Rich Cat A Would Never Fall in Love with a Fake Heiress - Chapter 29
Mo Li was distracted and unsettled. As she reached the ground floor, a group of reporters lying in ambush surged forward like cannonballs, thrusting microphones and cameras at her, firing questions one after another.
“Ms. Mo, what are your thoughts on the recent falling incident? In what capacity are you involved?”
“Rumors suggest this incident is connected to internal affairs at Mo Corporation. Can you confirm if that’s true?”
“Do you have a different perspective on the casualties?”
Trapped and unable to break free, Mo Li felt waves of irritation wash over her. Years of upbringing in the Mo family urged her to maintain composure, but at that moment, she wanted to cast all those teachings aside.
After all, nothing she said would matter, these reporters would inevitably twist the facts to fit their narrative.
Just as Mo Li was about to bluntly shoo them away, a sudden splashing sound echoed, and a stream of water poured diagonally from above, landing squarely amidst the crowd of journalists.
The reporters gasped in shock, scrambling to protect their equipment.
Many tabloid devices weren’t built to withstand much, and a single drenching rendered them useless. Furious, they looked up, searching for the culprit.
Mo Li also glanced upward.
Mo Wang stood on the second-floor balcony, a watering can with its lid removed at her feet. Fresh from their earlier argument, her expression was grim as she leaned against the railing, her phone camera aimed at the reporters below. Coldly, she declared, “If I see any reports about this, I will verify each one and sue you for violation of portrait rights and privacy.”
Realizing they wouldn’t get any usable material, most of the reporters grumbled discontentedly as they packed up and dispersed.
A few tabloid journalists tried to sneak a few last shots, but when Mo Wang called them out by name, they too retreated fearfully.
Seizing the moment as the crowd thinned, Mo Li strode toward the entrance without looking back, ignoring the burning gaze she felt on her back.
…
Returning to the company rashly wasn’t a wise move, and there might be reporters waiting at home as well. Mo Li booked a hotel room and opened her chat with Secretary Su.
Dozens of unread messages overwhelmed her. Skimming through them quickly, she discovered that her father had returned to the company to take charge.
Secretary Su, completely in the dark, seemed to think Mo Li had made a grave mistake and was about to be dismissed.
Mo Li contacted her to explain most of the situation, still ignoring the other missed calls and unread messages. Lying on the hotel bed, she found it impossible to calm her mind.
True to her word, Mo Wang had taken action. When Mo Li searched for information about the falling incident again, she found it had been completely blocked, with only a few scattered posts asking what had happened.
Her phone also stopped buzzing incessantly with notifications, and Mo Li breathed a sigh of relief.
But then her phone vibrated again, her mother’s video call suddenly filled the screen. Mo Li hesitated for a long time, but the other end showed no sign of giving up, calling repeatedly, one after another.
Finally, Mo Li answered. Her mother, seeing the hotel room behind her, seemed to relax slightly.
Mo Li cautiously studied her expression. Her mother was wearing the mermaid dress she usually reserved for formal occasions. There was no anger on her face; instead, a light sweat glistened on her forehead, and her eyes kept darting backward, betraying nervousness and a hint of guilt.
Mother Mo steadied her breathing. “Xiao Li, come home first. We’ve learned about the situation. It’s chaotic outside, and our home address is relatively secluded. We can discuss things slowly.”
Mo Li was puzzled. “We?”
Mother Mo shifted slightly, making space behind her. Father Mo turned his face toward her, then strode over and snatched the phone.
Even though he indulged in pleasures outside, at home, he maintained a stern expression, exuding an air of authority without needing to raise his voice like a male lion that only bullies the lionesses and cubs in the pride.
“Come home. I have something to discuss with you,” he commanded curtly.
Mo Li frowned. “What if I refuse?”
Father Mo delivered his words mercilessly. “Then you can hide in that hotel for the rest of your life.”
The screen suddenly went black. Mo Li saw her own hesitant reflection. She buried her head in her hands, and when she looked up again, her usual unsmiling expression had returned.
Mo Li grabbed her trench coat and took the elevator downstairs.
A driver from the Mo family was already waiting. The dark gray Audi was sleek and understated. The driver opened the car door for her, and Mo Li slid into the back seat. Leaning her head back, she stared at the gray ceiling and let out a long sigh.
The hillside villa was brightly lit tonight. Even the unused guest rooms had their lights on, making it look like a medieval princess’s castle from the outside.
As soon as Mo Li stepped inside, her eyes were dazzled by the spotless decorations and gleaming floors. The hall had clearly been meticulously decorated, and Mother Mo was dressed in her finest attire.
Seeing Mo Li enter, she hurried over, chiding her.
“You silly child, why are you dressed like this?”
Mo Li had expected a torrent of scolding, but to her surprise, Father Mo merely glanced at her before walking away to fiddle with his watch.
Mother Mo, uncharacteristically generous, pulled Mo Li into the bedroom, picked out a few outfits from her walk-in closet, and urged her to change before hurrying back downstairs.
Mo Li was utterly confused, but Mother Mo offered no explanation. After tossing the clothes to Mo Li, she rushed downstairs.
Even from upstairs, Mo Li could hear her giving instructions to the maids along the way.
It seemed as if they were preparing to receive some distinguished guest. Mo Li almost laughed at the absurdity. At a time like this, who would dare to show up under such circumstances?
She looked at the delicate white dress her mother had picked out and sighed.
As an Alpha, she was not only a head taller than her mother but also broader in the shoulders and hips. There was no way she could fit into that size.
Thinking back, the only ones who could always pick clothes that suited her were her personal designer and Mo Wang.
Mo Li tossed the dress back into her mother’s closet, took off her trench coat, straightened the collar of her shirt, and went straight downstairs.
Mother Mo shot her a couple of dissatisfied glances but didn’t dare say much. After their last argument, Mo Li had moved out of the Mo family residence.
“Who is this distinguished guest, anyway? Is business attire not formal enough?” Mo Li asked nonchalantly, leaning against the sofa.
Mother Mo hesitated, unable to speak.
Father Mo turned around first and spoke, his voice steady.
After that serious illness, he had become particularly mindful of his health. Though he didn’t work regularly and was surrounded by beauties, he wasn’t excessively indulgent. Thus, despite the faint white strands at his temples, his complexion remained ruddy, and his eyes were sharp and bright.
“Withdrawing your investment from the Luo Corporation ahead of time this time helped the Mo family avoid significant losses. That deserves praise.”
Meeting Mo Li’s unexpectedly stunned gaze, he seemed to feel slighted. With a cold expression, he continued, “The board isn’t as rigid and slow-witted as you think. The moment the young head of the Luo family was imprisoned, everyone knew. By tomorrow morning, the stock market fluctuations will be unstoppable.”
Mo Li’s father relaxed slightly. “You’re not young anymore, it’s time to settle down. Since you’ve proven yourself reliable in handling Mo Corporation’s affairs, I feel confident in handing over the group entirely to you.”
Mo Li was completely unprepared. It took her a moment to process his words, her heart racing uncontrollably.
Her expression shifted slightly as she straightened up.
“You mean… an arranged marriage?”
Her father glanced at his watch, clearly impatient with her slowness. “Exactly. That Omega comes from an excellent family background and is exceptionally good-looking, more than a match for you. Don’t be ungrateful later and embarrass the Mo family.”
“Excellent family background?” Mo Li couldn’t believe her ears and blurted out, “When did the Mo family stoop so low as to sell out their daughter for gain?”
Her father lowered his voice angrily, “What else? Let you keep fooling around with Mo Wang?”
Mo Li choked back a retort. Unbidden, memories of Mo Wang’s caresses and kisses drifted through her mind, calling it “fooling around” was putting it mildly.
Fortunately, her father seemed completely unaware, though his tone was sharp as he warned her, “That woman is nothing but a stray dog I kicked out of the house. She’s definitely trying to use you to get back into the Mo family’s good graces. I’ve seen plenty like her.”
“You’re about to start a family yourself, it’s time to act responsibly. Don’t let yourself be led around like a fool, only to have the rewards I’ve given you swindled away.”
Stung by his words, Mo Li shot back, “You’ve seen plenty like her? In the years you’ve neglected the company, how many Omegas haven’t clung to your coattails for a leg up? And haven’t you indulged them, handing out rewards?”
Her mind flashed to the fake medical report Mo Wang had forged to keep her father’s… urges in check.
She sneered, “How’s your health these days?”
“You!” After his last serious illness, her father’s heart had been left with complications. Now, gasping with rage, he still managed to raise a hand to strike her.
Just as Mo Li prepared to block the blow, a light, cheerful voice suddenly cut through the tension.
“Chairman Mo, calm down. If you hurt my fiancée, I’ll be very upset.”
The voice came from the main hall entrance. All three people in the room looked up.
Lin Qianying stood at the doorway, dressed in a white gown that accentuated her slender, willow-like figure, elegant and delicate.
A smile played on her lips as her gaze fixed intently on Mo Li, her eyes gleaming with an odd light. Boldly, she strode into the room and remarked, “It seems my timing is unfortunate.”
Despite her words, she calmly settled onto the sofa and picked up a cup of hot tea.
“Blame my eagerness. None of the previous marriage proposals suited me, so when I was introduced to someone trustworthy, I couldn’t resist coming early to take a look.”
Mo Li’s mother tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and moved to sit beside Lin Qianying with an ingratiating smile. “Not at all unfortunate! These two just love to bicker, they’re actually very close.”
She reached out to take Lin Qianying’s hand, trying to adopt a matronly tone. “You’re such a beautiful, well-mannered young woman, and we know your background well. We couldn’t be happier.”
But Lin Qianying coldly stood up, teacup in hand, leaving Mo Li’s mother’s hand hanging awkwardly in the air.
She gave a soft smile. “My mother and brother will be here later. I’m sure you and my mother will get along splendidly.”
Having said that, Lin Qianying moved closer to Mo Li, intimately linking arms with her. The calculating glint in her eyes sent a chill down Mo Li’s spine.
“Ah, yes, you two young people should chat more,” Mo’s mother said, trying to smooth things over, then shot a meaningful look at Mo Li.
Mo’s father cleared his throat, regaining his composure from his earlier anger.
“That’s right, Mo Li, why don’t you show Qianying around? We’ll entertain Mrs. Lin. You can come back downstairs when it’s time for dinner.”
With Lin Qianying clinging to her arm and the artificial scent of gardenia pheromones wafting from her, Mo Li felt extremely uncomfortable.
Under the disapproving gazes of her parents, she withdrew her arm from Lin Qianying’s grasp and led the way upstairs. Lin Qianying didn’t press further, instead pursing her lips into a smile and following along.
Mo Li took her to a guest room that had long been unoccupied, sat down in a chair without ceremony, and got straight to the point.
“Later, insist that we’re not a good match. Otherwise, I’ll expose the fact that you’re a Beta.”
“Besides, aren’t you in love with Bai Wu?”
