- Chapter 38 - I Like Your Type
As the two of them entered the bedroom, they didn’t notice the door to Lin Tao’s room crack open just a sliver. Watching them step into the next room together, Lin Tao’s heart skipped a beat.
Could something really happen? I’m his assistant, and I’m literally in the room right next door; Film King Gu surely wouldn’t be that impatient, right?
The two people Lin Tao was so worried about were currently acting like total strangers. Lying on the same bed, they were separated by enough space for another person to sleep between them. Xu Chi’s back was as stiff as a board.
Gu Jingxuan heard Xu Chi toss and turn twenty or thirty times before he finally couldn’t help but speak up: “Can’t sleep?”
Thinking he had woken Gu Jingxuan, Xu Chi froze instantly and didn’t move an inch. “Yeah.”
Of course he couldn’t sleep! Xu Chi had only finished adjusting to his jet lag two days ago. He had been sleeping ten hours a day, and today, with Gu Jingxuan lying right next to him, how could he possibly drift off easily?
Hearing that faint, almost imperceptible “yeah,” Gu Jingxuan smiled and rolled over to face Xu Chi.
“Then let’s chat. We can talk about anything.”
Xu Chi’s small bedside nightlight was still on. As soon as Gu Jingxuan turned over, Xu Chi could see his face clearly. His heart immediately began to pound like thunder.
“Chat… chat about what?”
When Gu Jingxuan smiled, the corners of his eyes tilted upward. Xu Chi was momentarily lost in the sight.
“What do you want to talk about? Want to talk about your future life and career path?”
Gu Jingxuan had only mentioned it as a joke, but to his surprise, Xu Chi took it seriously, his expression turning solemn.
“Brother Gu, do you ever get angry when you see the comments from those anti-fans?”
Xu Chi was still fixated on the comment he had seen tonight. The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. Suddenly, he desperately wanted to know Gu Jingxuan’s perspective on such things.
Unexpectedly confronted with such a serious question, the playful grin vanished from Gu Jingxuan’s face. He actually took a moment to think it over.
“When I first started out, I was very angry. I worked so hard back then. I trained desperately every day, attended every class. But there will always be people who just won’t like you. Back then, I was extremely pessimistic, but what could I do? Life has to go on, and people have to look forward. I couldn’t give up on the dream I’ve always pursued just because some people didn’t like me.”
As Gu Jingxuan spoke, he really did recall those days. He had been truly heartbroken back then, even going so far as to ask his father what exactly he wasn’t doing well enough.
He remembered his father’s words to this day.
That afternoon, the sunlight was dazzling. His father was lying on a lounge chair in the garden. He patted Gu Jingxuan’s shoulder as he sat on the grass and said: “You are living for yourself. Can other people’s opinions determine your choices? If not, then work hard and create a better version of yourself.”
Xu Chi listened intently. Suddenly, he wanted to meet the Gu Jingxuan of that time and give him a big hug.
“Now, I don’t feel much of anything about it. If scolding me makes them happy, let them scold. It won’t kill me. Most of the time, achievement is what makes people shut up.”
After saying this, Gu Jingxuan reached out and pinched Xu Chi’s cheek. “What’s wrong? Is someone online saying nasty things about you?”
The insults from Xu Chi’s anti-fans usually just targeted his acting skills or called him a “pretty boy.” Aside from that, no one really attacked other aspects of him, so it didn’t affect him much.
But after seeing those comments from Gu Jingxuan’s anti-fans today, he found it unbearable.
This is the person I like. Such an outstanding and hardworking person, I can’t even admire him enough. How can you people scold him so easily?
Xu Chi shook his head, his gaze becoming a bit distant. “The things those people say about me are just the same old tropes; I’m already used to it.” I just feel so bad for you.
“Well, in that case, let’s talk about daily life.”
Before Xu Chi could react to what Gu Jingxuan meant by “daily life,” Gu Jingxuan spoke first.
“Little one, what kind of person do you like? What kind of partner do you want to find in the future?”
Xu Chi was caught completely off guard. He stared at Gu Jingxuan, speechless.
Did Brother Gu find out something? Does he know I might have feelings for him, so he’s testing the waters before crushing my fantasies with one blow?
“What’s wrong?” Seeing that Xu Chi remained silent, Gu Jingxuan thought he was just too shy to speak, so he comforted him: “It’s okay to tell me. I’m not like those entertainment reporters outside; I won’t go around spreading rumors.”
It wasn’t that Xu Chi was shy; to him, Gu Jingxuan was nearly perfect, and for a moment, he couldn’t find the words to describe him.
“Um… the type I like,” Xu Chi’s eyes darted around, avoiding Gu Jingxuan’s gaze as his mind raced. “Someone very kind and hardworking, someone with their own opinions who is also very talented… someone who makes your heart flutter at first sight.”
Xu Chi had thought of countless beautiful adjectives in his head, but in the end, he didn’t say them out loud.
Upon hearing Xu Chi’s description, Gu Jingxuan’s mind immediately conjured up the image of the Best Actress, Xing Wen. She matched Xu Chi’s description almost perfectly.
Xu Chi had no idea that Gu Jingxuan was already starting to compare him with Xing Wen, weighing their compatibility and wondering if his own chances were high.
“Then… what kind of person does Brother Gu like?” Xu Chi asked cautiously. He was deathly afraid that Gu Jingxuan would name someone specific in the next second, leaving him no room at all.
Gu Jingxuan didn’t bother with roundabout ways. He looked directly at Xu Chi and said, “I like people like you. I’m really not lying to you.”
Watching Xu Chi’s face turn red bit by bit, Gu Jingxuan felt exceptionally satisfied.
“Brother Gu… really, you.” Xu Chi didn’t want to argue with him anymore. He would just pretend that those words were truly meant for him; he would take whatever happiness he could get, even if it was fleeting.
Before he could finish his sentence, Xu Chi covered his mouth and let out a yawn.
Gu Jingxuan looked at Xu Chi. The corners of the boy’s eyes were slightly red and filled with tears. One hand covered his mouth, and he looked a bit embarrassed and flustered by the yawn. In Gu Jingxuan’s eyes, Xu Chi looked both adorable and alluring.
Taking a few deep breaths to suppress his impulses, Gu Jingxuan leaned his upper body over Xu Chi and turned off the nightlight.
Even though there was only the nearly non-existent light from the streetlamps outside, Gu Jingxuan could still see Xu Chi’s eyes. In the darkness, they still shimmered with moisture, as if they held the stars.
He leaned down and kissed Xu Chi’s forehead, his tone gentle.
“Goodnight, my little one.”
