- The Aloof Little Puppy Is Super Obedient
- Chapter 14 - It’s All for Your Own Good, I Care About You.
Su Jingyang stared at his phone in shock as the line went dead. Hearing the busy signal, he couldn’t help but sigh. Chu Jingtian was simply too stubborn, pushing himself to the brink for work. Thinking of how hard Chu Jingtian was fighting to reclaim his life made Su Jingyang’s heart ache.
Back when they were younger, Chu Jingtian had never been this exhausted. Seeing him work so tirelessly after escaping that failed relationship filled Su Jingyang with a mix of admiration and worry. He let out a long breath and grabbed his coat.
The only sound in the room was the rhythmic pitter-patter of typing on a keyboard. Chu Jingtian sat on the sofa, focused on the documents spread before him. A small smile played on his lips. As long as he finished these files, he could finally go home and get some proper rest. He was determined to catch up on the years of progress he had missed.
He had just opened a new folder when a knock sounded at the door. Chu Jingtian frowned and called for the person to enter. A man walked in wearing casual clothes with a heavy padded jacket thrown over his shoulders. At first, the light was too dim to see clearly, but as the man approached, Chu Jingtian realized it was Su Jingyang!
Chu Jingtian’s eyes flared with a mix of fatigue and annoyance. “What are you doing here in the middle of the night? Do you have any idea how dark and dangerous it is to come here at this hour? It is past midnight! I told you over the phone to go to sleep and rest!”
Chu Jingtian fell into his old habit of mothering the younger man, his voice laced with concern. He was genuinely exasperated. He was staying up late for work, but why was Su Jingyang here?
Su Jingyang walked over and sat across from him, his expression firm. “You have a lot of nerve lecturing me. You are the one working yourself to the bone. Do you have any idea what this is doing to your health?”
Su Jingyang’s heart ached. He looked at the mountain of work. Normally, this amount of paperwork would take three or four days to process, yet the pile that had been there this morning was now significantly smaller.
“I don’t care about anything else right now. I just want to ask you one thing: are you planning to stay here until every single one of these is finished?”
Chu Jingtian looked at the files and smiled. “Of course. Once they are done, I can rest easy knowing I am caught up. But you, showing up here so late is very intrusive. You should be at home sleeping.”
“You are not on overseas time anymore; your internal clock should be adjusted. If you keep staying up, it will ruin your health. I have been out of the workforce for so many years; I have to work twice as hard to get back up to speed.”
Chu Jingtian knew he couldn’t win an argument against Su Jingyang when the boy was this determined. Su Jingyang’s persistence was legendary, and once he set his mind on something, he wouldn’t budge.
“I know,” Su Jingyang replied, his voice softening. “But I woke up and saw your car wasn’t back. I was worried about you. I didn’t expect you to actually be pulling an all-nighter at the office.”
Chu Jingtian looked at Su Jingyang’s clean, youthful face and felt a wave of helplessness. It was strange how the little brother he had raised was now the one bossing him around.
“Fine, fine! I will listen to you. I am stopping now.”
He knew that if he continued, Su Jingyang would just sit there and watch him all night. The thought of being supervised like a child was a bit daunting. He packed his things, organized the remaining files, and walked out of the office with Su Jingyang.
As they walked, Su Jingyang’s lips curved into a satisfied smile. “Brother Jingtian, you have to be more careful in the future. Don’t sacrifice your health for work. You have to consider your physical limits. When you are tired, you have to rest. You can’t just ignore it.”
Su Jingyang continued his lecture as they walked to the parking lot. Chu Jingtian listened to the advice with a helpless smile. He didn’t want to argue; he knew Su Jingyang was right, even if it was annoying to hear. He just swallowed his retorts and enjoyed the cool night air.
The two of them walked along a small path under the moonlight. They shared a comfortable silence, their eyes reflecting the silver glow. It felt like a scene from their childhood. Back then, they would hold hands and walk to the local convenience store to buy their favorite snacks and share them happily.
“I can’t believe how much you’ve grown,” Chu Jingtian remarked. “One moment you are the boy leaving for school abroad, and the next you are back and acting all grown up.”
He felt a sense of wonder at how fast time had passed. One moment life felt slow and tedious, and the next, years had vanished. He looked at the young man beside him. Su Jingyang had grown into a remarkably handsome man, with refined features and a gentle look in his almond eyes.
“When you were little, I was the one looking after you. Now that you’re grown, the roles have reversed,” Chu Jingtian teased, patting Su Jingyang on the back.
Su Jingyang smiled, his eyes turning reflective. “Haha, I will never forget how you used to chase me with a stick to make me study, telling me that in the future, I would have to…”
Su Jingyang’s voice trailed off as he remembered a specific moment under a cherry blossom tree.
He saw a little boy in denim overalls with dimples and a bit of baby fat, running toward an older boy who was reading a book.
“Brother!”
The older boy had looked up and caught the little boy in his arms with a wide smile.
“Brother, why do my parents always say that no one will want to marry me when I grow up? Is it true?” The little boy’s eyes had filled with tears.
The older boy had laughed. “How could they say that? If our little treasure can’t find anyone, then I’ll marry you, okay?”
“Hey! Hey!” Chu Jingtian’s voice snapped Su Jingyang back to reality. “What are you dazing off for?”
Su Jingyang blinked, looking a bit lost. Chu Jingtian looked up, catching the lingering tenderness and something else in Su Jingyang’s eyes.
Wait, no!
Chu Jingtian shook his head quickly, tossing those messy thoughts to the back of his mind.
