- Chapter 13 - Have We Reconciled?
After having lunch with Jiao Ran, Jiao Jin received a phone call from Bai Wenmu. “Deputy Chief, can you come to the Interstellar Bureau for a moment?”
“What’s wrong?”
“I… I want to resign.”
The line went dead immediately after. Since taking office, Jiao Jin had worked with this assistant for a year; to be honest, she was somewhat reluctant to see her go. Thus, she hurried to the Interstellar Bureau.
Standing beside her workstation was a visibly constrained Bai Wenmu. Jiao Jin weighed her words carefully and asked, “Why the sudden thought of resigning?”
A complex gaze fell upon Jiao Jin’s concerned, peach-blossom eyes. Bai Wenmu lowered her head, swallowing all her bitterness. “I feel like this job isn’t quite right for me anymore. I want to transfer to the Quick Transmigration Bureau.”
“I won’t stop you, of course. It’s just… didn’t you say before that you worked hard for over three years to get this position? Why give it up now?”
After thinking for a moment, Jiao Jin came up with a possibility. “Is it because being an assistant all the time feels meaningless? I’m sorry, I felt so comfortable working with you that I never suggested a promotion to the Director.”
“It’s not that.”
Bai Wenmu looked up quickly. In truth, she had no great ambitions for promotions or raises. She took a deep breath. “Deputy Chief, Cui Peining came by just now. She implied… that you and Cui Yu have reconciled. Is that true?”
“What on earth?”
Not quite grasping her meaning, Jiao Jin asked further, “What did she come here for? And how do you know Cui Peining? More importantly, how do you know Cui Yu and I used to date?”
“Deputy Chief, I am your junior from school. I was your student back when you were an instructor, though you had likely just gone through a breakup then and weren’t in the mood to notice me.”
Is the world really this small?
“Furthermore, I worked hard for over three years just to get close to you. Now that I’ve finally reached your side, you’ve gone and…”
Bai Wenmu’s meaning was clear without being spoken aloud. Jiao Jin hadn’t realized she harbored these feelings at all and even felt a twinge of guilt for having inadvertently wasted the girl’s time. She uncomfortably rubbed the back of her neck. “Wenmu, I’m sorry. I… I truly didn’t notice.”
“You don’t need to apologize. It was my choice to engage in a one sided love anyway. You simply gave me a beautiful fantasy.”
She appeared quite easygoing, but no one knew the tartness and tears she had hidden after Cui Peining’s outburst. Bai Wenmu gave a candid smile. “Deputy Chief, you must stay with Cui Yu properly this time. Don’t become so despondent like you did after the last breakup.”
“Wait!” Only now did Jiao Jin realize they had strayed from the main topic. She asked hurriedly, “What did Cui Peining come here to do? Why would you think Cui Yu and I have reconciled?”
“She found your workstation, and I happened to be here. She told me to tell you when you arrived that if you dare to be unfaithful again or make her sister cry, she’ll find a time to cut out your… gland.”
“Me? Unfaithful? What kind of madness has possessed her now?”
Jiao Jin finished her curse only to see the disappointment flickering in Bai Wenmu’s lowered eyes. Although she didn’t intend to explain herself in front of someone who liked her, the thought of being misunderstood as being back with Cui Yu made her skin crawl. She cleared her throat. “Wenmu, you’ve truly misunderstood. I haven’t reconciled with Cui Yu. It’s just that she’s had an accident and has temporarily applied for a protection order.”
In an instant, Bai Wenmu’s round, rabbit-like eyes lit up. “Really?”
“It’s true.”
“Then… then I…”
“However, Wenmu, I still think you’re suited for work at the Quick Transmigration Bureau. It’s more active there, and you can experience various lives. Have you submitted your resignation? I can approve it right now.”
Those words completely extinguished the spark of hope that had just been lit in Bai Wenmu. Jiao Jin slowly clenched her fists behind her back, telling herself not to soften her heart. This person’s persistence was different from the usual confessors who fell for her face or ability at first sight, she had to be more ruthless.
“Fine. I’ll submit it immediately.”
Having settled one matter, Jiao Jin thought of Cui Peining, who had gone to her workplace to spread “rumors.” Since that woman couldn’t go to the hospital without her work card, she was bound to be at the three bedrooms apartment. Cold faced, Jiao Jin chose to pay for a teleportation point to return home, eager to ask what kind of nonsense she was spewing.
Unfaithful? Who exactly is being unfaithful? How can someone be so bold as to play the victim while being the culprit?
The apartment was located downtown, very close to the teleportation point, she was back in a matter of seconds. Jiao Jin opened the door and, as expected, saw the two sisters sitting upright in the living room, waiting for her.
“Hey! Who is that vixen?”
Cui Peining was the first to speak, standing up aggressively.
“What vixen? What’s wrong with you today? Can’t a doctor treat her own insanity?”
“Jiao Jin! Don’t you dare play….”
Before she could finish the word “innocent,” Cui Peining watched as her currently fragile and easily bullied sister stood up of her own accord, took Jiao Jin’s hand, and led her into the second bedroom. The latter didn’t struggle, seemingly unwilling to waste another word on Peining.
Heh, who wants to talk to her anyway?
Suddenly feeling like her efforts were superfluous, Cui Peining stomped back to the master bedroom, opened the projection on her wrist, and began ordering a mountain of snacks on the virtual screen.
Jiao Jin followed Cui Yu into the bedroom without hesitation. After all, this “pitiful little thing” had a much better attitude than the second Miss outside and was more likely to explain things clearly. Facing Cui Peining only made Jiao Jin want to swear. She leaned against the wall with her arms crossed, waiting for the woman, who now had her head bowed, to speak.
“A-Jin, who did you go to see today? That person… is the owner of the number you had Peining transfer money to.”
Her voice, feigning calmness, quickly began to tremble. Cui Yu clenched her fists; the sourness in her heart made her throat ache. “Is… is she an Alpha?”
Having reached this point, she still didn’t dare ask directly. The question “What is your relationship?” was disguised as her current inquiry, veiled and full of her insecurity.
Only then did Jiao Jin realize the sisters were talking about her own younger sister. She found it so ridiculous that she actually laughed. “So, because of that, Cui Peining went to the Interstellar Bureau to cause a scene? She told my assistant to warn me that if I’m unfaithful again, she’ll cut out my gland?”
“I’m sorry. I… I tried to stop Peining, but I couldn’t.”
“What? It wasn’t something you two sisters discussed together?”
“I… forget it. Peining did it for my sake. I’m sorry.”
Seeing this usually haughty woman constantly bowing her head in apology, looking so wronged and pitiful, Jiao Jin felt a bit uncomfortable. “Why do you keep apologizing? It’s not like I’m scolding you.”
“I… I’m just afraid you’ll hate me…”
Jiao Jin caught the glint of tears in her eyes, she looked utterly heart-wrenching and endearing. Jiao Jin sighed. “I don’t hate you. But Cui Peining can’t go making a scene at my workplace. Luckily, only my assistant knows about this. Your kidnapping case isn’t over yet, we can’t let others know you’re here with me.”
“Are you… worried about me?”
The hesitant words paired with an expectant expression reminded Jiao Jin of a little white cat she had raised as a child, soft but prideful, wanting to be petted but only pacing nearby, occasionally glancing over with a mix of trepidation and hope.
She smiled helplessly, as if moved by the memory. Jiao Jin reached out and patted Cui Yu’s head. “Actually, you’ve become a lot cuter since you lost your memory.”
Accepting the gesture readily, Cui Yu obediently lifted her head to allow more contact, making the sensation clearer. She bit her lower lip, her eyes shimmering with shyness. “Then… just like the current me, okay?”
