Reborn: The Female Monarch Is My Life’s Greatest Love - Chapter 8
Chapter 8: A Sudden Decision
Because of the previous brawl, Constant’s ribs had still not fully recovered. However, to ensure Nathanael didn’t detect the slightest clue, he removed all his bandages before returning this time, only asking Bai to help him apply a medicinal plaster over the incision site on his back.
Upon smelling the scent of herbs on Constant, Nathanael leaned into his ear and asked doubtfully, “What happened?” Constant’s daily activities shouldn’t have caused muscle strain, so why was he wearing a plaster now, and specifically on his back?
“I wasn’t paying attention when I got out of bed this morning,” Constant said. As he spoke, he slid his hand under Nathanael’s clothes at the waist, blocking the other’s lips with his own before Nathanael could react.
Nathanael was highly alert; if he sensed something was wrong, Constant didn’t have the confidence to evade Nathanael’s questioning.
As the moon hung high in the branches, Nathanael’s optical computer suddenly began to ring.
The noisy static of the transmission made the pleasure-immersed Nathanael feel extremely irritable. At the moment he clicked open the optical computer, he swore that if it wasn’t some world-ending emergency, he would definitely use his sidearm to blow the sender’s brains out.
—Bee Race surprise attack. Major General Nathanael is appointed as Chief Executive to deploy to the field.
Seeing the last word of the message, Nathanael let out a low groan. He hooked his arm around Constant’s neck and whispered in his ear, his breathing unsteady, trailing off into a lingering, suggestive tone as he recounted the situation.
Upon learning this information, Constant stopped his movements and imprinted a kiss on the other’s brow: “Be careful in everything, Nar.”
Due to the urgency of the event, Nathanael’s legs were still a bit weak when he left the house, so much so that when he reached the transport warship sent to fetch him, he flattened his seat the moment he sat down. Only then did he force himself to maintain focus and open the battle reports sent from the front.
Because of his low morale and the unavoidable scent of male pheromones on his body, the adjutant beside him barely dared to breathe. Their Imperial Major General, having been interrupted, now radiated an aura as if he wanted to slaughter every species he laid eyes on.
After Nathanael left, Constant’s optical computer also happened to ring.
—Bee Race surprise attack. At this stage, ten stealth soldiers are required to enter the enemy’s nest to scout the deployment of the enemy camp for our army. Those aware, please sign up of your own accord! Fight for the glory of the Empire!
Constant looked at the message on his optical computer and then walked into the bathroom.
Three minutes later, he looked at the message sent by the Recruitment Department and let out a cold laugh: as expected, some people were already impatient for his life.
He hadn’t sent any acknowledgment to the previous message, yet he had now directly received an approved application from the Military Center to enter the stealth queue.
—Private Ellex, the Empire is proud of you!
A towel currently covered his wet hair, but his eyes, which were originally as blue as the sky, were now filled with indifference.
The next morning, he completed all the procedures according to the process indicated in the message and then stepped onto the path to the Bee Star at the assembly point.
Unlike the area he resided in, when passing through the city of Desaintduns, even the sky had been dyed a blood-red color due to the Bee Race’s surprise attack.
This surprise attack came without any warning. After the Bee vanguard used warship lasers to blast open the defense net, overwhelming numbers of Bee warships flooded into their planet, launching a large-scale massacre and invasion before the Zerg army could react.
Zerg corpses were scattered across the streets; the sight of such total devastation falling into Constant’s eyes reminded him of the scene in his past life after Planet Bug was conquered by the Butterfly Star.
Perhaps because of the butterfly effect brought by this life, everything had changed. In his past life, the Bee Race had not chosen this moment to launch their offensive.
This time, he would make those Bees pay the price they deserved.
After packing his communication equipment and checking his defensive gear, Constant tucked the assigned firearm into the back of his waist.
His waist, tightened by a leather belt, looked even firmer beneath his uniform. The gun tucked into his lower back just barely covered half of his waist. This ascetic-looking attire fell into the eyes of several military females traveling with him, causing them to cast playful looks at Constant.
It was already night by the time they reached the front lines. Shrouded by the darkness, and after coordinating with the Zerg contact person, the group split into two teams and infiltrated the Bee Race’s current encampment.
Though he had only had two months of training, Constant had already learned how to use his advantage as a male bug to approach his target.
The four others in his group were all military females, but judging solely by their movement speed, Constant did not believe they were newly joined Zerg privates like himself, as the records claimed.
After looking at several thermal images displayed on the optical screen, Constant leaned behind a piece of cover and made eye contact with another infiltrator.
Although these people weren’t trustworthy, he also understood that in the face of a racial invasion, even if they had internal strife, resolving the external enemy would be the first priority.
Thus, after the eye contact, he received the message transmitted by the other party.
The plan had changed suddenly. Under the “guidance” of the commanding Major General, their original stealth mission was to be changed to acting as “bait” to draw the attention of the stationed Bee enemy troops, while other Zerg forces would use a feint to drive the Bee Race into a blast zone. The mission assigned to their group was also to use themselves as bait to trigger chaos in the Bee camp.
On the other side.
“I will not gamble with their lives!” Nathanael slammed his fist onto the table while looking at the wrinkled commander in front of him. He would never agree to the strategy of changing the stealth units into bait.
If such a plan were implemented, the soldiers going to lure the enemy would not have a chance of complete survival. Because the moment they disrupted the enemy, a massive number of Bee soldiers would swarm them. With only five people, they simply could not handle a Bee enemy force numbering in the hundreds or thousands.
“Major General Nathanael, with all due respect, you are still too young and simply don’t understand.” But before he could finish, the other grabbed the few remaining hairs on his head and slammed his skull into the glass table.
“I didn’t come here to listen to your preaching!” Nathanael was not a person who could learn patience, so he didn’t care what forces were behind the person standing in front of him. Everything that provoked him should disappear from his sight.
After pulling the bloodied commander out of the table with a flick of his hand, he tossed the man aside. He took a disinfectant wipe handed to him by his adjutant, wiped his blood-stained right hand clean, and turned to walk out. “Order all units to stand by. No one is allowed to act on their own before I give instructions. If anyone is found doing so, they will be hanged.”
“We just received word that the revised plan has been transmitted to the stealth units. Both groups are already in position and have finished setting all the explosives.” Before Nathanael, who had returned to the temporary command room, could even sit down, a piece of news that made him incredibly furious was brought to him by a communications officer.
The fist resting on the armrest tightened bit by bit. Nathanael was actually so angry at this news that he laughed: “That old thing.” His already irritable mood became even worse…
Sooner or later, he would kill that fool who used his family influence to act like an elder in front of him.
At the Bee Race encampment.
Constant looked at the virtual timer on his wrist, calculating the evacuation time. On the way here, he had already memorized all obstacles and planned an evacuation route. If the hidden forces that wanted him dead truly wanted to use this to get rid of him, then he could guarantee he would not grant their wish.
As time ticked away, only ten seconds remained of the two-minute countdown.
Constant also shifted from his hidden posture to a slight crouch. He watched the optical screen:
Ten, nine, eight, seven, six…
Just as his finger was ready to press the detonation button, a massive explosion suddenly came from the other direction.
The Zerg vanguard had already begun their first engagement with the Bee soldiers. Simultaneously, Constant pressed the detonation button on the screen. In an instant, soaring flames ignited around him, and the ear-splitting sound of the explosion even made him feel a bit dizzy.
Although it was strange why the Zerg hadn’t followed the plan to wait until they drew all the forces before attacking from the other side, with the sudden attack combined with the explosives set by the stealth team, the Bee Race was now trapped in a dilemma, being attacked from both the front and rear.
During the opening when the Bee Race was making formation adjustments, Constant used the gap to bypass the patrolling Bee soldiers and reached the front of the Bee central command camp. He squinted his eyes at the main camp, which currently had loosened defenses: if possible, he might be able to directly destroy the Bee Race’s temporary command post.
Taking advantage of the chaotic battle between the two armies, Constant moved behind several obstacles to the side of the temporary command tent. He curled his lips at the single remaining explosive in his hand, while his other hand drew the sidearm from his waist.
The ground combat training he had adapted to earlier meant that Constant didn’t have to rely on bone wings for gliding and defense like all female bugs; instead, he could use his inherent stealth superiority to weaken the enemy’s sensory defense systems, achieving the goal of catching them off guard.
The four team members who were originally with him were just as he had expected during the evacuation gap, they did not choose to take him along. However, this made Constant’s current plan more convenient if this succeeded, would he be a little closer to his Nar?
