Rich Cat A Would Never Fall in Love with a Fake Heiress - Chapter 35
The season was on the verge of autumn, and Mo Wang wore a long, plush knitted sweater. Its soft texture draped gently, enveloping her slender frame.
On her head sat a colorful party hat for celebrating a birthday, her light chestnut hair slightly curled and cascading beside her ears, making her look like a flawless doll.
Mo Li suddenly remembered that she was indeed born in this transitional season, neither hot nor cold.
For her, birthdays were never occasions for celebration, they were merely meaningless numbers on official documents, marking the beginning of her life of suffering.
Yet, every year around this time, an anonymous gift would arrive at her doorstep. Sometimes it was a scarf, other times expensive jewelry, but the sender never left a name.
She had always assumed it was an occasional act of conscience from Mother Mo.
But Mother Mo was not one to keep secrets. If she had been the one sending the gifts, she would have long since come to claim credit from Mo Li. Over the years, Mo Li had grown increasingly curious about the origin of these presents.
This year was the first time she hadn’t received an anonymous gift early in the morning, but it was also the first time she received a birthday gift with a sender’s name.
Her handbag slipped to the floor as Mo Li stepped forward, wrapping her arms tightly around Mo Wang’s shoulders and neck in a protective, crosswise embrace.
She breathed in Mo Wang’s delicate scent, a blend of pheromones and chestnut-scented shampoo, warm and comforting.
A genuine smile spread across Mo Li’s face as she rested her head on Mo Wang’s shoulder, closing her eyes in contentment.
“All these years, it was you sending the gifts. You never really disliked me, did you?”
Mo Wang thought for a moment. “Actually, I did dislike you a little when you first arrived.”
Mo Li tilted her head, their faces now inches apart.
“So, what changed your mind?”
Mo Wang gently pulled her arms away and sighed helplessly. “Because I realized you can’t be judged by ordinary standards, your way of thinking is just uniquely peculiar.”
She switched on the lights in the living room, restoring brightness to the space.
The sound of meowing persisted, as if trying to capture their attention.
Following the noise, Mo Li turned and discovered Tang Yuan trapped inside a cloth bag, with only his head and limbs poking out, hung on the wall like a silkworm cocoon, wide-eyed and unable to move.
“Before you came back, he kept trying to paw at the string lights. I had no choice but to hang him up there for a while.”
Suppressing a laugh, Mo Li freed Tang Yuan.
But Tang Yuan didn’t seem to appreciate her help. As soon as she let go, he circled around Mo Wang’s feet while she retrieved a small box from the living room coffee table.
In front of Mo Li, she opened the box to reveal a sparkling sapphire earring.
“A birthday gift.”
Under the bright living room lights, it shimmered brilliantly. But when Mo Wang’s fingers covered it, blocking the light, the earring turned dull and lost its luster, becoming a plain, dark black.
“This is to prevent anyone from getting greedy. When you wear your hair up at parties, it will shine brightly. But when your hair covers it, blocking the light, it will look like an ordinary, inexpensive earring.”
Mo Wang carefully helped Mo Li put on the earring, lifting her hair to admire it for a moment.
“It suits you. It’s beautiful.”
Mo Li walked to the mirror, studied her reflection for a while, and smiled. “It’s beautiful.”
She suddenly remembered something, “But why is there only one?”
Mo Wang brushed aside the hair at her temple, revealing a matching sapphire earring that glimmered faintly. “Because the other one is with me.”
“This earring contains a chip, it can track your location and also enable communication. The plastic bump on the back isn’t just for grip; if you press it, you can talk to me. It uses bone conduction, so no one else can hear.”
“I’m sorry, Mo Li. Last time, I put you in such danger. It won’t happen again.” She lowered her hand, her expression so sincere that Mo Li thought even the most heinous criminal would be swayed by her words.
“As long as you call me, I’ll be able to sense it anytime.” Mo Wang gently pressed Mo Li’s earring, and sure enough, Mo Li felt a slight vibration. Two voices spoke simultaneously, both clearly Mo Wang’s.
“This was custom-made for you. Something like that won’t happen again.”
Mo Li nodded, averting her gaze sheepishly. “Actually, you were right. If I hadn’t listened to you, I would have made my first major mistake at Mo Corporation.”
Mo Wang smiled contentedly and pressed Mo Li’s earring once more. After a gentle vibration, the call ended.
The dining table was laden with steaming dishes and an exquisitely crafted birthday cake shaped like a little white cat.
“The bakery asked me what design I wanted. I wasn’t sure, so I sent them a picture of Tang Yuan and asked them to replicate it.”
Mo Li chuckled softly, feeling as though she had smiled more today than in the entire past year. “It’s adorable.”
“But if there’s already so much food, why did you ask me to buy ribs?”
“Of course, so that President Mo could see how President Lin went all out to win your heart.” Mo Wang picked up her chopsticks and helped herself to a piece of chicken wing.
“Lin Qianying, the esteemed daughter of a wealthy family who never lifted a finger in the kitchen, has now personally cooked for you. And President Mo, in turn, showed great appreciation by finishing every last drop of the rib soup. What a touching story.”
Mo Li silently regretted bringing it up. Whenever the topic of Lin Qianying came up, Mo Wang always seemed particularly resentful.
“However,” Mo Wang’s tone shifted, “she’s not worth my attention. At that time, I hadn’t finished setting up the room yet, so I wanted you to come back later to buy me some time.”
Mo Li also picked up a piece of white-cut chicken and savored the familiar taste of the restaurant. As expected, Mo Wang still knew nothing about cooking beyond salads.
But that was fine. She watched as Mo Wang lit the candles one by one.
The flames danced before her eyes, and the scent of melting wax reminded her of freshly printed books.
Twenty-five candles for twenty-five years. Mo Li thought to herself, I’ve finally found someone I can feel at ease with. Wherever she is, that’s my new home.
Mo Li blew out all the candles in one breath.
Mo Wang reached out as if to shield them, but they had already gone out.
“You didn’t make a wish!”
As Mo Wang relit the candles one by one, Mo Li thought to herself, her heart warm:
My wish has already come true.
…
Mo Wang insisted she make another wish, and Mo Li obediently complied.
Still, two people could only eat so much. After finishing the meal, half the cake remained, so they stored it in the fridge to enjoy the next day.
The two of them, having eaten so contentedly for once, decided to take a stroll downstairs.
Tang Yuan had also managed to snag some meat rinsed in water and eaten some canned food. Seeing the two preparing to go out, he immediately clung to their legs, trying to dart outside.
Fortunately, Mo Wang dragged him back, gave him a few light smacks on the rear, and fastened his cat leash.
Thus, the two of them and the cat made their way downstairs. For some reason, Mo Li felt as though everyone passing by was smiling at her.
“Are they laughing at me?”
Mo Wang kept her gaze straight ahead. “No.”
Tang Yuan meowed in agreement.
As they walked, they passed by a supermarket, and Mo Wang suddenly remembered that with two people living together now, they ought to buy another pot and add more tableware.
Luckily, the supermarket allowed Tang Yuan inside, so Mo Wang carried him into the household goods section.
Mo Li followed behind but suddenly stopped in front of a shelf displaying full-length mirrors.
There were several noticeable smudges of cream on both her cheeks and the tip of her nose.
It must have been Mo Wang who secretly scooped some off while putting the cake in the fridge. Mo Li finally understood why Mo Wang had so thoughtfully wiped her face before they left.
She had clearly taken the opportunity to cause mischief.
Mo Li quickened her pace to catch up. Mo Wang had already picked out some bowls and was now circling the selection of frying pans. Seeing Mo Li approach with a clean face, she showed no sign of guilt.
“Help me decide which one is suitable.”
At the same time, another voice chimed in.
“Could you help me decide which one I should buy?”
The voice sounded somewhat familiar. Mo Li and Mo Wang turned their heads and saw Lin Qianying and Bai Wu, who had also turned in their direction.
They were pushing a cart filled to the brim with food and other daily necessities, clearly having lived together for quite some time.
Bai Wu greeted them first, her smile playful. “I didn’t expect to run into you here. I rarely cook, but today I accidentally burned the coating off my pan, so I had to come buy a new one.”
Lin Qianying, wearing a mask that covered her face completely, walked over and handed Mo Li a mask as well.
“We’re quite the famous couple now. Better not let anyone snap photos of you going in and out with another woman.”
Mo Li glanced at Mo Wang.
Mo Wang nodded. “Take it.”
Only then did Mo Li accept it.
Immediately after, both she and Bai Wu fell silent, as if by mutual agreement, neither saying a word.
Just as Mo Li thought the awkward silence would persist, Mo Wang suddenly spoke up. “Would you like to come over to our place for a bit?”
Bai Wu seized the opportunity and nodded, following Mo Wang without hesitation.
Lin Qianying, noticeably more tense and reserved in front of Mo Wang, merely nodded at Mo Li before pushing the heavy cart and trailing behind.
…
The four of them arrived at Mo Wang’s apartment. Mo Li busied herself fetching drinks from the fridge, while Bai Wu curiously looked around.
Lin Qianying finally deigned to remove her “prestigious” mask, her first words dripping with sarcasm.
“Last time I checked, you weren’t living here. Truly, a cunning rabbit has three burrows.”
Mo Wang brought over the leftover cake from the fridge and smiled at her. “Don’t just talk. Aren’t you going to wish your fiancée a happy birthday?”
As soon as the word “fiancée” was uttered, the room fell into an eerie silence once again.
Bai Wu had always loved gossip, but perhaps feeling like she had stumbled into drama involving herself, she gave Mo Li an awkward smile: “Happy birthday.”
Then, she retreated to the corner with Tang Yuan, the only one oblivious to the tense atmosphere.
When Mo Li returned from washing fruit in the kitchen, only Bai Wu remained in the living room, eating cake, while Tang Yuan sat on the sofa with his back turned to her. Clearly, the human and the cat weren’t getting along.
Seeing Mo Li, Bai Wu wiped the cream from the corner of her mouth.
“Happy birthday. The cake’s pretty good, by the way.”
She casually reached out to pet Tang Yuan, but he leaped aside and hissed at her.
Bai Wu withdrew her hand sheepishly. “The two of them went into the bedroom, not sure what they’re discussing.”
She patted the sofa beside her, warmly inviting Mo Li to sit, her demeanor so relaxed it was as if she were in her own home.
Mo Li hesitated for a moment before sitting down and asking, “Lin Qianying’s engagement, does it bother you?”
Bai Wu shook her head. “No, actually, I’m relieved it’s with you.”
She sighed, her smile tinged with bitterness. “As an Omega, growing up with a strong-willed mother and a timid older brother, an arranged marriage was inevitable. And she’s eager to prove her worth this way.”
“Before this, Qianying had already encountered too many unsuitable matches.” A flicker of pleading crossed Bai Wu’s eyes.
“So, if she has to settle into a contractual marriage, I’d rather it be with you.”
Mo Li fell silent for a moment. “But you know, we can’t actually get engaged. Mo Wang and I-”
“I know,” Bai Wu interjected. “I just hope for as much stability as possible, even if it’s temporary. What we have will always have to stay in the shadows. I’m not asking for anything more.”
Mo Li looked puzzled. “Then how long are you planning to wait?”
Bai Wu blinked, a touch of naivety in her tone. “Probably until she can stand on her own. Then I’ll be free.”
…
That day, Mo Wang and Lin Qianying also talked for a long time, though no one knew what they discussed.
After that, Lin Qianying stopped visiting the company to see Mo Li, and her online activity quieted down significantly.
Her gland also stopped causing any further issues.
Both Mo Li and Mo Wang had demanding jobs, especially Mo Wang, who was in a career upswing and managed more than just Qiang Wei Pharmaceuticals.
No matter how busy they were, however, the two made it a point to come home for dinner every day and sleep at home.
They even hired a part-time housekeeper to cook and take care of Tang Yuan.
Mo Li was deeply content with this life, coming home to warm meals, warming the bed or being warmed by someone, and having an affectionate little cat for company when no one else was around.
This must be what they meant by “a cozy home with a wife and child.”
Even her work life felt more peaceful, though it might also have been because she was riding a wave of good fortune lately, and few in the company dared to cross her.
Nevertheless, the downfall of the Luo family was now inevitable.
Secretary Su entered the office carrying a laptop and a cup of hot coffee. With the recent surge in company business, she had been putting in plenty of overtime herself.
She placed the computer on the desk and played a video.
It was the police’s response regarding Luo Licheng’s alleged involvement in an old murder case. Luo Licheng had now been identified as a suspect, and the details of the case were under investigation.
Secretary Su took a sip of coffee and sighed, “I heard that shortly after this news was broadcast by the central media, Old Mr. Luo suffered a heart attack at the company’s entrance.”
