Rich Cat A Would Never Fall in Love with a Fake Heiress - Chapter 27
No one paid him any attention.
Mo Li grabbed Mo Wang’s hand and pulled her toward the door, pushing against it several times with force, but the door remained unmoving.
Luo Licheng lay on the floor, letting out a low chuckle. He stretched out his other hand, trying to reach the gun on the ground.
Mo Li kicked it away. The gun spun across the glass-strewn floor and fell from the shattered balcony into the abyss thousands of meters below.
Luo Licheng didn’t seem to mind. He pulled out a black adhesive patch from his chest and slapped it onto the ground. The timer on the black strip immediately began to flash, and he grinned.
“Biological toxin. Only ineffective against betas. Modified based on Miss Mo Wang’s ideas.”
Mo Li’s heart sank. The timer showed only 1 minute and 37 seconds, and with every precious breath they took, the numbers continued to drop.
He rolled over, laughing hysterically at the ceiling.
“You thought I’d be careless? Dead men tell no tales. As long as all of you are dead, the truth will be whatever I say it is.”
He turned his head and crooked a finger. “As for you, Miss Mo Wang, you’re not foolish enough to continue opposing me without any evidence, especially after losing so many allies, are you?”
He still thought Mo Wang was a Beta.
Mo Wang released Mo Li’s hand and started walking toward Luo Licheng. Mo Li’s heart tightened, and she quickly grabbed Mo Wang’s forearm, pulling her back.
When the biological toxin was released, that spot would be the first to be affected.
Mo Wang turned and gave her a reassuring smile. This time, she didn’t let go of Mo Li’s hand. Instead, she led her to crouch beside Luo Licheng.
Under his confident gaze, she forcefully twisted his fractured arm. Amid his continuous howls of pain, she stripped off his jacket. After rummaging through the inner pockets, she smiled faintly.
She held up a black recording pen dangling from her fingertips. “Who said I have no evidence? You prepared this specifically to frame me, didn’t you?”
After all the struggle, Luo Licheng had little strength left. He reached out but grasped only air.
He collapsed onto the floor, losing consciousness unwillingly.
Mo Li would have been a fool not to realize the setup by now. With only thirty seconds left on the toxin bomb’s timer, she stared intently at Mo Wang.
“You were prepared all along, weren’t you?”
Mo Wang avoided her gaze, lowering her head as she pulled Mo Li toward the balcony. “Yes.”
The wind howled across the balcony. Below them stretched a drop of thousands of meters, where even birds circled and cried beneath their feet. Mo Li, disheveled and battered, felt strands of her hair drift into Mo Wang’s palm in the wind.
Mo Wang reached up and tucked a stray lock behind Mo Li’s ear, her fingers lingering on her cheek.
She rose on her toes and leaned in, her eyes conveying reassurance and calm.
“Close your eyes. Trust me.”
Mo Li obediently shut her eyes. In the darkness, she felt a gentle, fleeting kiss, like a drop of water. At the same time, the hand on her cheek moved to her shoulder and gave a slight push to the side.
They lost their balance and plummeted downward.
Startled birds scattered with sharp cries.
Mo Li opened her eyes. Snow-white feathers brushed past her face, and Mo Wang’s light chestnut hair and the sky below filled her vision. The sensation of weightlessness shot from her stomach to the top of her head, and cold air rushed into her nostrils.
Instinctively, she tightened her embrace around Mo Wang, pressing her head against her chest. She adjusted their position so her back faced downward and closed her eyes once more.
If she fell apart like this, would her broken bones stab Mo Wang?
That was the only thought she had time for.
A heavy, muffled thud echoed, followed by continuous gasps of shock.
Mo Li felt her entire back go numb. She opened her eyes and realized Mo Wang had carefully extricated himself from her embrace. She was lying on a massive safety net, one end connected to a thick water pipe outside the building, the other suspended high by a crane.
As the numbness faded, a fine, searing pain spread across her body, but at least she could still move.
Rubbing her lower back, she struggled to sit up when Mo Wang suddenly reached out, sliding his arms under her knees and pulling her to the side.
They tumbled together again, with Mo Li landing on top of Mo Wang. The sudden warmth and softness of their bodies pressed against each other made her instinctively prop herself up, their eyes meeting.
Just then, several heavy thuds sounded nearby. The safety net shook violently, and the steel cables of the crane groaned under the strain.
Mo Li steadied herself and turned her gaze toward the source of the chaos.
Luo Liming and Zhu Wen, along with Luo Licheng’s two unconscious bodyguards, had landed heavily right where Mo Li had been moments before. As soon as they landed, a loud explosion echoed from the upper floors, and a sinister purple cloud billowed into the sky, clearly, the poison had detonated.
Luo Liming’s wounds had clearly reopened, blood seeping out everywhere. He let out a long groan but stubbornly stretched his hand toward Mo Wang.
“Give me the recording. I want to charge that bastard upstairs with a death sentence, to be carried out immediately.”
Mo Wang gently pushed aside Mo Li’s half-protective arm and unhesitatingly retrieved the hidden voice recorder from his chest, handing it to Luo Liming.
“Don’t lose it.”
“How could I?”
Luo Liming gave a bitter smile, unbuttoned his shirt collar, and, in full view of everyone, peeled back the skin on his chest. Beneath it was not bone or flesh, but a deep recess.
He pressed the recorder into the cavity, fitting it perfectly before sealing it with the synthetic skin. He tapped it firmly twice and muttered to himself, “This thing is more important than my life.”
Soon, Qiangwei Pharmaceutical’s ambulance and police cars sped to the scene, their red and blue lights flashing amidst the blaring sirens. Mo Wang’s four subordinates, who had earlier jumped from the building, had already begun evacuating the crowd, but people continued to gather, their phone flashes flickering as the sounds of photos being taken and murmurs of discussion filled the air.
The flashing lights and noise gave Mo Wang a splitting headache, perhaps a side effect of Luo Licheng’s drug.
Only the firm, warm arm supporting her felt real.
Mo Li frowned, rubbing her temples repeatedly. Hazily, she heard Mo Wang speaking resolutely with the police officers who had just stepped out of their cars. Soon after, she was helped into the ambulance. In truth, her injuries weren’t severe.
But as she rested her head on a warm lap and felt Mo Wang’s cool fingers gently shielding her eyes from the ambulance’s harsh fluorescent lights, she didn’t feel like explaining anything. Instead, she closed her eyes comfortably and relaxed.
“Don’t we need to give statements?” Mo Li asked casually.
“They’ll contact us when they need to. For now, just rest,” Mo Wang replied, her voice soft and steady.
Mo Li obediently relaxed her body, curling up as she sank into a deep, dreamless sleep.
