- Chapter 6 - Day 6 of Running Away with the Ball
Monday mornings were usually the busiest for Pei Nan.
After waking up, he would typically go for a run around the neighborhood. When he returned, he would either buy breakfast for Ms. Zhu Yun or cook a meal for her himself. In short, he had to serve the “Empress Dowager” of his household well and receive her loving reminders before he could head out with peace of mind.
“A boy should be generous. When you go out to eat or play, remember to pick up the tab. Don’t let a girl lose face for no reason. You’re so handsome, so smile more it makes Mom happy just looking at you. Also, the car I bought for you should arrive this week. Once you pick it up, follow the traffic rules when you’re out with friends. Absolutely no driving after drinking; take a taxi, call a designated driver, or just stay at a nearby hotel, okay?”
Pei Nan let his mother pinch his face into a forced smile. “Got it.”
“Work is going to be a bit busy lately; I might be on business trips for several weeks in a row. Take care of yourself, okay?”
“I know, Mom.”
Zhu Yun looked at her tall, handsome son with immense satisfaction, secretly delighted by her own talent for giving birth to and raising such a child. After admiring him enough, she finally showed mercy and let him go to school.
Because of the lengthy lecture before leaving, Pei Nan no longer had time to wait for the bus and slowly ride to school. Coincidentally, the first class on Monday was taught by their department head a “devil” elective that featured mandatory attendance every single time. Pei Nan had plenty of reason to suspect the department head chose this time slot on purpose. To ensure he didn’t fail at the end of the semester, he opted to hail a ride.
The ride-share car arrived quickly. Just as Pei Nan reached the neighborhood entrance, the car pulled up. The driver flicked away a cigarette butt and greeted the passenger practicedly.
Pei Nan responded while pulling out his phone to reply to messages.
The driver gradually fell silent, and Pei Nan leaned back against the seat to doze off for a moment. After an unknown amount of time, the car jolted violently. Pei Nan snapped his eyes open, only to see the front of the car pressed tightly against the rear of the vehicle ahead a rear-end collision.
The driver had already unbuckled his seatbelt to go negotiate. Pei Nan couldn’t just sit there, so he got out as well, only to see that familiar Hummer again.
This time, Pei Nan’s heart actually ached for the vehicle. He leaned in close to the point of impact to inspect it, finally letting out a slow sigh of relief. A Hummer was truly a Hummer; it was essentially unscathed, while the taxi’s front end was dented.
“I’m really sorry, young man. Today I really… Sigh… Look at the car, I’ll definitely pay whatever is owed. Can we settle this privately?” The driver rubbed his hands together, sweating profusely in anxiety. His eyes, far from being droopy now, were wide as saucers.
Xue Xingqi looked at him, then at the taxi, his peripheral vision catching the boy standing nearby with pricked ears listening to their conversation. He didn’t make things difficult for the man. “I took a look just now; my car is fine. No need for compensation. However, I’m afraid you’ll have to handle your own car yourself. I noticed your state just now was quite dangerous. Drowsy driving is a no-go; you should park the car and get some rest first.”
“But I haven’t finished this trip yet, if it doesn’t affect…”
Hearing this, Pei Nan stepped in. He moved between the two of them. “Brother, school isn’t far from here. I’ll just call another ride. You should really go rest.”
“Then, little brother, I won’t charge you for this trip. Show me your payment code, I’ll refund you.”
Pei Nan waved his hand. “Brother, just don’t push yourself so hard next time.”
The driver was also badly shaken. “I won’t, I won’t. No matter how much you earn, it’s no good if you lose your life. Thank you both today, thank you.”
“Everyone has moments of inconvenience. Brother, I have class for the first period, I’m heading out first.” Pei Nan had sharp eyes and happened to see a bus that went directly to his school approaching. Before his voice even faded, he had already run toward the bus stop ahead and vanished into the vehicle in a flash.
It was fortunate that the road here was wide; otherwise, the traffic would have been backed up during the time they took to resolve the issue.
Xue Xingqi checked the time and said goodbye to the driver as well.
He got into his car, started the engine, and drove toward the school, but he couldn’t help but recall the boy he had just seen.
The calves were white and long, the Achilles tendons were high he ran like a snow leopard.
He saw the face more clearly this time; he was quite handsome.
Except he was too “straight” so straight that he drooled over the car and didn’t notice the person at all.
Xue Xingqi found it amusing, yet a ripple of emotion stirred in his heart. The feeling was fleeting, so fast that even he didn’t notice the trace of “pity” hidden within it.
After boarding the bus, Pei Nan stepped into the classroom just in the nick of time. After roll call, Chen Bin, sitting next to him, pushed a textbook toward him and whispered, “What happened? I was almost ready to risk my life to answer for you.”
“Got delayed by something, no big deal.” Pei Nan lowered his voice and gave a brief account of the morning’s events. As they talked, their focus began to drift, and they started chatting about cars. If it weren’t for the department head’s “Gaze of Death” being too powerful, Pei Nan and Chen Bin could have chatted for the entire period.
Finally enduring until the end of class, Pei Nan and Chen Bin headed straight for the cafeteria.
This lifestyle of attending class, eating, training, and sleeping was something Pei Nan was very familiar with and loved. It felt like a displaced person finally returning to the correct track; his entire body radiated comfort. When 419 arrived with an urgent system message, the little yellow ball was almost turning red with anxiety.
Task: Please be “picked up” and taken home by the neighboring school’s grass (hottest guy). Time limit: 30 days. Countdown: 15 days remaining.
“Host, why haven’t you taken action yet? Have you met the school grass? Have you thought about how to get him to take you home?”
Pei Nan was lying on his bed reviewing his own video footage. Hearing this, he only lifted an eyelid. “No.”
As luck would have it, ever since 419 left, he hadn’t turned into a rabbit again. Without the influence of the rabbit transformation, he had unconsciously increased his training, filling his schedule to the brim. Where would he find the time to look for some “school grass”?
419 was so stifled by Pei Nan’s response it didn’t want to speak. It pulled up the task panel to take a look, only to discover that the total progress bar for the task line had actually moved up a notch!
It immediately informed Pei Nan of this major discovery.
“Host, Host! What have you done lately? Have you met anyone? The task line moved!”
Pei Nan raised an eyebrow, quite surprised. He finally spared a glance away from the video to look at the task panel. The progress bar shown there certainly couldn’t be faked, and the system couldn’t possibly fake it for him. After thinking it over, he narrowed it down to the “Hummer Guy” he met Monday morning.
“I’ve been stuck at school these past few days. The only unusual experience was Monday morning. As for whether it’s him, I’ll find a time to test it later.” Pei Nan’s expression was serious, even bordering on displeased. “I thought the Hummer guy had a decent character, but I didn’t expect him to be a ‘scumbag in a suit’ (beast in human clothing).”
419 was checking the memories related to Pei Nan and the Hummer guy. When it discovered that Pei Nan had already encountered the other party three times, the entire ball turned pink. “Heavens, does this not count as love? In my previous departments, this kind of deep destiny would mean you two could get married on the spot!”
Pei Nan: “If you can’t speak properly, shut up!”
