She’s Fiercer Than Zombies - Chapter 42
They encountered the military while passing through City B. Originally, the group had intended to enter the city to search for supplies, but unexpectedly, they were drawn by a massive explosion. When they approached, the center of the blast was already engulfed in thick smoke, and a deep crater could faintly be seen.
Only the military, she thought, could pull off something of this scale who else would have access to such a large quantity of explosives? So, they began searching the area around the explosion for any sign of the military, and it didn’t take long for them to find traces of people.
Those stationed in the outskirts were all dressed in sharp combat uniforms, standing tall and upright, exuding an unshakable aura of steadfast integrity, a presence that couldn’t be faked by anyone pretending to be military.
Therefore, the group before them was undoubtedly from the real military.
Considering the uncertain stance of the military, Qiao Gaogao and the others didn’t reveal themselves. Instead, Song Qingxu and Tang Jiu stepped forward to make contact.
Song Qingxu and Tang Jiu were gone for a long time so long that Qiao Gaogao began to worry they had been forcibly detained by the military to serve. Finally, they returned, but their expressions were grim.
“What happened?” Qiao Gaogao immediately asked as soon as they got out of the vehicle.
Song Qingxu motioned for them to go inside to talk. The group was temporarily staying in a villa area within the city. Once inside and certain the space was secure, Song Qingxu spoke with a troubled expression, “They’re from the military. Their mission is to gather zombies and eliminate them using explosives.”
Qiao Gaogao and Yinxi exchanged a glance. If that were all, their expressions shouldn’t have been so grim there must be something else.
Sure enough, Song Qingxu’s next words sank the hearts of everyone present.
“They’re also looking for two people.”
Qiao Gaogao and the others pursed their lips. Given how serious the two had looked, the answer was already obvious.
“Did they say why they’re looking for us?” Yinxi asked.
Yet, regardless of their intentions, one thing was clear: the authorities had made contact with Tai’an!
Without Tai’an providing information, there was no reason for the military to be searching for them out of the blue.
Tang Jiu looked at Yinxi, her voice low, “They want to use you as a breakthrough to develop a serum and end this disaster.”
Qiao Gaogao’s expression shifted, and she quickly gripped Yinxi’s hand, exclaiming angrily, “They can forget it!”
Didn’t that mean they wanted to turn her senior into a test subject? Especially with those despicable people from Tai’an involved!
Given how they had been ruthless enough to create the zombie virus in the first place, who knew what further atrocities they might commit during experiments?
Song Qingxu and the others nodded in agreement. They claimed to want her cooperation in research, but who could guarantee that the experiments wouldn’t harm Yinxi?
Song Qingxu then detailed their encounter with the military. The first thing the military officials did upon meeting them was arrange for them to spar with soldiers to assess their abilities.
Later, upon learning that Tang Jiu possessed healing abilities, they tried to recruit them directly into the military. However, the group temporarily declined, explaining that they needed to search for family members who had gone missing since the apocalypse.
This naturally led to the next topic. Since they were already searching for people, the military hoped they could also keep an eye out for two specific individuals and, if possible, bring them back to the safe base.
“They’ve already established a base?”
Song Qingxu nodded. “The largest safe base in the north right now was set up by the authorities. At the same time, they’ve dispatched many military units to search for survivors.”
Hearing this, Qiao Gaogao’s expression darkened. If they had already announced the existence of the safe base, it was inevitable that many people would flock to it. As the number of people seeking refuge grew, so would the number of individuals tasked with finding them.
“So, what will you do next?” Song Qingxu looked at them with concern.
Qiao Gaogao pressed her lips together. “No matter what, I won’t hand my senior over to them!”
Don’t talk to her about national righteousness those who created the virus hadn’t considered it, yet they expected her to uphold it? Let the instigators continue their research? What a load of crap!
“Should we still go to S City?” Song Qingxu asked.
The trouble now was that even if there was something in the Taian Building, they lacked the ability to develop the serum themselves.
“Yes,” Qiao Gaogao declared firmly. “If we find evidence inside that they created the virus, at least we can expose their true nature to everyone. They shouldn’t be able to parade around as saviors, basking in the spotlight!”
Yinxi nodded in agreement. At the very least, they couldn’t let them continue to act so arrogantly.
“Alright, let’s keep moving then,” Song Qingxu agreed.
From then on, the group avoided main roads, sticking to smaller paths to minimize contact with others.
By the time they reached S City three days later, the weather had begun to warm. The winter snow had melted, and tender green grass sprouted from the ground, giving the impression that things were heading in a positive direction.
While other cities had gradually started cleanup efforts, S City remained desolate. As if deliberately forgotten by everyone, the city’s decay seemed to accelerate faster than anywhere else.
The day they arrived in S City happened to be Yinxi’s birthday. After settling in and enjoying a good meal, they decided to rest and head to the Taian Building the next day.
That evening, Qiao Gaogao quietly crept up to Yinxi, covering her eyes. “Senior, guess what your birthday present is?”
Yinxi: “?”
Yinxi shook her head, indicating she couldn’t guess. After all, the two were together all the time, and she didn’t think Qiao Gaogao had any opportunity to prepare a gift alone.
“Can’t you guess, or do you think I can’t come up with anything?”Qiao Gaogao’s voice was soft and sweet, tinged with a hint of playful whining.”
“You can’t come up with anything,” Yinxi replied, holding back a laugh.
“Hmph!” Qiao Gaogao released her hands and lay down beside her, pouting. “I originally wanted to give you the jade Guanyin pendant I’ve worn since childhood, but I gave it to Zhou Yuan and the others as a token to take back to the base.”
Yinxi moved closer, embracing her gently. “Then you can make it up to me when we get back.”
In Yinxi’s embrace, Qiao Gaogao looked up at her, feeling that merely gazing wasn’t enough. She puckered her lips to kiss her, murmuring softly, “Then, shall I give myself to you?”
“Hmm?”
Yinxi’s eyes widened instantly, her body stiffening slightly.
So bold?
She quickly shook her head, her cheeks flushing as she said, “No, no, we can’t be so casual.”
Their current lodging was just a hastily chosen hotel nearby, covered in dust everywhere, with only the area where they slept barely cleaned up.
In such an environment, she couldn’t bear to treat her Gaogao that way.
Yet this apocalypse had truly tested Yinxi, someone who used to be fastidious had been forced to adapt to such conditions.
Qiao Gaogao immediately broke into a delighted smile, her almond-shaped eyes curving like crescent moons. “Senior, you’re so perceptive! You understood right away what I meant!”
Yinxi’s face flushed with an odd shade of red.
What other meaning could those words possibly have?
