She’s Fiercer Than Zombies - Chapter 18
The team now had three ability users, which undoubtedly boosted everyone’s confidence. After the crowd dispersed, Qiao’s parents began earnestly studying their newfound abilities. They soon discovered, however, that they could only use their powers for short periods before feeling mentally exhausted. Compared to Qiao Gaogao’s endurance, the difference was like night and day.
“Could it be that we’re just too old and not as energetic as the younger generation?” Qiao’s father muttered under his breath.
Qiao Muyi shot him a glare. “It’s obvious that abilities vary in strength. Gaogao is simply much more powerful than we are.”
“Hehe!” Hearing her mother’s praise, Qiao Gaogao couldn’t help but beam with delight.
Yinxi sat nearby, resting her chin in her hands as she watched them, feeling genuinely happy for them. After all, Gaogao planned to take her along to find her own parents later. Once they left, the fact that Qiao’s parents had abilities would significantly increase their safety.
Meanwhile, Qi Miao was practically drooling with envy. “Why wasn’t I born as your child, Master?”
There was no way this family wasn’t special! Just look at them awakening abilities one after another, all within the same household!
Qiao Muyi looked at her with amusement and tapped her lightly on the head. “Haven’t we always treated you like our own daughter?”
Qi Miao and her brother had been training at the martial arts school since they were very young. Over the years, the Qiao family had come to regard them as their own.
Qi Miao pouted and mumbled that it wasn’t the same.
Yinxi wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but she felt that after Qiao’s parents awakened their abilities, they seemed to emit a particularly enticing scent, making her teeth itch again.
Come to think of it, she still hadn’t prepared her chew toy.
Just as she was lost in thought, she suddenly felt a tug on her arm. Snapping back to reality, she found herself being pulled toward Qiao Muyi. Gaogao was looking at her mother with hopeful eyes.
“Mom, doesn’t the wood-element ability symbolize vitality? Can you check on Senior and see if you can heal her?”
It was no surprise that Gaogao would make such a request. Yinxi’s injuries had shown no signs of healing all this time, and this had become Gaogao’s greatest worry.
Hearing her daughter’s words, Qiao Muyi’s expression turned serious. They were all aware of Yinxi’s condition not only was Gaogao concerned, but they had also been worried about her.
Holding Yinxi’s hand, Qiao Muyi channeled her wood-element ability into Yinxi’s body. However, the moment the energy entered Yinxi, it dissipated like a drop in the ocean, barely causing a ripple.
Surprised, Qiao Muyi continued to channel her ability, attempting to heal Yinxi’s wounds. But by the time her energy was completely depleted, Yinxi’s injuries remained unchanged. Instead, Qiao Muyi herself grew pale from overexertion.
Withdrawing her hand, Qiao Muyi shook her head. “It’s no use. My ability doesn’t seem to have any effect on her.”
The moment her energy entered Yinxi’s body, it vanished without a trace, leaving no room for any other outcome.
Hearing this, Gaogao’s face fell with disappointment, but she still took out a tissue and gently wiped the sweat from Qiao Muyi’s forehead. “It’s okay. We’ll find another way in the future.”
“Growl!”
Yinxi felt so comfortable that her eyes narrowed into slits. If it weren’t for Qiao Muyi’s visibly pale complexion, she would have wanted her to channel even more of her supernatural ability. When that energy flowed into her body, it felt as soothing as being surrounded by lush greenery in nature.
Qiao Gaogao turned around upon hearing her growl and blinked slightly at the sight. “Does Senior like Mom’s ability?”
Yinxi nodded, raised her hand to point at the large tree outside the hotel, then clasped her hands together and rested them beside her head, mimicking a sleeping gesture to convey how comfortable it was so much so that it made her want to sleep.
Everyone: “…”
So, Qiao Muyi’s ability had a lulling effect on her?
For a moment, everyone’s expressions turned complicated, unsure of what to say.
Soon, however, they returned to discussing serious matters. According to Qiao Muyi and the others’ plan, Qiao Gaogao would lead a team to scavenge for supplies, Qiao’s father would take another group to inspect the nearby area and clear out some zombies, while Qiao Muyi would oversee logistics with the remaining people.
The assignments were quickly put into action. Qiao Gaogao set out with Qi Miao and others to search for supplies, Qiao’s father took Qi Ji to eliminate zombies in the vicinity, and Qiao Muyi began organizing the resort’s layout with the rest. The resort had both farmland and ponds, and in Qiao Muyi’s plan, she aimed to cultivate crops and raise livestock to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency.
Before departing, Qiao Gaogao noticed Yinxi’s sullen expression and cupped her face, gently rubbing it as she coaxed softly, “Senior, be good and wait for me to come back, okay?”
With her face being held, Yinxi could only look at her gloomily. Whenever it came time for everyone to contribute, Yinxi felt a deep sense of frustration.
She couldn’t do anything.
Qiao Gaogao thought for a moment, her almond-shaped eyes nearly curving into slits. “Senior, how about you help figure out what crops would be suitable to plant?”
Yinxi was taken aback, her eyes widening slightly clearly not expecting Qiao Gaogao to say that.
“Growl?”
“Of course! It doesn’t matter if others don’t understand. You can tell me all about it when I get back, and I can learn more about the farming situation then,” Qiao Gaogao said gently.
After a moment’s thought, Yinxi nodded vigorously!
Seeing her finally regain some spirit, Qiao Gaogao smiled sincerely. Though she didn’t quite understand why she could comprehend Senior’s growls, she couldn’t deny it was a good thing, it meant Senior wouldn’t lack someone to communicate with.
The two groups soon drove out of the resort’s gate and parted ways at a fork in the road not far away. Qiao Gaogao and her team headed straight for the outskirts of the city. Before setting off, they had checked the map and learned there was a farmers’ market nearby perfect for gathering seeds and similar items.
Thanks to the presence of supernatural ability users in the team, their progress went relatively smoothly. However, no one let their guard down, and they made sure to memorize the route along the way.
After all, they could still use online maps for now, but once the network went down, relying on their own memory would be the only way to avoid being utterly lost.
In these times, it was especially unforgiving for those with a poor sense of direction.
“Gaogao, look at the crowd inside,” Qi Miao whispered, eyeing the large signboard of the farmers’ market in the distance. Since it was a marketplace, it was usually bustling with people, and after the zombie outbreak, there must have been plenty of infected individuals inside.
Qiao Gaogao thought for a moment, then broke into a grin.
“Senior sister, I remember there’s a drone specialty store nearby, right? Let’s go grab a few drones!”
Qi Miao widened her eyes, looking at her junior sister with admiration and giving her a thumbs-up.
She thought Qiao Gaogao’s personality was simply perfect for this apocalyptic world like a fish in water!
