posture, she frowned, her sharp aggression fully on display. “How did you hear it?”
Realizing she had accidentally let the secret slip, Cui Yu didn’t have the courage to lie. Her voice trembling, she said, “Peining’s work card… it has a built-in tracker and recording pen. I… I really didn’t want to monitor you, I was just… just scared…”
Jiao Jin’s first reaction was wondering how her sixth sense hadn’t discovered the trickery of that work card. She had likely underestimated Cui Peining too much. Then she realized she had been monitored the whole way. Despite the high development of the modern era where privacy was often infringed upon, this was the first time she had leaked her information so defenselessly, especially when it involved her most cherished younger sister.
Her expression turned completely cold. Jiao Jin took out the work card still in her pocket, left the room, and kicked open the door to the master bedroom, where Cui Peining was sitting, unaware of what had happened.
The second young miss raised her willow-leaf brows, looking indignant. “Hey, what are you doing?”
Taking out smart handcuffs from her wrist mounted virtual space, Jiao Jin used her absolute physical advantage to cuff Cui Peining’s hands. Her voice was colder than her gaze. “Malicious theft of privacy. You’ll be detained for at least three days. Second Miss, come with me to the Detention Bureau.”
“Hey! Hey, on what grounds are you arresting me? Where’s the evidence?”
Hearing this, Jiao Jin looked at Cui Yu, who had followed them out looking guilty. Perhaps taking advantage of the woman’s current dependence on her, she said, “I’ll give you a chance to make amends. Go to the Detention Bureau and tell the whole truth. If you do, I won’t blame you.”
Cui Yu hesitated, but knowing she and her sister were in the wrong, she clenched her fists. “I will tell the truth. Lock me up too.”
“Hey, Sister! Why are you humoring her? Didn’t we just listen to her and that vixen’s ‘private world’?”
Hearing her sister described by that word again, anger began to rise in Jiao Jin’s calm heart. Grabbing the handcuffs, she spent money at the teleportation point. A second later, the three of them arrived outside the Detention Bureau.
“Deputy Chief Jiao? Did something happen?”
The subordinates all knew this officer who worked desperately hard. Jiao Jin softened her expression slightly and explained the situation.
Privacy laws were very strict now, and with Cui Yu as a self-surrendering witness, the subordinate hesitated for a moment. Recognizing both women as the Director’s precious daughters, he said, “Deputy Chief, are you sure? Won’t this offend Director Jiao?”
Without hesitation, Jiao Jin nodded. “Of course I’m sure. No matter how noble their status, they cannot break the law. Go write the case file. I’ll come to pick them up in three days.”
“Deputy Chief, the second miss can certainly be detained, but Vice Chief Cui currently lacks full legal capacity. You need to take her back.”
As long as one person could be punished, it was enough. Furthermore, Jiao Jin didn’t harbor the same loathing for the amnesiac “poor thing” as she did for Cui Peining. She waved cheerfully at the swearing second miss and then led the contemplative Cui Yu away.
“Hey! Jiao Jin! You get back here!”
Cui Peining was exploding with rage, but her wrist communicator had been disconnected from the network. She was now almost completely isolated. Sitting in the tiny detention cell, she hugged her knees, trembling as she cried, yet still cursing: “Jiao Jin! I hate you!”
After leaving the Detention Bureau, the woman beside her kept her head down. Jiao Jin could guess what she was thinking, likely about how both of them had done wrong, yet only her sister was locked up, and that Cui Peining had broken the law for her sake.
“Cui Yu, do you feel guilty?”
Raising her bewildered eyes, their pupils shimmering with moisture, Cui Yu grabbed Jiao Jin’s arm, her eyes red. “Peining is in there because of me. I also infringed on your privacy.”
“Yes, and?”
“But I’m out here, and it feels very uncomfortable.”
Tears fell in strings. As if finally thinking of a solution, her fingertips slowly tightened. “You… you should punish me. I feel so bad.”
It was the first time Jiao Jin had heard someone actively ask for punishment. She was so surprised she laughed. “How do you want me to punish you?”
“I don’t know, but…”
Her dark pupils were filled with confusion; Cui Yu’s current distress was visible. Her hand slowly slid down, grabbing Jiao Jin’s hand. “How do you usually interrogate prisoners?”
Perhaps because she felt much better after locking Cui Peining up, Jiao Jin was in the mood to joke. She smiled provocatively, looking at the woman’s smooth curves. “I usually have the prisoners strip naked and tie them up for interrogation. Why? You want to try that?”
Cui Yu’s cheeks flushed instantly, and her whole body seemed enveloped in heat. She released Jiao Jin’s hand as if touching a hot potato, her eyes burning. “You… you’re lying to me, right?”
“Yeah, I’m lying.”
Admitting it nonchalantly, Jiao Jin checked the time. It was late enough for dinner. Recalling her previous mention of eating BBQ, she looked at the shamed and indignant Cui Yu. “I’m going to have BBQ now. Are you coming?”
Her inner turmoil had been met with a casual joke. Cui Yu clenched her fists, originally wanting to say no out of spite, but ultimately longing to be with Jiao Jin. She lowered her head. “I’m hungry. I want to go too.”
“Fine.”
Not caring whether she was alone or with someone, Jiao Jin paid the fee at the teleportation point and took Cui Yu to her usual retro charcoal BBQ joint.
However, the moment they stepped into the shop, Cui Yu clutched her chest, appearing to endure an unbearable pain.
It was strange. Jiao Jin had never been to this shop with Cui Yu. She only started coming here with her sister after the breakup. Jiao Jin frowned and asked, “What’s wrong?”
It took a while for Cui Yu to recover, her racing heart finally slowing down. She looked up, her eyes unconsciously red and filled with confusion. “I don’t know. Just now, when I saw the interior decor, my heart suddenly hurt so much.”
“Why would that happen?”
“I don’t know either.”
Looking closely at Cui Yu, the fine sweat on her forehead proved she wasn’t lying. Jiao Jin decided to go to the hospital tomorrow to ask about it, so she didn’t dwell on it further. “Forget it. I’ll ask for you at the hospital tomorrow while I’m requesting leave for Cui Peining. Find a seat.”
Still feeling it was very strange, Cui Yu’s brow remained tightly knit. However, as if her memory stored the location of the window seat on the right, she followed her subconscious and walked over. Her heart throbbed with a faint, stinging pain once more.
Following her to that spot, Jiao Jin suddenly realized something. Wasn’t this the seat she and her sister liked most?
Because of the heavy smoke, Jiao Ran would always act spoiled and say she wanted to sit by the window.
Looking at Cui Yu, who was clutching her chest again and lost in thought, a deeper meaning flickered in Jiao Jin’s eyes.
