Rich Cat A Would Never Fall in Love with a Fake Heiress - Chapter 28
Mo Li hadn’t slept so soundly in a long time. When she opened her eyes again, her body felt light and her mind clear.
An unfamiliar ceiling greeted her. She sat up and noticed her phone placed beside the bed. When she turned it on, countless messages and missed calls popped up one after another. To her surprise, it was already afternoon, she had slept for over twenty hours straight.
Ignoring the notifications, Mo Li drew back the blackout curtains. Blinding sunlight immediately flooded the room, accompanied by several prying gazes from below.
She closed the curtains again and pushed open the bedroom door.
Mo Wang was sitting on the sofa, watching the news channel.
Noticing Mo Li, she looked up and greeted her naturally, “You’re awake? Your place isn’t private enough, so I brought you to my temporary residence.”
Mo Li responded briefly and sat down beside Mo Wang. “What about the people downstairs? Aren’t you going to do something about them?”
Mo Wang, clearly annoyed, frowned. “I went to the police station this morning. They probably followed me back. If I go out and confront them now, I’d be playing right into their hands.”
Just then, the voice of the news anchor caught both of their attention.
“Yesterday, a multiple-person fall incident occurred. Fortunately, due to timely rescue, only one person was injured. According to our investigation, the head of Qiangwei Pharmaceutical and the CEO of the Mo Group were present at the scene but refused to cooperate with the police investigation. It has been confirmed that the two were once foster sisters, and it is preliminarily suspected that the incident was related to internal disputes within the Mo Group.”
Pure distortion of the truth. Mo Li glanced at the logo in the upper right corner, sure enough, it was an exclusive news broadcast controlled by the Luo family.
“They’re starting their PR campaign already. Old Man Luo isn’t completely senile after all,” Mo Wang remarked coldly. “But let’s see how he plans to shield this murderer.”
She then reassured Mo Li, “Don’t worry. The truth hasn’t come out yet. Other news outlets are reporting more fairly and have greater influence. For now, the Luo family just has more control over the narrative.”
“Because Luo Liming came forward and testified about Luo Licheng shooting him, Luo Licheng is definitely going to spend some time in prison. This also bought us time for a more detailed investigation.”
Mo Li listened quietly, then asked the question that had been weighing on her mind.
“This kidnapping was planned by you and Luo Liming, wasn’t it?”
She carefully observed every subtle change in Mo Wang’s expression, trying to find any hint of denial, but she failed.
Mo Li’s heart sank.
“You had Luo Liming deliberately provoke Luo Licheng, making him feel threatened, as if his position as the eldest son of the Luo family was about to be taken away.”
“At that point, when you advised me to withdraw my investment from the Luo family, it was like adding the final straw that broke the camel’s back. Luo Licheng completely broke down, and in his emotional turmoil, he confessed everything, losing everything he had in the Luo family.”
Mo Wang sat motionless, calm and composed, as if prepared to admit everything.
A small crack seemed to form in Mo Li’s heart, as if someone had drilled a hole and poured mercury into it, ready to peel her heart apart layer by layer.
With disappointment in her voice, she said, “Mo Wang, you’re truly cunning. With just your silver tongue, you managed to change the ownership of the Luo family. Even the recording pen used as evidence belonged to Luo Licheng himself.”
“What about me? Did you ever consider that I might get hurt?”
Mo Li had learned early on, back in the slums, that tears were the cheapest and most useless things, symbols of weakness and failure. Yet, at this moment, she couldn’t help but feel like crying.
“Did you ever think about what I would face now that I’ve returned to the Mo family? The news is vague, but we were both photographed yesterday. A single news report about the Luo family, do you know how much it would devalue the Mo family’s stocks?”
Mo Li thought of the long list of missed calls on her phone, some even from her father, who was traveling abroad. All those calls were about the Mo family, about ongoing projects, no one was concerned about her.
Not even Mo Wang, who was sitting right in front of her.
“What were you thinking this entire month when you were getting close to me?”
Mo Li didn’t want to cry. She tilted her head back, trying to control her emotions, and began to question in a low voice, though her tone gradually rose.
“Was it, ‘This Alpha is so easy to fool’?”
“Or, ‘Is this ugly freak even worth it’?”
Or perhaps.
“Once this is over, just dump her. Staying with such a brainless insect would only taint my mind.”
For the first time, a hint of regret and sorrow appeared on Mo Wang’s face. She reached out, wanting to stroke Mo Li’s head.
A sharp “smack” echoed as Mo Li forcefully slapped her hand away.
“Now, what are you thinking? ‘Just let her die under Luo Licheng’s gunfire!’ Is that it?”
The back of Mo Wang’s hand turned red. Mo Li caught a glimpse of it, and a wave of regret, like uncontrollable green sprouts, sprouted in her heart.
She thought mockingly to herself.
I really am pathetic.
“What I’m thinking now is how to explain things to you and calm you down.” Mo Wang remained calm and rational. Despite the pheromones Mo Li was releasing in her anger, Mo Wang fearlessly grabbed Mo Li’s hand and firmly placed it on her own chest.
With each breath, her heart beat steadily and resolutely.
Mo Li calmed down a bit and fell silent.
Mo Wang spoke, “Actually, much of what you said is correct, but you miscalculated one thing, Luo Liming never intended to take control of the Luo family. He was merely someone Mrs. Li had supported and had no actual ties to the Luo family, let alone any inheritance rights. I was the one who tampered with the paternity test, deceiving both Old Master Luo and Luo Licheng.
“He wants to destroy the Luo family and take revenge on everyone who wronged Mrs. Li.” Seeing that Mo Li had calmed down, Mo Wang gently pulled her hand to her side and patiently explained, “The Luo family is bound to fall, and Old Master Luo will face punishment. Luo Liming might even become the second Luo Licheng, but that’s beyond my control.
“Luo Liming was too impatient and pushed too hard. If you hadn’t divested your shares earlier, by today, you would have suffered losses along with one-third of the Mo family’s assets. But if you had severed ties with the Luo family sooner, at most, you would have faced some targeted threats from Luo Licheng.
“That would have been far less pressure than what you’d endure if the Mo family suffered losses.”
Mo Wang forced a faint smile. “That’s what I thought at the time.”
“But I never imagined he would dare to kidnap both of you. Back then, the Luo family’s influence was overwhelming. After the chef died, the case regarding Luo Licheng’s mother went cold. All the senior members of the Luo family from that time have passed away, and I had no idea he was a desperate man willing to risk everything.”
This was the first time she admitted her mistake. Until now, Mo Li had always seen Mo Wang as someone who unexpectedly knew everything, like a keen hound that could sniff out prey and sense the shifting winds.
“As for those people who harassed and bothered you, they will disappear by tonight. To minimize the impact on the Mo family, I went to the police station this morning to give a statement and briefed the reporters. Relevant reports will be released tonight. The Mo family’s shares won’t continue to fall; instead, they will rebound as a substitute for the Luo family’s downfall.”
Mo Wang’s sincere gaze made it hard to doubt her. “I’ve never treated you as a joke. Whether it was kissing or making love, I cherished every moment from the bottom of my heart, and my feelings for you are genuine. Isn’t that enough? With countless interests and conflicts tied to our backs, emotions are bound to be mixed with some self-interest. Can’t we just continue like this?”
Mo Li looked at the woman before her.
Beautiful, pitiful, yet undeniably a cunning fox. Her lower lashes seemed perpetually tearful, evoking tenderness and an urge to believe her.
Her words were half-truths, her feelings half-sincere, precisely what made it hardest to resist, tempting gamblers to stake everything.
Mo Li didn’t blink, her voice soft. “Then what are we now?”
Mo Wang’s affectionate gaze suddenly faltered. She pressed her lips together a few times but remained silent.
Who would have thought that even a silver tongue could falter when it came to lying? Was it reluctance, or was she simply unwilling to offer even a deceitful promise?
Mo Li’s nose tingled with emotion as she struggled to keep her voice steady. “Before I was kidnapped, I called you. Where were you when your phone was off?”
Mo Wang lowered her eyes and said nothing.
“You had a chance to fix it, didn’t you? All you had to do was answer the phone and tell me not to go.” Mo Li resolutely withdrew her arm from Mo Wang’s grasp.
“But to let Luo Licheng gather enough chips to set this game in motion, you allowed everything to happen.”
This liar.
Mo Li stood up and walked toward the door.
Mo Wang did not stop her, sitting on the sofa with his head bowed like a defendant with no defense in court.
Mo Li pressed down the door handle, her final words like the coldest wind, invisibly sweeping through the empty room.
“Let it be.”
