- Chapter 37 - The Film King Himself
When Xu Chi first said Gu Jingxuan was coming over and he needed to pick him up, Lin Tao didn’t think much of it. But once Xu Chi left, the more Lin Tao thought about it, the more suspicious he became.
It was so late; Gu Jingxuan and Xu Chi weren’t that close. Two grown men staying together in the middle of the night just felt a little odd.
Sensing something fishy, Lin Tao immediately opened his phone to report to the “organization.”
In their WeChat group, a bunch of people were still cursing out Zeng Shuqi and those blind fans. Neither Lin Tao nor Xu Chi had dared to show their faces in the group yet. Xie Jin was currently discussing with a group of friends how to give Zeng Shuqi a taste of his own medicine. Seeing the chat record drifting further and further away from a normal conversation, Lin Tao jumped in to change the subject.
[Sinner – Brother Lin]: Chizi brought a man home!
Everyone was busy talking about how to retaliate against Zeng Shuqi, and they were ready to target Lin Tao the moment they saw him pop up. But seeing his message, they instantly lost their composure.
[Denouncing Son – Papa Jin]: What’s the situation? Chizi’s hooked up with someone?
[Denouncing Offspring – Yuan]: Tell him to come out. He won’t answer his phone—is he playing hide and seek?
[Code Error]: Who’s the man? Is Chizi in a relationship? Did he abandon his Male God?
[Xu Chi is a Turtle Son – Jin]: So what exactly is going on?
Lin Tao was about to reply when he heard the sound of the door opening.
[Sinner – Brother Lin]: They’re up. I’ll report the situation tomorrow.
[Xu Chi is a Turtle Son – Jin]: Damn it! Papa wants a livestream!
Ignoring the chaos in the chat, Lin Tao put his phone down and put on a standard smile for the two people who had just walked through the door.
“Good evening, Film King Gu,” Lin Tao said with a stiff smile. In his mind, he was wondering: If Gu Jingxuan tries to kick me out later using all sorts of excuses, should I yield, yield, or yield?
“Good evening, Brother Lin.” Gu Jingxuan didn’t bother with slippers. He walked across the carpet in his socks and sat on the sofa with an air of familiarity.
The moment Gu Jingxuan sat down, Lin Tao felt like he was forgetting how to breathe. Taking a deep breath, he picked up the plate containing Xu Chi’s half-eaten apple and smiled. “I’ll go cut some fruit.”
Lin Tao stood up stiffly, his legs moving awkwardly as he headed for the kitchen. Gu Jingxuan watched his retreating back with a look of confusion.
Looking at this setup, Gu Jingxuan probably plans to stay the night. Is he going to kick me out? If I leave, will something happen between them? But if I stay, he’ll have to sleep with Xu Chi… something is still going to happen!
While washing cherries, Lin Tao’s mind was already generating countless scenes too scandalous to mention.
“Brother Lin, how can you daze off while washing fruit?” Xu Chi entered the kitchen to throw away some trash and saw Lin Tao standing at the stove in a trance, with the water gushing loudly.
He reached over and turned the water down. “Don’t leave it on so high. Save some; the water bill is expensive.”
Even though he wasn’t the one paying the utilities, every time he saw the bill, Xu Chi felt a pang of pain. Utilities in the city center were getting more and more expensive.
Lin Tao tugged on Xu Chi’s sleeve and whispered, “What is Gu Jingxuan still doing here? It’s so late, and we have nothing to host him with.”
Xu Chi swallowed and glanced toward the living room. “Brother Gu just came to see me. I called him earlier and said I missed him, so he came.”
Xu Chi’s earlobes turned red as he spoke, his face full of shyness.
Knowing that Gu Jingxuan likely had no ill intent and wouldn’t do anything bad, Lin Tao suddenly found Xu Chi quite “objectionable.”
“I say, you little hussy. Calling a man in the middle of the night and telling him you miss him. You have no sense of self-protection! What if you get kidnapped?”
Seeing that Lin Tao was about to start nagging, Xu Chi covered his ears and refused to listen. “Brother Lin, I’m going out now. Brother Gu is waiting for me.”
He practically fled the kitchen, leaving Lin Tao staring at his back.
“The son has grown up; his heart isn’t at home anymore.”
Sitting next to Gu Jingxuan, Xu Chi looked like a primary school student on his first day of school—back straight, eyes forward. He was nothing like his usual self at home, where he was usually either lying down or sprawling about.
“Are you… still going back tonight, Brother Gu?” Xu Chi checked his phone; it was nearly 11:00 PM. It was cold, windy, and foggy outside.
Gu Jingxuan looked around the apartment, which clearly only had two bedrooms. If he stayed, he would definitely be sharing a bed with Xu Chi.
“I’ll sleep on the sofa. Lin Tao is probably staying here tonight, right?” Gu Jingxuan said with a calm, breezy expression, as if he didn’t mind the sofa at all.
Xu Chi’s sofa was nowhere near as large as Gu Jingxuan’s. If Gu Jingxuan lay on it, half his legs would be hanging off. He wouldn’t be able to turn over, and he might even fall off in the middle of the night.
Xu Chi couldn’t bear to let Gu Jingxuan sleep on such a small sofa, especially when the man acted like it was no big deal. It made Xu Chi even more reluctant.
“No way. You’re at my house; how could I let you sleep on the sofa? You sleep in the bed, I’ll take the sofa.” Xu Chi patted the seat next to him. “I’m used to it; I won’t fall off.”
Gu Jingxuan, not having heard the answer he was fishing for, continued plainly, “You’re the host, how can you sleep on the sofa? I’m not some delicate person. Sleeping on the couch won’t kill me.”
As if to finalize his decision, Gu Jingxuan said firmly, “You must sleep in the bed.”
Xu Chi was so anxious he nearly cried, biting his lip until he left teeth marks. “Then, Brother Gu, sleep in the bed with me. Don’t sleep on the sofa.”
Even though his heart was already blooming with joy, Gu Jingxuan pretended to consider it for a moment. “Alright then. Sorry for the trouble tonight.”
Xu Chi remembered the last time he went to Gu Jingxuan’s house, the man had spent the whole night on the sofa. When Xu Chi woke up and saw the dark circles under Gu Jingxuan’s eyes, he had been heartbroken.
“It’s no trouble. As long as you don’t feel uncomfortable, Brother Gu.”
Lin Tao, coming out with the fruit platter, felt like he had just stumbled upon some forbidden information.
Make Gu Jingxuan “comfortable”? What on earth are they planning to do?
As a “golden bachelor” who had been single for over 20 years, Lin Tao felt like he was glowing sitting next to them. After greeting the two of them, he got up and returned to his own room.
Even a single dog has his dignity and the right to refuse high-grade dog food.
Xu Chi and Gu Jingxuan sat awkwardly on the sofa for a while.
Xu Chi coughed and pointed toward the bedroom door. “Should we go to sleep?”
“Okay.”
