Reborn: The Female Monarch Is My Life’s Greatest Love - Chapter 6
Chapter 6: Offering Loyalty
Though the fried egg in his mouth tasted truly wonderful, Nathanael still felt that everything before his eyes was like a dream as he ate it.
“Nar, has there been a lot of official business lately?” Noticing the fatigue in Nathanael’s eyes, Constant picked up a piece of bread and brought it to his lips. “You don’t seem to have much of an appetite.”
“…Yes.” While chewing the bread, Nathanael’s thoughts were pulled back by Constant’s voice, and he answered the question. “The Bee race has had some movement lately. Since they are relatively close, we need to be vigilant.”
The Bee race, one of the five major planets, was a neighbor to the Zerg. The distance between the two was indeed closer than to the other planets, while the Butterfly planet, Dragonfly planet, and the nearing-extinction Mosquito-Fly planet were relatively far away.
Because of Nathanael’s actions several years ago, the Bee Queen had died, and their planet lost its power to resist. It was thought that the encirclement and suppression campaigns over these years had rendered them unable to pose a threat, but recently there had been signs of a resurgence.
Because of assistance from the shadows, the Zerg were not prepared to alert the enemy; instead, they were waiting for an opportunity to infiltrate.
Such an event had also occurred in his past life. Helped by another race, the Bee race redeveloped and reached an agreement with them. Under the circumstances of being intercepted and besieged, Nathanael’s legion suffered countless casualties, and even he, the Major General, nearly lost his life in that sudden outbreak of war.
“Don’t forget to eat while training,” Constant’s voice carried a hint of comfort and reminder.
At this moment, Nathanael almost thought that the other already knew the truth from back then and had forgiven him.
But in reality, Constant did not know.
However, regarding Constant’s abnormality, Nathanael did not speak a word until the two separated. He did not want to know the truth of this matter, nor was there a need to.
After Constant returned to the training center, he saw Bai walking past him expressionlessly, carrying a large bag of specialties. By Bai’s side, the male bugs gathered on both sides of the road were sizing him up with extremely explicit gazes.
“Bai?” Constant reached Bai’s side in a few steps, preparing to take the bag from his other hand.
“Ah, Ellex.” Bai immediately relaxed his expression when he turned and found it was his roommate. “I thought you would arrive early.” As he spoke, he handed the bag in his hand to Constant. “This is what my father asked me to bring to you specialties brought back from the Butterfly planet.”
The moment the bag was handed to him, it dragged his upper body down, pulling him toward the ground. This embarrassing behavior drew loud ridicule from the surrounding female bugs.
“No wonder you’re so at ease with your roommate.” A female bug laughed loudly as he walked up to Constant and Bai. “It’s truly disgraceful to have such a thing among female bugs.”
Bai rolled his eyes at the female bug in front of him. Just as he reached out to help Ellex, who had just climbed up from the ground, lift the bag, his wrist was grabbed by the female bug who had come to provoke them.
In the next moment, Constant and Bai threw their fists almost simultaneously, launching an attack at the female bug before he could react.
Their tacit cooperation caught the female bug off guard. The sound of a nasal bridge breaking was exceptionally clear and pleasant to the ear at this moment.
After clutching his nose and retreating two steps, the female bug fell into the circle of his followers. A brief standoff began between the two sides, and the smell of gunpowder began to spread.
Constant knew that what he had just done was not a wise move, but he didn’t think this deliberately provocative female bug was the type to quit while he was ahead. During the mockery just now, the other had not only approached them but also released his pheromones, attempting to use them to suppress Bai, who was also a female.
“Do you know who I am!”
Once those words were out, Constant narrowed his eyes slightly. He was waiting for the other to say the name of some earth-shattering figure.
“My father is Captain Gunther Lester of the Imperial Legion.” When the female bug mentioned his father’s name, the female bugs surrounding him all wore expressions of pride.
But Constant let out a disappointed sigh, and Bai rolled his eyes in exasperation.
Constant: And here I thought it would be someone impressive.
Bai: He had never even heard his father mention this person’s surname.
Then they spoke a sentence in unison: “Never heard of it.”
Neither in his past life nor this one had Constant ever heard of such a surname.
“You!” Lester angrily shoved aside a follower who was trying to pull him back to dissuade him, and charged at the two of them with swung fists.
In terms of combat ability, Bai dared to say he would never lose to anyone except his father.
Dodging Lester’s fist, Bai drove a punch directly into the other’s chin. The force was so great that beads of blood seeped from his knuckles due to the impact, but he simply shook his hand as if he had long expected it.
While Bai attacked Lester head-on, Constant chose to circle to the side, preparing to lock the other’s lower half once he was unstable, thereby restricting his movements and creating a good environment for Bai to strike.
However, reality did not go as he had imagined. In the gap of retreating a step, Lester caught sight of the poised Constant out of the corner of his eye. As Constant charged toward him, Lester suddenly stepped back and instantly executed a grapple.
There was originally a vast difference between male and female bugs in terms of physique and strength, but Constant was able to use the conditioned reflexes his body had been forced to learn while escaping in his past life to quickly break free from Lester’s grappling technique and launch a counterattack.
Bai was just about to continue his strike when the other male bugs who had been surrounding Lester also began to launch their counterattacks.
At that moment, a highly authoritative voice interrupted the dozen or so people currently in a brawl. It was after this voice that everyone stopped their movements. No one dared to defy this voice, because this person would affect their entire legion career.
Jacob Garcia, a Captain of the 19th Imperial Legion, once led the military female bugs of the 19th Legion in aerial combat over the territory of the Mosquito-Fly planet. Because of that battle, his entire left leg was torn off by the Mosquito-Fly race.
To reward his bravery, the Empire specifically transferred him to the General Command of the Legion to serve as a tactical advisor, but despite this, he still chose to return to the training center, volunteering to serve as the tactical training instructor here.
“Now, line up and stand straight! All of you involved, come before me!”
The reason the Zerg race could stand at the top of the galaxy was their high degree of obedience. As long as they were military females, they gave this veteran who had sacrificed for the Empire his due privileges, regardless of social class or rank within the military.
Therefore, after Captain Garcia issued the order, everyone involved in the incident stood before him in a uniform line, not a single one missing.
Everyone understood what they would face next.
“Captain Garcia, it was them…” Before Lester could finish speaking, a whip lashed across his face.
“I don’t want to hear any excuses.” For Garcia, things like fists should only be directed at external enemies. “If you cannot learn to restrain yourselves, then get out of here. This place cultivates officers who are about to lead troops into battle. I advise fools like you, who can only act arrogantly in the legion by seeking family protection, to leave as soon as possible.”
“And you.” As a military female who had once been on the battlefield, Garcia froze slightly upon seeing Bai, then knit his brows. “And you, Bai Nate. You shouldn’t have come here.”
Nate. This surname, which could be called the glory of the Empire, caused all the military females to feel a jolt of shock upon hearing it.
No wonder this sub-female had been completely unmoved when Lester mentioned his surname earlier, even looking at Lester with disdain.
“Where I am should be decided by myself.” Toward Captain Garcia, Bai was undoubtedly very respectful, but while the other’s past deeds filled him with admiration, it didn’t mean he would agree with every word the man said.
From the moment he clearly realized how glorious his surname was, he had secretly vowed that he would never bury this glory in the torrent of history. His father was the first sub-female Admiral of the Empire, leading the Zerg to break through obstacle after obstacle, finally bringing back all the light energy resources plundered by the Butterfly planet with the assistance of another Major General.
Yet even such an invincible military female who was unmatched on the battlefield still could not escape the fate of marriage. But as compensation to this Imperial Admiral, Bai inherited his father’s surname and thus received more affection than his elder brother.
Because of this, his brother often bullied him by relying on his noble status as a male bug.
In the gap of the standoff between Garcia and Bai, Constant was still thinking about how he could nurse the rib that had just been broken back to health before this month’s leave. If Nathanael were to question him because of it, he feared all his subsequent plans would be disrupted.
“Private Ellex, step forward!” Perhaps unable to have a frontal conflict with Bai, or perhaps admiring Bai’s boldness, Garcia did not speak further to mock him. Instead, he turned and called out Constant’s other name.
“Yes, Captain!” Constant reacted quickly and stepped forward.
Due to the close distance, those dark pupils gazed at him with cold indifference. After a long while, the man finally spoke: “I think what that fool said was not wrong. The Zerg race should feel utterly ashamed to have such a weak and fragile female bug like you.”
Garcia’s words held no warmth at all.
“If you cannot learn to protect yourself, then do not even think about having the life to offer your loyalty to the Empire!”
