Chapter 8: Intentions
“…You should get up first.”
Xu Ruozhou said, pursing her lips.
Hearing this, those pitiful, dark eyes brightened, looking at her with anticipation, like a small dog proudly forgiven by its owner.
Xu Ruozhou’s tone involuntarily softened slightly. “I understand your intentions.”
Just as Wen Yan was about to breathe a sigh of relief, Xu Ruozhou changed the subject. “So, when did you start liking me?”
Hearing this question, Wen Yan stumbled, nearly falling back onto her knees. Xu Ruozhou squinted suspiciously.
Wen Yan was so used to being a layabout that she never expected her brain to spin so fast just to keep up her lie.
She recalled the most impactful scene from the original book.
In a perpetually cold yard, starving orphans wrestled for a piece of moldy cake. The winner among them was not the oldest, nor the strongest, but the hungriest orphan.
She was frail, yet her fierce, reddish-brown eyes were daunting.
Mother Xu looked at those vicious eyes, covered her mouth, and screamed. The pampered woman couldn’t believe this was her biological daughter—this wolf cub who had used a stick to brutally lash others’ faces for a moldy cake was her child!
The director accepted a large sum of money, and Xu Ruozhou was brought back to the Xu family.
The tall, slender girl sensed her biological mother’s revulsion and cautiously followed behind her.
It wasn’t until she entered the villa and saw the figure of a girl her age, wearing a beautiful sundress, chasing and playing with an Alpha in the garden, that Xu Ruozhou understood why Mother Xu hated her.
Someone had stolen the life that belonged to her.
“The first day you came home.” Wen Yan swallowed. “I was in the garden that day and saw you standing at the gate from far away. You were wearing ill-fitting clothes, your pants had patches, and you stood there, completely out of place.”
Xu Ruozhou froze, apparently not expecting this answer.
Wen Yan recalled her original motivation for finishing the novel. “Most Omegas have weak personalities, but that day, you lowered your eyelashes, seemingly obedient and docile, yet every cell in your body screamed with the most primal wildness. That was a strength I had never seen before.”
“I have no ambition and know nothing about business, but that doesn’t stop me from admiring ambitious people who will stop at nothing to climb up. I don’t care if they use me as a stepping stone.”
“They say that flowers grown in barren soil aren’t refined, but I want to see which is nobler: the flower meticulously cultivated by a gardener in a greenhouse, or the lone plant that fought its way out of the barren soil, drawing all the nutrients it could, and is more resistant to wind and rain.”
Xu Ruozhou stared into her eyes, trying to find any evidence of a lie.
None.
Even her naturally keen S-level Omega intuition told her that what Wen Yan said was very likely the truth.
After a long silence, a self-mocking chuckle broke the stillness of the room, jarring in the quiet air.
Wen Yan watched Xu Ruozhou, who was laughing while tears seeped from the corners of her eyes, and her expression grew heavy. The Douglas Fir pheromones in her gland became subdued in sympathy.
After a while, the self-mocking laughter turned into quiet sobs.
Xu Ruozhou never imagined that the person who understood her the most would be the useless Wen family Alpha who spent all her days chasing Xu Mingxin.
Wen Yan didn’t comfort her, simply standing there, silently listening as the strong Omega vented her long-suppressed emotions.
Before long, Xu Ruozhou stood up. Her pale face had reverted to its usual coldness. Wen Yan looked at her and subconsciously raised her hand, wanting to wipe away the tear stains on her cheeks.
It was an intimate gesture. Wen Yan only realized this after reaching out. When her fingers touched that icy, jade-like skin, she awkwardly flinched, but the Omega’s slender, pale hand quickly grabbed her wrist.
Wen Yan looked up. Those reddish-brown eyes were like a raging wildfire. Xu Ruozhou held her hand, using it to wipe away the tear stains on her face, piece by piece. Her movements were dominant, devoid of any emotional desire.
“Wen Yan, as long as you are willing to help me seek revenge on the Xu family, I will agree to be your Omega.”
Wen Yan was willing to drug her to possess her. Xu Ruozhou was confident she would accept this extremely tempting proposal.
“I won’t.”
Xu Ruozhou raised her eyes in disbelief, only to see Wen Yan shake her head firmly. “Xu Ruozhou, I cannot agree to that.”
“Why?” Xu Ruozhou asked. “Don’t you like me and want to possess me?”
Wen Yan couldn’t tell Xu Ruozhou that even without her help, she would still reclaim her life, send her biological parents—who gave birth but didn’t raise her, and raised but didn’t educate her—to a mental institution, and become the respected, powerful CEO Xu.
“Xu Ruozhou, listen to me.” Wen Yan grasped her shoulders. “I can help you take revenge on the Xu family, but I don’t need you to repay me in that way.”
“You are beautiful, capable, and ambitious. You are only temporarily trapped in a cage called ‘home,’ where they control your fate, but one day, you will be the one who controls the fate of others.”
Xu Ruozhou stared blankly at her. The Alpha’s expression was unusually sincere. Although the words seemed far-fetched, she spoke as if they had already come true.
Her reddish-brown eyes looked at Wen Yan in confusion. “Then how do you want me to repay you?”
Wen Yan smiled at her, revealing two adorable canine teeth. “Just staying by your side is enough for me.”
As long as you don’t break my legs on the day you succeed, I’ll be satisfied.
Xu Ruozhou gave her a look with veiled meaning.
With the legal marriage registration still some time away, Wen Yan instructed the workers at the villa to work day and night to expedite the construction, hoping to get Xu Ruozhou out of the Xu family as soon as possible.
Wen Yan remembered the renovation, and her eyes lit up. She excitedly grabbed the Omega beside her.
Xu Ruozhou looked at her in confusion.
“I’m going to redecorate the villa. How about you give me some suggestions?”
After speaking, the bright-eyed Alpha, like a wild horse unbridled, dragged the owner of the fair wrist straight out the door.
Xu Ruozhou was infected by her excitement, and even the painful memories seemed to fade slightly.
After the heavy rain, they were greeted by long-awaited clear weather.
Stepping outside, the warm sun shone on her face. Her dark lashes on her pale cheeks fluttered.
Walking from darkness into light, it took Xu Ruozhou a moment to painfully open her eyes.
Right outside the front door of the villa was a fountain, where clear water spurted from the circular holes.
The transparent water droplets sparkled vividly in the sunlight. Workers were moving greenery on both sides.
On the steps in front of the villa, the tall Alpha was talking to the designer.
Xu Ruozhou’s gaze was unconsciously drawn to the person standing in the sunlight.
She had seen Wen Yan many times, but each time, Wen Yan was trailing behind the Xu Mingxin she despised, so she had never noticed that Wen Yan’s features were so delicate.
Her skin, fair with a rosy undertone, was so fine that you couldn’t see pores even up close, which was very rare for an Alpha. If she weren’t so tall, Wen Yan might be mistaken for an Omega when out in public.
Sensing her gaze, the Alpha she was staring at turned around, revealing two canine teeth, smiling brightly and radiantly. Xu Ruozhou involuntarily took a step forward, one foot entering the sunlight.
Wen Yan patted the designer’s shoulder and pointed her long finger in Xu Ruozhou’s direction. The designer looked over. Xu Ruozhou nodded slightly as a greeting.
“Ms. Xu, we are planning to repaint the exterior walls of the villa. Currently, we are considering black and gold. Generally, gold gives a sense of home warmth, while black is more high-end. Which color do you prefer?”
Home?
Hearing the word, Xu Ruozhou’s eyelashes fluttered. An indescribable, complex emotion welled up in her heart.
“Xu Ruozhou?”
The Alpha’s beautiful fingers waved in front of her eyes. “Wake up, you’re spacing out!”
Xu Ruozhou regained her focus, looking at Wen Yan, who was smiling exceptionally bright against the sunlight.
“What color do you like?”
Xu Ruozhou’s gaze fell on the soft, creamy white sweater the Alpha was wearing.
After a moment of silence.
Xu Ruozhou pursed her lips. “White, I think. We can use gray for the roof and borders.”
The designer frowned slightly. Before they could speak, the Alpha who had invited her suddenly clapped her hands. “We think exactly alike! We’ll go with what you said!”
The Designer: ?
Didn’t this person just tell her that she definitely wanted a yellowish tone?
Wen Yan waved her hand grandly, looking rather wealthy and overbearing. “All materials must be the best. I don’t lack money.”
The Designer: ???
Then who was the person haggling over the price with her?
The designer looked at the cool, aloof Omega, then at the gesticulating Alpha who seemed to have forgotten her rabies shot.
After a moment, the designer suddenly understood. “I will complete the wedding house for the two of you on time!”
The Beta designer smiled, having bought into the “couple” narrative, and winked teasingly at Wen Yan. “I guarantee the two of you will start your happy sexual life as soon as possible~”
Wen Yan: !
Xu Ruozhou: …
“What nonsense are you saying? W-we’re not that kind of relationship!” Wen Yan’s face turned beet red, and she stuttered her denial, not forgetting to cautiously peek at the expression of the person next to her.
In contrast, Xu Ruozhou was much calmer. After politely thanking the designer, she also offered many new suggestions regarding the details of the bedroom decor.
The Omega stood in the sunlight. The golden light softened the rigid lines of her profile, like a melting glacier falling into a calm lake, finally creating some gentle ripples.
Wen Yan stood beside her, mesmerized, staring at those slightly parted red lips.
Even the professional jargon she usually despised didn’t seem so dull when spoken by those beautiful, thin lips.
Wen Yan listened with rapt attention until Xu Ruozhou walked over and tapped her head. Only then did she come back to reality and realize that the sky had already darkened.
The Omega stood in front of her, her back to the slowly rising moon. Xu Ruozhou stood with her hands in her pockets. The cool white moonlight cast an inviolable, pure glow on her detached profile. “You were spacing out for so long, what were you thinking about?”
“I was thinking about our life after we get married.”
The original host was tactless, forcing the beautiful and powerful female lead to stay home as a maid to cook and clean for her, and even abused the female lead during her heat periods for the sake of petty self-esteem.
A villain who opposes the female lead in this way, if powerful, can survive for a while, but without power, they are pure cannon fodder. Wen Yan rubbed her hands together.
If she were in charge, she would firmly hug the female lead’s thigh and lie in bed as a mooching Alpha living off her wife’s success.
Xu Ruozhou folded her arms across her chest. “You were just vehemently refusing me, and now you’re fantasizing about married life?”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself. We will sign a prenuptial agreement, and we will have three rules.”
