- Chapter 8 - Day 8 of Running Away with a Baby
“What are you two dawdling at the door for?! Get in here, quickly!”
Before Pei Nan could speak, a piercing, high-pressure command echoed through the classroom and the hallway. Pei Nan rubbed his eyebrow awkwardly, his gaze drifting toward his side. His bright eyes clearly pleaded, “What do I do? What do I do? Save me, save me.”
Xue Xingqi found it amusing. How was he already in university yet still afraid of teachers like a middle schooler? With a touch of mischief, he gave Pei Nan’s back a light push and whispered, “Go in first.”
Pei Nan’s heart skipped a beat as he resisted. “But I’m not even taking this class!”
He was naturally intimidated by this type of teacher. One session of this lecture would likely cost him half his life. Finding Xue Xingqi had been annoying enough; what was the point of sitting through a lecture that sounded like a foreign language to him?
Anger flared in his heart, and courage born of desperation took over. He clenched his fists, prepared to walk away and pretend he was just a random passerby.
“He’s looking at us,” Xue Xingqi added in a timely low voice.
Being slightly taller than Pei Nan, Xue Xingqi could see the fear and guilt flickering in the other man’s eyes. He looked like a small animal, making Xue Xingqi want to tease him even more.
Sure enough, upon hearing those words, Pei Nan snapped his eyes upward.
Why is everyone looking over here… Hundreds of eyes in the lecture hall were fixed on them. Several girls sitting together were whispering and laughing while looking at him and Xue Xingqi. The old professor stood with his hands behind his back, his hawk-like eyes staring unblinkingly, his thin lips pressed together.
In this situation, silence spoke louder than words.
Pei Nan swallowed hard. Under that laser-like gaze, he instinctively flashed a toothy grin.
“Do I need to personally invite the two of you?”
Pei Nan knew he had missed his best chance to escape. He forced another smile. “Sorry, Professor, we’re coming in now.”
He said “we,” but he had no intention of actually listening to the lecture with Xue Xingqi.
Braving the hundreds of stares, they walked inside. As they passed the podium, Pei Nan was stopped again.
“Why are you looking toward the back? The seats in the first row aren’t full.” The old professor pointed a finger; sure enough, there were two empty seats on the left.
Pei Nan felt his vision go dark. What is wrong with the students at Jindu University? How could they leave these “lucky” front-row seats empty? Why aren’t they sitting as close to the professor as possible to learn and study?!
“Alright, Professor,” Xue Xingqi followed up. With his long legs, he stepped forward and pulled the stiff Pei Nan along to sit down.
The moment they sat, both of them clearly heard muffled giggles coming from behind them.
Pei Nan held the arm Xue Xingqi had pulled, closing his eyes in self-deception. If he could, he really wanted to sleep through this entire class.
But with his eyes closed, his ears became exceptionally sharp.
He heard Xue Xingqi take out a textbook and flip to a specific page following Professor Liu’s voice. The occasional sound of a pen scratching against paper filled the air as the classroom gradually settled into silence.
Pei Nan peeked through his eyelids to steal a glance at his seatmate.
Xue Xingqi’s handsome features were traced in perfect lines by the light and shadow. His calm eyes reflected formulas that Pei Nan neither recognized nor understood.
“Xue Xingqi, please answer this question.”
Pei Nan was startled awake. He quickly sat up straight, placing his arms on the desk, looking as prim and proper as an elementary school student.
When Xue Xingqi stood up, he saw the crown of Pei Nan’s head. It was tucked into his thick hair, possessing a clumsy sort of cuteness.
He looked for a couple of seconds before with restraint pulling his gaze away. Looking at the PPT, he analyzed the case study Professor Liu had presented with clear logic, articulating his own understanding and thoughts.
Professor Liu nodded with satisfaction. “Good, keep up this level of work.”
He didn’t actually want to make things difficult for his students, but Xue Xingqi was simply too prominent. He attracted so much attention that the classroom became chaotic. If the professor didn’t use a firm hand to suppress that atmosphere now, the rest of the semester would be a disaster.
Fortunately, Xue Xingqi remained unaffected. Shifting his gaze to the person next to Xue Xingqi, the professor saw Pei Nan sitting honestly and upright, so he chose not to trouble him.
Receiving this “friendly” signal, Pei Nan let out a sigh of relief.
However, he had celebrated far too early. By the time he felt like his backside had gone numb from sitting, Professor Liu still hadn’t rung the bell. During that long stretch of time, not a single person even went to the restroom, making Pei Nan feel too embarrassed to slip away. He suffered through it, glancing left and right, until he finally couldn’t take it and started playing Anipop on his phone. He played until he ran out of energy points.
Dejected, Pei Nan summoned 419 to chat in his mind.
“Is the curriculum at Jindu University truly this terrifying, or did humanity forget to bring me along during evolution?”
419 tapped him twice on the head. “Perhaps this is just the world of the elites.”
Even in the system world, there were “involution kings” who seamlessly moved from one host to the next, earning enough points for 419 to transfer departments countless times.
The two “losers” sighed in unison.
Xue Xingqi had been secretly paying attention to his seatmate the whole time.
He couldn’t help it; he found the other man far too interesting. Whether it was the way Pei Nan stared at his car or the moments where his true self slipped through his outward appearance, Xue Xingqi was captivated.
When his seatmate sighed for the nth time, Xue Xingqi finally couldn’t help saying, “There’s still half an hour until class ends.”
Upon hearing this, Pei Nan buried his face in his arms and slumped onto the desk like a salted fish that had lost its soul.
He intended to spend the remaining time in this exact position.
Xue Xingqi hadn’t expected his words to discourage Pei Nan instead of motivating him. He felt a bit guilty and lowered his gaze, though he couldn’t hide the hint of a smile in his eyes.
The moment the bell rang, Pei Nan took advantage of the gap while Professor Liu was retrieving his USB drive to bolt out the door.
He left Xue Xingqi, who had wanted to ask for his contact information, staring at the doorway with a sigh.
Xue Xingqi pursed his lips. When he lowered his eyes again, the smile was gone, and he returned to being the unflappable Xue Xingqi.
Forget it, better not mess with a straight guy.
Pei Nan ran out of the teaching building straight to his car before finally stretching out his stiff body. “That was torture. I used to hear seniors say that accompanying a girlfriend to class was sweet and happy, and I was so envious. I thought I’d do the same when I got to college. Now it seems I should forget it. It’s pure suffering. I’d rather play a game of ball.”
419 said huffily, “Other people have affection and romance. What about you? You big single dog! You were sitting right next to Xue Xingqi, and you didn’t even get his contact info! You two should start as friends, get familiar, then go out for a meal. You could pretend to be drunk and go home with him then the mission would be done!”
Pei Nan thought about it carefully and felt it wasn’t impossible. The details could be worked out.
However, it would be hard to go back and find him now. The guy had likely gone off somewhere. He’d just have to wait for the next opportunity.
On the way back to his own school, 419 was still nagging.
Pei Nan couldn’t help but argue, “In the past, I only flirted with girls; I’m an expert at that. But with Xue Xingqi, it feels off. It’s normal that I couldn’t think of it.”
“Fine, fine. Let me give you a psychological boost. How about this: treat him as a brother first. You have no problem making ‘bros,’ right? Based on the probability I told you before, you will definitely meet again. When that time comes, you must take him down!”
Of course there’s a problem; Xue Xingqi’s character is terrible.
Pei Nan hadn’t forgotten the role Xue Xingqi played in the story 419 told him. He was someone who could commit a crime alongside several others. Xue Xingqi’s moral bottom line couldn’t be very high. Although Pei Nan was easygoing, he had never done anything illegal or undisciplined since he was a kid.
“Being friends is out of the question. Don’t use your ‘romance brain’ to persuade me. Think about your beloved Ms. Zhu Yun; I still need to live well to be my mother’s son.”
Pei Nan saw the situation clearly. A mission was a mission, but life was life. For a better future, he could make temporary sacrifices, but only within limits. “I can’t ignore my current actions for the sake of an ethereal future.”
419 gave an “oh” and retreated back into the system space.
While waiting at a red light, Pei Nan thought back to the Xue Xingqi he saw today.
Actually, if he hadn’t met Xue Xingqi under these circumstances, they might have really become friends.
When he drove his new car back to the dormitory building, Chen Bin happened to be coming downstairs to pick up a delivery. His eyes lit up when he saw the car.
“Daddy Nan, you going out tonight? Yaoyao said her friend found a new bar not too crowded, not noisy, great service. Want to go check it out?”
“You just want me to be the driver, just say it.” Pei Nan waved his arm and playfully slapped Chen Bin’s chest. “How are things going with you and Yaoyao? You’ve been chasing her for so long; just confess if you’re going to.”
Chen Bin chuckled. “Soon, soon. I’ll treat you to a meal then.”
The two of them got ready and set off that evening. They picked up Yaoyao and her roommate Lanlan from the girls’ dorm next door. Pei Nan had a slight impression of them from the last mixer.
Yaoyao was extroverted. Not long after getting in the car, she familiarly asked Pei Nan how things were going with their department beauty.
“Nothing’s going on.”
“So you’re still single then,” Yaoyao said excitedly.
Pei Nan focused on driving and gave a brief “Mm.”
This cold response didn’t dampen Yaoyao’s enthusiasm. She winked at Lanlan, mouthing: “There’s still a chance, go for it!”
Lanlan carefully tried to catch Pei Nan’s eyes in the rearview mirror. Those eyes were beautifully shaped and spirited, with deep, dark pupils like a starry night. Even though she didn’t make eye contact, Lanlan’s face turned bright red.
Chen Bin peeked over, only to be glared back by Yaoyao.
He shrunk back into the passenger seat feeling aggrieved, thinking that comparison really was the thief of joy; his Daddy Nan’s charm was truly immense.
After getting out of the car, Chen Bin pulled Pei Nan aside to talk, avoiding the two girls.
“I don’t have plans to date for now. I’m focusing on training this semester.” Pei Nan remained indifferent. He was currently splitting his days into eight parts; between training and the system mission, where would he find time for a relationship?
Chen Bin was used to “falling flowers having intent but the flowing water having none.” Even Lin Qiao’er hadn’t succeeded; Lanlan would likely be the same.
“Well, when you do want to date, tell your bro. We’ll introduce you to some pretty girls.”
Pei Nan laughed. “Thanks.”
The four of them entered the bar. The place was exactly as Chen Bin described the facilities and decor were in a style young people liked. Since they arrived early, it wasn’t smoky or chaotic yet. They got a booth, ordered a few drinks, and chatted for a while. Eventually, Yaoyao couldn’t sit still and planned to take Chen Bin to the dance floor, hoping to create space for her friend and Pei Nan.
Her plan was good, but fate had other ideas. Just as she stood up, an uninvited guest arrived to have a drink with Pei Nan.
The girl across from him wore exaggerated smoky eye makeup. In the dim light, her hot figure was even more convincing than her face. She leaned lightly against Pei Nan’s table. An ambiguous scent of perfume mixed with a faint hint of tobacco drifted over. Pei Nan’s heart skipped twice as the girl’s slender finger lightly brushed his cheek.
“Hey handsome, let’s have a drink together.” Her voice was slightly husky, carrying an irresistible allure amidst the music.
Pei Nan leaned back and reached out to block her hand as she moved closer again. “Drinking is fine, but skip the rest.”
The girl withdrew her hand nonchalantly and sat down next to Pei Nan. “Fair enough.”
Lanlan watched from the side, stunned. She couldn’t help thinking, So Pei Nan likes the “older sister” type? Then I definitely don’t have a chance.
However, that “older sister” didn’t stay long before being called away by a phone call. Lanlan felt relieved, and when she looked at Pei Nan again, her initial nervousness had vanished.
“Pei Nan, was that woman just now… uh… your type?”
Pei Nan raised an eyebrow and answered honestly, “I’m not sure. I don’t have a specific type I like yet.”
The woman in question walked to a corner and went up to the second floor. She impatiently lit a cigarette and complained to the person hidden in the darkness, “Why call me back so early? If it weren’t for you, I could have gotten two more drinks into him.”
“Watch your voice. If you’re going to act, do it right. Why do you want to give him so much? You want to do a corpse? Besides, I don’t want to deal with his vomit while I’m doing him. Don’t forget what happened before…”
“I think he has a great body; he definitely works out. He won’t be broken that easily. Have someone watch him. Catch him if he goes to the restroom. I can’t wait to test his feel. You don’t know—his skin is so smooth and white, and his waist is thin. He’ll definitely twist beautifully when he’s being taken.”
He blew a smoke ring, looking down at Pei Nan, who was still chatting, and revealed an excited, bloodthirsty smile.
“What bad luck, little straight boy.”
There were many unexpected situations in a bar. Pei Nan didn’t dare leave Lanlan alone at the booth, so he had to call Chen Bin and tell him and Yaoyao to come back. Whether it was because the atmosphere had picked up and the music was too loud, or because they had their phones on silent, it took a long while for them to return.
Pei Nan finally managed to break away to use the restroom.
He turned left and right in the hallway, finally spotting the restroom sign under the neon lights.
Suddenly, a system warning blared in his mind.
Warning! Warning! Detected that the host has ingested guiding drugs. Physical state is unstable. Transformation into a cat will occur in three minutes to preserve energy. Countdown: 2:59
