- Chapter 10 - Day 10 of Running Away with the Ball
Xue Xingqi noticed it too the rabbit acted as if its ears had been painfully yanked. Its four legs flailed wildly in the air. He quickly reached out, padding the rabbit’s bottom with his hand before tucking it securely against his arm.
The doctor nearby let out a surprised “Eh?” and remarked, “Logically, gently lifting a rabbit this small by the ears for an exam shouldn’t be an issue. Does it have other underlying conditions? Do you want us to give it a full check-up?”
Neither Xue Xingqi nor Shen Yu were people who pinched pennies. Hearing this, they were about to hand the rabbit over.
Pei Nan had no desire to be poked and prodded all over his body again. He hurriedly clung to Xue Xingqi’s arm, burying his rabbit head deep into the folds of the man’s clothes, leaving only his round body and floppy ears exposed.
Shen Yu found it amusing and laughed while stroking the rabbit’s fur. “It seems he doesn’t like being handled for exams, almost as if he understands what we’re saying.”
She stroked him a few more times and felt the texture was incredible better than the high-end furs she usually bought. Seeing how much she liked it, Xue Xingqi said, “You keep him then. Since you found him, you should raise him.”
“Hey? You can’t put it like that. I spotted him, but you were the one who actually picked him up.” Shen Yu emphasized the difference between “spotting” and “picking up,” attempting to dodge the responsibility of raising a lop-eared rabbit. “You know what I’m like I have a three-minute interest span. The little bunny won’t have a good life with me.”
“Then we’ll find an adopter.”
The two of them didn’t lower their voices around people, the rabbit, or the system. Hearing this, the doctor enthusiastically recommended their chain of pet stores, suggesting they could board the rabbit there until someone adopted him.
“A lop-eared rabbit with such excellent and cute features is quite valuable. If you truly go through adoption channels, I estimate it’ll find a master in half a day.”
That was a conservative estimate. In reality, the moment these two young people signed the adoption authorization, people from the hospital would probably jump out to claim him. Just look at the unprincipled employees behind the glass doors every single one was waiting to take over the rabbit.
419 panicked. “Host, hurry up and seize the opportunity to go home with Xue Xingqi!”
Meanwhile, the doctor continued praising the rabbit to the pair. “This kind of rabbit is gentle, quiet, and well-behaved a pet many girls love. Raising them is quite simple…”
Pei Nan gave a reluctant “Hmph.” For the sake of the mission, he allowed himself to compromise temporarily and pretend to be a “gentle, quiet, and well-behaved” lop-eared rabbit.
However, despite his best plans even clinging to Xue Xingqi’s arm he couldn’t change the mind of this jade-faced, cold-blooded man. Xue Xingqi’s clean, slender fingers gently lifted the rabbit’s paws and peeled the entire creature off his arm.
“Won’t you reconsider? This lop-eared rabbit seems to really like you. If you take care of him, he’ll recover much better.”
“But for the sake of his future life, finding a master who truly loves him would be better.” Xue Xingqi’s eyes were calm and waveless; he appeared gentle yet rational.
The doctor had to admit Xue Xingqi was right. If he took the rabbit today but neglected it later, it would be better to leave it at the pet store to wait for a fated owner.
“Alright then. Hand him to me now. He doesn’t have a name yet, right? We’ll let the next owner name him.”
Pei Nan felt that exerting all his effort to act like a well-behaved rabbit in Xue Xingqi’s arms was humiliating enough. He didn’t expect the ultimate humiliation: Xue Xingqi didn’t intend to take him home at all!
Then why the hell am I pretending?!
Pei Nan’s rebellious streak flared up. “Well-behaved and gentle”? He had never heard those words used to describe himself since he was a child.
He immediately performed a “mad lop-eared rabbit” act right on Xue Xingqi’s arm. His three-lobed mouth clamped onto the man’s soft shirt. The high-end, comfortable fabric didn’t even last one round before it tore with a crack. Facing the tight skin revealed underneath, his round eyes didn’t even blink; there wasn’t a hint of embarrassment.
He was just a lop-eared rabbit what did he know?
The rabbit’s sudden frenzy caught everyone off guard. Even the doctor was startled, worrying the rabbit might actually be a sick animal that had been discarded.
Only Xue Xingqi watched with great interest. This little thing, barely the size of a palm and still supported by his arm, dared to act so tyrannically. This lively, clever spark… the more he looked, the more it reminded him of a certain someone.
Just as the rabbit intended to bite through the other side of his shirt, Xue Xingqi gently cupped its face. As he cradled the furry face in his palm, Xue Xingqi felt light and joyful. Enveloped in darkness, Pei Nan nudged the palm with his damp nose. Suddenly, he heard Xue Xingqi chuckle and say, “I actually quite like his personality. I’ll take him.”
“Whatever is needed to care for a lop-eared rabbit, pack a set of food, snacks, and toys,” the voice paused before adding, “Get the best of everything.”
No matter how much Shen Yu and the others speculated or asked why he changed his mind, Xue Xingqi only smiled without speaking, his hands steadily holding the rabbit the entire time.
The moment Xue Xingqi spoke, 419 circled him several times before landing on Pei Nan’s forehead. “Fantastic! Classmate Xue is such a good person!”
Although Pei Nan was confused by the turn of events, he hadn’t lost his mind enough to forget Xue Xingqi’s character settings. “419, be professional. Stop misleading me.”
419 stayed silent, immersed in the joy of the mission’s rapid progress.
Pei Nan struggled to tilt his head, looking at the handsome chin right in front of him. He thought Xue Xingqi’s razor must be pretty good his chin was perfectly clean without a single bit of stubble.
Shen Yu watched from the side, finding it rare. “Does the little bunny have a sense of aesthetics too? Why is he staring straight at you?”
Xue Xingqi looked down and met the rabbit’s round eyes. He couldn’t help but reach out and touch his own chin, feeling the furry sensation. “Maybe he likes me.”
“Likes you? More like he likes tearing your clothes.”
Xue Xingqi pondered for a moment, and as if remembering something, he laughed. “That works too.”
Shen Yu felt a wave of goosebumps. “Don’t let Ding Jie see you like this, or he’ll definitely go crazy.”
Smiling so radiantly it was as if he were in love.
Since Xue Xingqi bought too many things, he requested a home delivery service. He decided to take the rabbit home first to adjust to the environment. Initially, he wanted to carry the rabbit directly, but for safety, he decided to put the rabbit in a carrier to take him home.
“He probably likes your scent. Once you get home, if the rabbit acts strangely or won’t sleep, you can take off this shirt and put it in his nest. It will reduce his anxiety.”
The doctor sounded a bit uncertain as he said this. After all, this rabbit’s behavior had already transcended his existing experience; the owner would just have to figure it out as they went.
Xue Xingqi didn’t find it difficult.
Pei Nan, however, did. He kept refreshing the mission panel. “Why isn’t this damn mission over? Xue Xingqi already agreed to take me home.”
419 was also puzzled. “Maybe wait a bit? What if it’s literal? Try refreshing again once you’ve actually arrived at his house.”
Pei Nan lay in the pink castle-like rabbit nest, speechless.
Finally, the car stopped at a high-end apartment building. He was carried up by Xue Xingqi, nest and all. Just as the fingerprint-unlocked door opened, he heard a ding the system synchronized the mission update.
Mission: Be picked up and taken home by the neighbor school grass. Time Limit: 30 days. Countdown: 12 days. Mission Progress Update: 50%
“419, why is it only half? Didn’t I complete the mission?”
The fur on Pei Nan’s body bristled. Xue Xingqi thought he just wasn’t adjusted to the new home yet and kept stroking his back with a warm palm.
419 also panicked for a moment. It hurriedly flipped through the system manual and sent a report to its superiors. The final conclusion made the system feel guilty.
If it hadn’t made a mistake earlier by blocking for Pei Nan which led to the main system revoking some of its permissions it could have exploited a bug to let this count as a success. But now, the standards were strictly controlled by the main system. The opportunistic behavior of being “picked up as a rabbit” wouldn’t pass the check.
419 honestly explained this to Pei Nan.
Pei Nan sighed. “In that case, we’ll just grind for points.”
The mechanism was dead, but he was alive. If being picked up once counted for 50%, he would just run away and get “picked up” again.
Everyone was playing dirty; nobody owed anyone anything.
The plan was set, but when it came to implementation, Pei Nan realized how difficult it would be.
Firstly, he didn’t know why Xue Xingqi enjoyed rubbing the rabbit so much. He had been rubbed almost everywhere. If it weren’t for the fact that both he and Xue Xingqi were guys, he would have felt truly embarrassed.
Secondly, he couldn’t stand the name Xue Xingqi gave him.
“Xiao Zhi (Little Straight), come here. Try some fresh Timothy hay.”
Xue Xingqi’s voice was full of mirth. The moment he decided to adopt the rabbit, he had already thought of a name. “Xiao Zhi Nan” (Little Straight Man), shortened to “Xiao Zhi.” It suited that person’s personality perfectly.
“Xiao Zhi, come drink some water. Which bowl do you like?”
“Xiao Zhi, don’t chew the sofa. The sofa is dirty.”
Zhi, Zhi, Zhi are you ever going to stop with the ‘straight’ thing?!
Finally, Xue Xingqi didn’t even go out to play on Saturdays or Sundays. He spent all day accompanying the rabbit, which meant Pei Nan couldn’t find a single chance to slip away. He hadn’t even checked his phone; people probably thought he had gone missing.
In the blink of an eye, it was Monday. Pei Nan had fully recovered. He could transform back into a human at any time now. He planned to wait for Xue Xingqi to leave, follow him to school, and then crouch at the door in the evening to be “picked up” again. Then he could surely complete the mission.
Pei Nan lay leisurely in his nest, dreaming of his future beautiful life.
Unexpectedly, Xue Xingqi received a package and spent time installing a camera in the house!
“419, what do I do?”
Transforming into a human was now impossible. Even if he could get out, he couldn’t explain how the rabbit had vanished.
“Xiao Zhi, come pick some snacks you like. You’re coming to school with me tomorrow. I’ve prepared a set of supplies for you in the dorm. We’ll come back next weekend.”
After setting up the camera and connecting it to his phone, Xue Xingqi ignored it. He turned around, scooped up the rabbit, and went to the dedicated cabinet to pick out food.
Xue Xingqi had figured this out over the last two days: if he picked based on his own preference, Xiao Zhi wouldn’t eat a thing.
Pei Nan hadn’t expected Xue Xingqi to be so proactive. Before he could even think of a solution, a path had opened up. He immediately used the momentum to dive into the snack pile, acting like a general inspecting troops, and picked out all his favorite treats.
Seeing this, Xue Xingqi only smiled. He lifted the rabbit and cradled it against his arm, acting completely like a doting owner.
The next day, Xue Xingqi woke up and set off before the rabbit was even awake. Without the rabbit noticing, he brought it right into the classroom.
According to Lagrange’s Mean Value Theorem, we first find…”
In a daze, Pei Nan heard the Calculus theorems. His four legs kicked out in excitement, and he launched himself unfortunately, he chose the wrong direction. His half-asleep head hit the side of the desk with a thud, making him whimper in pain.
Quickly, a warm hand reached in, stroking his head soothingly. The familiar scent brought a sufficient sense of security. After Pei Nan calmed down, he realized what a stupid thing he had just done.
Wait, it was all this pervert Xue Xingqi’s fault! Bringing a rabbit to class and a Calculus class at that!
He resentfully opened his mouth and bit Xue Xingqi’s finger, grinding his teeth against it, though he held back and didn’t use force.
Xue Xingqi glanced into the desk cavity, mouthing with a grin: So well-behaved.
The rabbit fumed: Well-behaved my ass!
