- Chapter 12 - If You’re Stuck in the Past, Then You’re Just an Old Fossil
“Zhou Nian, take these documents back and look them over properly before submitting them to our company again. If your firm is truly sincere about cooperating with us, our company will let bygones be bygones and won’t say anything more.”
Chu Jingtian laid the issues out plainly. He truly couldn’t fathom where Zhou Nian got the nerve to alter the documents in such a way. He didn’t understand what Zhou Nian was thinking; the fact that his company was willing to work with Zhou Nian’s at all was already generous. He couldn’t grasp why Zhou Nian was setting his demands so high.
If this had been his old temper, he would have pointed out every flaw and been incredibly nitpicky. But considering the current professional landscape, he suppressed his irritation and merely lowered his expectations for them.
Sitting across from him, Zhou Nian listened with disbelief. He snatched the documents back and glared at Chu Jingtian with rising anger.
“Look at these files properly! How could there be any problems? I prepared these myself, and they are perfect. They couldn’t possibly be as bad as you say.”
Zhou Nian was genuinely fuming. He didn’t know how to handle his emotions. He felt he had arranged everything perfectly, yet the person in front of him was still being fastidious. He didn’t see any issue with the content at all.
Hearing that Zhou Nian still didn’t grasp the problem, Chu Jingtian let out a sigh and clenched his hands.
“You are being truly ridiculous. You don’t understand the importance of this at all. You think this is just a simple partnership, nothing major.”
“But do you realize that without our company, yours wouldn’t even have survived until now? And yet, you still want to negotiate so many terms with me. Do you really think our company will agree to these conditions?”
The only reason this firm had partnered with Zhou Nian in the first place was that Chu Jingtian and Zhou Nian were together at the time. Zhang Yang, out of concern for Chu Jingtian, had agreed to the collaboration. No one expected Zhou Nian’s company to eventually put forward such unreasonable demands.
Faced with these demands now, Chu Jingtian didn’t know what to say. He could only swallow his anger, though his frustration simmered beneath the surface. He couldn’t understand what kind of heart these people possessed.
“You… you’re clearly letting personal life affect your judgment. You just won’t admit it,” Zhou Nian said, resorting to underhanded accusations since his open arguments weren’t working.
Chu Jingtian found this truly laughable. “Don’t you find your words ridiculous? I told you from the start that I wouldn’t bring my private feelings into this. When I speak to you like this, it’s with genuine professional emotion.”
“If I were actually letting my personal feelings take over, then let me tell you clearly: with a proposal like yours even attempting to catch my eye, you’re being absolutely pathetic.”
Chu Jingtian looked at the man’s plan with nothing but contempt. He couldn’t understand where Zhou Nian got the courage to present this to him. Furthermore, he had already made his feelings very clear, yet Zhou Nian persisted with his unreasonable demands.
“From now on, the words I say to you are based on my true professional opinion. Sometimes, you really need to take a good look at yourself.”
Chu Jingtian knew this proposal didn’t even deserve a glance from their company. If not for their long-standing relationship and the difficulty of terminating the contract immediately, he wouldn’t even be entertaining this. Even if they were to cancel the partnership, it would take several months; for now, he was simply treating this as a business interaction where they were the party demanding revisions.
He was irritated by the sheer gall of these people. Sometimes, thinking about the schemes they used made his chest feel tight. It was absurd. Now they were accusing him of being personal. If he were actually being personal, he would only have one thing to say.
It was pathetic that these people, lacking sufficient talent, resorted to slandering others. He had explained the situation clearly, but they refused to believe him. If Chu Jingtian were to speak the absolute truth, he could go on forever, but he didn’t want to waste any more time on this scumbag. He simply sat there, staring coldly at Zhou Nian.
Zhou Nian glanced at the few people sitting beside him, signaling them to leave. Soon, only Chu Jingtian and Zhou Nian remained in the room.
“Heh, you just don’t want to admit it in front of others. You’re definitely using some tactics, just not helping me openly. If you really wanted to help, you’d just give me these approvals. Why play hard to get?”
“Are you using these moves just to get me to sit down and talk to you privately? Well, I’m sitting here now. Shouldn’t you give us these slots?”
Zhou Nian spoke with extreme confidence. Chu Jingtian was stunned by his arrogance; he never expected Zhou Nian to be so delusional.
“First of all, let me state clearly: I am a professional. I love my life and my work. Since we have split up, I won’t dwell on the past—your cheating and the way you wronged me.”
“Secondly, this is my working time. I don’t have time to play the emotional card with you. I’ve made myself very clear. What I’ve said to you is based on company standards. If you really want to ask about this, then fix your documents first. There are clear issues in these files, yet you’ve repeatedly demanded that your company takes the lion’s share of the profit.”
“Did you ever consider that when your company was at its most difficult, it was our company that funded and helped you? And now you want to pull this…”
Chu Jingtian looked at Zhou Nian with a mocking gaze. He couldn’t understand why the man would bring up private feelings now. He had already stated he wouldn’t entangle himself with them, but if Zhou Nian insisted on pestering him, he wouldn’t show any mercy. He had made everything plain, yet these people insisted on provoking his anger.
“Sometimes I just don’t understand you. Why can’t you grasp this? I’ve already told you the entire situation.” Chu Jingtian crossed his legs, his demeanor shifting. He was no longer showing any of the restraint he had earlier. With a professional smile, he rapidly pointed out the flaws in the documents.
After laying out the content of the files and stating his company’s requirements, he immediately asked Zhou Nian to leave. He had no energy left to waste on him. He had already told Zhou Nian he wouldn’t forgive easily; he would use his means to slowly cut off these people’s interests.
Since Zhou Nian didn’t want to save face, Chu Jingtian didn’t mind being ruthless. He could enjoy a bit of professional revenge. Seeing Zhou Nian’s face turn as grim as a mountain, Chu Jingtian let out a sigh, walked over, and patted his shoulder.
“Sometimes, you need to weigh your own worth. Evaluate whether you even deserve this project. Giving it to you at all was already giving you enough face.” Chu Jingtian chuckled. “If you still want to cooperate with our company, I suggest you work on improving your own strength.”
“In the future, we might not necessarily choose to work with your factory. If you don’t have a sense of crisis now, I’d like to see how your factory operates once you lose our support.”
Chu Jingtian wasn’t lying; it was the absolute truth. Without the backing of his company, Zhou Nian wouldn’t be able to accomplish any of this. Zhou Nian’s pride was visibly wounded, but he still couldn’t resist a parting shot.
“What’s the use of saying all this now? You spent years chasing after me. Since you’re talking like this now, why can’t you just let the past be the past?”
Chu Jingtian didn’t feel the old sadness or pain anymore. He simply smirked and turned his head. The sunlight fell across his face, making him look vibrant and full of life.
“I can give you a very clear answer: everything I am facing now is my own choice. I like my life this way, and I don’t need anyone else to obsess over it.”
“Furthermore, if you’re going to stay stuck in the past, then you’re just someone with an old-fashioned mind. If you want to be a fossil, stay in the past; it has nothing to do with me.”
