She’s Fiercer Than Zombies - Chapter 20
Qiao Gaogao warily stared at the zombie before her, yet the creature seemed to sense her uniqueness and hesitated to act rashly. Its murky eyes remained fixed on Qiao Gaogao, occasionally darting a glance at Qi Miao beside her.
Meanwhile, Qi Miao stared at her own palm in astonishment. In that urgent moment of trying to save someone, she had unconsciously awakened her supernatural ability. Though still weak and barely holding the zombie back for a few seconds, for someone like her, a daydreamer obsessed with fantasies of soaring through skies and tunneling through earth possessing such a power was absolutely thrilling!
Snapping out of her daze over her newfound ability, Qi Miao looked at the zombie ahead, her eyes sparkling as if gazing upon a lifesaver. Without its sudden appearance, who knew when her power would have been triggered?
While the others cleared out the remaining zombies, they remained alert to the situation around Qiao Gaogao and her group. After all, this zombie’s behavior seemed far more cunning than any they had encountered before. Earlier, when they used drones as bait, this particular zombie hadn’t taken the lure.
Qiao Gaogao gradually channeled her energy, preparing for the zombie’s sudden assault.
However, the zombie appeared to recognize that its current opponent was not to be underestimated. In a flash, it moved with astonishing speed, attempting to bypass Qiao Gaogao and attack another team member who seemed less threatening.
The team member reacted swiftly, firing directly at the zombie.
Qiao Gaogao followed up immediately, striking from the side. A long blade sliced through the air with a sharp whistle, aimed straight for the zombie’s neck.
In moments like these, no one cared about martial honor or notions of fair one-on-one combat. With Qiao Gaogao engaging the zombie head-on, Qi Miao provided support, and any available team members fired shots to disrupt the zombie’s movements.
“Roar!”
With a furious roar from the zombie, the sound rippled outward in all directions. Every zombie that heard it grew restless, closing in on them from all sides.
“Not good, it’s calling for backup!” Qi Miao ducked to evade the zombie’s attack. Dealing with this one was challenging enough; now it was commanding other zombies to assault them. This was clearly not good news.
Even Qiao Gaogao’s doll-like face tightened with tension. She wielded her large blade with fierce determination, yet even with assistance, she found herself evenly matched with the zombie. She couldn’t help but marvel at how rapidly the zombies were evolving.
How many days had it been? And already, such a formidable zombie had appeared!
“Prepare to retreat!”
Qiao Gaogao had no intention of letting the team perish here without even securing any supplies.
But it was clear that even if they wanted to withdraw, the zombie gave them no opportunity. More and more ordinary zombies swarmed toward them, while Qiao Gaogao remained locked in combat, unable to break through and lead the team to safety.
Qiao Gaogao couldn’t help but reflect with frustration: Had her journey been too smooth until now, making her overconfident and leading them into such a perilous situation?
“Senior Sister! Go help the others!” Qiao Gaogao shouted.
“Gaogao!” Qi Miao’s brows furrowed deeply. If she left, how would Qiao Gaogao handle the zombie alone?
“It’s fine, go quickly!” Qiao Gaogao dared not let her focus waver again. Every one of her attacks was aimed at drawing the zombies further away from the others, denying them any chance to strike from the shadows.
Qi Miao took a deep breath, turned around, and with a single shot, blew a zombie’s head apart, rescuing a teammate who was on the verge of being grabbed.
After that, the group worked together seamlessly. Whenever Qi Miao used her ability to freeze the zombies, slowing their movements, someone would immediately step in to deliver a headshot. Yet, despite their efforts, their defensive perimeter continued to shrink.
“Inside, upstairs!” Qi Miao decisively commanded the others to rush into the shop. She stayed behind to pull down and secure the rolling shutter door, then, still uneasy, erected several ice walls as additional barriers before leading the team upstairs.
The sound of zombies slamming against the rolling shutter was deafening, but fortunately, as they lost sight of their targets, the zombies’ aggression gradually subsided, shifting their attention toward Qiao Gaogao instead.
Upstairs, the team had already set up their guns, ready to take down any zombie that tried to approach Qiao Gaogao with a single, lethal shot.
“Roar!”
The zombie entangled with Qiao Gaogao let out a furious roar as it lunged at her. She could even smell the stench of decay emanating from its body. With all her strength, she swung her blade at the creature, but this time, the zombie made no attempt to dodge. It met her strike head-on, allowing the blade to slice into its flesh, splattering dark, foul-smelling liquid everywhere.
“Ugh!”
Qiao Gaogao frowned, unable to evade in time as the zombie’s sharp nails pierced straight through her left shoulder.
Just a little more, just a little.
Cold sweat beaded on her forehead as her gaze turned fierce. She grabbed the zombie’s arm and twisted it violently, a chilling sound of bone dislocation echoed through the air. Seizing the moment when the zombie’s right side became sluggish, she flipped over to its back, wrapped her arms around its head, and gave it a forceful twist.
“Roar!”
The zombie roared in fury, but even in this state, it hadn’t lost its ability to move. Its still-agile left hand clawed at Qiao Gaogao, leaving deep gashes on her arm.
Ignoring her torn and bleeding arm, Qiao Gaogao didn’t flinch when an ordinary zombie lunged at her. Instead, she delivered a savage punch to its head, caving in its skull and leaving a gaping wound.
“Hiss!”
Although the ordinary zombie attacking her was quickly taken down, a chunk of flesh was torn from her back. The scent of blood spread, further enraging the surrounding zombies.
“Roar!”
The roar of the zombie she had pinned was abruptly cut short.
As her body grew colder from blood loss, Qiao Gaogao gasped for breath and pulled her hand out of the zombie’s skull. Clutched in her palm was a grayish crystal tinged with a hint of brown, now coated in brain matter.
From their elevated position, Qi Miao and the others were clearing out the zombies closing in on Qiao Gaogao, but the horde was overwhelming. Many of the zombies they had initially lured away had returned, heeding the earlier zombie’s command. Now, trapped within the encirclement, Qiao Gaogao’s only option was to find cover fast.
Qiao Gaogao lifted her head and scanned her surroundings. After locating Qi Miao and the others, she mustered her last bit of supernatural ability, conjuring iron plates out of thin air to step on. Treading over the plates, she crossed above the zombies’ heads, reached the window where Qi Miao and the others were, and climbed inside!
The zombies, having lost their target, immediately became like headless flies. After a round of furious roars, many of them began pouncing on the corpses of the zombies from which Qiao Gaogao had already extracted the crystal cores, starting their feeding frenzy.
As soon as Qiao Gaogao tumbled through the window, she collapsed unconscious, completely drained. Although her wounds had begun to stop bleeding, they still looked gruesome.
“Gaogao!” Qi Miao’s eyes reddened as he hurriedly caught her. Panic-stricken at the sight of her injuries, he quickly bandaged her wounds to stem the bleeding temporarily, his voice trembling slightly as he said, “We need to get back immediately!”
Qi Miao couldn’t bear to imagine how their master and Xiao Yin would react upon seeing Qiao Gaogao in such a state when they returned!
Moreover, Qiao Gaogao had been scratched by a zombie. After becoming a supernatural ability user, would being scratched by a zombie cause any harm?
