- Chapter 9 - Day 9 of Running Away with the Ball
The alarm came far too abruptly, leaving Pei Nan no time to find fault. He quickly calmed down and first composed a message telling Chen Bin that he had urgent business and had to leave early, telling them to have a good time and that he would treat them next time to make up for it. Then, he stuffed his phone into his pocket and strode toward the bar’s entrance.
The countdown in his mind was constantly updating.
With two minutes left, Pei Nan found his car. He looked around, evaluating a safe spot in his mind. After thinking it over, he still felt his car was the safest. As long as he hid inside the car and didn’t come out, no one would know there was a lop-eared rabbit inside.
Even if someone saw it, no one would risk a criminal offense by prying open a car door just to catch a rabbit.
419 shared the same thought. The nearest hotel was a street away; given Pei Nan’s current speed and the remaining time, there was simply no way to move a significant distance.
With one minute left on the countdown, Pei Nan had already slipped into the back seat. He cracked a window slightly in advance for ventilation, then clutched the keys in his hand and locked the doors. Finally, he curled his entire body up and lay down on the back seat, waiting for the transformation.
The moment the countdown hit zero, a snow-white lop-eared rabbit appeared on the seat.
He lifted a paw to scratch the car keys out from under him, then settled down obediently.
Only after the alarm was cleared did Pei Nan feel in the mood to review the entire incident with 419.
“In the system notification just now, it mentioned that the concentration of inducing drugs in my body was too high. What does that mean?”
419 was very familiar with system language and explained to Pei Nan, “It’s exactly what you think. Someone spiked your drink. If we hadn’t successfully made it out, you’d be in deep trouble right now. Do you remember me telling you the plot? Your first incident happened at a bar.”
“Is it the same person?” As a little rabbit, Pei Nan struggled to knit his non-existent eyebrows. He had some ideas in his mind, but there was always one point that didn’t make sense.
It was basically certain now that he had been targeted at the bar; otherwise, why would the system issue a warning at this specific time and no other? But he had only drunk with a girl tonight the only male was his roommate, Chen Bin.
It couldn’t be that Chen Bin was harming him, right?
Pei Nan’s tiny rabbit brain couldn’t think of too many things. He drooped his head listlessly and listened to 419’s answer.
“That’s not clear for now. I can only lock onto the identities of Xue Xingqi and you; everyone else appears in anonymous form. When we perform tasks, we judge by actions, not intentions. In other words, we can’t highlight someone as a priority before they have acted. If we did that and it caused a butterfly effect resulting in even greater harm, it wouldn’t be good.”
Pei Nan’s teeth itched. “So Xue Xingqi doesn’t have human rights?”
419 spoke righteously, “He’s different. He’s your husband. How can your husband be a bad guy?”
“Heh, I think you’ve had enough of the good life and are just begging me to take a couple of bites out of you, aren’t you?”
A dangerous light shot from Pei Nan’s dark, round eyes. 419 shook its jelly-like body and quickly tried to make amends, “But there are details in the book! I remember one of the ‘Gongs’ likes cross-dressing; his favorite thing is wearing a skirt while taking you head-on…”
419’s voice grew smaller and smaller until it vanished.
Cross-dressing!
F***! (A type of plant)
The fur on Pei Nan’s back was about to stand on end. “Is the world of gay men really that wild? Won’t I be unable to let my guard down whenever I go out in the future? Men have bad intentions, and I have to be careful of women too. Can’t interactions between people be a bit simpler? Why have I never heard of these things before? This isn’t the city I grew up knowing!”
“Shh—Host, stop shouting. Look outside.” To avoid Pei Nan’s toothy attack, 419 had long since stuck itself to the car window. At this moment, it prompted Pei Nan to look out. Several tall, burly figures were seen hurrying past the car, and the stray voices from their walkie-talkies could be faintly heard.
The one who was drugged won’t have gone far… search carefully.”
“Boss, the surveillance shows him lingering near the car for a while, and then he just vanished. He couldn’t have disappeared via teleportation, could he?”
“Don’t think just because it’s dark there are ghost stories. Hurry up and search. If we don’t find him, no one here will have a good outcome. You know the consequences yourselves!”
The coarse voice slipped in through the crack in the car window, making Pei Nan dizzy with anger. However, he could only pretend to be a plush toy under so many pairs of eyes.
Those people walked back and forth several times. After searching in vain, they locked their sights on the car where Pei Nan was hiding.
“Boss, could that kid have hidden in the trunk?”
The boss didn’t speak, seemingly considering the possibility of prying the car open and the resulting consequences. In the end, considering that this car didn’t allow access to the trunk from the back seat, he gave up and led his men elsewhere.
“Host, what’s wrong?!” 419 was about to tell Pei Nan that the people had gone far, but when it turned around, it found that Pei Nan had slumped over like a soul-less plush toy.
Pei Nan leaned in the corner, feeling so weak it was miserable. “I was too angry, which triggered the drug’s effects. I’ll just sleep for a bit and I’ll be fine.”
“Oh, okay.” 419 obediently landed beside Pei Nan and hid in his fur.
Pei Nan slept until midnight. When he opened his eyes, he felt something looming over his head. Looking closely, he realized it was 419, which had turned into a cover to shield him.
The pitter-patter of rain hit the glass, making a dull sound.
Pei Nan moved his body and shivered from the cold wind slipping in through the window crack.
“Host, you’re awake! How are you feeling?”
419’s milky voice was truly comforting in the deep of the night. Pei Nan’s mood smoothed out. “I’m okay, I don’t feel quite so light-headed anymore.”
Before he finished speaking, Pei Nan changed back. He was still in a reclining position, but his waist and back ached, his face was flushed, and his spirit was very withered.
419 circled around him worriedly. “Why did you change back?”
“I saw an option at the bottom of the panel and decided to try it. Hiss—” Pei Nan supported his splitting headache, feeling a bit of regret. The aftereffects this time were far stronger than the previous two. He probably couldn’t even drive a car right now; if he couldn’t move, he might as well be a rabbit.
Pei Nan waited a moment, then pulled out his phone to call a designated driver.
As it turned out, because of the rainstorm, no one was picking up the request.
Pei Nan huddled pitifully in the back seat, enduring until the storm subsided. Damp mist covered the car windows. Pei Nan sat up and wiped a patch on the glass, revealing a scene outside like rain-beaten lotus flowers the ground was crowded with fallen leaves in puddles, and there were scattered rain clouds in the grayish-white sky. The fine drizzle was like a mist, silently soaking everything.
He endured the headache and got out of the car. Between choosing a designated driver or calling a cab, he chose to first go to the pharmacy ahead to buy a box of painkillers.
The newly bought car was clean with nothing in it, let alone an umbrella. Pei Nan furrowed his thick brows and walked forward with his head down, stepping through deep and shallow spots.
419 couldn’t transform into an umbrella outside the car, so it could only watch Pei Nan’s somewhat lonely silhouette.
Fortunately, the pharmacy near the bar was on 24-hour standby. After Pei Nan entered the shop, he even managed to get a cup of hot water. He held the warm cup and took the painkillers.
After sitting for a while, he felt the medicine starting to work. Once the headache eased a bit, he left the pharmacy. To his surprise, just as he was almost back to the car, Pei Nan felt his body going wrong again. His head didn’t hurt, but why was his perspective of things spinning?
“Thump—”
Pei Nan fell straight toward the ground. 419 was so scared its system almost crashed. Luckily, at the critical moment, the system changed Pei Nan back into a rabbit, allowing 419 to catch him. Otherwise, Pei Nan’s high bridge of his nose might have been fractured.
But even having turned into a rabbit, the current situation was truly terrible.
The wet ground soiled the snow-white rabbit fur, and the cold wind blew in gusts. Pei Nan’s consciousness was so blurred he couldn’t even hear what 419 was saying.
Just as 419 was thinking of stealthily moving Pei Nan under the car to hide, a group of young people came out of the high-end club diagonally across the street.
419 immediately didn’t dare move again, silently praying for the people opposite to leave quickly. Suddenly, it froze and stared intently at a tall man across the way.
“Old Xue, you’re really no fun. Everyone asked you out to play so you could relax. In two more days, Ding Jie is going abroad; we won’t see him again until the New Year. You won’t even say a few words of advice or a blessing, yet you let the poor guy watch you all night with longing eyes.” Shen Yu looked at Xue Xingqi teasingly, her eyes full of the schadenfreude of a mischief-maker.
Xue Xingqi gave her a cold glance. “Ding Jie has enough advice from his own family.”
“Come on, who doesn’t know Ding Jie’s intentions? Ever since you came out, his feelings haven’t been hidden. His family supports it too. If you really don’t have those intentions, you’d better be careful. Don’t let their family find a loophole; otherwise, it won’t look good for either family’s reputation.” Shen Yu was still more on Xue Xingqi’s side, naturally not wanting to see him tied to someone he didn’t like.
At the mention of someone he liked, Xue Xingqi’s expression shifted slightly.
Unfortunately, Shen Yu’s attention had already shifted to a moving white object across the street and she didn’t catch it.
Shen Yu squinted her eyes and looked again and again. “Old Xue, look, what is that thing across the street?”
Xue Xingqi raised his eyes to look. Based on that silhouette, “It’s a small animal, probably.”
“It just rained heavily; it’s too pitiful. Come on, let’s go over and take a look.”
Shen Yu’s compassion overflowed. She immediately crossed the road, and the moment she saw a lop-eared rabbit crouching on the ground, her compassion reached its peak.
“It’s so small. It must be lost.” Shen Yu reached out a fingertip to poke the rabbit’s ear and was startled by the cold touch. “Old Xue, hurry up and pick it up. It looks like it’s going to freeze to death.”
Xue Xingqi didn’t move. “If you want to save it, why do I have to be the one to hold it?”
“Naturally, because your embrace is warmer.” Shen Yu blinked her eyes. “Besides, I’m wearing a limited edition; it would be too wasteful if it got ruined by holding a rabbit.”
Xue Xingqi pressed his tongue against his teeth and bent down to scoop up the rabbit.
Only after touching it did he realize the lop-eared rabbit’s condition was indeed quite serious. Without needing Shen Yu to emphasize it, he tucked the rabbit into his arms and used his palm to hold it against his chest. “To the pet hospital first.”
Shen Yu said sensibly, “Then I’ll go get the car.”
The car had already been driven out by the valet across the street and was waiting for Shen Yu to go over. Xue Xingqi just had to stand in place and wait.
419 happily circled around Xue Xingqi, carefully choosing angles to take photos of the man and the rabbit as a memento.
It hadn’t expected it and Pei Nan would find a blessing in disguise. As long as Pei Nan woke up a bit later and put in some effort to stick to Xue Xingqi, being taken home by him would be a piece of cake. The completion of the task was just around the corner!
After getting into the car, Xue Xingqi didn’t put the rabbit down. Instead, he had Shen Yu turn on the heater and held the rabbit in front of the vent to dry its fur.
Shen Yu glanced a couple of times at Xue Xingqi’s calm face through the rearview mirror and clicked her tongue. “If only you were half as attentive to Ding Jie as you are to this rabbit, he’d be happy out of his mind. Forget going abroad, he’d definitely follow right behind your a** at every step.”
“No need.”
Xue Xingqi stroked the rabbit’s fur. Once dry, the feel was incredibly soft, as if it were suctioning to his fingers, making it impossible for him to put it down.
“Got it, got it. You’re a monk of the new era, an ascetic among gay men. There’s no one more ignorant of romance than you.”
Xue Xingqi didn’t argue; what Shen Yu said was more or less true anyway.
By the time they reached the pet hospital, Pei Nan finally drifted awake. He felt his ears being lifted by someone, and noisy voices were spinning in his furry ear canals. He struggled to open his eyes and looked directly into Xue Xingqi’s face.
“Eh? Why is this rabbit shaking? Is it cold again? Hurry up and pull it back into your arms.”
The rabbit gritted its teeth: I’m f*ing angry!
