- Chapter 4 - Soft to the Touch
Ever since Gu Jingxuan had that talk with him, Xu Chi’s performance during filming improved significantly. Even Director Jiang became much more pleasant toward him, often giving him extra guidance. This led many on the film crew to joke that Xu Chi was acting more like the female lead than the actual actress.
“Xu Chi.”
When Lu Qing found him, Xu Chi was hunched over his phone, scrolling through Weibo on a secret alt account. He didn’t dare follow Gu Jingxuan using his official account, so he used a private one to lurk daily and check for new updates.
“Hmm? What’s up?” Xu Chi had just been smiling at his screen, and the curve of his lips hadn’t fully faded. As he turned his head to look at Lu Qing, she froze for a moment.
Because she had been so focused on Gu Jingxuan during filming, she hadn’t really taken a good look at Xu Chi until now. Seeing him smile at her like that made her heart skip a beat.
“Oh… my family made these little sweet rice dumplings. They’re delicious. Do you want to try one?”
Lu Qing held out a small box, which released a tempting aroma.
Xu Chi secretly swallowed his saliva. He stared at the box for a few seconds but ultimately turned her down.
“I… I better not. Director Jiang already told me to watch my weight. I’m afraid if I eat this, I’ll have to live on nothing but egg whites for days.”
Xu Chi wasn’t fat by any means—in fact, he was quite thin—but his face tended to carry a bit of puffiness. After casting him, Director Jiang told him his face couldn’t look that “fleshy.” Xu Chi had spent a month eating nothing but plain boiled chicken and egg whites, forcefully shedding his baby fat.
Now, looking at Lu Qing’s snacks, his eyes were practically glowing, yet he still had to endure the pain of refusing her.
“Oh, I see…” Lu Qing lowered her eyes in disappointment. She was quite striking, possessing the kind of beauty common among top actresses in the industry.
Because Xu Chi hadn’t accepted her offering, her downcast eyes made him feel like he had committed a major crime.
“Well… maybe I could… just try one? Is that okay?” he stammered. “If I eat too many, Director Jiang will scold me.”
Upon hearing this, Lu Qing immediately beamed. She opened the box and picked up a dumpling with a small fork, intending to feed it to him herself.
Seeing the dumpling coming toward his mouth, Xu Chi quickly took it from her. “I’ll do it. Be careful not to get your hands dirty.”
Lu Qing watched happily as Xu Chi ate the dumpling and then walked away. In the distance, a camera captured the entire scene.
Before Xu Chi could even swallow the bite in his mouth, Gu Jingxuan patted him on the back from behind, making him jump.
“Gu… Brother Gu… wha are oo doin’ ere?” Xu Chi’s cheeks were puffed out like a hamster, as he still hadn’t swallowed the dumpling.
Looking at him, Gu Jingxuan felt an itch in his heart. He wanted to reach out and pinch those cheeks but was afraid of startling the kid.
“What, is this film set yours? Am I not allowed to be here?”
Gu Jingxuan had actually been sitting behind him since Lu Qing arrived; Xu Chi had just been too absorbed in his phone to notice.
Hearing Gu Jingxuan’s words, Xu Chi shook his head frantically in a panic.
“No, no, no! That’s not what I meant. I was just curious.” Xu Chi was terrified that Gu Jingxuan would misunderstand him, his face full of earnestness.
Gu Jingxuan loved watching how Xu Chi would turn bright red with nerves every time he tried to explain himself. It made him look like a red apple—fresh, juicy, and making one want to take a bite.
“I know you didn’t mean it. I was just teasing you.”
As soon as Gu Jingxuan said that, Xu Chi deflated like a popped balloon. He looked at Gu Jingxuan with a small, pouting gaze.
“Brother Gu, you’re… so annoying…” Xu Chi bit his lip and whispered.
Gu Jingxuan finally couldn’t resist. He reached out and pinched Xu Chi’s cheek.
After the pinch, he even offered a review. “It really is quite soft. It seems like your fans were telling the truth.”
Xu Chi’s breathing grew shallow, and his face instantly turned a deep crimson.
“Wh… what fans? What were they saying…?”
“Just your fans saying that since you look so cute, you must be very soft to the touch.” Gu Jingxuan didn’t feel a shred of guilt for teasing the young man. He just kept grinning at Xu Chi. “Since I hear them say it so often, I wanted to see if it was true.”
On the surface, Xu Chi looked like a shy, flustered victim of a prank, but inside, he was over the moon. Brother Gu, you can pinch me a few more times. I’m not just soft on my face!
