- Chapter 15 - Things are Different Now? Reminiscing About the Past
“It is nothing, Brother. I just thought of our past together.” Su Jingyang spoke with a smile, looking at Chu Jingtian, whose refined beauty made him appear almost otherworldly.
Chu Jingtian let out a chuckle at Su Jingyang’s words. “You brat, why are you always dwelling on the past? The past is already over. Why keep thinking about it? Why not focus on the present?”
What is gone is gone. Why stay obsessed with things that have already happened? To constantly look back felt ridiculous to him; it was better to keep moving forward and look toward the future. Staying immersed in the past was simply too tragic.
Su Jingyang smiled as he listened to Chu Jingtian, slowly sharing those beautiful memories.
“Brother, sometimes the most beautiful memories of the past are our true foundation. When we recall the past now, especially when facing hardships, we can remember the good times.” Su Jingyang spoke with a radiant smile, laying his heart bare.
Even if they encountered miserable situations now, as long as they kept a smile on their faces, the bitterness would not feel so overwhelming. If one could keep a balanced mindset, summarizing and reflecting on past events helped one endure the lonely years abroad.
When Su Jingyang first went overseas, life had been very difficult, and he hadn’t known how he would survive. But whenever he reached a breaking point, he would think of how well his brother had treated him, and he would stabilize himself. As long as his brother was waiting for him in their hometown, his heart felt happy and at peace.
“Hahaha, I did not expect you to return from abroad speaking with such profound meaning.” Chu Jingtian could not help but laugh.
Looking at Su Jingyang and hearing such insightful words made him feel a mix of helplessness and pride. When they spent time together in the past, the boy would never have said anything so deep. Now, looking at Su Jingyang, he truly felt the young man had grown up. He was no longer just a child; he was an adult whose words were genuinely satisfying.
Chu Jingtian suddenly remembered something and looked at Su Jingyang with confusion. “Did you drive here today?”
Su Jingyang shook his head.
Seeing him shake his head, Chu Jingtian smiled. He led Su Jingyang to his car and nudged him into the passenger seat. “Since you did not drive, come with me in my car. If you are worried about my driving, you can…”
“It is fine.”
Su Jingyang seemed to know what Chu Jingtian was going to say and cut him off directly.
Chu Jingtian watched Su Jingyang stop him mid-sentence and gave a helpless smile. He hadn’t expected the younger man to interrupt him so decisively. However, it did not matter much. Chu Jingtian climbed into the driver’s seat and looked at Su Jingyang sitting beside him.
This reminded him of when he first got his driver’s license. Back then, he always liked having Su Jingyang in the car with him. Whenever Su Jingyang sat there, he felt a profound sense of security. He did not know why, but Su Jingyang’s presence always gave him great confidence. Having him there felt comfortable and right.
Sometimes, Su Jingyang’s presence could feel like a form of pressure, but right now, it only brought back sweet memories. There were so many stories from their past to trace. Back when he was learning to drive, he loved having Su Jingyang sit with him, guiding him on the routes. Thinking of these things, Chu Jingtian’s lips curved into a smile as he dwelled on those happy times.
The past had its share of joy. Even though some memories were bitter compared to the sweetness of the present, standing back up on his own feet made those past hardships feel manageable.
As Chu Jingtian started the car, the interior became very quiet. The silence between them felt slightly awkward. Realizing the atmosphere was becoming tense, Chu Jingtian looked at Su Jingyang and broke the ice.
“How have you been these past few years abroad?” Chu Jingtian asked. He truly wanted to know how Su Jingyang had fared during all those years in a foreign country.
Su Jingyang gave a helpless smile and let out a soft breath. “I was fine abroad.”
During those years, he had relied entirely on the words Chu Jingtian had once said to him to endure the loneliness. If not for those words ringing in his ears, he never could have survived so many years overseas alone. For Chu Jingtian, those past conversations might have been simple, but for Su Jingyang, they were everything. Now, seeing that his brother had finally split from that man, Su Jingyang felt that everything was for the best.
Chu Jingtian nodded with a smile, feeling happy to hear that Su Jingyang had done well. Back when he was married to Zhou Nian, he hadn’t paid enough attention to these things. Hearing that his younger brother had been successful abroad made him feel relieved.
“As long as you were happy abroad, that is enough for me. If you are ever unhappy, you must tell me. Now that you are back in the country, I will take you to travel and visit various places whenever I have free time.”
Chu Jingtian kept his eyes on the road, a gentle smile appearing on his face. Su Jingyang listened, and though he did not show much emotion outwardly, his heart was filled with joy.
Although they were not sure what else to discuss regarding the current road conditions, the time spent together was precious to them both. As they traveled, the familiarity between them grew, and they were no longer as distant as they had been upon their first reunion.
Initially, they might have felt some discomfort or struggled to express their feelings. But now that their emotions had stabilized, they were no longer lost in messy thoughts. They could simply observe their surroundings and enjoy each other’s company without the previous awkwardness.
Chu Jingtian drove quickly and soon arrived at the villa entrance. He pulled the car into the courtyard and parked. Stepping out, he looked at Su Jingyang with a smile. “Thank you for worrying about me, you brat. Now go home and get some rest. You clearly haven’t slept well since you came looking for me.”
Su Jingyang looked at Chu Jingtian, smiled, nodded, and turned to leave.
Chu Jingtian watched his retreating back, and his eyes grew moist while his lips remained pressed in a thin line. Seeing this younger brother appear at his doorstep always stirred something in his heart. In the past, when he studied too late, it was always this brother who would get up, walk to his side, and pull him away from his books. Seeing the exhaustion in Chu Jingtian’s eyes, the boy would look at him with an aggrieved expression and tell him to rest.
Thinking of his brother’s past words, Chu Jingtian’s smile widened. He had returned to the feelings of the past much faster than he had expected. Since he had found that old rhythm again, he decided to let go of the pain and focus only on the beautiful memories.
Chu Jingtian pushed the messy thoughts aside and walked into the house. He noticed the lights were still on. Looking toward the sofa, he saw his parents still sitting there, waiting for him.
He did not know what to say. His eyes grew misty.
“Mom, Dad.” His voice was tinged with bitterness and regret.
Seeing them waiting for him made his heart ache. For all the years he was married to Zhou Nian, he was always the one waiting for Zhou Nian to return, wondering when he would be home. Yet, from the very moment they married, Zhou Nian’s true colors had been revealed.
