Chapter 7: The Oath
Xu Ruozhou had fainted. When she opened her eyes again, she was greeted by an unfamiliar ceiling. She moved her body and found that her left hand was secured by a wooden splint.
A silver needle was inserted into the vein of her left hand. A bag of medication hung on a clothes rack to her left, which was propped against the wardrobe and secured from top to bottom with hundreds of pieces of tape.
A black-haired Beta maid walked in, holding a bowl of freshly cooked porridge. Xu Ruozhou had never seen her before. She frowned slightly and opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
The Beta maid read her lips and replied, “Miss Xu, you are at the Wen family’s residence. You suffered from hypothermia and fainted last night. My Master carried you back.”
Xu Ruozhou paused slightly. The last person she saw before fainting last night was indeed Wen Yan.
At the time, Wen Yan seemed to be talking to Xu Mingxin, but her ears were filled with the sound of rain, so she couldn’t hear what they were saying, only that the topic concerned her.
Xu Ruozhou recalled the events of last night. After Xu Mingxin’s birthday banquet, she returned to her bedroom. Before she could change out of her evening gown, curiosity prompted her to open the small box Wen Yan had given her.
Xu Mingxin happened to push open the door at that moment, seeing the blue diamond necklace in the box almost simultaneously with her. Xu Mingxin then called her parents and falsely accused her of theft.
The black-haired maid blew on the porridge to cool it down and offered it to Xu Ruozhou’s mouth, but she coldly avoided it. Lin Xi lowered her eyelashes and dutifully set down the bowl and chopsticks.
“Miss Xu, if you have any other needs, you can call me at any time.”
Downstairs, Wen Yan practically jumped up in a reflexive action when she saw Lin Xi exit the room. She asked in a low voice, “How is she?”
Lin Xi shook her head. “Master, Miss Xu refuses to eat anything we offer, whether she is asleep or awake.”
Wen Yan slumped back onto the sofa. “Go ahead. I understand.”
“Master, aren’t you going up personally? You saved Miss Xu; she must be very eager to thank you in person.”
“Ah, you don’t understand,” Wen Yan sighed. “Go supervise the workers renovating the villa outside.”
“Yes, Master.”
After much preparation, Wen Yan softly pushed open the door to Xu Ruozhou’s room.
The Omega lying in bed looked over with reddish-brown eyes. Wen Yan moved to the bedside, raised a hand to rub the back of her head under Xu Ruozhou’s cold gaze, and offered a friendly smile, “Hi, what a coincidence, we meet again.”
Xu Ruozhou glanced at her coldly. Wen Yan was unaffected and continued on her own, “You fainting last night really scared me. Your breathing was incredibly weak at the time, thankfully we got you to the hospital in time.”
Xu Ruozhou’s gaze was bone-chilling. Wen Yan shivered under her stare and subconsciously pulled her clothes tighter.
Wen Yan understood why Xu Ruozhou was cold toward her. She delivered the blue diamond, and the fake daughter discovered it immediately after. There was no such coincidence in the world.
Wen Yan now suspected that she and Xu Mingxin were incompatible elements. Otherwise, why would she always manage to offend the female lead so thoroughly whenever she encountered Xu Mingxin?
Under Xu Ruozhou’s icy scrutiny, Wen Yan sighed and said frankly, “Xu Ruozhou, whether you believe it or not, the blue diamond incident was truly a misunderstanding. Although I have a record of bad behavior, I truly did not collude with Xu Mingxin this time!”
“Ha.”
A cold laugh escaped her lips, which curved into a mocking arc.
Xu Ruozhou pulled out the needle and walked toward Wen Yan. Her aura was too strong. Even though she was sick and pale, she made Wen Yan afraid to look directly into her soul-piercing reddish-brown eyes.
Wen Yan stared at the floor. The calf, now bruised purple from kneeling, drew closer and closer, so close that Wen Yan could see the Omega’s pale, round toes firmly stepping on her instep.
Xu Ruozhou’s red lips parted, uttering the most cutting sarcasm, “Wen Yan, what are you still pretending for?”
Although she was being scolded, the gland at the back of her neck excitedly surged with a warm current, making her tremble and even more afraid to raise her head.
“You don’t think you can fool me a second time just because you tricked me once, do you?”
“Or, do you think I’ll be grateful to you after you pretended to save me when I fainted?”
Wen Yan stood helplessly. “This is a misunderstanding. I, I really didn’t do it.”
Xu Ruozhou gave her a cold glare. “Is there still a need to pretend now?”
Xu Ruozhou gave a self-mocking curve of her lips. Blood flowed from her blue vein as she pushed open the door indifferently, unwilling to stay with this liar for another second.
“Hey, Xu Ruozhou, where are you going?”
Xu Ruozhou walked down the stairs with a cold face. “None of your business.”
In the living room downstairs, the black-haired maid held a broom and respectfully lowered her head when she saw Xu Ruozhou descend. “Miss Xu.”
Xu Ruozhou ignored her, changed her shoes, and prepared to leave the Wen family’s house. As she stepped over the threshold, a pair of pale, cool hands grabbed her arm. She turned her head and saw Wen Yan.
The tall Alpha, with black long hair scattered somewhat messily over her shoulders, had her emotions completely displayed in her dark eyes, which now showed urgency.
Xu Ruozhou saw it clearly but couldn’t help but cast a disgusted look at her.
She hated liars the most, especially liars who forcibly marked her using despicable means like drugging.
Suddenly, the pheromone concentration in the air surged. The top-tier Douglas Fir pheromones coiled around Wen Yan, seeming to express the owner’s dissatisfaction.
“Wen Yan, what are you doing?!”
Xu Ruozhou hadn’t expected her to suddenly release pheromones. She was caught completely off guard. Her legs went weak, physiological tears welled up in the corners of her eyes, and she nearly collapsed onto the floor.
She had been marked by Wen Yan. Even with the Omega-specific inhibitor shot and pheromone blocker patch, she was unable to control the weakness that spread through her body under the Alpha’s dominant pheromones.
The residual scent gland at the back of her neck began to secrete a rose-scented liquid, submitting to the top-tier Alpha pheromones that had once completely occupied her, craving to be marked again to perpetuate the next generation’s life.
Xu Ruozhou clenched her teeth, forcing herself to stand straight. “Wen Yan, don’t even think about forcibly marking me again! I would rather gouge out this disgusting scent gland that you injected your pheromones into than submit to you again!”
“I will swear on my pheromones right now, so you know whether I’m telling the truth or not!”
“What are you saying?” A crack of astonishment appeared in Xu Ruozhou’s still-angry eyes.
Wen Yan remembered the novel’s setting: an Alpha could swear on their pheromones. If they lied, their pheromones would destroy their scent gland, rendering them useless and unable to mark an Omega ever again.
“Wen Yan, are you crazy!” Xu Ruozhou bit her lower lip. “Do you know what you’re doing?”
Wen Yan swallowed with difficulty.
Of course, she knew.
But compared to a dispensable scent gland, she was more concerned with preserving her legs and completely severing any connection with that sinister fake daughter.
The top-tier Douglas Fir pheromones heard their owner’s summons. Instead of provocatively enticing the rose pheromones beneath the blocker patch, they dangerously coiled around Wen Yan’s own scent gland.
It was as if the pheromones were ready to self-destruct the confining gland the moment she spoke, to gain true freedom.
“Xu Ruozhou, you can ask me anything now.”
Xu Ruozhou’s hands, hanging by her sides, clenched unnaturally. Why was Wen Yan going to such an extreme?
She was willing to risk becoming a disabled person just to prove to her that she was not involved in the blue diamond incident?
If Wen Yan lied and could no longer mark an Omega, suffering a breakdown, how would she, as the first witness, explain it to the police?
A trace of hesitation flashed in Xu Ruozhou’s eyes. At that moment, the black-haired maid, who had been standing silently nearby, suddenly spoke.
“Miss Xu, except for the bedrooms, every corner of the Wen family house is installed with cameras with no blind spots.”
After a long silence, the Omega looked up with reddish-brown eyes, as if having made a firm decision, and said heavily to the Alpha who was exuding pheromones, “Fine.”
“Wen Yan, did you collude with Xu Mingxin to frame me for stealing and ruin my reputation by giving me the blue diamond?”
The Douglas Fir pheromones in the scent gland stirred restlessly, ready to destroy the gland that confined its freedom at any moment.
“I did not!”
Wen Yan’s voice was loud. These three words were almost shouted.
The Alpha pheromones lingering in the air gradually dissipated. The Douglas Fir pheromones retreated into the owner’s scent gland, looking deflated.
Xu Ruozhou was slightly stunned.
Wen Yan was telling the truth.
The ritual was over. Wen Yan lowered her raised hand, secretly sighing in relief.
Fortunately, Xu Ruozhou only asked about the blue diamond. Otherwise, her life might truly have been forfeit.
Xu Ruozhou examined her with a complicated look. After a long moment, her small, beautiful red lips pursed. “Why?”
“Huh?” Wen Yan was momentarily stunned.
Xu Ruozhou stared at her gentle expression, her brows tightly furrowed.
The Wen family Alpha in her memory wasn’t like this. The Alpha who always chased after Xu Mingxin was sullen, like a fungus growing in a dark, damp environment. But the person standing in front of her now—
The Alpha was wearing a warm white sweater. Her oval face was delicate and beautiful, not unlike a doll, and those bright, black eyes looked like those of a silly dog that would recognize its owner after being given a bone.
Xu Ruozhou found it hard to believe that such a person would conspire with Xu Mingxin to drug her.
Xu Ruozhou pursed her lips and completed her thought. “Why did you drug me?”
Wen Yan held fast to her established persona, answering almost without hesitation, “Because the person I’ve always liked is you!”
The scent gland at the back of Wen Yan’s neck twitched fiercely, seemingly displeased with her lie.
“Drugging you was my mistake.”
“I only pursued Xu Mingxin to get your attention,” Wen Yan said without batting an eye. “But you never once looked at me, so I resorted to that desperate measure.”
Xu Ruozhou frowned. Wen Yan squeezed her eyes, and a few tears actually streamed down her face.
The Alpha’s cheeks were stained with tears. Vulnerable emotion flowed perfectly from her eyes. “Xu Ruozhou, I’m in love with you, but you never looked at me once.”
“When you reached marriageable age, I knew I wasn’t good enough for you, which is why I made that mistake.”
Wen Yan dropped to her knees with a thud at Xu Ruozhou’s feet, clutching her calf without any reservation, her tone humble to the extreme. “As long as you’re willing to stay by my side, I’ll do anything for you!”
The Douglas Fir pheromones in the scent gland crashed around in indignation. Wen Yan, under Xu Ruozhou’s increasingly complex gaze, subtly gave her own scent gland a hard pinch.
Stop messing around. If you interrupt your Master’s acting again, be careful, I’ll just dig you out myself.
