- Chapter 36 - Holding Hands, Going Home
Xu Chi’s voice was deep, carrying a trace of hoarseness and fatigue as he said, “Brother Gu, I miss you.”
Hearing those words, Gu Jingxuan wished he could fly to Xu Chi’s side immediately to hug his little darling and let him sleep comfortably in his arms.
“Brother Gu, because of me, you’re being attacked by fans too. I’m always failing to do things right,” Xu Chi murmured as he lay on the sofa, his chin pressed down until it was slightly out of shape.
“…” Gu Jingxuan was at a loss for words for a moment. He had assumed Xu Chi was in a bad mood because of Zeng Shuqi and wanted to act a little spoiled, but he never expected that Xu Chi felt guilty because his involvement had led to Gu Jingxuan being scolded by fans as well.
“Silly boy,” Gu Jingxuan chuckled softly. To Xu Chi’s ears, the sound felt like ants crawling, making him feel tingly and itchy.
“I’ve never been afraid of fans scolding me; if they want to scold, let them,” Gu Jingxuan had always been a very easygoing person, never offering a word of protest regarding fans disliking a celebrity’s thoughts or actions.
“But…” Xu Chi felt a tightness in his heart just thinking about the foul language he had seen earlier. “I think the things they said were way too much; I couldn’t even stand to look at them. Brother Gu, are you really not angry at all?”
Gu Jingxuan knew exactly what Xu Chi was thinking; his little one was a particularly kind person who couldn’t bear to see others suffer. He put on his coat, stood up, and headed out.
“I am angry, but what happens after being angry?” Gu Jingxuan closed the door and walked toward the elevator. “Being angry doesn’t change the fact that they scolded you or that they don’t like you. In that case, isn’t it better just to ignore it so we don’t feel uncomfortable ourselves?”
On his end of the line, Xu Chi heard the sound of a door closing and a car engine starting. He asked in confusion, “Brother Gu, are you going out?”
Gu Jingxuan had already driven some distance. Hearing Xu Chi’s question, he paused before answering, “Yeah, I’m going to see someone very important.”
Gu Jingxuan’s voice was filled with a smile as he spoke. Xu Chi felt a dull ache in his chest—going to see… an important person? Was it someone he liked?
“Oh, then I won’t disturb Brother Gu’s driving.” Xu Chi spoke as if he wanted to hang up, yet he felt a lingering reluctance.
“Don’t.” Gu Jingxuan happened to stop at a red light. He put on his Bluetooth headset and set the phone aside. “Keep me company and talk to me. There aren’t many cars tonight; I want to chat with you more.”
Xu Chi could never refuse Gu Jingxuan’s requests, let alone a request that made his face flush and his heart race like this.
“Well… alright, but you have to pay attention to the road and drive carefully.”
“Mm. Are your public appearances finished? When are you planning to go to Jiangnan?”
Xu Chi bit his nails, remembering that the company hadn’t said whether they would approve his leave yet.
“Lin Tao helped me ask the company for leave to go to Jiangnan a while ago, but the company hasn’t approved it yet.” Thinking about his situation, Xu Chi felt increasingly aggrieved.
“I took Director Jiang’s role on my own; I’m still worried about whether I can continue filming this movie.”
Gu Jingxuan frowned; he hadn’t heard Xu Chi mention this before.
“The company picked out a script for me a while ago. At the time, I didn’t think Director Jiang would ask me to take a role, so I didn’t refuse the company’s script.” Xu Chi grabbed an apple from the plate and took a bite, rolling over to lie flat on his back.
“I only remembered after I accepted Director Jiang’s role that I hadn’t told the company in advance. I don’t know if the company will agree. Brother Gu, if the company doesn’t agree, I won’t be able to film with you anymore. What should I do?”
The rising lilt at the end of Xu Chi’s sentence made Gu Jingxuan’s heart tighten; he wanted to pull the boy into his arms and pull him into his very soul.
“Be good, it’s fine.” Gu Jingxuan parked the car and looked up at the lit window on the sixteenth floor. “Come down and open the door for me; I’m downstairs at your place.”
“What?” Xu Chi sat up from the sofa with a start, not even caring that his apple had dropped to the floor. “Brother Gu, you’re downstairs?”
“Yeah, why would I lie to you?” Gu Jingxuan answered him with a smile.
“Oh, oh! I’ll be right down!” Xu Chi hurriedly put on his shoes.
Hearing Xu Chi’s startled voice, Lin Tao walked out of the room only to see Xu Chi putting on his shoes as if he were about to head out.
“Where are you going this late at night? What if you get caught by the media?”
Hearing this, Xu Chi waved his hand. “I’m not going out; Brother Gu is downstairs, and I’m going to open the door for him. Oh, Brother Lin, give me a mask. I’m worried there might be paparazzi down there.”
Lin Tao rolled his eyes in exasperation. “What’s the use of a mask? Tomorrow, there will be news of ‘Xu Chi’s late-night secret meeting with a little lover’ anyway.”
Xu Chi acted as if he didn’t care at all. “At least Brother Gu can’t be discovered. Give me the mask.”
Lin Tao had no choice. He took a black mask from the room and tossed it to Xu Chi. “Be careful; it’s best if you don’t get photographed.”
Lin Tao was just trying to scare him. Aside from himself as the assistant, the only other person who knew where Xu Chi lived was Gu Jingxuan. Paparazzi would have to be incredibly skilled to find them, so there wasn’t much danger of being caught late at night.
Xu Chi ran out of the apartment as soon as he stepped off the elevator, not wanting Gu Jingxuan to wait in the car for even a second. He was even thinking that Gu Jingxuan might be teasing him.
When he actually saw Gu Jingxuan leaning against the car, Xu Chi’s heart began to pound wildly against his ribs.
“Brother Gu, you really came.” No matter how joyful or nervous he was, Xu Chi still remembered to put the mask on Gu Jingxuan first.
“I told you I wouldn’t lie to you. Didn’t you say you missed me? I came to keep you company and relieve the pain of your longing.” Gu Jingxuan straightened Xu Chi’s bangs, which were a bit messy from running, suppressed his desire to kiss him.
“What? Is just seeing me enough? You don’t want me to come up and sit for a while?”
The last time he came to Xu Chi’s apartment, he had been sent away by Xu Chi. This time, Gu Jingxuan wanted to go up and take a look no matter what.
“Go… go up. Of course, you should come up. It’s just that my assistant is also at my place today; would it be inconvenient?” Xu Chi asked cautiously, as if the two of them were about to do something scandalous.
Gu Jingxuan frowned and tilted his head at him. “I’m just going up to sit and have a cup of hot tea. Why would it be inconvenient if your assistant is there? Does he not allow me to drink tea?”
Gu Jingxuan’s words immediately made Xu Chi feel guilty. He scratched the hair at the top of his head. “Of course not. Let’s go up; it’s too cold outside.”
As Xu Chi started to walk forward, Gu Jingxuan was quick to grab Xu Chi’s hand. Seeing Xu Chi stop and turn to look at him, Gu Jingxuan raised an eyebrow. “Let’s go. You lead the way in front; don’t go and lose me now.”
Xu Chi turned back, his lips curving up and his earlobes turning red. I won’t lose you.
