- Chapter 7 - Day 7 of Running Away with a Bun
Pei Nan could no longer withstand the nagging of the “love-brain” little ball, 419. After finishing his afternoon classes, he shouldered his bag and headed to the neighboring university.
Only upon arriving did he realize the neighboring campus was terrifyingly vast. He walked for twenty minutes without even spotting a teaching building; it felt as though he were wandering through someone’s “Imperial Garden.” Every few steps, there was a pavilion, a lake, or a small bridge over flowing water framed by weeping willows. It was beautiful, but Pei Nan was in no mood to appreciate it.
Somewhat annoyed, he brushed aside a willow branch that was blocking his view and came to a halt in the middle of an arched stone bridge.
“I think we should forget it for today. There’s no one here to lead the way, and I have no idea where that Hummer guy is. I shouldn’t have listened to your nonsense and come here without any preparation.”
419 swayed its spherical body. “This is a conclusion based on probability! You two will definitely meet!”
Pei Nan nodded perfunctorily. “Since we’ll meet sooner or later, I might as well go back and wait.”
Before 419 could think of a clever way to keep Pei Nan from leaving, the young man’s phone rang. The coach wanted everyone to gather back for a meeting in half an hour.
Pei Nan flourished his phone triumphantly. “Now, this is official business. Don’t blame me for not being serious about the task.”
419 hummed. “I’ve never seen you so proactive about meetings before.”
“I’m not proactive about meetings, but I am proactive about training.”
“If you were even a little proactive about the task, I wouldn’t have to worry so much and factor in all these probability issues!”
“You really are persistent…”
“And thus, I shall have an answer!”
Pei Nan frowned and began to argue with 419. He believed 419 was far too much of a “love-brain,” recklessly categorizing every messy coincidence as “romance” especially considering he was a man and the other person was also a man.
“This is a logic error,” 419 argued. “Think about it from a different perspective. If the other person were a girl and you ran into her several times without any preparation, what would you think?”
Pei Nan opened his mouth to retort, but his brain actually stalled for a second. 419 seized the opportunity to keep chattering.
“See? Your subconscious also thinks you two are fated!”
Pei Nan stubbornly replied, “Then I’m fated with that Hummer!”
“And who does the Hummer belong to? It belongs to the person you are fated with!”
Pei Nan’s face turned grim. He shouldn’t have argued with 419. He should have realized long ago that “love-brain logic” was invincible on Earth.
As 419 set off celebratory fireworks in his mind, Pei Nan looked away out of respect for his own sanity. Glancing ahead, he happened to spot Yang Fan, who was also heading toward the training hall.
Pei Nan was quite pleased. He quickened his pace to walk side-by-side with him.
Talking to a person was much better than talking to 419 and risking catching its “love-brain” infection. His captain certainly didn’t look like the romantic type.
Yang Fan turned to look at Pei Nan with a smile. His gaze lingered briefly on Pei Nan’s chest before he spoke warmly. “Coming straight here with your bag did you just finish class?”
“No, class ended a while ago. I just didn’t go back to the dorm. Captain, do you know what the meeting is about?”
Yang Fan curled his lips. His peripheral vision remained fixed on Pei Nan’s chest, admiring the shape of the pectoral muscles being strained against the backpack straps. “It should be about the competition. The University League is about to start, and the qualifiers are next month. Old Wang will explain in detail during the meeting. You should make sure to seize this opportunity. Among the freshmen, I see you as the most hardworking and talented.”
Pei Nan knew his own level well and didn’t let Yang Fan’s praise go to his head. After all, if he were truly that talented, he would have gone straight through youth training into the national team. Thus, he simply smiled. “Everyone is very skilled, especially the seniors on the team.”
Yang Fan looked back with feigned surprise, openly scanning Pei Nan’s entire body. “That doesn’t sound like you.”
He reached out and patted Pei Nan’s lower back, his expression turning serious. “With this kind of physical condition, you’d be top-tier anywhere. If you haven’t produced results, perhaps you haven’t truly recognized your own potential.”
Pei Nan hadn’t expected Yang Fan to touch his waist. Even less did he expect that the moment the palm made contact, a sensation like an electric shock surged through his body. The subsequent wave of weakness nearly caused him to lose his composure. He breathed sharply twice, gritting his teeth desperately to keep his legs from buckling and kneeling right there in front of Yang Fan.
It happened so fast that 419 was shocked. However, before it could act, Pei Nan had already regained control of his body through sheer willpower. His heart was still racing, but he adjusted himself silently, thinking it was a relief he’d held steady and hadn’t accidentally “bowed” to the guy. He completely missed the strange look in the eyes of the man beside him.
419 scanned Pei Nan’s body repeatedly and also failed to notice that Yang Fan the instigator was breathing just as heavily. Yang Fan even let out two soft, echoing breaths in sync with Pei Nan, a peculiar light flickering in his narrowed eyes.
He licked his lips. His parched throat could no longer be moistened by simple swallowing; he was almost impatient to “taste” Pei Nan.
With such a handsome face, the flush of rising passion would surely be breathtaking.
He moved a bit closer, inhaling the scent surrounding Pei Nan, and asked with concern, “What’s wrong, Pei Nan? Is the training volume too high? Are you injured?”
Pei Nan had been a bit embarrassed, but Yang Fan’s words immediately made him smile. He felt grateful for Yang Fan’s thoughtfulness in providing such a perfect excuse. “Maybe. It was fine before.”
“Your body is the capital of your revolution; you must take good care of it. Go see the team doctor later for a massage. You haven’t tried it yet, right? Our team doctor is an old expert from the city, hired specially after retirement. He looks old, but he has incredible hand strength. One session makes you feel good for half a month. The boys on the team usually howl like ghosts when he presses on them, but they always want to go back next time.”
Yang Fan stared at Pei Nan’s reddened earlobes, the blood in his own body rushing downward.
Pei Nan grew even more enthusiastic. “Then I’ll go try it and see if the effect is really that good.”
“If you’re going, remember to call me to go with you.”
“Sure,” Pei Nan agreed readily.
Yang Fan smiled. Straight guys were great they had zero defenses against members of the same sex.
So straight, yet so enticing. It was as if he were intentionally provoking someone to commit a crime.
So, I suppose it wouldn’t be my fault if I make a move.
Anyway, it’s not like I can get a kid out of him. When I get bored, we’ll just break up. It won’t stop this handsome junior from getting married and having kids later.
Yang Fan suggested considerately, “Internal injuries are hard to diagnose. Why don’t we go right after the meeting? Solving the problem early will help you get good results in the tournament.”
Pei Nan thought about it. He had no other plans for the evening besides training, so he decided that there was no time like the present. He would let Yang Fan take him today.
By the time the two reached the meeting room, almost everyone was there. Old Wang was holding a folder and lecturing someone. Yang Fan and Pei Nan took separate seats.
The meeting was indeed about the University League. Old Wang and the coaching staff had developed a more detailed training plan for them. After the meeting, Old Wang specifically kept Pei Nan behind for a talk, earnestly handing him a piece of paper and telling him to consider it carefully.
419 felt its vision go dark. That dense schedule of time slots occupied almost all of Pei Nan’s extracurricular hours. If he trained like this, Pei Nan would definitely turn into nothing but a rabbit.
“Host, Host! This time we really can’t delay anymore! If you don’t finish the task this week, you’ll have even less time during next week’s intensive training. You can’t exactly compete while being a rabbit!”
This time, Pei Nan didn’t need 419 to tell him how dire the situation was.
He thought for a moment and then asked Chen Bin for the account of the neighboring school’s “Confession Wall.” He planned to check if the Hummer guy was the campus heartthrob first. If he was, Pei Nan wouldn’t have to try and find him by trial and error.
Seeing Pei Nan acting so methodically, 419’s swaying mechanical heart finally settled. It seemed its host was reliable after all.
“Found him. It’s him.”
As soon as Pei Nan entered the Confession Wall, he saw a photo of the Hummer guy. The background looked like a library. The caption was very “fangirl-ish,” claiming they would pay a high price to find a way to become the campus heartthrob’s girlfriend.
Pei Nan scrolled through the comments. After dozens of posts, he finally saw a name that likely belonged to the man: Xue Xingqi.
“Can you locate Xue Xingqi?”
419’s voice was small and hollow. “I can’t.”
Although Pei Nan had expected this answer, he couldn’t help but sigh. Aside from giving him tasks, chatting with him, and reminding him he was about to turn into a rabbit, this little ball had no particularly practical functions.
Fortunately, Pei Nan had lived for so many years being self-reliant, so he didn’t find it too inconvenient.
“Based on last week’s experience, I analyzed that he is likely like me he goes home on the weekends. So, the only time left to act is tomorrow and the day after.”
“What kind of situation would make a person pick someone else up and take them home?”
“That doesn’t sound like helping; it sounds like a crime.”
Pei Nan’s head began to ache from thinking. 419 jumped in at the right time. “If he won’t pick up a person, he can pick up a rabbit!”
Pei Nan’s head ached even more. He would have to turn into a rabbit first and then be “picked up.” Why did he choose this path? It would have been better to just grow a tail and be done with it.
When Yang Fan came out of the meeting and saw Pei Nan’s silhouette sitting on the steps waiting for him, the desires he had just suppressed began to surge again.
Level shoulders and a narrow waist the feel of a hand sliding over them from behind must be fantastic.
Yang Fan was in high spirits. Seeing Pei Nan’s frowning face, his mood improved even further, yet his tone remained calm. “Why the long face? Are you worried about the tight training schedule?”
“A little, but I can overcome it.” Pei Nan gave a small smile and stood up. “Let’s go. Massage first.”
Yang Fan paused for a moment, feigning difficulty. “I was just about to tell you the team doctor knew there was a meeting today and left early.”
He lifted his wrist to check the time. “I’m sorry for making you wait so long. Let me buy you a late-night snack.”
After the snack, I’ll have a taste of Pei Nan.
Yang Fan originally thought he could endure a bit longer and plot slowly, but every part of Pei Nan’s body fit his aesthetic so perfectly. Even a mere silhouette left him craving and restless. Even if he couldn’t “eat” the person yet, he could take the opportunity to snatch some benefits.
Pei Nan sighed. Without much thought, he declined Yang Fan’s invitation. “I’m sorry, Captain. I’m a bit tired today. Besides, didn’t I say last time that I would treat you? If you’re free this weekend, let’s have dinner then.”
Yang Fan’s heart tightened. He discreetly observed Pei Nan’s expression but found nothing unusual. He then smiled and agreed. “Alright, I’ll wait for your message then.”
Their dorms were in different directions, so they parted ways after walking a short distance.
Pei Nan couldn’t explain why he had just refused. Perhaps he really was tired, or perhaps the moment he turned around, he instinctively recoiled from the look in Yang Fan’s eyes. He irritably kicked a stone at his feet, deeply loathing his current suspicious and indecisive self.
“419, will I return to my old life after finishing the task?”
“As long as the Host’s heart is firm, you can!”
Pei Nan gave a cold snort. Those words were better left unsaid. “Fine, you can dismiss yourself. Tomorrow, after I pick up my car, I’m going straight to the neighboring school to find him.”
The next day, Pei Nan got up early. When he arrived at the 4S dealership to pick up his car, they had just opened for business. His mother had said during the summer break that she would buy him a German luxury car and let him choose. He had picked a BMW SUV. The black body was so shiny it could serve as a mirror. After picking it up, Pei Nan wanted to drive a few laps, but the city traffic was too heavy and there were too many red lights. Driving wasn’t satisfying at all.
Returning to the University Town, he went straight to the neighboring campus, thinking he might be able to corner Xue Xingqi in a classroom.
Before going to sleep last night, he had gone “undercover” on the Confession Wall and specifically memorized Xue Xingqi’s classes and classrooms for today. Now, he just lacked a reason to be “picked up” and taken home by Xue Xingqi.
When Pei Nan arrived at the classroom door, he was stunned by the scene before him.
Do the students at Jinda University love learning this much? Is it necessary to stand in the hallway to listen to a lecture if there are no seats?
Pei Nan couldn’t understand it. He felt completely out of place at Jinda. He hesitated, standing still, not wanting to take another step forward.
“Students in the back row, sit down! Students in the hallway, disperse quickly! Don’t block the corridor and affect others.” A stern-looking old man walked out of the classroom. “Will looking at a handsome guy keep you from failing your exams?!”
The crowd in the hallway scattered in an instant. In the blink of an eye, only Pei Nan was left. The old man adjusted his glasses, ignored him, and went back inside.
Pei Nan breathed a sigh of relief. He peeked into the classroom through the crack in the door and even called 419 out to help find Xue Xingqi. However, the man and the system searched for several minutes without finding him.
“Strange. Where is he?”
Pei Nan pulled the back door shut and took two steps back, unexpectedly colliding full-force with someone behind him.
He could feel the other person’s arms tightly encircling his waist. His back was pressed intimately against the other’s chest, and body heat transferred rapidly between them. As he jerked his head around, his forehead hit the other man’s bridge of the nose with a “thud.” Pei Nan’s own nose felt a phantom sting of sympathy.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Are you okay?”
Pei Nan struggled out of the person’s embrace. His hands reflexively cupped the other man’s face, fearing he had caused a nosebleed. He even tilted the man’s head up slightly.
Only after doing all this did Pei Nan notice the other person’s appearance.
This man with the sword-like eyebrows, starry eyes, high nose, and thin lips wasn’t he the target he had searched everywhere for, Xue Xingqi?
He pulled his hands away with a shua and even rubbed them against his own clothes twice.
That “I just touched something filthy” expression almost made Xue Xingqi laugh out of anger.
“Classmate, we meet again.”
