“Are you kidding me?”
Pei Nan didn’t believe it for a second. With his frequency of swimming every day and occasional gym sessions, how could he possibly be fat? This was likely just a trick Xue Xingqi was using to attract his attention bluffing him so he wouldn’t focus on the movie. He wasn’t going to fall for it. Just as Xue Xingqi was about to speak again, Pei Nan reached out and covered Xue Xingqi’s mouth.
“Wait until I finish the movie.”
Xue Xingqi shrugged; if he couldn’t speak, he wouldn’t. Regardless, holding him felt quite comfortable. He wrapped his arms around Pei Nan’s entire body, resting his chin on his shoulder. Every now and then, he would kiss Pei Nan’s cheek or ear, sniffing here and there in short, he didn’t stay idle for a single moment.
It made Pei Nan feel as if there were a large dog leaning against his back. Taking advantage of a dull moment in the film, he paused the movie and turned around to reason with Xue Xingqi.
“When you’re in class, do I ever disturb you? Don’t I always let you listen to the professor properly? When you’re working, I don’t disturb you either; I just sit quietly next to you playing games. Why is it that when I watch a movie, you’re either kissing me or playing with my hands? My hands are as big as yours compared to a girl’s, they aren’t soft or fragrant. What’s so fun about them?”
Xue Xingqi listened to the first half of the speech and felt that he was perhaps being a bit excessive and clingy. However, that last sentence about “a girl’s hands” set him off. Such a detailed description, such a vivid memory had he held many girls’ hands before?
The moment the words left Pei Nan’s mouth, he saw Xue Xingqi’s expression turn cold. When that “high-altitude flower” beauty was stripped of its smile, it became like the eyes of Medusa one look and you’d be petrified. It was icy and completely detached.
He had almost never seen Xue Xingqi like this. Just as he was about to reflect on whether he had spoken too harshly, Xue Xingqi softened his expression again and leaned in to kiss him.
Pei Nan breathed a sigh of relief; it was good that he wasn’t angry. He returned the kiss, lingering for a few moments as they pulled apart. He reached out his hand and held it in front of Xue Xingqi. “Um, do you still want to play with it?”
This was the olive branch he was offering.
After Xue Xingqi took his hand, Pei Nan leaned back against him with relief. “I’m not like you. You’re smart and learn everything quickly; you can even multi-task. But I can’t. Ever since I was a kid, if I watch a cartoon or a TV show, I have to follow it from start to finish. If I miss even one sentence, I feel uncomfortable. In severe cases, I’ll drop a show entirely just because I missed one minute… I didn’t mean it just now.”
“I don’t blame you. Watch your movie. I’ll just hold you like this. Are you cold? Do you want a blanket?” Xue Xingqi lowered his eyes, looking at his hand interlaced with Pei Nan’s.
“I don’t need a blanket. It’s warm enough with the two of us huddled together.” Subconsciously, Pei Nan didn’t want Xue Xingqi to leave his side. He instinctively tightened his grip, and feeling this, Xue Xingqi’s heart lightened considerably.
“Alright, go ahead and watch.”
The pause was cancelled, and the movie began to play again. Pei Nan was soon immersed in the plot, following the protagonist’s puzzle-solving.
Only then did Xue Xingqi look up at Pei Nan’s face. In those bright eyes, the scenes of the movie flickered one after another. For a split second just now, he had seen himself in those eyes nearly drowned by jealousy. If he hadn’t seen Pei Nan’s pupils contract and his body recoil, causing him to snap out of it, he didn’t know how far out of control the situation would have escalated.
What right did he have to blame Pei Nan for having liked girls in the past?
He knew this when he first fell for Pei Nan, and he thought he was fully prepared. But when faced with the reality, Xue Xingqi realized that this wasn’t a game where winning or losing didn’t matter, nor was it a transaction where responsibilities and interests were clearly defined in black and white. He had vastly overestimated himself and underestimated Pei Nan’s place in his heart.
When you love someone, how could you not want to possess every part of them?
Very gently, Xue Xingqi kissed the nape of Pei Nan’s neck. The loose pajamas even exposed a large portion of his shoulder. Xue Xingqi distributed his affection equally, covering every inch with his lip prints. Pei Nan seemed tickled by the soft kisses, shrinking his neck slightly to stop Xue Xingqi from continuing.
“Wait for me, I’ll be finished in a bit,” Pei Nan said while watching. “We can kiss properly once it’s over.”
No one knew better than he did how much Xue Xingqi loved kissing and hugging; he was more clingy than a high school girl. The girlfriends Pei Nan had in the past involved nothing more than walking them home or eating together in the cafeteria, and even holding hands had to be done while hiding from the homeroom teacher and the dean. Those relationships never lasted long for various reasons, and later, rumors spread that he was a “scumbag.” Heaven knows it was always the other party who initiated the breakup.
Strictly speaking, Xue Xingqi was his true first love.
People always have many filters regarding their first love, and Pei Nan was no exception. Usually, he only got annoyed when Xue Xingqi went too hard and he couldn’t get out of bed for class the next day annoyed to the point of missing the days when he was just a rabbit. After all, a rabbit didn’t understand anything; it could just eat, sleep, and play with toys, and it wouldn’t be punished for acting up.
He wondered who Xue Xingqi liked more: him or the rabbit.
Pei Nan found it a bit difficult to keep watching the movie. Having zoned out just now, he had no idea what had happened in the last few minutes of the plot. His mind was filled with Xue Xingqi’s shadow. He sighed, reached for the remote, and decisively exited the movie.
Nuzzling Pei Nan’s face, Xue Xingqi asked in confusion, “Why aren’t you watching anymore?”
“It’s boring. Come here and kiss me.” Pei Nan wrapped his arms around the back of Xue Xingqi’s neck and pressed his lips against his.
Xue Xingqi’s eyes crinkled with a wide smile, and his gloomy mood instantly cleared. Who said men don’t understand their partner’s thoughts? It all depends on whether they care.
In the blink of an eye, Christmas arrived. It was Pei Nan’s first time celebrating a holiday with a guy. He had spent a long time researching guides online and even recruited Chen Bin and Yaoyao to help brainstorm. In the end, Yaoyao was the most reliable, providing Pei Nan with a detailed checklist of activities.
On Christmas Eve, Pei Nan took a shower at home. As he passed the bathroom mirror, he caught a glimpse of himself. Even though he had already walked past, his feet seemed to have a mind of their own and stepped back to the mirror.
Looking at his slightly protruding lower abdomen, his mood began to collapse.
“It must be because I’ve been eating too much and too well lately, and my training volume has decreased. At worst, I’ll start working out again tomorrow.”
Pei Nan muttered to himself while touching his belly, his tone firm and confident, as if trying to convince someone. However, his expression shifted between calm and distorted he looked quite conflicted.
Finally, unable to take it anymore, he summoned 419 back from his mother’s side.
Having basically completed its mission, 419 had a lot more freedom. It had been having so much fun staying with Zhu Yun that it had almost forgotten about Pei Nan until it received his message.
Upon returning, it saw something extraordinary.
“Didn’t I tell you to use contraceptives until your mark disappeared?” 419 was even more devastated than Pei Nan. Its mechanical body emitted a flickering red light as if it were about to shatter. The flickering was quite specific, sending out an “S.O.S.” distress signal in Morse code. The moment Pei Nan looked over, it began scurrying around the room.
“Damn it! I’ll dismantle you first, then I’ll go dismantle Xue Xingqi!”
“You can’t do that, Host! Protecting the fetus is more important!”
419 was terrified of Pei Nan’s “sharpening the knife” appearance. It had planned for everything but hadn’t expected a mishap right as the mission was ending. Now, it didn’t even dare to hope for mission completion; it just wanted to live out its days in this world.
Pei Nan had a premonition before summoning 419, but once it was confirmed that he was actually pregnant, he still felt at a loss. It wasn’t that he wasn’t careful—he knew his physical condition and always made sure Xue Xingqi used protection. Only a few times when they were fooling around in the kitchen and didn’t have anything on hand… it was likely those few times that allowed a “fish to slip through the net.”
Pei Nan was no longer in the mood for a date. He sat on the sofa, clutching his head in heavy silence. How did he end up pregnant?
When the appointment time arrived and Xue Xingqi couldn’t find him or reach him by phone, he rushed home in a panic.
“Nannan, why aren’t the lights on?” Upon entering, Xue Xingqi saw Pei Nan sitting on the sofa, still wearing their matching couple’s loungewear. It looked like he hadn’t moved for a long time. His movement as he looked up was laced with an imperceptible stiffness. Xue Xingqi felt apprehensive, wondering why the usually bright and optimistic Pei Nan was acting this way.
Looking at Xue Xingqi standing against the light, Pei Nan felt the light from the hallway was a bit piercing. He raised a hand to block it, and Xue Xingqi stepped in and closed the door. After his eyes adjusted to the darkness of the living room, he walked over to the sofa.
“Nannan, did something happen?” Xue Xingqi asked after much consideration. “If there’s a problem, tell me. We’ll solve it together.”
Most things in the world involve money, power, or love. Xue Xingqi might not be able to claim everything, but he had confidence in money and power. As long as Pei Nan had feelings for him, he would be the happiest person in the world.
He took Pei Nan’s hands, which were folded over his lower abdomen. His voice was soft and gentle, afraid of triggering Pei Nan. “Baby, don’t scare me like this.”
“I’m having a child.” Pei Nan’s voice was very quiet. He had thought about it all evening and finally decided to tell Xue Xingqi. He believed Xue Xingqi would make the same decision as him. But a man getting pregnant was ultimately not a normal occurrence, and saying it out loud felt like a joke.
Just as Pei Nan thought it was impossible for Xue Xingqi to believe him, Xue Xingqi suddenly asked, “When did this happen?”
“Uh… probably about two months ago.”
Two months ago… Pei Nan had been with him the whole time. When would he have had the time? Was he set up by someone? In an instant, many thoughts flashed through Xue Xingqi’s mind, but the most important thing right now was Pei Nan’s attitude. Xue Xingqi forced himself to speak. “Do you… do you want it?”
Pei Nan was confused. He asked back, “Don’t you want your own child?”
Pei Nan’s thinking was still very direct; he believed a child was the crystallization of love, the continuation of his and his lover’s bloodline, and a part of his connection and meaning in the world. It was just as his mother, Ms. Zhu Yun, had told him: he was a gift that would grow.
Xue Xingqi looked at him silently, trying his best to use a nonchalant tone. “You really want to keep it?”
In a place where Pei Nan couldn’t see, he clenched his damp palms tightly. His chest throbbed violently, and he didn’t know what answer he was hoping for. If Pei Nan wanted to keep this child, how could he? His heart was so soft would he be able to part with the child’s mother? Would he have the heart to let the child grow up without a family? The beautiful family life Pei Nan once envisioned would he marry the child’s mother for the sake of the child?
Then what about him?
What should he do?
