- The Alpha Who Played Me Has Re-Differentiated Into a Delicate Omega
- Chapter 15 - To Mark or Not
The sky had already darkened by the time they returned from the barbecue restaurant. As expected, Jiao Jin received a communication from Director Cui. She didn’t avoid Cui Yu, who was visibly wearing an expression of concern and pressed the answer button.
“Little Jiao, I heard you locked Peining up?”
The gentle voice held no reproach, instead, it carried a hint of a smile. “After all these years, someone has finally put Peining in her place. That girl has truly become lawless lately.”
“Director Cui, you don’t blame me?”
“Why would I blame you? I’ve looked at the case files. Peining did something wrong, and it’ll do her some good to be locked up for a few days.”
Jiao Jin hadn’t expected someone in such a high position to remain so fair and just. She glanced at Cui Yu, who seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, and couldn’t help but let out a laugh.
“Little Jiao, what are you laughing at?”
Only then did Jiao Jin realize she had smiled instinctively. She couldn’t very well say she was laughing because Cui Yu was more nervous than she was, it felt a bit like the saying ‘the emperor isn’t worried, but the eunuch is.’ Jiao Jin coughed twice, her voice clearing. “Nothing, I just feel that with a leader like you, the Interstellar Bureau will surely remain prosperous forever.”
“Starting with the official platitudes again?”
Not buying it for a second, Director Cui switched to video mode. She saw her daughter standing beside Jiao Jin. In her memory, the cold and icy Cui Yu had never shown such a restless, shy expression, she looked quite adorable.
“Xiao Yu, do you know what Little Jiao was laughing at just now?”
The older woman in the frame looked very gentle, yet Cui Yu was still somewhat afraid. She gripped Jiao Jin’s wrist, her fingertips tightening slightly. “I… I don’t know.”
“But I know. Little Jiao was laughing at Xiao Yu, right?”
Panic instantly gripped Cui Yu’s expression. She looked up at Jiao Jin, who was now looking a bit uncomfortable. “Did I do something?”
“Ahem.”
Feeling as though she had nowhere to hide under Director Cui’s gaze, Jiao Jin cleared her throat and chose to be honest. “It’s just that when the Director called earlier, you seemed even more worried than I was. And then, when she said it was fine, you looked so relieved… it was just quite cute.”
Following these words, both of them were swept up in a wave of shyness. In contrast, Director Cui, having seen everything, laughed heartily. “Ah, young people should be a bit more honest and bold.”
Seeing that the two remained silent, Director Cui shook her head. “Then I won’t disturb you two any longer. Are your skins really that thin? To think both of you used to be Alphas.”
Their heads hung lower as their faces heated up. Hearing this, Cui Yu stubbornly argued, “I… I’m an Omega now.”
“And what about Little Jiao? If you’re this easily embarrassed, how will you ever fall in love in the future?”
Perhaps following the logic that ‘talking nonsense is the best way to avoid answering questions,’ Jiao Jin pursed her lips and averted her gaze. “I like Alphas. There’s nothing wrong with being a little shy, is there?”
Only then did Director Cui realize that back when this child and her daughter were “dating,” her daughter had been an Alpha. She looked at Cui Yu, who was equally dejected, and asked, “Are you sure? Don’t Alphas usually like Omegas?”
“Then perhaps I’m just unusual.”
After that topic, the conversation reached a natural dead end. Director Cui said she had things to do and hung up. Jiao Jin felt the warmth on her wrist vanish, leaving a faint chill. She looked at Cui Yu, who had her head bowed. Her hair was soft and smooth, it looked like it would feel good to the touch.
Jiao Jin understood exactly what she was thinking. Cui Yu likely felt that because Jiao Jin liked Alphas, she no longer had a chance. Jiao Jin had no intention of explaining and began to walk away.
“A-Jin…”
With great effort, Cui Yu managed to grab Jiao Jin’s hand hanging by her side, but she lacked the courage to speak. She had asked so many times, and the answer never changed. Every time she heard the fact that Jiao Jin liked Alphas, her heart ached a little more. Did she really need to stab herself one more time?
Jiao Jin didn’t want to explain, nor did she want to form any further emotional connection with this woman. Even though she felt a twinge of pity for Cui Yu’s hesitant insecurity, she pulled her hand away. “Let’s go back. It’s late.”
When she woke up the next day, Jiao Jin still remembered the anomaly at the barbecue restaurant. During working hours, she went to the hospital. First, she requested a three days leave for Cui Peining, then she sought out a senior physician from the Memory Department. After describing the situation, the doctor fell into a silent, deep thought.
“What’s wrong? Have you never seen this situation before?”
“I have seen it. Usually, it’s because the patient once suffered a very deep emotional wound at that location. Once they touch upon those familiar memories, it triggers physical pain.”
“Emotional wound?”
“Yes. However, since there has only been one such case, I can’t confirm if that’s the possibility here.”
Laughing enigmatically, Jiao Jin shook her head. “I don’t think that’s it. That person isn’t the type to suffer emotional wounds.”
“You’re that certain?”
“Yes. She is cold and heartless, and she enjoys toying with others’ feelings. Naturally, she wouldn’t be the one getting hurt.”
Sensing there was a long story behind this, the doctor didn’t say more and took a sip of water. “You can try taking the patient there again to see if she can remember anything.”
“Alright. Thank you.”
Walking out of the hospital, an idea had begun to form in her mind, though it felt impossible. Jiao Jin took the teleportation point to the Interstellar Bureau and saw an unfamiliar assistant at her workstation.
Ah, right. Bai Wenmu had already transferred to the Quick Transmigration Bureau.
Since she only knew a few people, she felt a brief flash of loss but didn’t show it. Jiao Jin smiled. “Hello, I’ll be troubling you from now on.”
The assistant was equally stiff. She bowed. “No, no, it’s no trouble at all. I’m here to learn. I hope Deputy Director Jiao won’t hesitate to guide me.”
Jiao Jin sat at her desk with a frown, propping her chin on her hand. She pressed the isolation shield button, something she usually never used to ensure she was in an independent space. She rubbed her cheeks in distress, the hypothesis in her mind simply wouldn’t go away.
That barbecue restaurant… she had only ever gone there with Jiao Ran. And during her relationship with Cui Yu, she had never revealed the existence of this younger sister. Could it be that the woman’s pain was because she had once seen Jiao Jin being intimate with her sister there?
Could it be that after the breakup, she actually… couldn’t let go of her?
Once this thought appeared, perhaps because her heart desperately wanted it to be true. Jiao Jin found it increasingly logical. She even felt a faint, hidden joy.
The moment the corners of her mouth began to curl up, she quickly patted her head to sober herself up. She sighed, realizing that regardless of whether the theory was true, there was no point in agonizing over it now.
After all, the fact that Cui Yu had toyed with her feelings was real.
Even if she had lost her memory now, become cute, and had eyes only for her… she was still Cui Yu. That wicked, arrogant, and hateful woman.
Yet, she had almost fallen into the same trap again, nearly signing her name to a confession under a sweet lie. Jiao Jin closed her eyes, repeating the warnings she always gave herself, trying to pull back her swaying heart.
When she woke up, she knew she was alone in the quiet space. In truth, she hadn’t slept well the night before. Jiao Jin’s voice saying she only liked Alphas kept echoing in her head. Every time she heard it, it felt like a knife stabbing into her heart. Every breath Cui Yu took tasted like the metallic tang of blood. She opened her moist eyes from the nightmare.
Her body felt weak. The chip implanted in her wrist popped up a screen, showing it was nearly noon. Cui Yu struggled out of bed but still had no appetite.
Perhaps Jiao Jin was right; without her there, she truly had no desire to eat. Even living felt like mere instinct.
She knew that being this dependent on someone was wrong, but it was as if she had been hypnotized. Once Jiao Jin was gone, she lost all motivation to act. Cui Yu went to the bathroom to check her reflection, her cheeks were pale, her lips were dry and peeling, and her complexion was so faint she looked like she might collapse at any moment.
Not wanting to appear fragile, exhausted, or unattractive in front of Jiao Jin, Cui Yu raised her thin arms and splashed her face with ice cold water. Her color finally improved slightly.
Just then, the sound of a key turning in the lock came from the door. Instinctively tensed, her body stiffened and she trembled slightly as she looked toward the entrance.
The person who entered was very familiar. Cui Yu relaxed, and a smile instinctively spread across her lips. “A-Jin, why are you back at noon?”
Not wanting to admit she had guessed the woman likely wouldn’t eat on her own, Jiao Jin kept her expression cold. “You know it’s noon. Have you eaten?”
“Not… not yet…”
Even being looked at with that calm gaze made a chill pierce through her marrow. Cui Yu gripped the hem of her pajamas, her voice trembling. “I didn’t mean not to eat. I really just have no appetite.”
“No appetite again? Because I’m not here? What if I die, will you follow me to the grave?”
“Don’t say such things.”
Worry instantly filled her eyes. Perhaps urgency sparked a flame of courage in Cui Yu, as she reached out to cover Jiao Jin’s mouth. “It’s fine if you talk about me, but why would you curse yourself?”
Her lips touched the slightly cool fingertips. To be honest, the contact was a bit ambiguous. Jiao Jin stepped back two paces, her brows knitting together. “Who told you to touch me? You’re an Omega now, how can you have such contact with an Alpha?”
Perhaps out of spite, Cui Yu lifted her head, her eyes rimmed with red. “Don’t you like Alphas? What does it matter if I touch you?”
Even though those words had come from her own mouth, they turned back to wound her. Cui Yu’s eyes grew wetter, looking aggrieved yet stubborn.
The fact that she liked Alphas was something Jiao Jin had indeed brought up, but that didn’t seem to contradict the rule that Alphas and Omegas shouldn’t have casual contact, did it?
Jiao Jin gave a cold smile and said, “It won’t do anything to me, but what about you? What if my Alpha instincts kick in and I mark you? What will you do then?”
As a Deputy Director, her control over her pheromones was excellent. Jiao Jin knew she wouldn’t lose control, she only said this to warn Cui Yu.
However, Cui Yu was bolder than she imagined. The woman kept her head held high, her voice shaking. “Who’s afraid? I’m afraid you won’t mark me!”
“Cui Yu, you are an Omega now. Do you realize that once you are marked, unless you undergo a mark-removal surgery, you will be influenced by that person’s pheromones for the rest of your life?”
Seeing that the stubbornness in her eyes hadn’t faded, Jiao Jin crossed her arms, her voice turning serious. “Even now, the success rate of mark removal surgery is only 10%. Otherwise, you’ll die on the operating table. Cui Yu, this isn’t something to joke about.”
But it seemed she truly realized this was a good method. Cui Yu grabbed Jiao Jin’s hand and said tentatively, “Aren’t you worried that I’ll loathe you once I regain my memory? Then… then mark me, okay? That way, you won’t have to worry anymore.”
