- Chapter 10 - He Was the One in the Wrong, Why Should I Feel Guilty?
At this moment, Su Jingyang could hardly contain his excitement. Seeing Chu Jingtian so happy made his heart race. When you’ve loved someone for years, seeing them enjoy a meal you personally prepared is enough to make anyone feel an overwhelming sense of fulfillment. As long as Chu Jingtian was satisfied, Su Jingyang felt that everything was worth it.
However, as Chu Jingtian was heartily eating, a loud gurgle came from Su Jingyang’s stomach. Hearing this, Chu Jingtian’s brow furrowed.
“Is that your stomach growling? Were you lying to me? Did you skip your own lunch?” Chu Jingtian looked at him sternly.
He generally disliked being indebted to others. Seeing Su Jingyang bring him such a feast while neglecting his own meal made Chu Jingtian feel a surge of frustration. He didn’t know what to do with this younger brother sometimes. Su Jingyang was so generous toward him, yet so “stingy” when it came to taking care of himself.
Chu Jingtian sighed, stood up, and grabbed his meal card. He pulled Su Jingyang toward the door. “If you haven’t eaten, I can’t finish this food in good conscience. Come with me to the cafeteria; I’m getting you a meal.”
Chu Jingtian spoke with a firm authority that left no room for argument. Su Jingyang was pleasantly surprised, though a bit worried. He felt guilty that Chu Jingtian was stepping away from his mountain of work just to take him to eat.
“Brother, you don’t have to do this. As long as you’re full, I’m fine,” Su Jingyang said, looking a bit dazed.
Seeing Chu Jingtian’s persistence, Su Jingyang felt a pang of regret. He should have eaten at home before coming over. But since he hadn’t cooked in years while abroad, he had been a bit rusty and spent a long time practicing until the dishes were perfect. Because of that, he had completely run out of time for himself. He sighed inwardly, following Chu Jingtian with his eyes fixed on him.
They reached the cafeteria quickly. Chu Jingtian made Su Jingyang sit down while he went to line up. Soon, he returned with a tray of food and set it in front of the younger man.
“You’re exactly the same as you used to be, only thinking about bringing me food and forgetting yourself. You’re an adult now; why can’t you fix this habit?” Chu Jingtian sighed, shaking his head.
Su Jingyang’s hands tightened slightly, and he pressed his lips together, unsure of what to say. “I…”
Seeing how flustered Su Jingyang looked, Chu Jingtian softened. He patted him on the back. “Eat, quickly.”
As he watched Su Jingyang eat, a smile played on Chu Jingtian’s lips. It reminded him of their shared past. They had always been so close, and he still felt a lingering sense of guilt for not spending more time with Su Jingyang before he went abroad. Back then, Su Jingyang was always by his side, yet Chu Jingtian had been too preoccupied.
“Alright, I won’t nag you anymore. I’m going to eat too; since I’m already here, I grabbed another portion.” Chu Jingtian laughed and began to eat again.
Chu Jingtian actually had a very large appetite. When he was busy, he’d forget to eat, but once he sat down, he could easily clear three bowls. Most people were surprised that someone as thin as him could eat so much. Su Jingyang, watching him eat with such gusto, felt much better. Seeing Chu Jingtian satisfied was far better than seeing the pessimistic expression he had worn recently.
“Brother Jingtian, I thought your appetite had changed. You ate so little a few days ago,” Su Jingyang remarked.
“Shh! Don’t go spreading that around. This is a secret between the two of us!” Chu Jingtian replied with a playful glint in his eyes. Su Jingyang nodded, a warm feeling spreading through his chest.
After they finished eating, Su Jingyang said his goodbyes.
Chu Jingtian took the lunch box to the sink to wash it. When he turned around, he was startled to find Zhang Yang standing right behind him.
“What are you doing sneaking up on me like that?” Chu Jingtian asked, heart racing.
Zhang Yang laughed. “Why are you so jumpy? You never used to be this easily spooked!”
Chu Jingtian let out a helpless huff. “I was just washing a dish. You suddenly appear behind me with that grin; I thought something terrible had happened.”
Seeing Chu Jingtian’s annoyance, Zhang Yang quickly apologized. He sighed and looked toward the exit. “Alright, I was just joking. By the way, who was that guy? He looks quite a bit younger than you. Could it be…?”
“Don’t start with that nonsense,” Chu Jingtian snapped. “We’re like brothers. If you keep talking like that, you’re going to create some very awkward misunderstandings.”
Zhang Yang raised his hands in surrender. He knew that if he pushed any further, Chu Jingtian would get truly defensive. “Okay, okay, I’ll drop it. But there is something serious I need to tell you. It’s about… your ex-husband. He’s the manager of the company we’re negotiating with today.”
Zhang Yang looked at Chu Jingtian with concern. “If you’re uncomfortable with this, tell me. I can handle the meeting instead.”
Chu Jingtian’s brow furrowed, and his hands clenched. He hadn’t expected to cross paths with Zhou Nian so soon in a professional setting.
“If you’re worried about me, don’t be,” Chu Jingtian said, his voice turning serious. “I’m in the professional world now. This isn’t about personal feelings. If I refuse to meet a client because of a past relationship, what kind of manager would I be?”
He looked at Zhang Yang with a mix of gratitude and exasperation. He knew his friend was just worried about his emotional state, but the concern felt unnecessary.
Zhang Yang was taken back by the sudden display of resolve. He realized that Chu Jingtian had a lot of backbone; he wasn’t going to let his past dictate his future success. He gave a thumbs up and a supportive smile. “I’m impressed. You’ve got a lot of grit, willing to take this head-on.”
In the past, Chu Jingtian was so naive and easily overwhelmed by his emotions. Seeing him able to put it all aside now was genuinely shocking to Zhang Yang.
Chu Jingtian patted Zhang Yang’s back. “You’re acting like I’m made of glass. I’ve stabilized myself because I realized something.”
“This is a workplace, not a game of house. If I let a failed relationship keep me from doing my job, then I really am as weak as people think.”
Exactly. In the business world, plenty of divorced couples have to interact. Besides, he hadn’t done anything wrong. It was that man who had failed their marriage. Why should he be the one feeling guilty or hiding away?
