- Chapter 11 - Business is Business! Personal is Personal!
Zhang Yang was stunned by Chu Jingtian’s words. He hadn’t expected Chu Jingtian to be so firm, and a smile gradually spread across his face.
“I didn’t expect you to take this so seriously now,” Zhang Yang said, his eyes gleaming with approval.
Chu Jingtian laughed along. “Haha, what is there to say? I just need to focus everything on my career.” He spoke with absolute certainty; he would not let his past affect his progress. His current dream was simply to manage his life well and not let these matters dampen his spirits. With this mindset, he felt the tension in his chest slowly dissolve.
Zhang Yang watched Chu Jingtian’s persistent expression and sighed. “Haha, I’ll admit, you’ve got what it takes!” After saying that, he turned and left.
As Zhang Yang’s back disappeared, Chu Jingtian let out a long sigh. He didn’t know how to voice his feelings, so he simply steadied his emotions. He remembered how much he had sacrificed for a supposed “devotion,” and it brought a sharp pang to his heart. Why had he given up so much for something so laughable? If he hadn’t made those sacrifices back then, he wouldn’t be where he was now.
He focused on stabilizing his mood, refusing to dwell on the messy past. He straightened his things and returned to his tasks. Back in his office, Chu Jingtian felt like a new man. He immersed himself in work to prepare for the afternoon’s events. He had a lot to handle, but he wasn’t afraid. As long as he kept a cool head, nothing could shake him.
Time flew by, and soon it was afternoon.
As the meeting approached, Chu Jingtian felt a flicker of nervousness. After all, they had just divorced, and meeting again so soon felt somewhat absurd. He took a deep breath to calm his nerves. It was just a divorce, just a breakup. What was the big deal? He had faced more embarrassing situations than this without flinching; there was no reason to be anxious now.
Once he found his internal balance, he walked into the conference room. As soon as he entered, he heard a familiar voice. He looked toward the sofa and saw Zhou Nian sitting there.
Seeing Zhou Nian, Chu Jingtian’s face remained void of emotion. He simply observed his “ex-husband.” Zhou Nian noticed him as well, and his brow furrowed immediately.
“Why are you here? Are you following me?” Zhou Nian asked angrily, his eyes filled with disdain and fury. He couldn’t fathom why Chu Jingtian would show up here.
Chu Jingtian’s hands tightened instinctively. “Heh, we’re here to discuss a partnership. Why are you so defensive? Is it a case of enemies meeting and seeing red?” He placed the blame squarely on Zhou Nian.
Zhou Nian’s frown deepened. “What do you mean by that? Are you the one feeling guilty now?”
“I haven’t said anything. If you want to cooperate, we can talk. If not, I’ll leave. I wouldn’t want to get in the way of the ‘Great CEO Zhou’.”
Chu Jingtian found Zhou Nian’s arrogance ridiculous. He had once missed the man, but now those feelings were gone, replaced only by cold indifference. He couldn’t believe the nerve of the man standing before him. It was laughable, and he didn’t even know where to begin expressing his contempt. He just wanted to clear the air and move on from this nonsense.
Looking at Zhou Nian, Chu Jingtian was reminded of the years of mistreatment he had endured in that household. He had never had a good day there. Thinking of the hardships he had faced, he clenched his fists. Though the past was over, the memories had taken root in his heart and weren’t easily hidden.
Those scars were indelible, but this was a professional setting. He refused to let personal baggage bleed into his work. With a serious expression, he sat down and looked at Zhou Nian across the table.
Zhou Nian, however, seemed flustered. Seeing Chu Jingtian sitting opposite him made him uneasy. His company was smaller than Chu Jingtian’s, and he feared Chu Jingtian would let personal grudges influence the deal.
“You and I have so much personal history. How can I be sure you won’t use this business deal to pull some tricks on our company?” Zhou Nian asked, and his subordinates nodded in agreement, whispering among themselves.
Chu Jingtian’s brow furrowed in frustration. “I don’t know what’s going on in your heads, but let me be clear: I am being fair and professional. I won’t let personal feelings dictate my interest in this deal.”
He sat back, crossed his legs, and placed the files on the table. He looked at the group with a professional smile. “For instance, if I really wanted to give you trouble, I wouldn’t be sitting here calmly. I would have found ways to pick apart your proposal and make you rewrite the entire scheme before even granting you an audience.”
He laid out the reality of the situation. If he wanted to be difficult, he wouldn’t be making things this easy for them. He didn’t know what these people were thinking. He took a breath, trying to keep his irritation from affecting his mood. It was exhausting dealing with such narrow-mindedness.
“The way you’re all stalling makes me wonder if you’re actually serious about this partnership.” Chu Jingtian smirked, looking at the other side of the table with a questioning gaze.
The people sitting across from him went silent. Zhou Nian, sitting in the center, looked dark with anger. Hearing Chu Jingtian’s words made him fume, but he forced himself to stay calm and pushed the documents forward.
As Chu Jingtian began reviewing the files, his expression hardened halfway through. He pointed to a specific section. “Wait a moment. Look at this loophole. Why is our company…?” He was genuinely displeased. His company was the primary stakeholder; there was no reason for Zhou Nian’s firm to take such a large share.
Zhou Nian looked at him with pride. “Since you’re contracting this work to us, our company will ensure everything is done perfectly. Therefore, we expect to maximize our profits.”
He sat up straight, a mocking smile on his lips. “We can’t afford to take a loss just to let your people earn more.”
Chu Jingtian slammed the documents onto the table and pushed them back toward him. “If this is your attitude, our company will not cooperate with you.” He paused, then added, “This isn’t about our personal history now. You are acting against the best interests of your own company.”
He was fuming. Any lingering trace of affection he had for Zhou Nian was officially dead. There was no more love, no more secret crush. In the professional world, he would show no mercy to anyone.
“With you speaking to me like this, I don’t even know how to continue. I won’t be giving you any special treatment because of our past.”
Chu Jingtian then began to sharply point out every unreasonable detail in the proposal.
