Rich Cat A Would Never Fall in Love with a Fake Heiress - Chapter 34
The reporter followed by tilting the camera upward, accompanied by teasing noises. Mo Li hurriedly closed the window, shutting it tightly along with the blinds.
She couldn’t understand it, did Lin Qianying think she was some kind of male peacock in a zoo, flaunting its feathers in a frenzy with such a high-profile declaration of love?
Turning around, she met Secretary Su’s gossip-filled gaze.
“By the way, I haven’t said it yet, congratulations on your engagement, boss.” Though her words were congratulatory, the curiosity in her eyes was barely contained.
“And Miss Mo Wang… how is she doing?”
Sure enough, she’d asked a completely unrelated question.
Mo Li felt her head spinning. “Are you trying to ask what’s going on between me and Mo Wang?”
“There’s nothing wrong between us. My relationship with Lin Qianying is purely professional.”
Secretary Su didn’t seem entirely convinced. “Last time Miss Mo Wang was here, I just helped you get the therapy device, and she looked at me like she wanted to eat me alive. Does she really approve of your contractual engagement?”
Mo Li turned to scrutinize her. “Mo Wang wouldn’t get jealous over you, would she?”
Secretary Su choked back a reply. “I do have my merits, you know.”
“But your priority right now is to go down and greet Miss Lin. Leaving her waiting too long would not only offend the Lin family but also make us seem insincere.”
Mo Li sighed. Truly, work was as unpleasant as eating shit.
“I know.”
Without this job, her life would be far from peaceful.
Mo Li took the elevator back down slowly, unsure of what expression to wear. Lin Qianying’s acting was way over the top, this didn’t look like a newly engaged couple at all, but more like newlyweds dropping by for a visit.
As soon as she reached the company entrance, the reporters Lin Qianying had hired swarmed in for another round of frantic photography.
Mo Li forced a smile and tried to pull Lin Qianying inside, but instead, Lin Qianying linked arms with her and pressed a thermal lunchbox into her hands.
With a shy smile, Lin Qianying looked like a girl experiencing her first crush.
“I specially made you pork rib and corn soup, along with a prepared lunch.”
Mo Li held the lunchbox handle, feeling as though it were scalding her hands. She managed a strained smile. “Shall we go inside to talk?”
“Not yet.” Lin Qianying giggled sweetly, refusing to let go. “Darling, I noticed you don’t have a decent car. This one is a gift I bought just for you. What do you think?”
Mo Li took a deep breath, struggling to maintain her smile. She nodded. “It’s wonderful. Shall we go upstairs to discuss the car?”
Lin Qianying actually blushed. “Oh, you’re so impatient.”
Mo Li was at a loss for words. Fortunately, Lin Qianying finally stopped standing there like a dead weight and followed her upstairs.
Even on the way to the office, she clung to Mo Li’s sleeve, her face full of delight and bashfulness, unwilling to let go.
But the moment they stepped into the office, Lin Qianying withdrew her hand, and both of them simultaneously dropped their fake smiles.
Mo Li slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
“Who told you to show up at the company unannounced? Who do you think you are? some female CEO from a city romance drama, kneeling down to propose?”
Lin Qianying remained unruffled. “Why can’t I be? We both look good. This video will generate a lot of buzz and positive feedback online once it’s posted. Who knows? Maybe the Mo Corporation can even use it for some publicity.”
She casually found a chair and sat down comfortably.
Mo Li frowned, “But I haven’t agreed to the engagement yet. If we end up separating later, how are we supposed to handle the fallout?”
Lin Qianying chuckled, “Well, I’m not the one planning to break off the engagement, so that’s not my problem to worry about.”
“I don’t intend to keep up this charade with you forever, but my idea is this: we get engaged for three to five years, hold a superficial wedding, and once this alliance has completely lost its usefulness, we squeeze out one last burst of publicity by getting a divorce.”
She looked smug. “The virtual world is so vast, by then, who would even remember our sweet, fabricated engagement?”
Mo Li frowned again. “I won’t cooperate with your failed first half of life.”
“Suit yourself,” Lin Qianying replied indifferently. “But Mo Wang has thoroughly angered me by using this gland against me. If you don’t want her blood staining the Mo Corporation building, you’d better play along nicely.”
“If you lay a finger on her, I won’t make things easy for you either,” Mo Li bristled, her defenses fully raised.
Lin Qianying paid no mind. She unlocked her phone and checked the time.
“Time’s almost up. The reporters are waiting to snap pictures of me leaving.”
With that, she pulled out a small mirror, touched up her makeup, and picked up the lunchbox Mo Li had casually tossed on the floor.
She fumbled, and the lid fell off, revealing a rock inside.
Mo Li raised an eyebrow. No wonder the lunchbox had felt so heavy earlier, as if it were actually filled with food.
Lin Qianying didn’t seem embarrassed. She took out the rock and threw it into the trash. “Looks like you were quite satisfied with the soup I made, you drank every last drop.”
“Indeed, not a drop left,” Mo Li said coldly.
Lin Qianying, however, seemed pleased with her cooperation. “Remember to reply when I tag you on social media today.”
Without another glance, she pushed the door open and left, smiling at every employee she passed along the way.
…
Mo Li was busy with work all day and couldn’t get away, but she still called Zhu Wen and the others first, asking them to assign someone to keep an eye on Mo Wang, just in case Lin Qianying got any inappropriate ideas.
For once, she left the piled-up work for tomorrow and, as soon as the workday ended, grabbed her bag and got into the car.
The car she was using now was shared with Mo Wang.
As for the luxury car Lin Qianying had sent over, Mo Li had it towed away and parked in the company’s underground garage, waiting for a chance to dispose of it later.
Before Mo Li even made it home, her phone suddenly lit up. She glanced at it, it was a message from Mo Wang.
She immediately opened her phone, only to find a news link glaring in the chat history.
The headline read: “Li-Qian CP’s Sweetness Overload, The Cold Exterior of the Lin Heiress Hides a Tender Heart.”
Mo Li’s scalp prickled as she scrolled down. Their interactions from that morning had been edited into GIFs, complete with sweet effects and close-ups of their expressions by marketing accounts, making it all look harmonious and joyful.
The comments section was flooded with screams over the sugary content.
I Am a Dragon: Who are these people? They’re so good-looking, I thought they were celebrities from some media company!
Chongchong Loves Green Onions: They look so perfect together! May they last a hundred years!
Sweetie: Aaaah, so sweet, 100% real! Rich heiresses wouldn’t lie to us commoners, this sugar is definitely genuine!
…
Unable to bear looking any longer, Mo Li closed her phone and quickly wanted to send a message back to explain.
She simply made a call instead.
The call was answered almost immediately. Mo Wang’s voice on the other end sounded as calm as ever, like the quiet before a storm: “When are you coming back? Could you pick up some ribs from the supermarket? I’d like to make soup.”
“Okay, okay,” Mo Li hurriedly agreed, unsure of how to continue explaining.
When she arrived home carrying a bag of ribs, she found the apartment pitch dark and eerily silent, as if no one had been living there at all.
A sense of panic crept over Mo Li. Worried that Mo Wang might have been taken away by Lin Qianying, she reached for her phone to call Zhu Wen.
But as she turned to search for her phone, she suddenly found herself staring into a pair of glowing green eyes.
A long, drawn-out meow echoed through the darkness, sending a chill down her spine.
Then, footsteps approached, and the room was suddenly bathed in a warm, yellow glow. Soft, dim little lights dotted the corners of the living room walls.
Mo Wang stood beside her, and just as Mo Li’s gaze fell upon her, she pulled the string on a party popper.
Pop!
Tiny shreds of colorful paper scattered everywhere.
Under the gentle shower of confetti and the cooing sounds of Tang Yuan, Mo Wang’s eyes seemed to shimmer with flecks of golden light.
She smiled warmly and said,
“Happy birthday!”
