She’s Fiercer Than Zombies - Chapter 47
Perched atop the wall, Qiao Gaogao and the others observed the chaos outside. Her sharp eyes quickly picked out a familiar figure standing at the rear of the opposing ranks. Her exceptional vision even allowed her to discern the deep furrows etched between the man’s brows, a testament to his frequent scowling.
Qiao Gaogao’s expression turned cold. This was the same man who had led the ambush against them back in S City.
The commotion below had escalated into a full-blown confrontation. Yinxi watched the scene unfold but made no move to call off the zombies. For one, Tai’an was their common enemy; for another, the zombies’ deep-seated resentment toward Tai’an needed an outlet.
The Tai’an forces were in disarray. Though they had banded together to fend off the zombie onslaught, they were falling one by one. It had never crossed their minds that the zombies who had escaped Tai’an Tower would reappear in H City!
The man’s face was grim. He had assumed that with their current strength, they could at least pressure the Tianxia Base into handing over Yinxi. But the sudden appearance of these zombies had completely derailed his plans.
He looked up at Yinxi and the others on the wall and shouted, “Xiao Yin, I think we should stop and talk this over!”
Hearing his words, Yinxi trembled with rage. She could hardly believe the audacity of this man arriving with hostile intentions, only to propose negotiations the moment he found himself in a tight spot.
Talk things over.
If they had no means to fight back, would there even be a chance for “talks”?
Qiao Gaogao quietly took her hand, offering comfort. Though her own face was flushed with anger, she tried her best to soothe Yinxi.
Meanwhile, Qiao Muyi was carefully observing the Tai’an ranks. Gaogao and the others had long since shared their suspicions that Tai’an Biotech was behind the catastrophe. Now, watching these people, she couldn’t help but wonder what kind of mindset had driven them to create such a virus, forcing all of humanity to pay the price for their actions.
Qiao’s father stood like a black tower, his imposing figure radiating intimidation. “Talk, my foot!” he bellowed, his voice booming. “How dare you have the nerve to ask for talks!”
The man’s frown deepened at the insult. Watching two more ability users fall, he felt as if his heart were bleeding. Desperate, he gritted his teeth and threatened, “If you don’t stop now, don’t blame us for resorting to missile strikes!”
“What happens next will be out of my hands!”
His words sent a chill through everyone. If the enemy truly possessed missiles, their base had no means of interception they would be sitting ducks!
But how could a biotech company have access to missiles?
Yet Qiao Gaogao and the others found the claim somewhat plausible. They already knew Tai’an had connections with the authorities. With official backing, they would be even more unrestrained in their actions.
“You have no shame!” Qiao Muyi spat coldly.
The man snorted. “We’re doing this for everyone! If we don’t develop a serum, we’ll all die!”
Qiao’s father trembled with rage at the shameless remark. He turned, ready to charge down and pummel the man, but a sharp rebuke from Qiao Muyi froze him in place.
Yet he was still panting heavily with rage.
Qiao Mu turned her head to look at Yinxi, who already knew what to do without being told. With a sharp, piercing shriek from her, the zombies below halted their movements, stepping back slightly from the Tai’an group but still glaring at them with venomous hatred.
Only after the zombies stopped did the Tai’an members pause as well. Their faces were deathly pale these zombies were all in the early stages of infection, yet their evolution speed was unnaturally fast, far surpassing what ordinary ability users could keep up with. Had they not outnumbered the zombies, it would have been a one-sided slaughter!
Even as the zombies retreated, they dragged the corpses of their fallen companions with them, refusing to return them. They pulled the bodies aside, gnawing on them while continuing to fix the survivors with that same malevolent stare. The gruesome scene left the survivors deeply unsettled, sending chills down their spines.
Even the man who had appeared relatively composed paled at the sight. He wanted to ask Yinxi to return the bodies, but seeing the vengeful ferocity with which the zombies tore into the flesh, he feared that demanding the corpses back would provoke another bloodbath.
Forcing himself to look away from the zombies, the man raised his head toward Yinxi on the city wall and shouted, “Xiao Yin, I hope you’ll think about it think about the survivors still living in fear. We mean you no harm. We just need your cooperation to develop a serum and end this catastrophe!”
“Bullshit!” Qiao Guoguo erupted in anger. “Living in fear? And who caused that fear? It was you! How dare you stand there and spout such self-righteous nonsense!”
She was truly witnessing the pinnacle of human audacity.
The man’s expression turned stern, and he replied in a serious tone, “Miss Qiao, please don’t make baseless accusations. We only wish to use our expertise to develop a serum that will benefit everyone!”
Qiao Guoguo let out a scornful laugh, her expression clearly conveying her disbelief.
The man, however, displayed remarkable composure, completely unfazed by her mockery. Though his next words seemed directed at Yinxi, his true audience was the survivors listening nearby.
“Xiao Yin, since the virus outbreak, you must be aware of your unique constitution. Now, you’ve evolved to the point where you’re no different from an ordinary person. Your special physique is the key to developing the serum. Just think, once the serum is ready, no one will have to fear zombie attacks anymore!”
He paused, a faint smile curling at the corners of his lips. “And perhaps even those already infected could return to normal, just like you.”
At these words, Qiao Mu and the others exchanged uneasy glances. The man was clearly exploiting the survivors’ self-interest to pressure Yinxi.
After all, every survivor had witnessed friends or family turn into zombies. Now, they were being told that their loved ones might be restored to their former selves, how could anyone not be tempted?
Many would rather cling to false hope than let such a chance slip away.
Yet as the person involved, Yinxi showed no expression on her face, completely indifferent to the gazes of others. She spoke calmly, “A hunter telling their prey, ‘I will bring all your dead companions back to life’ don’t you find your own words ridiculous when you say them?”
False hypocrisy is the most nauseating.
The man remained unmoved by her words. “As long as they can truly be revived, does it really matter who caused their deaths before?”
Qiao Gaogao had initially thought him merely thick-skinned, but now her opinion shifted this man was utterly shameless!
How could he even say such things without embarrassment?
“And…” The man’s expression darkened at this point, his words tinged with barely suppressed fury. “And the meteorite you took is the key material we need to develop the serum. Please return it.”
Qiao Gaogao and the others exchanged glances. As expected, the disappearance of the meteorite had prompted them to rush over without delay.
Qiao Gaogao feigned innocence, “What are you talking about? What meteorite? I’ve never seen it.”
Song Qingxu looked up at the sky, struggling to hold back her laughter. This girl’s act of innocence had a way of infuriating people.
“Impossible! That meteorite was huge! Unless you’re blind, you couldn’t have missed it!” the man retorted immediately.
“Oh? How huge are we talking? Could we have stuffed it into our pockets?” Qiao Gaogao spread her hands, feigning even greater innocence. “If it was really that big and couldn’t fit in our pockets, how could we have taken it?”
The man’s face turned completely grim. “Stop pretending! You must have some kind of storage space!”
They had investigated the areas where Qiao Gaogao and the others had been. Wherever they went, large quantities of supplies vanished. Without a storage space, it would have been impossible for them to carry away such massive amounts of resources.
“If you say we have one, then we have one. Whatever you say goes,” Qiao Gaogao replied indifferently.
The man turned to Yinxi, attempting to guilt-trip her once more. “Xiao Yin, we can guarantee your safety. Just come back with us and return the meteorite. We will definitely succeed in developing the serum!”
“Uncle Zhou,” Yinxi suddenly called out.
The man was momentarily stunned by her addressing him as “Uncle Zhou.” He hesitated, unsure whether to respond. In the past, when he visited the Yin family, Yinxi had always called him Uncle Zhou.
Yinxi smiled faintly, then spoke with sudden seriousness, “A few years ago, you gave me a vaccine injection. I want to know was that vaccine really for pneumonia?”
Several years earlier, a pneumonia outbreak had spread rapidly. Later, Taian developed a vaccine. At the time, production was limited, and going to vaccination sites posed risks due to crowds. As a family member of a Taian researcher, Yinxi had been prioritized for an at-home vaccination, administered by Zhou Wenqi himself.
Zhou Wenqi’s expression shifted, his gaze darkening as he stared at her.
Seeing his reaction, Yinxi seemed to understand something, a bitter smile tugging at her lips.
She didn’t know what was in that vial, but she knew that after her parents learned she had been vaccinated, they had become increasingly busy.
