Rich Cat A Would Never Fall in Love with a Fake Heiress - Chapter 43
The days of being kept felt utterly mundane and unremarkable.
Mo Li slept straight until half past ten in the morning. The sun was already high in the sky, and the spot beside her in bed was empty, leaving only a slight indentation.
She lifted the blanket, and a small head suddenly popped out from under the covers.
Tang Yuan stared at her with innocent, bewildered eyes, kneading her body back and forth and nuzzling his head against her, begging for pets.
The two of them, human and cat, lazed around in bed for a long time. It was almost noon when Mo Li decided to prepare lunch for Mo Wang and deliver it to her office.
Mo Wang was currently in the midst of a work transition, and it was inevitable that many in the Mo Corporation were resistant to her leadership.
She must be swamped with work, Mo Li thought.
But when Mo Li opened the refrigerator, she found that the groceries from her last shopping trip had run out. She grabbed a shopping bag and prepared to head to the fresh market to restock.
However, when she pressed the door handle, the door didn’t budge.
The lock had been changed.
At first, Mo Li thought Mo Wang had installed some high-tech lock. She examined the buttons one by one, trying to decipher the foreign-language labels.
As time was running out, she dialed Mo Wang’s number.
The call was answered instantly.
Mo Wang’s voice came through, light and natural, as if she had regained her usual composure.
It was quiet on her end, without the hustle and bustle Mo Li had imagined.
“What’s up?”
Mo Li tried turning the handle again, but the door still wouldn’t open.
She muttered in complaint, “What kind of new lock did you install? I can’t open it at all.”
Mo Wang paused for a moment before speaking again, her tone coaxing. “Why do you need to go out? If you need anything, I’ll have someone bring it to you.”
“I wanted to bring you lunch.”
Mo Wang’s voice carried a hint of laughter. “I’ve already eaten. I even asked Zuo An to bring food over for you. Make sure you eat.”
Mo Li let out an “Oh.”
“But I want to go out and buy groceries. We can’t always rely on others to deliver everything.”
Mo Wang, however, disagreed. “Why not? If you want to buy groceries, we can go out together tonight.”
“Fine.”
Mo Li hung up the phone, only then realizing that Mo Wang had effectively placed her under house arrest.
She crouched down and reached out to stroke Tang Yuan, who was circling around her feet.
“Little one, what do you do all day cooped up at home?”
Tang Yuan’s round eyes sparkled as he tilted his head to look at Mo Li. Seeming to understand yet not quite, he leaped up and retrieved a dusty cat teaser from behind the sofa, a toy he seemed to have treasured for a long time.
“Thanks.”
Mo Li casually took the cat teaser and waved it a few times.
Tang Yuan’s attention was captured, and he pounced playfully.
But he was, after all, just a naive and carefree kitten. Soon, he lost interest in Mo Li and the elusive feather on the teaser, darting to the window to “send telegrams” at the birds flitting by outside.
Mo Li turned on the TV and randomly selected a drama channel.
The female lead asked with hopeful eyes, “Will you ever abuse me in the future?”
The male lead declared righteously, “No, but I can learn.”
What kind of nonsense is this?
Mo Li changed the channel.
A cooking show came on.
“You add sugar to this dish, and guess what happens?”
“What happens?”
“Just one little spoonful, and bam, the dish turns sweet.”
Mo Li’s patience ran out. She switched to a pet channel and watched half-heartedly as the host interviewed a woman leading a garishly dyed, fashionable, skinny Toy Poodle.
“…Is the dye non-toxic?”
“It’s all natural, won’t harm your pet…”
Tang Yuan held the frozen yogurt treat in its mouth, pawing at Mo Li’s feet, wanting her to help open it.
Mo Li shifted her gaze, her eyes lighting up slightly.
…
Mo Corporation.
After hanging up the phone with Mo Li, the gentle warmth on Mo Wang’s face vanished like dry grass scorched by wildfire, leaving no trace.
Contrary to Mo Li’s imagination, no one dared to show the slightest dissatisfaction. Instead, the employees in the meeting room were as silent as cicadas in winter, not even daring to lift their eyes.
Mo Wang leisurely pulled out a paper application form. “I understand that without profit, there’s no motivation. Without a little embezzlement, some people become lazy and lack drive.”
Her tone shifted abruptly as she slapped the paper onto the table. The loud noise made everyone flinch.
“Therefore, every project at Mo Corporation has been allocated enough leeway and accounts for you to line your pockets.”
Mo Wang swept a commanding gaze around the room. No one looked up.
“So, I hope such practices, like fabricating nonexistent difficulties to apply for funds from headquarters will not happen again.”
Everyone nodded like chickens pecking at rice.
Mo Wang seemed satisfied and finally softened her expression. “Then I won’t name names. Either withdraw similar funding applications yourselves, or I’ll personally reject them. You decide.”
The meeting ended. To Mo Wang, this minor issue was as simple as plucking a blade of grass. She returned to her office.
After Mo Li moved out her few personal belongings, this small office lost its last trace of vitality. Even Secretary Su no longer came by.
Mo Wang didn’t mind. Over the years, through careful investigation and observation, she had gained a thorough understanding of Mo Corporation’s major projects and didn’t need a secretary to liaise for her.
In contrast, Mo Huli had, early in the morning, submitted a detailed report of Mo Corporation’s finances and cash flow, even his personal funds were clearly documented.
If Mo Li knew he could be this compliant and worry-free, she’d probably be furious.
Mo Wang couldn’t help but smile faintly.
She opened her phone.
In the live surveillance footage, Zuo An opened the door, and Mo Li took a bag of lunch before closing it.
She then sat quietly at the table, unwrapping the packaging, while Tang Yuan wagged its tail, watching eagerly.
“No, you just finished your canned food and frozen yogurt.”
In the video, Mo Li set down her meal, scolding Tang Yuan while tapping its head.
“You little cat don’t earn a single penny at home. How can you have the nerve to eat so much?”
She sighed with feigned seriousness. “Your mother is working hard to support both of us now. How can you be so wasteful and ungrateful?”
Mo Wang couldn’t hold back a laugh.
But the office door suddenly swung open. It was Mo’s father.
His expression was complicated, and he was about to say something when Mo Wang cut him off impatiently.
“Knock first.”
She turned off her phone, not even sparing him a glance.
Mo’s father took a deep breath, nodded as if he wanted to speak, but closed the door instead.
A short while later, a knock sounded.
Mo Wang ignored it. When the knock came for the third time, she responded lazily.
“Come in.”
Mo’s father’s humiliated face reappeared at the door.
He seemed to have mentally prepared himself as he walked over to Mo Wang. First, he spoke a few soft words.
“I received their application to withdraw the funding. I didn’t expect you to still be as capable as ever in managing your subordinates.”
Mo Wang sneered coldly and raised her eyes to look at him.
“Unfortunately, you failed in teaching your daughter, raising an ungrateful wretch like me.”
She finally put down her phone and turned her swivel chair to face him. “No one visits the temple without a reason. Speak, what brings you here?”
Mo Wang’s father had barely said a few words before being thoroughly shut down.
“Listen to you, child. We were family for over a decade, after all. Some words shouldn’t be spoken too harshly, and some actions shouldn’t be taken too far.”
After lecturing her for a bit, he finally remembered the purpose of his visit. He tugged awkwardly at the hem of his clothes, struggling to find the words.
“Look, you’ve already secured the position of acting CEO, and the board has approved most of your project proposals. So…”
Mo Wang didn’t respond, her gaze drifting toward the window again.
Her father cursed inwardly but had no choice but to lay his cards on the table.
“So, shouldn’t we let bygones be bygones? The evidence and materials you have in your possession…”
Mo Wang had long anticipated that her father would come begging over this matter.
On the day of the shareholders’ meeting, she had presented photos of Mo Li assaulting an employee. To minimize the fallout, her father had reluctantly agreed based on the voting results.
However, during the emergency board meeting that followed, her father, in collusion with the board, still appointed Mo Li as the new interim CEO.
Originally, Mo Wang had no right to attend the board meeting.
But they wanted to silence her once and for all, so they invited her to observe, even though she had no decision-making power.
Mo Wang was well-prepared. Photos and recordings of her father’s secret affairs with other women were slapped onto the table, one set for each person present.
Her father, humiliated and furious, snapped, “Are you threatening me? Blackmailing me?”
“I wouldn’t dare.”
Mo Wang lowered her head, distributing the photos one by one. “I just want everyone to know that, as someone hollowed out by indulgence in wine and lust, your decisions are unreliable.”
She handed a set to her father as well, emphasizing that everyone was equal and everyone would get their share.
Her father raised his hand, impatiently intending to tear them up.
But Mo Wang swiftly pulled them back, her fingers deftly separating the stack.
There were two photos.
Beneath the photo of him entangled with another Omega was another picture, its crimson corner peeking out. His expression turned grim.
Under the weight of everyone’s curious stares, he took the photo, his face growing increasingly ashen.
Then, without a word, he turned the photo face down, pressed it firmly against the table, and discreetly tucked it into his pants pocket.
Lin Qianying burst into loud laughter. As a board member and the second-largest shareholder of the company, she not only had decision-making power but could practically do as she pleased.
“Uncle Mo, what other scandals do you have? Share them and let us have a good laugh.”
No one else joined in her laughter.
Her father’s eyes darted around nervously. In his mind, everyone around him at that moment could be in the know.
He mustered his courage and declared, “Even if you release this, how many people would believe it? The Mo family isn’t without media influence. I’ll make sure you can’t even make a ripple.”
“What bold words,” Mo Wang narrowed her eyes, her tone dripping with menace. “In terms of public opinion, I truly can’t compete with you. But what if the Luo family intervenes? The Luo family’s eldest son has been missing for days, and the head of the Luo family is on his last legs. It seems the entire Luo family is about to change hands.”
“And at such a critical moment, as the only shareholder who hasn’t withdrawn investment from the Luo Corporation, how do I compare to you? the Mo family who pulled all project funding cleanly before the storm even began?”
Mr. Mo’s expression grew increasingly rigid, all his desperate struggles proving futile.
Mo Wang deliberately asked a question to which he already knew the answer.
“Who do you think Second Young Master Luo would help?”
“However.”
Mo Wang appeared to offer a well-intentioned reminder.
“Are you certain this is merely a matter of public opinion warfare?”
They all knew the content of that second photograph.
It was a piece of photographic evidence filled with implications.
Mo Li stood amidst a pool of blood, her expression solemn, like a handsome evil deity from hell judging the mortal world.
Her hair was disheveled, with minor wounds visible on her body and temple.
And behind her lay the lifeless body of Luo Licheng, his eyes vacant and limbs twisted.
